Came here after learning about Shane has left the stage, today. RIP, mate. Thanks for all the joy your music provided to me over the last decades, over and over again. And what a great summary about him in the video.
I had the privilege of seeing Shane and the Pogues twice. Once Shane forgot the words to a song. It didn't matter because we were all singing the lyrics and Shane remembered. 2 best concerts ever
I seen them three times but it was a different singer every time; once with Shane (couldn't understand a word so it was awesome), once with Joe Strummer, and once with Spider.

@@HardSmartfuxu in my city there's a man who had a bad accident when he was younger which resulted in him only being able to say "yow, good, cool" i've know him like that for years and was shocked when i heard him sing along to some song at one point really fascinating
What a lad. Even though they're considered as just a band when that one talk show host goes to end, "Say their names now." It shows he really cares that those performers get proper recognition for their work. 👏
Rest in peace you warrior-poet. From the dark streets of London to the dirty old town to the fairytale of New York, you'll always be with us, deep in our hearts.
The best Shane McGowan quote "I've never taken drugs in my life"...... later on in the conversation...... "So I was down at Alphabet City trying to score myself a speedball (heroin and cocaine combined)"........... "but you said that you'd never taken drugs in your life?"............. "Yeah but I never swore on my Mother's grave!"
Y'know, since I've listened to the Pogues basically my whole life, I was never sure if it was offensive to say that the singer has a certain way of singing that was like a drunken Irish man... But it turns out, I was right. He was frequently plastered while performing and also while not. Just a true Irish lad living his life. Damn shame that he's not doing so well.
Listening to them your whole life and never knew he was a drinker? And offensive to who? Bit offensive to think anyone can sing like him though. And he wasn’t just a typical Irish lad living his life you racist he is an alcoholic and you saying that’s typical of an Irish lad is pretty racist! You should be banned from this platform!
many times sung badly but greatly downstairs bar, market bar, inverness, bless ya jimmy ginger keep the dylan and pogues on that jukebox in my dirty old town, great memories
In 1998 I went from Greece to Limerick in Ireland as part of a student exchange program to study for a year, and study I did not. But I did listen to the Pogues, and I drank with the Irish, and when I hear that voice I will always remember. Best time of my life.
Years and years ago, I remember reading an article/interview in FHM about Shane MacGowan. Some of the points I remember are: He grew up on a farm in Tipperary with his grandparents, and his grandad used to give him a little alcohol each night. The grandad died by falling in to a threshing machine. When about 5 years old, he remembers first being drunk when he spoke to the geese...and they spoke back. On one occasion (whilst drunk and on speed) he painted himself head to foot in blue paint...because the Moaris told him to. He liked macaroni cheese, because it could be eaten cold straight from the tin Oh, and when eating bread it had to be brown, as it's good for you. Class
As a maple-blooded Canadian the most unsettling part of that wild life is the idea of mac & cheese being served in any kind of tin, with any opportunity to get cold. Have the Irish never heard of Kraft Dinner?
@@emilianozamora399 our macaroni and cheese comes in a box and you have to cook and mix it yourself, not like in the UK and Ireland where it comes in a can.
I have to say thank you because today is the first time I ever heard the song fairytale of New York. The lyrics describe my relationship to my ex-wife, and I say that even though I don't drink. We've been divorced now for several years, yet the song left me in tears. So thank you for that..
What a legend and thank you for doing him justice, you are an amazing dude for this video, thank you. To the seven wonderful people who liked this comment, thank you from the bottom of my heart
Met Shane twice in the 90s and had my picture taken with him by Victoria. He remembered me a few nights later at a concert. I love you Shane! So glad you finally married her!
Let's give some love to Kirsty MacColl, who also made "Fairytale Of New York' so great. She was (is) one of my favourite singers and KITE is a severely underrated album. Her early death was both bizarre and tragic - and probably warrants a Qxir story all by itself. I remember hearing about her death on a local alternative radio station in Sydney and the DJ seemed almost on the verge of tears (I was, too, come to think of it). Not long afterwards, I saw Billy Bragg live in concert and he dedicated "A New England" to Kirsty.
I'm still angry that the boater who ran her over is still running free. I was already a bit of a fan of hers by the time I learned that she was on Fairytale of New York. That made the song just that much better, to me.
I think Shane truly loved Kristy MacColl, when she died he dove head first into the bottle and any drugs he could get a hold of, now he is literally disabled, but has a new set of teeth lol
Thank you. I'm American and we've been known to get it in, myself included, but I've loved the Pogues for a long time now. McGowan is a a force to be reckoned with and good on him.
Thank You for this. As child of the 80's and born & raised in NYC, I remember The Pogues Poetry rather well and Shane MacGowan. The "Fairy Tale of New York" is probably the best Christmas song ever penned. But the Pogues were the MOST unique and successful folk-punk band to pull this off. No easy feat but when you're that talented ... these stories about and with Shane MacGowan are absolutely hilarious. Cheers from NYC!!!
Just stumbled across this video and brought back a lot of happy memories - fell in love with the pogues as a 16 year old about 87 and followed them all over - when they reformed managed to get to dozens of gigs again - one of the greatest songwriters to have walked the earth in my opinion. Thanks for the video
Kept this video saved after all these years. Love you Shane, and relate to your more than I'd like. RIP to one of the best songwriters of all time. Pogue Mahone!
Born 10 years after me in the same hospital, a good Kentish Irishman as I’m a Kentish Irishwoman,… God rest his soul, no one can replace him, his poetry, his music, his character… RIP..
I consider myself very fortunate to have seen them twice, and was absolutely gutted to hear of his passing. The first time in Manchester in 2004, when after opening woth Streams of Whiskey, and the crowd going wild, he uttered words that will stay with me forever... "Its good to be back Liverpool"
You’re my favorite youtuber because you put so much effort into putting out content that’s personal and important to YOU. Thanks for sharing and empowering your artistic vision through your channel. Cheers mate.
ive seen it many times. From my father and including myself. Ya do a horrible thing and think a nice thing, thinking later on will band-aid the wrong you did. An ass is still an ass even if its well spoken. mercy and kindness, that spoke to me in that segment. yet the tiger dident change his stripes.
Genius lyricist and performer. Love the early Clash video with him dancing in the crowd. Thousands are sailing is one of my all time favourite songs. Just wish my Grandfather had sailed West instead of East. Best wishes from the UK.
15 years ago i was sailing a vessel from the Azores to Nprway alone. Because of weather i sailed to Sherkin island to waith for better winds. I ended up in a stag parthy. Bunch of people from some sailboats. It turned out to be some of the best Irish folk musicians incl 3 member of the Pogues. I never forget that night. I sailed oround the world for 6 years. My best memories are from Ireland, the Irish people!
I've got to say thank you for this video. Started listening to Shane and The Pouges when they first came out in early 80's. I've been a fan and follower of his ever since. We've all got our screwed up habits or issues, but Shane is a magnificent artist. From Fairytale of New York to he and Sinéad O'Connor with Haunted by the Ghost. Then the the stories of Ireland that only he could put to music. He's a legend and am always looking for anything he's put on paper. Thank you again for a tribute to this man.
Hey, just wanted to say thank you for helping me out with a school project. I didn't have any idea for a topic until I saw your video on that plane crash EDIT: for those who want to know, it was the video about the tenerife airplane crash a few weeks back. I had to find 3 moments in the history of flight and make a PowerPoint on them, didn't matter how small or big, so I used Apollo 11, The first manned Hot Air Balloon, and when I was trying to come up with a third I just happened to be watching Qxir and TH-cam autoplayed me into that video
I've seen the Pogues live twice and the song for the first dance when I got married in December was Fairytale of Newyork. Shane was absolutely shit faced both times on stage but he could still perform. It was standing which he struggled with. I absolutely love the Pogues and Shane. He's lived his life and burnt the candle at both ends but I bet he regrets nothing.
Man, what a ride it is watching your videos, loved every second! P. S. Ireland was the only country to help Mexico in the American war with St. Patrick's Batallion, so you've got friends here forever.
Those weren't Irishmen. St. Patrick's Battalion was made up of defectors and deserters from the US Army. St. Patrick's Battalion also never fought in the Mexican War of Independence, they fought in the Mexican-American War that lasted from 1846-1848. The Mexican War of Independence ended in 1821.
@@SkunkApe407 You're correct about the date, it was the Mexican American War not the independence War. However, the unit was made up primarily of European expats, Irishmen in particular, to such an extent that the people of several towns in Mexico have physical characteristics inherited from those that stayed.
@@0GRAII The Saint Patrick's Battalion (Spanish: Batallón de San Patricio, later reorganized as the Foreign Legion of Patricios) was a unit of 175 to several hundred (accounts vary) immigrants and expatriates of European descent who fought as part of the Mexican Army against the United States in the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. Formed and led by John Riley, the battalion's members included many who had deserted or defected from the United States Army. The battalion served as an artillery unit for much of the war. Despite later being formally designated as two infantry companies, it still retained artillery pieces throughout the conflict.
@@0GRAII I'm of European descent, but that doesn't make me European. My ancestors are descendant of Clan Cullinane, and hailed from County Cork. That doesn't make me Irish though. I was born in the Americas,, which makes me an American. Same goes for most every member of St. Patrick's Battalion. The Battalion's leader was Irish born, but he was a traitor to the British Crown and defected to the US. He then subsequently joined and deserted the US Army. He only defected to Mexico following a Court Martial that saw him branded as a traitor. His only allegiance to Mexico was his grudge against the US. He wasn't a hero, just a mercenary without morals or conviction.
I found it wholesome that he wanted the host to name all the members of the band behind them. Like the host kinda shrugs it off, saying he'd do it over the break, but Shane sounded like he genuinly wanted them to get that recognition on TV
What a guy. One of my mates met him on a ferry a few years ago and they sat down and had a couple of drinks and a game of poker together. My mate says Shane was one of the most down to earth, lovable and friendly people he's ever met.
Thanks a lot :-) Iv seen the Pouges several times live and they where absolutely one of the best live bands iv ever heard. I even met Mr. MacGowan as a photographer for TV, we cold hardly get one serious question answered ... he was very drunk, all over the place and VERY funny. Love your stuff .. greetings from Copenhagen :-).
I love Shane....hate his alcoholism. I am Canadian and was in a punk band in the late 80's/ early 90's and I would sing "Haul away Joe". It was always an audience favorite but it helped us because it gave our guitarists enough time to change a broken string!
Poor blessed man. What a sadness that we could all see his tenderness and everyone’s instincts were to protect him from his destruction, alas. His presence and energy was so marvellous and so big that it withstood this incredible buffeting nonetheless. A sweet and charming and deeply talented spirit. Rest in your newfound peace Shawn. Everyone is singing your songs this Christmas. x
Nice one Qxir. Perfect accompaniment on a Friday eve with 6 pack of DG. Interviews with insufferable Pat and intolerable Tubridy are hilarious. Keep up the Irish cultural vids! PS: Shane's a gift to the world. As are The Pogues.
My favourite part of that statment was the irony it come from a man that could hardly stand. To be fair he probably had drunk enough to slay a lesser man.
Shane’s an intelligent man and loves music. I met him twice a few years apart and he remembered our previous conversation. He was a mess both times, as was I back then...
I had the greatest pleasure of seeing The Pogues a few times - absolutely nucking futs RIP Shane ( Thanks for this upload - that last story was nice to hear )
Reading the Dutch subtitles, the English subtitles and being able to understand the drunken rambling makes those segments much better. Being Dutch half-Irish does have it's perks.
What is with the hate on Jon Bon Jovi? He was cheesy as hell, but was never offensive in my opinion. In fact, his re-writing those lyrics was him going over the top to try his hardest to not be offensive LOL.
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 i don't know who bon jovi is, but from what i heard in the video, him doing that to 'not be offensive' sounds kinda lame. the original comment never said he was offensive. it said that anyone could outclass him.
Wow...thanks so much for doing this I've been a huge fan since 1986 and was lucky enough to have seen them in concert....man brings back memories and Shane's a genius!
Shane was a wily and unhinged poet, and he truly did the BEST Shane McGowan impersonation. Joe Strummer did a decent one, as well. I've always wondered where Dropkick Murphy's from the U.S. stand in the Irish music scene. Sincere thanks from this old Gen X-er who stayed awake for the whole thing! Congratuwelldone!
We've all heard of them..but when we hear (or at least me because I was raised on The Pogues) when we hear bands that are really influenced by The Pogues we just end up putting the real thing on!! 'Shipping out to Boston' is one hell of a tune too.😊
@@brazenlilhussy5975 Agreed. Well, Strummer did replace Shane for a bit (and his band came earlier), but I know what you mean. Curious to know if you rejected or enjoyed J.S. singing for that time.
@@genghis_connie Always loved Strummer (and The Clash) you could tell he really looked up to Shane. I'm sure you know this but before he stood in for him 4 a bit Joe just used to follow the lads around lugging gear and hanging out backstage! Like Joe said many times The Pogues reaffirmed his belief in 'real' music being able to get to the masses, Strummer always had his finger on the pulse right up to the time he passed, the fact that some punk fans disliked The Clash because they dared to show a bit of their musicality was really dumb imo also. I followed all The Clash members and Mick Jones ended up producing one of my favourite bands of the last 20 years (The Libertines I know they didn't get much of a run in the states so if you havnt heard them they're well worth a listen maybe 'what a waster' to start off with) I'd love to hear your thoughts on them. They're probably the last band that made music with lotsa feeling in it (Peter Doherty went on to front Babyshambles after another great band with punk just running through their veins) imo he's one of the best lyricists of the last 30 years, and to just bring it back full circle Pete and Shane have always got on well and played together loads. Sorry for waffling..lol..😊
@@brazenlilhussy5975 No apologies! That's a stream of consciousness I'm all in on. I think Strummer actually talked about being sort of a fanboy,, comrade and peer of The Pogues - but I had no idea he was hauling gear. My hard-working, half Romanian side gives Joe big ups for his hard-working half Romanian side! He let go of some if his ego in his later years. Joe and The Mescaleros made some gold. 'Ramshackle Day Parade is f-ing gutting and gorgeous. Agree to all on The Clash. One of my faves is Guns of Brixton, so it's not all Mick and Joe. Such a talent pool. I do have the early 2000's self-titled album by The Liberines. I remember liking it, then moving, then switching to iPods a d forgetting about them. I'll revisit.
@@brazenlilhussy5975 Oh! And Babyshambles. Thanks for the reminder. I know I've heard something, but no recollection. Having only been to Engkand and Scitland in many tries between 2003 and 2009 (mostly on business), I was so bummed to nit have time to see local music or trace the steps of some favorite bands. I was still a musician then, wishing I could just stand in the studios where music was made. Have you ever heard 7 Secinds or Naked Raygun?
I'm really glad you did this episode. I'd never heard of this guy before. Now I'm learning all I can... Debauched geniuses are awesome! Your channel's pretty cool all around.
I had never heard of the Pogues before you posted this video, but I don't think I have went more than a few week period without listening to them since this was uploaded. Thanks for giving this McDonald's brain a touch of culture.
It's remarkable that he's lived this long with a hard-core alcohol addiction. Most of them die in their 40s and 50s from cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer or heart disease or pancreatitis and diabetes. Must've been tough on those closest to him all these years.
The Pogues’ music (I’ve definitely heard of the band name before, but never heard their music until now) reminds me of the band named “Flogging Molly“ which was absolutely _HUGE_ in the underground indie scene here in the USA. I don’t know if they were actually Irish or not, and I’m too lazy to look it up right now because I have had some beers myself LOL. I do know that I had an absolute blast at their shows, swinging my beer mug around with the rest of the crowd in the early 2000s. Cheers! 🍻
If you've never heard of Dave King before, check out the stuff he did with Fastaway in the 80's. They did a movie soundtrack for Trick or Treat that they released as an album, and it was great. The movie was a decent horror for the time too. Anyway, I "found" Flogging Molly and enjoyed them, but it was months before I realised I was listening to the same dude.
@@trelard Yes, he was a hair metal guy before Flogging Molly. I think FM were great live, but they just dont sound authentic on the albums Ive heard. Like they are reaching too hard. Definately and obviously Pogues inspired.
@@maly1c That is correct, you could go as far as saying that The Pogues are the origin of Irish Punk. As far as combining traditional Irish music and punk, nobody has done it better.
Great tribute! I h ave sadly only ever seen him with the Pogues live once, I remember he had a massive glass thing the size of a bucket filled with a clear liquid, no idea if it was water or what it was, and he didn't perform on all the songs but when he did the audience gave a huge roar every time.
My favorite thing ever was Shane and the pougues playing with the dubliners. The combined blood alcohol content on stage could have blown a breathalyzer to bits.
@@captainhindsight8779 Shane was born in the County of Kent, ENGLAND to Irish Parents. He was also filmed at early Punk gigs wearing a Union Flag jacket. Confusing eh?
@@emlix1 Can attest. Saw the Pogues in Boston in '88. The band came out, ripped in to the first piece, no Shane. Second go round with the intro, out comes Shane, green bottle of Tanqueray's in hand. I love this entire video but the very best part is Kieffer Sutherland's story at the end ~ so incredibly touching. For anyone with knowledge of astrology, Shane is a Capricorn, which goes a long way to explain his particular brand of warm, touching, extremely human lyrics, and also the extremely touching end to Kieffer Sutherland's story. A Capricorn will always repay a kindness with a warm~hearted thankyou letter, a perfectly cleaned room, and neatly folded blankets! :) Thank you so much for this great video!

Years and years ago, I remember reading an article/interview in FHM about Shane MacGowan. Some of the points I remember are:
He grew up on a farm in Tipperary with his grandparents, and his grandad used to give him a little alcohol each night. The grandad died by falling in to a threshing machine.
When about 5 years old, he remembers first being drunk when he spoke to the geese...and they spoke back.
On one occasion (whilst drunk and on speed) he painted himself head to foot in blue paint...because the Moaris told him to.
He liked macaroni cheese, because it could be eaten cold straight from the tin
Oh, and when eating bread it had to be brown, as it's good for you.
Class
As a maple-blooded Canadian the most unsettling part of that wild life is the idea of mac & cheese being served in any kind of tin, with any opportunity to get cold. Have the Irish never heard of Kraft Dinner?

I LOVE Pogues, and I think Shane McGowan is one of the greatest songwriters ever. Huge love from the US! Love your channel!
I too remember hearing she'd been hit by a jetski in Mexico, it was a tragic event, she met Elvis down the chippy

@@genghis_connie Always loved Strummer (and The Clash) you could tell he really looked up to Shane. I'm sure you know this but before he stood in for him 4 a bit Joe just used to follow the lads around lugging gear and hanging out backstage!
