Ok so Stranger Things is back with it's fourth season that feels longer than the wait we had between this and the last one. I don't care, I love it and the entry is one of, if not my favourite season that we've ever had.
One of the last genuine mega hits that Netflix have yet to cancel, The execs have changed up their binge model and they've given us the first seven episodes with the latter two dropping on July 1st.
In it we have several storylines going on such as Eleven taking a trip down memory lane, Dustin and Co attempting to get to the bottom of a murder mystery, Joyce and Murray attempting to save Hopper and Hopper trying to survive the harsh prison that is Kamchatka. The first two threads in this connect together as do the last two and there's a lot that we learn about in this first volume that perfectly sets things up for Volume 2.

So one of the most terrifying aspects of the new season is Vecna, a humanoid creature from the upside down who traps his prey in a fantasy before he brutally murders them in eye popping fashion. In the build up to this the characters become lost in a fantasy and they start to see vivid hallucinations that appear similar to a nightmare that they can't escape from. I definitely got lots of Nightmare on Elm Street Vibes from this and we get not only a mention of Freddie Krueger but also a cameo by Robert Englund at one point.
Given the name by the Hellfireclub, he's assigned this because in Dungeon's and Dragons Vecna was a powerful wizard that became a lich aka an undead creature.
This actually turns out to be true as we discover his backstory through Eleven.
The season opens with her as a child apparently murdering all the other subjects in Brenner's experiment but as the season goes on we discover this isn't the truth. There's even a hint towards the eventual reveal in this moment as we can see a tear on the wall behind her which we learn is where she sent Vecna into the upside down. Early on Eleven really struggles to fit in at high school and after being publicly humiliated she ends up losing her cool and attacking her high school bully. This allows Dr. Owens to come to her as a friend and after he tricks her into working with Brenner once more, she eventually agrees to go into a machine he's crafted called Nina. - บันเทิง

The 3 year waiting was definitely worth it, the best and darkest season in my opinion. 001 actor was so unbelievably good.
He was ABSOLUTELY amazing.. he really nailed making himself look almost psycho with the way he looked at eleven
I'm proud of him. He's come a long way from Sweeney Todd and Twilight.
His acting was the reason I hope he goes on the good side in S5 instead of being killed by el. It's hard to find such actors who have such dedication and determination to play their role and killing him off would be a waste, like how can 001 the supposedly main villian of a full season only get 3 episodes while a CGI Demogorgon gets 2 whole season despite being a side villian

That reveal was amazing. Thought El murdered everyone in that facility the entire time. Very unpredictable, which is the best!

Quick theory: vecnas mom had the same powers. That’s how she knew what he was up to and she was the one messing with the radio to fight him off, which is why he murdered her first.
Oo thats an interesting theory, especially since they never go into full detail about what Victor saw in her...
@@zaradavies9194 right, and the only thing he did say about her was that she was on to him, so she had to go, which was right after the radio turned on by itself. I doubt he turned on the radio himself since it crests a lifeline for his victims. Though, I’m not entirely sure how vecnas father heard music and came out of the trance, especially when Vecna later stated he passed out, releasing his father, because Vecnas mother was already dead.

@@Castroo I’m obsessed with plot twists. This season was the best so far and they almost got me. I actually write a lot and I’m very impressed with what they’ve done with this show.

@@madtitan0825 I honestly didn’t think it was THAT gory, compared to other TV-MA shows and just R rated horror movies in general but it was definitely gorier than most things in the show.

The actress that played Max (Sadie Sink) really knocked it out of the park this season. For me, she went from a pointless secondary character from the last two seasons to an important main character in just a few episodes. Her performance throughout the season was just incredibly impressive, but episode 4 was phenomenal.
The last time I was this impressed was with Will's (Noah Schnapp) performance in Season 2, after basically just being a plot point in season 1.

The running up that hill sequence after probably one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen on any show was so powerful, absolute magic and she absolutely acted the hell out of the whole of it, really really special, can't praise it enough, hope she gets a lot more roles in the future

I feel like they underutilized Will and Mike. Wish we could have seen more of their dynamics this season.
I just really appreciate that they didn't end in a cliffhanger. Vecna's reveal is making us just speculate on what is next rather than speculate on what the heck happened

I knew the guy helping 11 was definitely going to be revealed as 001 with how they set it up.
But the added twist of him also being Vecna AND Creels little weird son was very cool and mindblowing and impressive writing.
I doubt they thought of this all the way back in 2016, but it's impressive that they can tie it back together very cleverly.
Man it was the opposite for me... I had a feeling he was Vecna but had no clue he was gonna be 001 or creels son
@@mloveys touché lol. When I first saw him in the flashbacks, I did not make the connection. But when I look back on it, Victor’s son and 001 looked so alike. However, I did not expect him to be revealed as Vecna
it was a bit hinted, but very subtle.
@@GabesEdtiz it was obvious from the first flashback, they never focused on the son or said he suffered from any nightmares. Also the fact he died in hospital was straight cap. But I never knew he was the one helping el

One scene I wanna say that was underrated cause it wasn’t action packed was the whole mirroring of the younger kids riding their bikes in the real world to go to Eddie’s while the older kids Steve Nancy Robin and Eddie was riding bikes in the upside down to go to Eddie’s as well……that little shot was perfect

And for me next being eleven, as soon as she was taken back to her memories her entire story picked up, while the 3rd group with mike will and the others wasn’t nearly as interesting as the others I’m sure it’ll become a big deal when they finally make it to eleven
Eleven won over Vecna by not thinking about anger, but love. So it stands to reason the ending is very much a Love conquers all moment.
Yes omg. because 001 told her to think of her saddest angriest moment and she thought about all the bullying she went thru but that didn't work. instead she thought about the good things similar to how the only way to escape vecna like max did is to think about the things she loves in life.

I wouldn't say love necessarily, probably just happy moments because Max and Creel also escaped from Vecna/001's power by being reminded of something that made them happy. Something the video didn't mention is that 001 wasn't able to kill Victor Creel because he was reminded of the 'voice of an angel', rather than 001 not being strong enough, causing him to collapse or whatever.
Classic anime plot
I never thought they could outdo season 1, but man I was proved wrong. This was a masterpiece. Netflix might not realize this but Duffer Brothers seem to be their greatest investment this year so far.
I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but it was pretty good. Started out strong, then started to drag/get corny, then the final episode was great. 001's motivation of "balance" is extremely generic though.
@@OWlsfordshire yeah I completely agree. This was much better than season 3 but it’s still not even close to season 1. I don’t like the corny-ness. Season 1 never had any of that so it had far more dread than say, hallucinating spiders, or fighting weird bats.

I think this season comes very close to season 1, maybe even surpassing it, we'll see as time goes on but yeah I agree that season 4 was very impressive. It never dragged for me and was so much better than season 2 and 3.

I realized One was Vecna when he said “it’s time” to El when they were playing chess. That gave it away for me. And then the way he killed everyone in the lab was strikingly similar to Vecna. Volume 1 is definitely my favorite. They did so well! A complete masterpiece!

I literally realised Vecna was one and the boy when they first did the flashback when Nancy was talking to victor creel in the prison, because they never focused on the boy and the killing of animals is like the go to starter for mass serial killers but I had no idea that the person helping El was one or that he had powers, crazy

my first inclination was when he was sitting with El at the Plenko board and said he knew One very well. He was acting very different than all the other orderlies, so that raised some flags
The actor who plays One (Jamie Campbell) was also in Twilight, Vampire, and earlier Steve asked if Vecna is like a Vampire or something...There you have it!

When she began to run, I was running with her in thought with words of come on Max you can do this as if she could hear me as she was running to the sound of Kate Bush Running Up That Hill. Stranger Things is a great example of what can be done when you have a full planned story and end your series on your own terms instead of letting ratings dictate when your story is over.
I love the fact that the actor who played Freddy Krueger (Robert Barton Englund) was in this season of Stranger things, as this season definitely had a nightmare on Elm street vibes to it. 👌👍

The Nina Project was a very clever way of getting around having to use expensive cgi for Eleven throughout the entire "flashback" scenes in the Hawkins Lab. It felt natural, like that part of the plot/writing was created just because it was supposed to be part of the story, instead of to fix or avoid having to use a certain filmmaking or editorial technique. A lot of times when a decision like that is made it can feel very unorganic, and is painfully clear that it was written into the plot just to navigate a budget issue and allow them to avoid having to use a certain method of effects, etc. This was very good writing, in my opinion, and it meant they only needed to show Eleven as a child one or two times in the mirror for it to work.
Budget was no problem at all, they had a budget of €40m per EPISODE iirc

@@PablitotheChicken I didn't say Stranger Things had a small budgett or was short on funds. And regardless of how huge or small a budget for a show is, they still have to make choices about where they want to spend the money, and this let them use more on other things.

I was annoyed about the gates opening where they died, this means there is a gate lying in the middle of a road somewhere that somehow nobody has noticed or driven into. Loved the series but little things get to me haha

@@jakew6076 but in that Gaten Matarazzo interview from season 1 he was told already that although some other kids like 11 were dead, some were punished to the Upside Down and became creatures themselves, so, they had a plan for this plot twist already from the beginning

The show was originally going to be an anthology series (aka new characters with new actors for each season) and they had no intention of ever expanding the characters or that story from S1, not really all planned out. With the huge unexpected success they got, they had to redirect their creativity decisions. Seems like and feels like the duffer brothers were really making up stuff along the way for S2 and S3. No plan what so ever and therefore they had to tie a plot threat of why does this monster want Eleven for example. They had to figured it themselves in order to make their story sense. I wouldn't call it a twist as I thought it was rather obvious, a cliche origin villain story, but to some extent, makes sense as to why the main villain has been wanting Eleven. So in a way this season does seem the duffer brothers are trying to tie things back from the main S1 stories together, for the most part.
One theory I have for vol 1 is that this is why 11 is constantly hunted by the upside down because she locked 1 there and he became the “king” of the upside down

@@REDDRomeo it’s the other way around, the upside down still existed before 001 and the mind flayer upon contact made him his “general” as Dustin says it in the same episode so vecna is the mind flayers henchmen
The transformation in the upside down wasn’t what gave away that One was Vecna. It was revealed a few minutes before as he was explaining his backstory to Eleven at the same time Nancy was being shown his childhood.

Yeah, they clearly showed that 001 killed the kids in the lab in the same way vecna killed his victims. It was quite obvious.

My guess is that the show ends with Eleven staying in Upside Down as the queen, making sure it poses no threat to the world. There have been several conversations about combining or swapping things and how Eleven doesn't belong. Also, Kate Bush's song has a big role. "If I only could, make a deal with God, I'd get him to swap our places".
Yeah i agree thats a possibility. Either way, i think since it’s confirmed that season 5 will be the last, season 4 will end on a huge cliffhanger or the team will lose. Basically this will be the infinity war of stranger things, then season 5 will be the endgame.
@@karineprusalyan5699 Yeah, the fact that the gates are opening every season forces the writers to come up with some "final" solution. The crew defeating Vecna wouldn't really change anything at this point 🤔

I personally love the moment in episode 7 I think where we get see just how powerful the demogorgon truly was,able to tear through 6-7 fully grown men with weapons with relative ease and brutality
It was a great reminder of the demogorgons strength especially after it’s been overshadowed by the mind flayer and Vecna recently

Just finished it! I can honestly call this a true masterpiece. It does a perfect job of balancing plot and character driven storytelling. Each A,B,C, etc plot perfectly tie into each other while showing off examples of almost every genre popular in 80's film. Action and Adventure with the Russian plot, Mystery and Thriller with the kid plot, and even Romance and Conspiracy with the California Plot. All while under a beautiful nostalgic Sci-fi/ Fantasy blanket. The upside down journey is literally a dungeons and dragons campaign. I could go on and on about the cast, pacing, cinematography but it's completely self apparent. This is a love letter to 80's Horror and Culture!
How does the California plot tie into anything! They didn't even show us what happened to Will, Jonathan, Mike and Argyle in the end!!

Ahahhahahahahaha this is a masterpiece too huh. Lmfao you eat up media like no tomorrow! This was easily the worst season of the series, and the fact they want to make another after it to make more money if even worse.
My favorite part about this shows writing is how there are 0 loose ends... everything is explained and paid off, all the puzzle pieces fit. The duffer Brothers deserve an amazing movie gig after this show, they're seriously talented.....
The one/kreel/vecna reveal was so awesome and a welcome surprise. One of the benefits of being able to binge the show because it would for sure have been figured out if the episodes were released week to week. People immediately figured out the crack on the wall at end of the first 8 minutes was a tear to the upside down when Netflix released that early

This was my most favorite season of stranger things. After the 1st episode I couldn’t stop watching the rest so finished it in a day
For me it released at 3 am and I only watched 2 episodes and had to sleep

Hey guys, I just realized that in Season 4: "Dear Billy" Max hit Vecna in his neck in order for her to escape his grasp. The same area that 001 had that "tracking device" in which of course limited his powers!
Nah vecna had his tracking device on the right side of his face max tore off a tendril on his left side
It actually wasn’t a tracking device, it was some kind of device to stop him from using his powers, doctor Brenner knew how powerful he was and that he could easily kill everyone there, which he did, he tricked Eleven by saying it was a tracker
I love how stranger things introduces new characters and makes you love them with ease and then group them with another of your favourite characters and somehow make you love both even more. The series does a fantastic job at making you feel attached to these characters.
Nancy Wheeler absolutely killed it this season. She was such a leader, so smart, intelligent, literally solved half the mysteries! Her and Robin made a very fun duo! Steve and Dustin, as always so, SO entertaining. I loved Lumax this season. Sadie blew my mind away in ep 4.
The Hawkin's storyline was my favourite but I hated how they kept hinting Stancy. All that character development, for what?!! 3 seasons of building Jancy up for what?!! (At least Natarlie is married IRL) For Stancy to go back to each other?? Why are we repeating plots?? I HATED the Stancy hints.
And Will and Mike this season? Their plot was so weak. They didn't even show us what happened to them in the end! And I feel so bad for Charlie. What is his character now? A stonehead? They've been doing him dirty since S3!
The Russia storyline was a complete drag but I did like Hopper's speech.

The stancy hints is probably leading up to steve's deaths. He may sacrifice himself for nancy around the end. Also emphasised with eddie's introduction this season. Russian storyline was not a drag at all. There are also 2 more episodes left so we'll see will and mike alot more.
You just summarized my overall thoughts about this season haha. There was indeed a number of flaws in this season but the cliffhanger in the end really carried it for me.
Was I the only one who at first assumed the school counsellor had something to do with it because of all the clocks? And every student Vecna killed was counselling with her. Probably not but I still found it strange

This season was just Amazing, the twist ending, the visuals, and even the new characters are perfect. Episode 4 is one of my favorite TV episode of all time since Game of Thrones's "Hold the Door" episode. I was at the edge of my seat rooting for Max and her acting was top tier, the music and scenery was enough to make a grown man cry

Makes more sense now why the Mindflayer was so hellbent on killing El. It knew she had the potential to eradicate him due to seemingly enlisting 001 to help him. If he is like a 'general' for him as described. The Mindlfayer will eventually return at full power in a later season no doubt. The demigorgon's didn't work, manifesting a weaker physical body didn't work, so now 001 is going to attempt himself.

You're absolutely right! This filled the gap into our question on why the "Mind Flayer" is so mad to kill Eleven, like this sums up that MF is really threatened by El because he/she knew that El can defeat him/her with El's power.
I think the mind flayer wanted to kill El because Vecna created it and is an extension of him which is why it shares Vecna/001s hatred for El
I have said this in every season and i am gonna say that in this season too Dustin literally steals the show for me each time. IDK what they would have done without EL and Dustin.
I feel like the character of Eddie is, at least in part, a reference to the main character Eddie from Trick or Treat (1986) since both are likeable, dorky metal heads in a supernatural narrative, not to mention that that movie revolves around the whole Satanic Panic frenzy of the 80s, which we also see added into the storyline in the new season of the show.
I like how how Netflix releases its content! It’s the only platform that does this now and it’s nice to binge a show. I feel the only reason you says you want it released weekly is so you have more content you can make videos about 😂

The twist does get extra props for the Orderly being both the Creel Boy AND Vecna, but him turning out to be 001 was obvious from the moment 001 was first mentioned.

I was worried that like the second and third seasons, season 4 would decrease in quality, but I actually ended up really enjoying it! It is probably the second best season after the first, of course. There's some plot lines that I really hope we see and explore more of in the final season, but I am excited for the ending. I did predict that the guy was 001, but I did not predict that he was vecna. I think that it was an appropriate plot twist that makes a lot of sense, not like a lot of modern plot twists that are just put in for audience shock value. Excited for season 5 in a month!

This season is absolutely amazing! The plot, the villain, the new and original characters. Chefs kiss. I’ll never understand how people said this show should’ve stopped after season 1 or that hate on the show at all. They must not be watching the same thing because stranger things is amazing. I can’t wait for volume 2 to come out
I don't mind having the longer episodes to show more "mundane" things! It helps with the character development and keeps me invested in the characters. Otherwise, to me, it would feel like I was watching Dr. Strange 2 where they had one event after the other too quickly. I think it helps to have "down time" to catch up and digest what you saw. Plus, those moments are what makes it a cinematic experience, as opposed to burning through plot. Overall, this was a great season!! I love your breakdowns and enjoy comparing my viewing experiences with yours!
Yes, the little character moments are what makes the show so good imo. I dont see why people think all stories should just burn through the plot 100% and have no breaks at all.

I just got finished with Vol. 1 and i am stunned absolutely blown away this plot has been a masterpiece and I can’t believe the twist that it takes every moment there was always something interesting or something hinting at something else it all leads back to one thing and that’s what I love about this show they never fail to amaze me can’t wait for Vol. 2

I called him being victor's son it seemed very sus that only he was put in a coma with victor commenting that he supposedly died afterwards despite not seeing the body and the pruit igor and prophecies theme fits perfectly with his big villain reveal and really shows the parallels with him being like an evil version of dr manhattan from watchmen.
What’s sad is the government knew Victor didn’t kill his family and still let everyone think he was crazy. Just to cover it up for an easy story they let him rot forever thinking he’s insane.

That last episode was incredible. That dude being 001 was so obvious ever since he himself randomly brought it up, but him also being Vecna was totally unexpected. Good way to actually connect some of the stories cause until then it really felt like everyone was just fu*king off on their own
Really enjoyed this first half... I liked how each story thread had it's own kinda feel... the kids in Hawkins having a Nightmare on Elm Street Vibe, whereas the kids in LA had a more War Games feel. And then you had the more comedic storyline of Joyce and Murray and finally the Hopper's grim story - yet all intertwining wonderfully
just wanna say- there is definitely something going on between will and mike. the idea that will likes mike but is scared to admit his feelings because he knows the response will only be negative is hinted at through conversations between the two. as well as, at the beginning when will is painting the picture that he hesitates giving to mike, and eleven *SPECIFICALLY* states she thinks that he is painting it for a girl he likes.

Totally agree.. Will has been the only main character without a love interest so far so I've been looking forward to learning more about him. Back in season 2, Mike was the only one by Will's side the entire time he was possessed by the mind flayer, so it makes sense if Will has feelings for him. Another hint was in episode one where Will reacted disgusted when that girl in his class was tryna touch feet (or it could just be a normal reaction cause he's uninterested but hey, who knows). In their conversation before leaving with Argyle, with Will telling Mike about being afraid to tell the people you care for most the truth, you could tell Will was feeling this in that moment.
Sadly Will cant win this but hopefully our Robin will get the bad bitches for the alphabet community

Such a great season so far! Can’t wait for Part II! El getting her powers back is such an awesome trip through her memories. I was amped to see 001 but then you realize he’s the true villain.
That last episode, I absolutely did not expect. I was like genuinely shocked for the first time in a long time when watching a show/movie. When eleven's guard ended up being 001, I was blown away. AND WHEN 001 ENDED UP being VECNA, I was jaw dropped at my seat. Amazing script. Could not have done it better.
I’m getting Jedi vibes here with Creel being a sith and eleven being a Jedi in the making. Which making me think he could be her dad or some kind of relation to her we still don’t know who elevens dad is. What happened to 08 from season 2 obviously not all the kids where killed and 08 seems to have a weaker power version of his illusion ability. I am excited to see the hole gang get back together though and take him down

I felt like it was implied that One is the biological father of all the kids in Hawkins lab. He said something along the lines of Brenner wanting to clone him because of his power, yet he didn’t specify how they cloned him. I think it’s supposed to be another big reveal for later in the season that he is El’s father. Which you’re right is very Empire Strikes Back and we know how much they love paying homage to 80s films. The ages match up too. If One was like 11 years old in 1959 then he’s 31 in 1979. Oldest kid in Hawkins lab was like 13 so they probably started taking One’s “dna” when he turned 18.

I could not stop watching this season. I was up all night watching this. This season delivers some of the greatest content of any series I've ever watched.
Here’s all my finale predictions based on tropes and D&D lore
- seems that the most powerful trigger for 11s powers is love, so Mike saying I love you will be how she kills Vecna
- during their D&D fight with Vecna, Sinclair kills Vecna with a critical hit. Maybe they call El’s attack a critical hit
- Vecna is a lich. Therefore he has a phylactery. At least in D&D and they seem to be suggesting his soul mongering. A phylactery is what grants a lich its immortality. It’s a soul jar which vecnas building at the creel house from the traumatized folks, my guess to revive the mind flayer unless there is a bigger bad guy since we have yet to learn the origin of the upside down / the psychic powers, and I don’t think it was 1. After all, Dustin said he was the general
- vecna’s eye and hand are the famous magic items which made the character so famous. So far he has a claw which alludes to the hand of vecna and the eye popping which references the missing eye. I expect him to have his arm chopped off.
- However, it’s the Sword of Kas (El) which betrayed Vecna and cut off those limbs and killed Vecna. A few years later in 2nd edition, the modules Vecna Lives and two others released bringing him back. Now a days, he’s famous for being a villain on Critical Roll and Joe Manginello’s character from the series Arkhan the Cruel canonically possesses the hand in the 5th edition officially published module Descent into Avernus

We didn't see it coming, did we? 100/10 for this season of Stranger Things. Even though there's a lot going on this season, they managed to make it clear and not so overwhelming. Plus the plot WAS AMAAAZINGGG! Who knew this was the beginning, right? CANT WAIT FOR VOL.2

I really hope in part 2 or even in season 5 they go more into the story of how number 8 got out of the lab, they briefly said "before number 8 left us" but there's been very little about her since her introduction in season 2. Seeing as number 8 is the only other number we know about that's alive since we now have the answer to who number 1 is, it seems like there's just too much left unanswered about number 8.
I hope too but I am afraid they will ignore her because of hate Lost Sister episode got. Would love to see her return

I like when they release all the episode all at once. I binged every episode of volume 1 since its release at midnight and the one thing that frustrates me is I have to wait a couple months for volume 2. Ugh oh well.

I think my favorite tool they used to build the connection between 01 and Vecna, is how the use audio, 01’s voice shifts in some of his talks with El, and he clearly sounds like Vecna, it’s very slight, but quite effective.
I love how they did not hold back on the gore. There was bones breaking eyeballs popping heads getting bitten off it was crazy. The story was really solid. Can be a bit jarring sometimes when you spend like 2-3 minutes building up one side of the story and just when something is about to happen it will cut to the other characters and their journey, but other than that volume1 was amazing. Didn’t see the twist of vecna actually being 001 and the double twist of him being the son of victor. The whole time you’re thinking it’s the upside down or the mindflayer messing with the family just for it to be the boy the entire time. Really looking forward to volume 2. I just hope the wait til July goes quickly as we also have better call Saul part 2 coming out then
I like that Netflix releases it all at once, giving the option to binge watch. Which is exactly what I did. I’ll most likely watch this season again without binging like I’ve done the other 3.
So I've just finished the end of season 4 and here are my thoughts on where it may be going and what may have been hinted at so far, here me out on this. Firstly, I think the upside down is a manifestation of 1's subconscious, his view of an ideal world if you will. If you look at what he does to his victims, takes their eyes and breaks their limbs and see the parallel to the demogorgons, they too have no eyes and their anatomy, specifically their joints are backwards (I'll come back to this). I've seen a lot of comments saying about how the Mind Flayer may be using one but I definitely think that the Mind Flayer is a creation of 1's subconscious like everything else in the upside down. It has similar anatomy to a spider which 1 has a love for and is portrayed as kind of a queen to the demogorgons. Now, going back to 1's speech. He mentioned how people are stuck in an endless loops all their lives going around and around in circles, I think that is why in the upside down (the manifestation of his inner world) time stands still. Why it stands still at the specific time of when Will first went missing I'm not really sure. Secondly, I think that the demogorgons are embodiments of his previous victims, referring back to the earlier parallels that can be drawn between the two. Also, how he said how the other patients he killer were not lost and had become a part of him is another direct parallel to how the monster from the upside down worked in season 3, by feeding off what he sees as the weak and absorbing them to grow stronger and stronger. There's a lot more I could go on about but this comment is already too long haha, would love to know what others think about this. And sorry it's a bit badly written, it's kind of a quick splurge of my thoughts.

I think your thoughts sound pretty spot on! To me, it seems like the upside down existed prior, but 11 created the first physical gate into it from our world, when she ripped it open and sent 001 there.. who then as you said manifested his subconscious on that entire world. We see 001/Vecna being suspended and connected to tentacles- which could be the origin point of the larger hive mind of tentacles that entangle the entire surface of upside down.. almost like a spiders web.
And the reason the upside is frozen on the day Will was snatched into it, is maybe because it was the first time Vecna reopened the gate between the upside down and our world- kind of cementing Hawkins, on that particular day, as the unchanging landscape that populated the upside down..
Also, just a side note observation is that 001 was physically flayed during his transformation into Vecna as he fell through upside down.

I think the reason that the Upside Down's time stopped the day Will went missing is because that's when El sent Vecna to the Upside Down. Maybe the first gate opening and Vecna entering the Upside Down was the thing that caused time to stop. Really good theory nonetheless!

It's not on the same day, the incident with 001 took place in 1979 whereas Will disappeared in 1983

It wasn’t the same day as Will’s disappearance. That event took place in October of 1983. The opening scene of season 4 showed that the day El trapped One in the upside down took place in September of 1979. So One/Vecna had presumably 4 years in the upside down before El opened the gate and released the Demogorgon.

Its not the same day. They’re two different events 4 years apart. Eleven trapped One in 1979. Then in 1983, she accidentally released the demogorgon that took Will.
We still have yet to know exactly what Vecna has been doing all this time since 1979. We also still have yet to know how time works in the upside down and how often the upside down duplicates the Earth as part of its reflection. So far we know it duplicated the Earth in 1983 and hasn’t duplicated again since. I’m sure episodes 8 and 9 will clarify more on that.
Easily the best season so far. Every episode was great, in my opinion dear billy and episode 7 were the best. Agree with you about how each episode left a cliffhanger which would of been fine if it was once a week but I don’t mind binging it and having to wait another month. Interested to see if they do have vecna leaving the upside down for a showdown against Eleven, either way I do believe El will get the best of him again and return home to Hopper in the end. I was pretty surprised they left this volume with Nancy still in the upside down but I think episode 8 will start with Steve and probably the others getting her out. Also one last thing I know I can’t be the only one to pick up on this, did they make Will gay for Mike? I know they were best friends and all but they way he looked and talked to him plus made him a painting and just wanted nothing to do with that girl in the classroom when she was touching him was pretty weird. Anyway Great recap and can not wait for these last two episodes

Will is absolutely gay. Mike doesn't seem that way, but there's been clues they will end up as a couple or at least confess their true feelings. Notice how El was complaining about the lack of "love Mike" on his letter's to her? I think that alone is a sign.

Idk why so many people seem to think vecna is the ruler or creator of the upside down. It clearly existed before him, IT transforms him, not the other way around and he is powerful but he really hasnt shown himself to be more powerful than a being (mindflayer) that can literally telepathically control a whole planet of creatures or take away the powers of someone stronger than vecna (eleven) so yea, vecna is powerful but doesnt hold a candle to the mindflayer tbh and definitely not strong enough to create an entire alternate universe. Theres a reason why hes season 4s ultimate villain and not season 5s, that spot is reserved for the mind flayer.
I’m pretty sure the ending hinted to vecna controlling the mind flayer and demogorgons (I could easily be wrong but this is what made sense in my head) well we know it was created beforehand but the mind flayer didn’t appear until years later after vecna being trapped in the upside down and after the demogorgon killed those people in season 1 (1983).. we also know vecna has the ability to create things to mess with people.. a piece of evidence for vecna being either 100% in control of them or being them directly is at the end when it shows Nancy trapped in the empty pool and he talks about remembering every kill.. only he didn’t kill barb.. the demogorgon did.. idk that’s what made sense in my head.. what did u think of that stuff??

The Mind Flayer's the Mind of the upside down, while Vecna's more the guy doing the actual work.
Obviously, the Mind Flayer has an influence on Vecna. I believe it could completely control Vecna, but it obviously doesn't want to.

Also MF completely depowered Eleven and was almost successful at entering the Human world. While Vecna's more killing 1 by 1. Vecna's opening as much gates as he can, so the mind flayer can come through and have a big battle with eleven.

I thought this was a great season. One of the best since season one. Sadie Sink really stood out to me. She's a real actor and I can't wait to see where she goes from here.
