You should really be looking at getting some back springs and getting that piece out from under the spring I'm sure it was put there to lift the ass end up do to soft springs but it's not the best way to do it and it will ride hard like a lumber wagon
@@79tazman The suspension is one of the issues we are going to focus on. We are going to put some performance springs and shocks on front and rear.
you should check out a guy named Patrick Glenn Nichols Muscle Car Barn finds that guy is the Chevelle guru he knows everything about Chevelles and goes all over to help people identify real SS Chevelles and to see if they are #'s matching and such here is his channel you and you father should check this guy out th-cam.com/channels/GcGpKrnEOr9sNpMBfqBu9A.html
@@4LaneBlacktop no way would i have that sitting outside. or any car with meaning. doesnt take much to build a lean to. 2 walls & roof, all you need. virmine, hot cold, moisture, destroys cars.
@@phantomwalker8251 I know I know one day it will be inside. Unfortunately I do not have the space or the resources for a shop at my place. Id love to be one of the YTers that have a big garage to put things in. Until then, if it ever happens, stuff will just have to stay outside. It really sucks.
Sold mine in 1984 up in Oakland Ca, bought it in Abilene Texas in 1979 with 109,000 original miles, I sure miss her ;-)
I have a 68 Chevelle SS from my high school days. I finally have time to restore it g
Garaged since 1982. I look forward to what you do!
My favorite year of Chevelle. Glad U were able to talk the old man into getting it running.
At one time I owned a 1968 Chevelle SS 396 without the original engine and a 283 in it's place. It was a four speed with a 12 bolt posi, it was a snap purchase when a 1967 Firebird bought as a parts car had that 6 cylinder overhead cam debacle in it. When I ran into a telephone pole with my 1968 Firebird was why I bought it. I used it for a trade in that I had to wait down the street to let it cool down before I could trade it. Needless to say I had to bite the bullet but the Chevelle turned into my hunting and fishing car that would go pretty much anywhere.I was later forced to sell it when I had three cars and move out of state along with my beloved Firebird. Still miss that one after 40 years.
I love these. Types of. Shows. Yeah, there only original 1. Time. Your efforts are. Highly respected ... e. Stolarz. Jr.
1969 was the year I graduated High School...this Chevelle would have been a dream! I was driving a 55' Chevy Bel Air Hardtop that I paid $400 for! Big money for a 16 year old kid! ...Newk from Kentucky
I’m certain your Dad is happy on many levels to have you on board with this project. Great call in the oil pressure issue. I’m looking forward to part two.
Happy with me but not happy with the car for the trouble it has.
Good job helping your dad get his car going! I have a chevelle I bought new 1971 i was 18. Need to restore it. Good video.
This is why I watch videos like this. I would never figured out that oil leak on my own. Now, I won't forget it.
First time Ive ever encountered it too. You have only seen part of it. Wait till the next video
I had the same car, numbers matching, 396/425hp car in high school 1982...bought ot off a car lot, royal blue/black vinyl top. Man, I wish I still had it !
You lucky bastard can’t believe you found this masterpiece you are one lucky lll tell you that
Great father son project
Sweet ride..... nothing like a big block 4 speed chevelle......
Awesome find
My dad had one of those when he married my mom, same colour too. He got rid of it after my brother was born in 1974. My mom wasn't interested in putting two toddlers in the back seat of a two door car. I don't think he ever forgave her for the pressure to get a sedan. I hope that you guys get it to mint condition.
Love the 69 Chevelle big blocks.
Can't wait to see part 2 of this car. I love it, great video.
Thanks for the vid! Enjoy your channel, like your work and projects. Nice car and she needs to be back on the road. Can't beat them old big blocks! Thanks for your time.
Your welcome. Glad you have enjoyed them.
The fact that the Chevelle was willing to wake up after 40 winks is a good start. I hope the oil pump issue is a minor stumbling block.
Well the oil pressure issue has not been fun. You will see in the next video.
oh man, there is some serious work to be done on that car!
Its not too bad actually for its age but it does need a restoration to be 100%.
love this channel, the laid back nature of you makes it even better..greeting from South London, england....
Thank you. Glad you are enjoying it.
Chevelles are my favourite Car from the 60s and 70s. Im from australia and thats why my favourite aussie car is a Premier HQ Holden
That's a sweet ride your old man was smart for keeping it all these years and the good thing about it it there are lots of parts kicking around for those cars and body and interior reproduction pieces for the things you don't find original.
I wouldnt let him sell it. I have seen people trying to buy it since I was old enough to have a memory.
Really neat car and a cool story. I hope that the oil pump work goes as hoped, because I want to see you guys cruising that beast.
Thank you. The oil pump definitely works, too good right now. We will get it worked out.
I drove corvettes but I did have a 66 chevelle that I really liked
Pretty sweet ride
Nice looking car. Thanks for sharing
If my memory serves me, that one with the 4spd came with a 350hp motor, and the one with the Aluminum Intake came with a 375hp ;-)
Greetings from the UK. U guys always seem to have such cool cars as opposed to ours. True we do have nice old cars but they are always so damned expensive lol. Anyway love the channel, keep up the good work and enjoy every minute with your parents. You never know when they will not be there.
Glad you are enjoying my channel. All the nice old cars here are very expensive just like they are there.
Yeah but they are so cool. And you have far more chance of a barn find due to space lol. But no man keep up the good work. There are so many channels of a similar nature but really prefer yours as you guys are so genuine.
Beautiful car, but those slots were pretty sweet!
Isn't the releif valve right below.the filter in that bolt on adapter if I.remember right anyways I think some have em there
Nice ride love it
Good morning 🙋🏼♂️
Nice car 👍🏻👍🏻
Love the video! One question...the tubes under the rear coil springs? I have a 69 Chevelle too and I have those on mine too. Are they aftermarket add ons?
Im pretty sure they are aftermarket. Back in the 70s the style was to jack up the rear. Someone added them on before 1973. They will come off at some point.
Thanks for responding so quickly! Mine will eventually come off too.
I love your videos.
Heck yah that thing needs to out on the road
Buckets with no console is rare. My dad had a 69 camaro ss like that when I was a kid in the early 90s. He had the build sheet so we knew it was factory
its called weight saving.. like dodge duster. basic mustang. built to race..
Looks like he is over torquing the wheel studs.
Nice one 👍🏼
Hard to believe you let that thing just sit around all those years I've had a couple of those big block early model Chevelles I think I fed close to 1567 to 72 Chevelles but anyway you guys should have got that thing up and going long time ago that's a beauty I never heard of a pressure relief valve on the oil pressure gauge never had the problem
Killer car. my first
This is a great video, a Chevelle is one of my dream cars. Now sorry to get off topic but what was your buddy in the background trying to start up?
Holy Crap ! 81&' ?? That's when I got my 69 SS 396or was it 81' ?? Mine wasn't Stock like this Baby !! Mine was SET UP FOR THE STRIP AND IT DID 12:20'S DOWN THE QUARTER MILE. I MADE IT STREET LEGAL IN AUTO SHOP ( CLASS OF 81' ). SO I CAN REALLY APPRECIATE YOU WAKING THAT BABY BACK UP FROM IT'S LITTLE NAP !!! LOLOL WHAT IS IT 325 or 350 hp I saw that it has 2-bolt mains but it is a stick so it's cool!!
You guys and your starting fluid, if you only knew the damage it does you wouldn't use it. The problem is it drives the cylinder pressure sky high. That psi has to go somewhere and that is breaking the ring lands on the pistons.
Starting fluid is a engine builders dream.
I just want to say that is one very desirable car especially with the 396 4 spd. Combination . If it has the 375 h.p. version it is a total screamer all 375 h.p. that I am aware of had the 4 spd. I had a dodge charger 68 and 69 with the 440 eng. and the 375 h.p. 396 could stay with me if driven right. The 375 hp 396 was rated at 425 hp in 1965 no changes were made to lower hp but ralph nader complained so much about certain high performace cars that manufacturers had to lower hp ratings so people could get decent insurance prices.nader also ruined Corvairs reputation (corvair corsas are fantastic cars especially with a v8 midship). My friend had a 1967 chevelle ss 396 ci 375/425 horse motor 4spd. 3.73 positracion car. Propably the fastest factory car that I have ever ridden in but it it had little 14 inch redline tires so i can't say for sure. The hi po motor has a holley 780 carb.. rectangular port heads and a solid lifter cam it was the engine that replaced the 425 h.p. 409 in 1965. Thanks for listening. Will
Cool project!!!!Please never use tarps to cover your cars. That is the worst thing for them, since they don't breath it traps moisture causing rust which I already seen on the car.Good luck on it!
Looks like it needs new springs in the back they got a piece of aluminum in there to in order to lift the back end up
Yeah someone jack the suspension up. My dad bought it like that. We are going to put in all new performance springs in the future.
Wow wow and wow good for you first off for helping out your dad second off your dad's a smart man man or hanging on to that car only a dream to own 396 4-speed father and son I had a 69 Beaumont 2 door hardtop for 20 years I was supposed to give it to my son and I sold it two years ago like a dummy am I ever kicking myself in the ass and so did he don't kid yourself anyway great video
Great video
Thank you
Why was the chevelle parked back in 1981to begin with buddy?? Great video tho and I can’t wait to follow this project. Car seems to be pretty darn solid for being 50 years old!
My dad told me it mostly had to do with it getting poor fuel mileage and getting another car. Nothing was really wrong with it.
I got a 72’ El Camino.
My bae❤️
Pays for it’s own upgrades.
Best balanced muscle car of ALL TIME.
-Longer wheel base/STATION WAGON LENGTH
Keeps’er from “MUSTANG’IN”🇺🇸
(Get’n outta shape)
I wouldn’t feel SAFE,
racing a Chevelle coupe
vs.
LONG WHEEL BASE ELCO/COCKPIT/2-seat
(Reason top-fuel dragsters/so LONG💡)
&
50,000 built
vs
350,000 Chevelle Sport coupes.
👉🏽Do the MATH.
RARE/INNOVATIVE/UTILITY💴
=
BEST CHEVELLE EVER❤️😮
Whats with the piece a pipe under the rear coils...........
Its some kind of rear lift kit someone put on before my dad bought the car. It is coming off at some point.
Some of those filters are full flow others are not are you sure you are fitting the correct one it’s not just the thread size and or seal diameter that need to be checked.
Yes it is the correct oil filter. Pressure relief valve is stuck.
Why did you have to talk him into it? What was stopping him
He just kept putting it off. He was doing other things, I was busy with all my projects, and work. I finally got him motivated so I dropped everything I was doing to get this thing going.
Don't look bad looks solid 20 grand an its knew again
Great camara work n b waiting on next video!
Thank you
You need to add zinc to the oil ! The camshaft will go flat if you don't.
Candy Apple Red ? LOLOLOLHAHA That's a Hoot !! Candy Apple Crud ! LOLOLOLHAHA Hey ! I kid ! I kid ! I love the Darned Thing !
If that's original paint, & it looks to be, that's not candy apple red, it's Matador Red.
Sounds like lobes are.wiped.off cam how its backfiring like that. I.bet under load.like goimg uphill it really does it bad
The carb needed rebuild. It runs just fine.
Please turn down the music, or lose it altogether. Or was this a music video?
You may wonder how a 440 with 350 to 375 h.p. could be a close race with a 425 hp. Chevy motor .the 440 has more torque . And mopar had a better rear suspension ( leaf springs) that were almost like traction bars on the 440/ hemi cars.
That car needs a frame off. Not to be fixed in a dirt driveway on cinderblocks. "Look how cockeyed he works .... brand new windshield wipers with a busted windshield ".... Darnell
It will get a frame off restoration at some point. The goal was to get it driving again and we accomplished that.
Omg have you ever worked on a classic car??? Use a gas rag or he’ll even dump gas in the carb but starting fluid is bad ! Almost as bad as you racing the motor of a car that has not ran or had an oil change since 1988. Just say
But your content is great
Spending time with pops is worth more then even that awesome car.
We were dumping gas and using starting fluid. The engine has been ran over the years. It has been started up once every couple of months at least for the past 12 years.
The 96 revved way better than the 27 and 54 was a slug
Sounds like you have a vacuum leak
325 or 350 h.p. my guess 325
Its a 325hp car
I'll take that Dang Rat Chevelle LOLOLOLHAHA
I think the oil pump is bad
For yrs. " Dad let drive chevelle. " "nope" my friends. " you should sell it" "nope" my lovely wife " the oldest daughter came home in that car " ( she went into labor while we were street racing lol) now! Both our 67 chevelle ( the one the kid came home in ) with 427. 70 ls6 square port heads 11-1 trw pistons. 12 bolt 411 turbo 400. Malibu. And the 70 ss she wanted after kid # 2. And friend blew up 396. We put lil 307 in it she drove it daily to work and pick up kids lol park it in 87 she wanted a montecarlo ss. Yep she spoiled. Lol. Now girls are grown. Us and gbabies are bringing them back out. Lol. Should have done it while dad still here. Enjoy it.
Carb
If I was you I’d just go ahead and pull the engine and freshen it up, new gaskets rings bearings new oil pump etc, and I’d rebuild that Q-jet Or replace it,
I don’t understand why your dad would let that treasure sit and rot for four decades. I am a car guy. I own a 73 Buick Electra 225, a ‘98 Trans Am, a 2010 FJ Cruiser and a 2018 Nissan 370 Z Nismo. All in perfect condition. I can’t have it any other way. They mean so much to me. They are all showroom shape. Kick your dad on his back side and get that car in shape sir. From Connecticut, Big Al.
🤦♂️
So far only boo boo is there not cragar ss wheels trust me they make the difference
Dam, you should not do music with your videos, it went negative and sad. Just do regular content.
