- Ned Stark, though having his life end in such disturbing circumstances, is one of the most interesting characters in the entire game of thrones series. In this video, I’m going to take you through ned’s entire life, from his early days growing up in the vale to his involvement in Robert Baratheon’s rebellion to right up until his execution under the order of King Joffrey Baratheon. Welcome to game of throne lore, this is the life of Eddard Stark.

Jamie murdered a Kinsman. Alton Lannister was a harmless, naive kid, Man by age or not. To what end?! Still very new to the lore, but I do know that in the books, it is a different story. I personally am very much of the "only life can pay for life" pro Vendetta crowd. To have Kin murdering Kin is an especially horrific event. Some one in the Family needs to gut him while he is vulnerable, and exclaim "This pays for Alton!"
If the guilt over killing his own blood does not cause him to slip into an alcohol, regret, and despair-fueled future suicide, how the F does someone live with attempted murder of a 10 year old boy? Having been dumb enough to try and find out what makes a Human turn into Evil given form, and It seems to takes a pretty unique type to kill a kid. If I remember correctly, former Assassin for hire Richard Kuklinski said, he had a thing about 'nobody under 16' And that was coming from someone who had zero remorse. He claimed to never feel anything, that killing a Human was, to him, killing a bug, James seems to be sleeping quite easily.
Lastly, I would not be too quick to think he is headed towards King Jon with any true 'good intent' Would not be surprised to see him try to screw Jon and pals over. He is too far gone, when it comes to Cersei. "No one walks away from me" I think she said. That, and with all the misery his House has caused, I would not welcome him into the Super-friends, and it would cause a dire point of contention, if Tyrion asked for him and the others agreed.
It is 0315, I really need to put the pipe away, and get some sleep. P.S. The Actor portraying him seems cool, and has a comedic personality, irl. So nothing against him.

Game Of Thronelore at first I thought someone else copied your vid bc I swore I remembered hearing it before, word for word! Then I realized you’re actually just reading of a wiki of Ice and Fire lol. You really should at the very least reference them as the original writers, esp if you’re getting paid for this. It’s not cool getting paid for someone else’s work and no mention or credit to the web page you’re reading off of.
Ned was a man of integrity. Even his enemies knew it. You notice after he died, any time his name was mentioned, everyone remembered him for his loyalty and sense of honor and justice. He left a remarkable legacy.
Many in the kingdom was willing to lend aid to his children because his legacy and name carries so much weight and respect long after his death that people were willing to die for him.
Ironically and suitably enough, this was what Tywin wanted for his family but when he dies, everyone either forgets about the man himself or thinks so low of him that people are either relieved or are willing to harm his family now that he is no longer around.
Its crazy how his reputation was still in tacked. This is really amazing because he tarnished his own name by claiming Jon was his bastard child to keep his sisters promise… then he was labeled as a traitor because he found out the truth about King Roberts fake legacy!
Unlike Cersei, Jaime understood his flaws through humility, which made him question his morals, which transformed his personality. He evolved through suffering. This made him more relatable and "real".
Suffering builds character.
I took satisfaction on cersei's walk of shame, and the fact her plan to give power to a religion back fired so spectacularly, I was honestly dissapointed that she got revenge on a mess she herself created and actually made me hate her more.
I hated Cersei, but actually felt bad for her during the walk of shame. I hated the faith militant as bad as her and didn’t feel bad for the septa she got revenge on in the end. 🤷♀️

Hamm with2ms they pretty much have said that this won’t happen since we will already know everything that happened in the Rebellion by the time Game of Thrones ends... so that sucks...

GRRM already stated that everything during Robert's Rebellion will be known by the end of A song of Ice and Fire. Therefore he won't write a series based off it.

@@dragansnyder2208 The first book is only book I have read. To put John on the wall has two political reasons. First by taking the black he would lost claim to iron throne as he was the true hair and that could lead to a war. Secondly the night watch is beyond of reach of kings and queens, so Roberth would technically not be able to kill him or officialy order such action. Ned know this and planned to say John the true about his monter once he is in black and these the points apply for him. One way or the other he was just a boy and he gets lifetime in prison.

But he couldn't have kept the position with his original character....the lannisters would plot anything and everything to to overthrow him....
I think (jon or Daenerys(the 5,6,7 th season Daenery)) (with Tyrion as his/her hand) would make the best king...
The best King would be honorable to the greatest extent possible, but ruthless to the minimum extent necessary in order to keep justice an honor paramount in the realm. So, Ned w/ Tyrion as hand and Varys for intel might be good.

Joffrey should've been fostered by Ned at Winterfell. It might've improved his character.

If Joffrey went as a young child, yes, I believe he would have been far different than what he was. It's apparent Joffrey is either a sociopath (sociopaths are made usually due to a traumatic event or a parental figure makes them learn said behaviour) or a psychopath (not all psychopaths are evil, the evil ones are usually made to be that way due to horrific experiences as a child. Most are normal, they do pursue adrenaline filled lives though such as being a CEO etc). Joffrey doesn't fit a psychopath typical traits (intelligence, manipulation, not fearful) but he is more similar to a sociopath. Sociopaths can be changed if they're caught early enough and I fully think Ned would hAve been capable of that.
Just my opinion I'm not claiming that this would be the case.
Robert should have married someone else and had legitimate children and then Joffrey could have been evidence of the Lannister's dirty little secret hidden away in Casterly Rock. Then Roberts true children could have been fostered at Winterfell. Win Win

Rheagar forced to marry Elia against his will - leads to the Lyanna incident when he finally finds someone he wanted to marry which potentially ruins plans to remove the mad King - instigating factor of the first war but would it have happened if Rheagar and Lyanna married properly in public?
Jon Arryn marries Lysa to help secure alliance with Riverlands - she turns out to be insane and poisons him removing the man essentially running the 7 Kingdoms just before he was about to deal with the Cersei issue.
Ned marries Catelyn to honour his brother's betrothal and secure Riverlands alliance - Catelyn persuades Ned to trust Little Finger (worst mistake anyone could make), attacks Tyrion which directly leads to the attack on Ned, releases Jaime Lannister which causes the Karstark incident and removes the Lannisters worry over Jaime's safety potentially allowing the deal with the Freys when otherwise it may not have happened.
And finally Robert marries Cersei to secure the loyalty of the Lannisters - If he'd literally married anyone else he would have had proper heirs, Lannister's would have had less power, he may have been happier and a better King (prob not) and none of Cersei's scheming would have happened.
Eddard Stark is one of the most Honourable man in Westeros, but he was backstabbed, littlefinger when he told not to trust him.

The story Rhaegar and Lyanna is wrapped in so much mystery. I'd like to explore that story deeper. The moment they met, what happened after the tourney of Harrenhall. The events leading to his annulment with Ellia ect... it seems like a great piece of the story that should be examined.

After making the books into a major serious Financial to support the Martin big fantasy five books, the books even sold more, thanks to the show more fans are interested in the books and I am having difficulties in reading the fire and blood first volume?

Ned was too bloody good for such a dishonorable, shitty and underhanded world. Maester Aemon spoke wise & true in his reply to Jon, saying “Then he is one man in ten thousand!” after Jon to,d him that *no matter what* , his father Eddard Stark would always do the right thing. That’s the hard truth right there... that even a man such as Ned Stark, whose honor and resolve to stay true to that honor was unwavering, could not survive in a world with people that had two faces & forked tongues. Many were people who he grew up with, almost everyone he knew, their faces familiar but the honor that they once had in their youth faded with each passing year, and I imagine he found himself to be the only man left who had never weakened, not once in all the long years he’d been fighting, his strength & will being put to the test again and again yet he never backed down, not once. I’ll be damned if it doesn’t make me emotional thinking about that, and how heart wrenching it was to see him lie for a false king, slander his own name and that of his house as he was pelted with stones & garbage, chained and bloodied, even then thinking only to save his family from having to withstand the pain of his death...only for it all to be for naught, watching as his own ancestral sword was unsheathed, to be brought down on his neck at the behest of “King” Joffrey. That was damned heartbreaking, and I always like to imagine what his whispers were in the show during the few remaining seconds of his life, if they were prayers or if he was saying “I kept my promise..” which I doubt for some reason, I don’t think Ned Stark would say that. Like, of course he kept the bloody promise, he’s Ned fucking Stark so it’s not a big thing for him I don’t think.
Anyways, I don’t have a mug of ale or red wine, but I do have a cup of coffee... and so I raise a virtual toast to the ever-Honorable Lord Eddard Stark, the only man in all of the Seven kingdoms and perhaps of all time whose mind was purely untainted in regards to anything foul or morally wrong. We shall *NEVER* see his like again, truly.

Pote Tater He was arguably one of the most honorable characters and in the world and time he lived in was mostly good with little bad in him as far as human beings go, because no one is perfect. That being said, I am not sure how his wife Catelyn Stark felt every time she heard everyone else say how honorable her husband was, that being that in her heart she thought he cheated & brought home another woman’s child for her to raise. I wonder why he never told her the truth, and made her swear to not tell anyone else, things would have been much better & easier for her to live with,made her and Jon have a much better relationship. Did he not trust his wife enough? I mean, I know why he didn’t tell her or anyone, because of the danger that Jon would be in if anyone found out who’s child he really was, but since he lied to his wife about Jon being a basterd, couldn’t he have easily have lied and said it was his sisters child with an unknown man and not Rheager, but that he was going to tell everyone else that Jon was a basterd, at least his wife would have known that Ned didn’t really cheat on her, and she wouldn’t have been so hateful & unloving while having to raise Jon along with her own children. Also, Ned lied to his kids and to everyone else about the near fatal fight outside of the tower of joy, claiming he alone beat & killed the Knight that was the Sword of the Morning, that fought with the sword Dawn ( forgive me, I forget his name at the moment) when really Howland Reed stabbed him from behind, saving Ned from being killed, allowing Ned to deliver the final blow. This was really a lie that gave Ned a huge kill that made many people start to consider him a great swordsman. As well as lying to his best friend, Robert about his basterd son, and keeping from him that his sister was really in love with someone other then him, even allowing Robert to believe that Rheager not only kidnapped but RAPED his sister Lyanna, along with the rest of the world, knowing that was NOT true. I get that he couldn’t TELL Robert that Lyanna and Rheager had a baby and were in love, but he didn’t have to go along with the lie that Rheager raped his sister, it still could have been covered up and kept the truth from being known for reasons of safety because Robert would have probably killed Jon as a baby had he known the truth, but he could have lied about Rheager kidnapping Lyanna,but to allow the lie about him raping her too was a bit much. So ALOT of the honorable Ned Starks life was based on MANY lies. Especially when you think about the people he lied to being people that trusted & loved him & that he loved the most. He let his wife believe, and ultimately she died thinking in her heart that her beloved, honest husband cheated on her and made her raise another woman’s baby. And that gave way for such a hatred to fester and alter Catelyn Starks whole personality & the way she thought and lived. He lied to his children about winning a fight against one of the best known Knights of all time. He lied to his best friend, and to the whole world. So, was he truly honorable to the people he was closest to?.... Just something that has crossed my mind...
Darla•Rae• Dyson• Yes, I believe Ned had many convictions, and I’m sure his mind waged war with itself constantly after being let in on such an important secret. In regards to the battle at the tower of Joy and the defeat of Ser Arthur Dayne who was the Sword of the Morning, I believe Ned never gave the specifics on that battle, he certainly never boasted or anything like that, but he did say that he was the one who killed him, which was true to fact. Ned did deliver the killing blow, however badly he felt about it. In the show you can see the look of confusion & despair on his face as Ser Arthur fell to the ground after Howland struck him, dropping his sword Dawn with a dagger in his back. So the situation wasn’t exactly honorable, but even Arthur Dayne seemed to accept the fate he had been given, however underhanded it was, looking up at Ned as if waiting for him to finish the job. It is said that Ned loved his sister Lyanna with *all* his heart, and throughout the books it’s brought up in his thoughts again and again, the words she said to him as she desperately clung to life, “Promise me Ned.. Promise me. Promise me.”. So we all know the dishonor that comes with breaking a promise, especially a promise from someone you love with *all your heart* , and to have that much love inside you for another person is no small thing. I look at all this as if I was in their place, it’s much easier then because that’s as close as you can get to knowing that character, because however fictional he/she may be, they’re still human, and the best way to know what another human is thinking or doing, or going to do is by putting yourself in their shoes, as opposed to thinking of them in a sort of categorical sense. I believe that if ANY word whatsoever were to be told about what Ned knows of Lyanna & Rhaegar, even if it was just to ease the mind of his wife Catelyn by telling her the child is not his, that would start a chain reaction of questions that lead to more questions, and it would’ve been impossible to stop the truth from coming out, meaning that most likely the seven kingdoms would all be thrown into political chaos & anarchy, which would lead to revolts and rebellions etc... it would’ve probably culminated with the deaths of thousands of innocents, which Ned could never allow, for he had already seen how Roberts Rebellion wreaked chaos & death across the kingdoms, all from a simple lie... a lie that they all thought up on their own when Lyanna & Rhaegar vanished, because it was somehow easier to believe that Rhaegar was just a wretched spawn of the Mad King who stole Lyanna from her home and was torturing her and raping her, instead of thinking that perhaps they had fallen in love with each other, and knowing that no one would accept it they left everyone behind to fulfill that love. Now Robert’s thoughts on the matter were very clear from the books and the show, but the books definitely convey his toxic, unchanging mindset on the matter better. It showed that Ned truly believed in his gut that no matter what truth he revealed to Robert, there would be no change in his mind about what Rhaegar did to Lyanna. In real life, I cannot imagine the amount of seething, broiling hatred & fury that you have to have towards someone or something to actually dream *every* night about sending that someone or something from their existence. Every night he dreamed of killing Rhaegar, over & over again. No matter what truth was revealed to him, in Robert’s mind Lyanna had been ripped away from him, forever gone, leaving a hole within him that all the seven kingdoms couldn’t fill. The fact that Robert had been wed to her in the sight of the Seven and all the gods, showing that he was hers and she was his just adds to the despair & anguish that he must have felt. His rage was a volatile thing, and Ned knew it well. So it seems poor Ned was stuck, given a truly impossible choice which would bring dishonor to him and those he loved either way... he could do the honorable thing and reveal the hard truth about his supposed bastard and his connection to Rhaegar & Lyanna, which would lift the burden of the Lie off his shoulders, but at the same time he would be utterly betraying the final wish and plea of his beloved sister, breaking his promise to her that he would keep Jon(Aegon) safe from Robert’s clutches. He would also be betraying himself in many ways, I imagine if he had revealed the truth it would have torn him apart from the inside.
Pote Tater Yes, it was truly a terrible choice to make & either way a heavy burden to bare. I really loved his character, and was sad that he had to go the way he did under that evil “King” Joffrey. I haven’t read the books yet, I ordered the 1st book, and can’t wait to start as I am sure the books will give a deeper insight to the truest raw thoughts, reasonings and internal feelings of every character in their POV chapters.... HOPEFULLY I can read through all of the books before Season 8 starts, and then GRRM releases his next book. Thanks for your explanation, it made me see Ned’s point of view in a whole different perspective then the one I had first come up with, it makes me see that his honor WAS deeply rooted in his blood.

I also thought it was interesting that Ned is one of the few truly honorable characters in the story, and GRRM basically punishes him for this. Ned being so honorable is exactly what gets himself killed. He chooses to be Hand of the King due to feeling loyalty to Robert, despite it going against his better judgment. When he finds out the truth about Joffrey, he confronts Cersei directly about it and tries to save her and her son's life, despite the fact he knows the Lannisters have gone after him and nearly killed his son. When Joffrey takes the throne, he openly protests it out of a sense of loyalty to Robert and the crown and gets himself arrested, despite not having really much to gain by exposing this truth, or even very strong evidence. And when he makes a false confession for the sake of Sansa, he then gets killed anyway. The moral of Ned's story: if you are an honorable person, you will be repeatedly punished for it.

The amazing thing that the show did is no matter how insane the villainy was there was always a bright spot in every character no matter what deplorable things they have done I am a guy who waited until three months ago to start watching it and I regret it but no better time to start than now

The caretaker who played Ned Stark . The British actor Sean Bean always played bad caretaker in the movie. But wen he was playing in Game of thrones absolutely love him. He very good actor.

Ned is a selfless, honorable, just man that did what he thought was right, and it got him killed too early.
Cersei is a selfish, honorless, corrupt woman that did whatever it takes to get her way, and because of this willingness, survives to the very end

I feel, The biggest mistake Ned made, was letting Cersei know, he knew her and jaime's secret. When he first found out, he should of just kept it to himself...

Everybody is talking about Eddards honor leading to his death but actually Cersei wanted to spare him because of his honor. She trusted Eddard to keep his word. It was only because of the cruelty of Joffrey that he died.
I remember back in S1 when i constantly calling him Boromir.
It’s honestly refreshing to read characters that are written in a realistic light because a lot of authors write their characters like they are the utmost paragon savior figures that could do no wrong, but GRRM writes characters how people are in real life there are no truly good people everyone has shades of gray just some people have it more then other but there are no perfect people

Ned Stark one of my favorite characters, cuz he held considerable admiration and inspiration along side his honor and pride along side how much influence he can hold.

GRRM has said that they will also be his parents in the book. It is considered canonical at this point, both in the show and in the books.

Ned didn't get his leg broken. He was stabbed from behind by a Lannister soldier, in the leg, so Jamie could win the fight. Jamie had honor at that point. I just love that music.
In the books his horse was cut out from under him in the fight and they fell with the horse landing on him.
I think GRRM uses Ned Stark in a very clever way. When the story starts, we the audience take Ned's side. We think of him as the good guy and thus everyone who opposes him (the Lannisters, etc) as the bad guys. We want to protect Robert's reign and believe in "the rightful ruler," less because we agree with it but because it's what our protagonist wants and we're inclined the root for him. When Ned is killed, this throws us off, and from that point on we stop having one side we root for. The story has moral ambiguity right from the beginning, but Ned's death is the definitive blow to the notion that this will be a "black and white" story, and from then on, we start rooting for various characters on all sides.

The only judgement I don’t trust of Neds is confronting Cersei before getting Arya and Sansa out of Kings Landing and back in the North. Though Sansa would have been virtually impossible to get out publicly, he should have sent the girls away in the night, telling them of the danger and then confronted Cersei. Robb and Catelyn could have easily intercepted the girls after Robb calls his banners or they would have simply made their way back to Winterfell and would have been with Brann and Rickon. Everything that happens to the 2 girls is his fault
Eh if Robb Stark was a man of Honor he wouldn't have died when and how he did. Yes he chose true love but he had a previous arrangement that he either should have Honored or negotiated on again by promising different marriages involving his other siblings or something along those lines.
Also its funny that its called Roberts Rebellion when the Starks had more reason than anyone to be fighting and the Rebellion was started by Jon Arryn anyways.

The books and the tv show are fairly different. It's difficult to say whether R+L=J is cannon but I'm confident that it'll be in the books as George R R Martin has told David Benioff the ending in the event of his death (since he knows he's fairly old).

When I was rewatching game of thrones for the upcomming 8 season. I noticed that in S1E5 Ned smirks at yoren when he says he is looking for ‘’scum in the dungeon that might be fit for sevice’’.
I thought that the Starks respected the Night’s watch, especially since his brother was serving at that time. I was wondering, why did ned make this gesture, the smerking that is.

Ned Stark definitely respects tradition and the work that the Night's Watch is performing. Due to the Starks close ties to the Night's Watch Ned also realises that many of their members are from the lower echelon of society. The comment at Yoren is merely a joke directed to the state of the order as it is.
Ned has massive respect for the nights watch alas his brother is first ranger I think it's just a joke between then ned knows how the recruits are found only idiots like Jon wud ask to join without question
Honor is a great thing, but it can blind you too. Ned was also a bit too honorable with his attitude about Jaime killing Aerys and saving ALL of King's Landing. Honor can also come off as arrogance and naivete thinking that other people have honor too.
Shannon Reynolds but Ned didn't know he had saved kingslanding,as stated in the books he rode the throne room on his horse to find Jamie sitting on the throne with his bloodied blade across his lap and warts dead on the floor ! Basically in his eyes he murdered the king he wa meant to protect and die for then sat on the throne which despoiled it cud he had no right to it and he had an open blade sat across his lap which is a gesture of anyone who enters is like a fuck you sort of situation..I don't think Ned cud believe his own eyes plus he never liked the lannisters and as Jamie says he judged him without asking what actually happened then Jamie gets off the throne and tells Ned ""I was just keeping it warm for you ""lol I suppose Ned cud if taken it for himself all he had to do was take it

The tower of joy incident is really weird and can still be something else entirely. I understand that while Ned and Robert was not in good terms during the supposed timeline of the TOJ, would it not make more sense if Robert went to rescue Lyanna? Why would Rhaegar keep Lyanna in Dorne. Her wife who she betrayed so blatantly was a Dornish princess. Even the presence of the 3 kingsguard was quite weird/
