These blokes could make a traditional song sound like they wrote it, or write an original that seemed like it had been around for centuries. Hands down one of the very best bands ever
Haha yeah, at first I thought "Streams of Whiskey" and "Boys from the County Hell" were traditional songs. The Pogues were great interpreters of other peoples songs too. Just a great band all around.
These guys play their hearts out for their heritage and i love it. Reminds me of the old Mexican folk songs i grow up with. Cheers to you all who follow this music from MEXICO!! (salute)
Shane sings 503 words in this song in 2 miutes 13 seconds (lyrics start at 1:00 in the song). 226 words per minute, 3.77 words per second. All from a man who abused his body beyond the comprehension of most human beings, basically he shouldn't be alive today. Simply amazing.
Lyrics: Twas in the merry month of June from me home I started Left the girls of Tuam nearly broken hearted Saluted father dear, kissed me darling mother Drank a pint of beer, me grief and tears to smother Then off to reap the corn, leave where I was born Cut the stout black thorn to be on the shores to Dublin Brand new pair of brogues rattlin' o'er the bogs Fightin' all the dogs on the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the way to Dublin, whack follol de rah! From there I got away, me spirits never failing Landed on the quay, just as the ship was sailing The Captain at me roared that no more room had he When I jumped aboard, a cabin found for Paddy Down among the pigs, played some hearty rigs Danced some hearty jigs, the water round me bubblin' When off Holyhead wished that I was dead Or better for instead on the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road And all the way to Dublin, whack follol de rah! The boys of Liverpool, when we safely landed Called meself a fool, I could no longer stand it Blood began to boil, temper I was losing Poor old Erin's Isle they began abusing "Hurrah me soul" says I, me Shillelagh I let fly Galway boys were nigh and saw I was a hobblin' With a loud "hurray!" joined in the affray Quietly cleared the way for the rocky road to Dublin One, two, three four, five Hunt the hare and turn her down The rocky road and all the way to Dublin Whack follol de rah!
I sing this in more or less the same tempo as here, in our band. I can only do three verses, however, and I'm choking. It's an insane song. Shane is a giant!
All Celts round the world should unite to form one sovereign Celtic Nation! Born in the U.S. but very very proud of my Irish heritage. My great grandmother came here from Tipperary. If it weren't for Irish immigrants this country wouldn't be anything. Thank God for his blessings on us and may we find solidarity and pride for our heritage once again. Erin Go Bragh
First time i heard the Pogues i loved them. First time, they played in Paris about 40 years ago, it was in a small venue, everyone was dancing madly, it was so much fun. The thing is i was dancing so much , i didn't have time to really watch the band playing!
kha sab I meant that I play this on the double bass, so I'm playing *boom chicka boom* while other instruments play yhe chords, making my timing more difficult.
Calvin Maynard It's easy enough to count it in triple meter. The problem is that it's a 4+3 right before each chorus, which is what's throwing you off. "On the Rocky Road to Dublin" + "One-two three-four five"
I tell you The Pogues are the most underrated band in the Goddamn world. No one will ever be able to sing this fast, 503 words in 2:13 is damn near impossible. An incredible singer and a musical genius. Sláinte is táinte, Shane. Erin go bragh.
I can sing faster but that doesn't mean that Shane doesn't outdo me in many other musical fields. He's the man for sure but I had to challenge your opinion b/c I can do it with ease.
*salutes* your comment made my day. I had an Irish teacher in highschool back at home (Middle East), he was the best teacher I've ever had, and he was only half Irish! I wonder what a "whole" Irish would be like then XD
I LOVE this song! But it is, without doubt, the most difficult Irish song (in Anglo-Irish) to sing. I have the lyrics, but Shane sings it so feckin fast, i can't even get me mouth round the words to keep up! Shane, you're the best. Mad in love withyou I am.
Ça fait tellement longtemps, tellement longtemps que j'ai pas dansé sur cette toune-là! Irish people, you made me dance all night long with this song!!! Vive l'Irlande! Vive le Québec!
The lyrics and rhythm are incredible - "Brand new pair of brogues, rattlin' o'er the bogs, frightenin' all the dogs on the rocky road to Dub-a-lin.....
This whole west coast part of the tour was almost legendary for Shanes spot on performances with emcores and he was clear and happy and so was the band. Some turbulence in the east coast showss and of that year. Again the west coast duration they all were in top form
I love this band! Iam a swede, with a very "irish-looking"-face, and everytime iam listening to these irish songs, it gives me chills and i just wished i was someone iam not. I know its pathetic, but its the truth.

Punk-folk at it's finest. Without this lot, we wouldn't have had The men they couldn't hang, Rumjacks, levellers, Flogging Molly et. al. Mr Macgowan basically invented a genre

Shane is intelligent and engaging even when drunker than most of us could ever get; have a look at some of his interviews. He also took playing the beer tray to a new level.
As much as I love Shane to death, Kelly gets this one. And I know we shouldn't be flaffing and flaying when we have such brilliance. I'm ver proud of all versions

Typical, cultural appropriation.

503 words, that's insane, including the ones he almost misses because he's gasping for air
he's Irish, they can do that....
Shane, my love...Now you get the rocky road to heaven....Greeting and love for all there...❤❤❤❤❤

Lyrics:
Twas in the merry month of June from me home I started
Left the girls of Tuam nearly broken hearted
Saluted father dear, kissed me darling mother
Drank a pint of beer, me grief and tears to smother
Then off to reap the corn, leave where I was born
Cut the stout black thorn to be on the shores to Dublin
Brand new pair of brogues rattlin' o'er the bogs
Fightin' all the dogs on the rocky road to Dublin
One, two, three four, five

At me curious style, 'twould set your heart a bubblin'
Asked me was I hired, wages I required
Till I was sick and tired of the rocky road to Dublin
One, two, three four, five
Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, whack follol de rah!
In Dublin next arrived I thought it such a pity
To be so soon deprived a view of that fine city
When I took a stroll all among the quality
Me bundle it was stole in the neat locality
Something crossed me mind when I looked behind
No bundle could I find upon me stick a wobblin'
Asking for the rogue, they called me Connaught brogue
Wasn't much in vogue on the rocky road to Dublin

Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, whack follol de rah!
From there I got away, me spirits never failing
Landed on the quay, just as the ship was sailing
The Captain at me roared that no more room had he
When I jumped aboard, a cabin found for Paddy
Down among the pigs, played some hearty rigs
Danced some hearty jigs, the water round me bubblin'
When off Holyhead wished that I was dead
Or better for instead on the rocky road to Dublin
One, two, three four, five
Hunt the hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, whack follol de rah!
The boys of Liverpool, when we safely landed
Called meself a fool, I could no longer stand it
Blood began to boil, temper I was losing
Poor old Erin's Isle they began abusing
"Hurrah me soul" says I, me Shillelagh I let fly
Galway boys were nigh and saw I was a hobblin'
With a loud "hurray!" joined in the affray
Quietly cleared the way for the rocky road to Dublin
One, two, three four, five
Hunt the hare and turn her down
The rocky road and all the way to Dublin
Whack follol de rah!
