  • Friends, I recently spoke to the Catholic educators of the Archdiocese of Vancouver on the importance of sharing the Gospel. We must convey the distinctiveness and demand of Christianity. We must proclaim the resurrection and lordship of Jesus. We must be evangelizers!

I love this. I'm 21 years old and will be receiving first communion and confirmation at the Easter vigil this year. Your ministry has helped me on my journey to become Catholic. I share my spiritual experiences with others through blogging and I've been studying the faith deeply, with more studying to go. It always brings a smile to my face when people tell me that my faith inspired them to come back to Catholicism or to look into it. I hope you know that the work you do with the Word On Fire ministry is so worthwhile and good. Thank you so much for everything you do.

This is so good that I don't know how to express it. Yesterday, I was reflecting on my Catholic education at a Catholic school. The nuns gave me the information about the faith, but they didn't transmit me the passion that comes with cultivating a close, personal relationship with God. Faith was more a bunch of rules foreign to me as I grew up. I had to go through my own journey by learning in depth about my precious faith, which Bishop Barron has been a pivotal part. Thank you for your wonderful service Bishop Barron, and may God and our Most Holy Mother bless you and protect you always.

Great talk Bishop Barron. It's weird how different things can be significant for our faith. When I was going through RCIA we had a young newly ordained priest of the diocese who had recently returned from studying Mariology in Rome. He was going over the flight to Egypt episode, and I asked him if there was anything in particular that convinced him that it all really happened since there's so much controversy regarding elements of the nativity story, e.g. the census, the birth in Bethlehem, etc. He said that they visited some place in Egypt where the Holy Family is said to have stayed and that's what convinced him. The next day I was reading the Bible during lunch at work and somehow stumbled across the latter part of Isaiah 19 where it talks about the "pillar on the outskirts," and things just clicked. I had to hide my tears because I knew if anyone saw me and asked what the matter was I wouldn't be able to explain it. But yeah, for me a big one has been typology, from Adam's rib, to the door of Noah's ark, to Ezekiel's river flowing from the temple, to the wound in Jesus' side, parallels between old and new with Joshua, and Joseph, etc. That stuff blows my mind. Just the other day I watched a video from Brant Petrie talking about how the story of Isaac is so utterly bizarre until you look at it in light of the NT. One reaches a point where you just can't help but believe. Faith becomes more about making decisions as an individual which is truly a gift.
    Peace and Grace~

    • @ucheuju9348
      @ucheuju9348 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Typology really is phenomenal. I have started the Bible in a year plan with Fr Mike Schmitz and when I read the account of the test of Abraham and Isaac, I was so beside myself with excitement. Thanks to Scholars like Brant Pitre, Peter Kreeft on typology, whenever I read the OT, I do so in light of the NT and vice versa. Just like the two Disciples on their way to Emmaus, their hearts were set aflame when Jesus expounded Scripture by telling them how the Prophets spoke about Him. That’s Typology and it throws more light on the Eucharist, Mary, Baptism, etc.

    • @Ian-nb9iw
      @Ian-nb9iw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@ucheuju9348 That's what's up! I try to get into that 'Road to Emmaus' mindset at every Mass. It really transforms the experience. It's easy to get caught up thinking that this is something we're doing for God, when really it's the reverse. There are so many organs, saints, and hidden gems in the church, all sent by the Father through the Son in the Spirit. It can be overwhelming, and that's a good thing. Thank you for making my day!
      Peace and grace~

The Jewish historian Josephus mentions in his writings that the blood and water from the sacrifices would wash out from the side of the Temple like a font. It blew my mind when I first heard the connect between that and the blood and water gushing from Christ's side on the cross, symbolizing the birth of His bride the Church. Just as Eve was born from the side of Adam, so is the Church born through the waters of baptism when the benefits of Christ's redeeming blood are applied to the believer.

    Thank you Bishop Barron,
    God bless you always.
As believers in Christ, I think the first and foremost action to rely upon in evangelization is the Holy Spirit, we must pray and ask for the Holy Spirit to give us His charisms, boldness, and guidance in proclaiming the gospel and converting non-believers. After this, then I think we can get to the technical aspects of evangelization and conversion for conversations, dialogues, or teachings.
I believe the most powerful tool of evangelization is miracles, that is what Jesus utilized during His ministry, what Peter and Paul did, what Our Lady does, what St. Pio did all the other Saints, and what Lord Jesus keeps on doing today; such as the miracles of the Holy Eucharist and other countless miracles which converted and transformed individuals or even a mass of people to Jesus. And for that, I think we must always put God first, because in the end, I believe it is God Himself who chooses and brings in His people, God sows the seeds and we are the workers who must reap the harvest right?
I agree with you Bishop that the dumbing down of the faith is never good, especially to the new generation of apostate atheists who are misled to have the wrong ideas about God and then decide that 'this god' does not exist. You are right that we need to bring in the arguments and theological works of St. Augustine, The Summa, and all the great works of the Church for people to understand, then they will be able to read the Holy Bible and understand God in the light of the truth.
I was an atheist myself because during uni I read atheist and science articles and books, and I listened to people like Dawkins, Hitchens, Neil DeGrasse-Tyson, etc just like the other people around. But God's divine providence brought me back to the Church, the Holy Eucharist plays a pivotal role. That is why I really love our new beatified holy young man, Carlo Acutis. I think it is super important for us to proclaim the truth of the Holy Eucharist as well, the very real presence of our Lord Jesus.
We believe that the Holy Spirit is at work and always at work to bring in people back to the Church, even though right now we are at a crisis of apostasy in the west and other parts of the world. Before the modern era, or in societies where freedom of expression against God, or religions, is strictly limited, religions can enjoy a great deal of privileges and hence the faith in God cannot be easily defiled shamelessly as in most western countries and developed countries today. The Holy Spirit is truly testing us with fire, the truth to be dug deeper and presented pure in the most vulnerable ways.
Lastly Bishop, I find it a little bit ironic that right now, faith in God and also Christian values are all open for scrutiny and debates, it is made acceptable for people to disrespect religions, especially Christianity and God; but now, we cannot say anything or debate against the new ideologies on gender, sexuality, and marriage. In evangelizing the culture, is it not our duty to put God back into His rightful place of highest respect and reverence in the societies?
    Thank you Bishop Barron.
Some people cannot understand science very much, before my reversion to the Church I tried to make people doubt their belief in God citing evolution, bla bla bla about the universe, and "inconsistencies" in the Bible, it didn't work; but maybe because I am bad at converting people.
Thanks be to God I am now back to the Church, stronger than ever. Glory be to our Lord and God forever. Amen.

A humble suggestion for lay people that might combine prayer and learning is to spend 15-20 minutes daily in contemplation of scripture. Take the daily readings or go through a book of the new testament and just focus on a line at a time, maybe a chapter a week with obedience and self examination. If you are a bit fidgety, like me, it helps me focus by having the reading to pray on.

Evangelization is very good, but they must teach the truth of the Catholic faith as they evangelize. Knowing the doctrine, without ambiguity is important in evangelization and Catechesis. Thank you Bishop Barron, the excellent communicator.

Knowing and following doctrine is NOT faith, and is not equal to conversion. I know the rules for golf, can get to the golf course, can carry the clubs. But unless I actually hit the ball off of the tee, I am not a golfer. Unless I actually have a living relationship to a LIVING GOD, none of that makes any difference. I am Catholic in name only. Evangelization is the joyful communication of the word of God - the saving power of Jesus' passion, death and resurrection available to ALL. Doctrine is an outgrowth of an ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ, a participation in His work on the cross. A nonbeliever cannot separate the two.

Wonderful - sent the link to fellow catechists. I would add, though, that the FIRST article of study MUST be the Gospel. I am over 30 years a catechist. Most Catholics - adult catechists included - believe they don't know the Bible (despite going to Mass and hearing it year over year). Even if it is simply a deep study of the four Gospels, it must be first. A certain confidence comes to the believer who wades in for themselves, and all of the "commentary" on it is still no substitute for reading the source material, no matter how profound, beautifully written or relevant.. A good Bible study, whether at the parish level or in one's home, is an absolutely essential beginning.

The talk with Alex o Connor was moving. It was a meeting between a brilliant estranged son and a true father. St Paul preached a crucified Christ with power. Today the church preaches a Christ who is one among many others and other things.

I totally agree with you on teaching the faith that the children are not being taught the right way. In our church the people who are teaching the faith are regular people who volunteer with no training and that is the type of people who taught my grandchildren who after college no longer feel it necessary to go to church. They say they are spiritual. We’ve had many talks together and they believe that Jesus died for us and rose but they don’t feel it necessary to go to church they are spiritual. I think that some pastors need to be more involved on who and what is being taught to these children. They just don’t take it seriously
Please pray for this generation of Catholic youth God Bless you

How are young people of Fatih supposed to meet other young people of faith? What does the church do to facilitate this? How can the church hope to grow if there is not a way for this to happen in a real and tangible way?
The church should also be about community; it needs to help young people to meet... and young families to meet... and old people to not be alone. The Catholic Church needs to do MORE to make this happen if it wants to exist into the next century. The mass, tho it has it's rightful place and purpose, is not enough to bring people together. It is the Word but not the actions.

Dumbing down the faith. So true! There is more emphasis on 'fellowship' than on 'worship' in most churches.
As somebody who is passionate about music I always have to think of the "praise bands" springing up everywhere. That's what young people want, I am told. It swings. It makes you feel good. It dumbs you down, in my opinion.
Where I grew up, we had church music composed by Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, not to mention Bach who dedicated his whole life for writing music for worshipping God (but mind you, he was a Protestant :-) That music puts you not just in a different mood, but in a different world. It sort of compels you to go deeper and search. You still find churches which cultivate good music, but in general it is 'dumbed down'.

In this TH-cam video, Bishop Robert Barron addresses the Catholic educators of the Archdiocese of Vancouver on the topic of evangelization. He discusses the importance of prioritizing evangelization above all else and emphasizes the need to proclaim the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Bishop Barron also talks about the lordship of Jesus and the need to have a personal relationship with Him. He criticizes the dumbing down of the faith and encourages educators to study and pray in order to have a strong and compelling understanding of the Catholic faith. Additionally, he emphasizes the use of social media as a tool for evangelization. Overall, Bishop Barron highlights the importance of being passionate, knowledgeable, and prayerful in the mission of evangelization.

What a coincidence! I just made this very point last night. (Although my audience was *,* as my point was 1 of 4,200 on the _Breaking in the Habit_ channel.)
All the End-Times-Are-Upon-Us advocates, and the "Church needs to return to Pre-Vat-II" proponents, and the "Last Good Pope was St Fillintheblank" pronouncers: all these need to get their chains jerked (in a loving way (WWJD?)) and be given the suggestion that their energies would better be redirected from their lamentations and into some contribution to their role in our Great Commission.
    That's my 2¢.

The young atheist Alex you talk about, took the easy way out. So much easier to deny a supreme being or excuse themselves by saying no one answered my questions than to try to find the answers themselves, by reading and studying. If he is so very bright this is what he should have done, hopeful the same brightness that led him out of the faith will lead him back to it.

"Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses." -St. Paul VI, Evangelii Nuntiandi.
It isn't clinging to structures of social power and honor that builds up the Church. Nor is it despair, outrage, or spectacle contra mundum. It is witness, it's integrity, and trust that God is Savior, and not ourselves. Preaching God's truth first requires witness to it.

May I also add another rule of evangelism? Don’t replace the liturgical beauty with modern/non-liturgical songs and entertainment. Keep the tradition, and be serious. Don’t try to sell the product you have with something cheaper and superficial. Just as we shouldn’t dumb down our faith, don’t change or compromise the beauty of our liturgical traditions either.

Bishop Barron, are you saying that I have to stay in school, learn how to build buildings and THEN I can go back to the original plan to teach again? Because the current disaffiliated are the people who I am working with? I get spit on, beat up, I have to pick up garbage, clean a lot, and I don't ask for any thing in return. Most of the people who work shoulder to shoulder with me aren't even Catholic, therefore I don't get to attend Mass quite frequently, and I get attacked for my Faith. This is not easy. I'm grateful for the little things, like online education and online Mass. Even moreover, I am grateful for when I get to go to Mass in person and experience Him, for myself. And I used to Serve the Mass through being a church Musician and reader. When will things be "normal" again?

_Gospel_ is a horrible translation for _Ευαγγέλιον,_ as Gospel is an Anglo-Saxon word. In modern English, the word _Gospel_ exists only as a proper noun.
There is *no modern English equivalent* for the Greek _Ευαγγέλιον._
I was explaining this to a Turkish friend. Apparently Turkish does have an equivalent word.
This absence gives us challenges, since _evangelize_ *is* a word in modern English. Fundamentalist Christians of the 2nd half 20th century gave the rest of us tiresome examples of it, both good, and not so good.

You've hit the nail right on the head. There is a glaring inconsistency between pre- and post-conciliar (Vatican II) thinking.
The one which follows closest to the perennial teaching of the Church and to Scripture is what has always been and will continue to be the Magisterium of the Church. Regardless of the "pastoral" approach the hierarchy prefer to take in the current era.
I will refer once again to John 14. More specifically to John 14:6. In the entire chapter Christ refers to Himself as the only way to the Father, hence the ONLY WAY TO SALVATION!
