A truly amazing band of incredibly talented musicians, and with the writings and vocals of Shane, took Irish music to the masses. So sad to see the news of Shane's death. Thanks for the ride mate. RIP
Truly, truly, truly sad news. I didn't know Him till 2 weeks ago. But I listened to a Pogues' audiocassette of mine several years ago. Now I, Italian, watch and listen to Shane MacGowan every day. I am '75, forever fond of Him, glory of Ireland. ❤
Sounds amazing. The closest comparable memory i have like that is goin to family values tour right after cash died. It was a rough concert. A guy died. But before the first band came on the pa played walk the line and everyone in the arena stopped what they were doing and sang along. It was so organic and beautiful. I had tears in my eyes. My only truly amazing concert experiance
hardly a waste of talent. Shane did everything he wanted to do, he just did it in a remarkably short period of time. He's got a back catalogue to die for, some of the most beautiful songs ever written, they'll be sung and played for centuries to come.
Fond memories of The Pogues playing this at a gig in London circa 1987. Thatcher was still in office, so "Maggie, I wish I'd never seen your face" drew wild cheers.
They played this at Glasgow Barrowlands on St Patrick night around 1989 Spider took me back stage to meet the band A memory I will keep forever and this cover takes me back to that night I have Shane’s autograph on the back of his benson and hedges cig packet Thanks Spider
There is a recording from the album 'Just Look Them Straight In The Eye And Say... Pogue Mahone!' which is a performance of this at the Barrowlands with Kirsty McColl on backup, which means it was likely a part of the If I should Fall Tour. It may just be the very performance you were at :)
I saw Mojo Nixon... open for the Pogues... who were opening for the Violent Femmes. At an outdoor concert in the summer, back when they used to let you bring in coolers of beer, in a light rain that stirred up just enough mud to cover the dancing crowd. One of the best concerts/nights of my life.
No I’m afraid it was just his first encounter losing his virginity on a patch of grass the once with a overweight woman in her mid 30’s yes he was 16 or 17 he said he couldn’t remember he went on to say it was inspired by a true story but after reading it , there’s hardly anything related to the song , her name wasn’t Maggie may he took that name from a Liverpool folk song about a Liverpool prostitute called that name , that was it no relationship whatsoever just a short encounter he and his friends sneaked in to a jazz festival that’s where he had sex with her no more than that !! according to him during an interview in Q magazine 2007 so really there’s not much in the song that is actually true going off his own account, so no your wrong it’s certainly not all true read his own account
I only saw Shane once with the Popes. Pretty much the Pogues. I think he was relatively sober. Amazing show! He got hit with so many panties but he didn't miss a beat!
Guilty. I sang in a pub band in London for a few years in the 90s - At least half the set was the Pogues, and I did my best Shane impressions for most of the rest! Thanks Shane.
This is so great! My best friend Joe, may he RIP hated this by Rod Stewat in 1971. The Pogues remain a favorite regardless of what Dennis Miller said. What? "I'm a sucker for lyrics". That was it.
The Pogues and Shane did for Irish Music what Bob Marley and the Wailers did for Reggae, introducing it to the masses. Bob was always stoned and Shane something else!
im sorry but anyone who says no soul to a irish version of somthing dont understand irish at all n im only parts but i get it on damn near every cover a irish band does its a tribute n thers nothing but soul to the person who first wrote it :P cheers n beers i think the pouges did rod a good cover here!
@peacefrog1916 - It doens't matter what nationality that you regard the pogues but what they regard themselves as. They are a mix, some Irish, some Scottish and London-Irish.
He shares a scruffy style, very well, with Johnny and Tim Burton. So far I like JD’s scruffy best. RIP Shane. Love this song. I didn’t know Rod was covering it.
@@dondamon4669 hair, hat, clothes butt I’m a non-smoker with allergies, so I’m a bit sad to see so many pictures of him with a rolled smokeable hanging out his mouth. Just because it hasn’t given Keith mouth, throat, lung cancer yet doesn’t mean Johnny will be resilient in the habit.
I prefer the Rod Stewart version better, but this is an AMAZING cover. The Pogues really transform the song into something beautiful and wholly their own.
Actually, this is NOT a Faces song, it was written by Stewart and Martin Quittenton, and recorded for 'Every Picture Tells a Story'; as far as I know, the only members of the Faces to even take part in the recording, were Ronnie Wood and organist Ian McLagan.
***** when Rod appeared on TOTPs with this tune all the Faces were there, and he toured that year with the Faces, and they were playing this and You Wear It Well :) But you may be right on the original recording I don't know if Ronnie Lane and Kenney Jones were on the recording :)
Barry McCall yes Barry when the Faces broke up Ron Woods would join the Rolling Stones, and the Faces drummer Kenney Jones would be the new drummer for the Who after Keith Moon's death
A truly amazing band of incredibly talented musicians, and with the writings and vocals of Shane, took Irish music to the masses.

How did I never hear this done by The Pogues? Shane has so much stuff that 40 years later I never heard. amazing.
Rest in Peace, Shane. Thank you for the songs. 🙏🙏
❤
I saw the Pogues play this song in concert at the Ritz in New York 1987. Joe Strummer was on guitar. What a wonderful night.
KnightOwl2006
Awwwww. I want that memory.

You are lucky as all hell
lucky person xx
Wow well envious 👍

people say Shane McGowan is a case of wasted talent. The man defines his own genre of music, he's inimitable and uncompromised
I am a massive pogues fan honestly shane had his issues but a lot of singers and famous people do he wrote some crackers legend in my eyes always
The Bruce Springsteen quote about Shane is perfect.
I have loved the Pogues since 1986 -- how have I never heard this? Absolutely brilliant!
A legend's song, sung by another legend. legendary
Bloody magnificent, Rock on Shane. Downunder South Australia.
RIP, Shane. Many thanks for all your great poetry and your wild craic ... ❤😊
I was today years old when I learned The Pogues did a cover of "Maggie May." It's a great take on one of my all-time favorite songs.
Fond memories of The Pogues playing this at a gig in London circa 1987. Thatcher was still in office, so "Maggie, I wish I'd never seen your face" drew wild cheers.
At 74 I'm just finding the Pogues. What superb alive music.
Always loved this song and always loved the Pogues. What a great combination !
They played this at Glasgow Barrowlands on St Patrick night around 1989
Spider took me back stage to meet the band
A memory I will keep forever and this cover takes me back to that night
I have Shane’s autograph on the back of his benson and hedges cig packet

Lucky! What a great experience
This song just reminds me of local festivals and fairs. There’s something about that accordion.
Shane was a song writing and singing genius A truly wonderful man. R.I.P Shane
Its a Rod Stewart song... but nevertheless Shane was amazing!
One of the best songs ever sung by one of the best Bands!
Wait! Was this at some sort of music festival south of Buffalo circa 1989?
Never knew they did this version of one of my all time top songs and it’s Shane too a T’ love it , god bless Shane and them all !!
Awesome cover..Absolutely adore this song.
Wow. What a version of this great song.
Everything here - the vocals, that accordion, etc.
He died and I discovered him, I'm working my way through all the wonderful music.

Fantastic version wowwwwww!!!!
I love discovering a band i love covering a song i love.
Matthew Stryker that is just so gay
Don't be cruel to a heart that true.
I agree bro.
Omg. This is the only thing that could make me love this song more.
This song make me feel happy and sad at the same time. All my heartaches surround me.
yeah some sad bloke gets snagged by a cougar and does not know how to rid himself of her motherly ambivalence.
Good songs do that!
One of the best covers of a song ever, back when Shane was only half drunk.
top notch cover. To the Pogues and Peace, whatever they are.
this is beyond awesome
In the midst of horror and the collapse of the Western world, I retreat to the music and things that make life worthwhile!
Aye!

God damn they nailed this song like only they could.

Great song, great band.
There are no better songs ever! 😢🎉
the greatest Shane MacGowan impersonator was Shane MacGowan everyone else in the TradPunk genre just want to be him
Guilty. I sang in a pub band in London for a few years in the 90s - At least half the set was the Pogues, and I did my best Shane impressions for most of the rest!
Thanks Shane.
Utterly brilliant! Never heard this version and wow what a cover!

The best cover version really!
This is so great! My best friend Joe, may he RIP hated this by Rod Stewat in 1971. The Pogues remain a favorite regardless of what Dennis Miller said. What? "I'm a sucker for lyrics". That was it.

that was the best cover I have found so far.
Great cover!
Brilliant cover 👏 👌 👍
back to the bar
LOVE!!!
Going thru a stack of CD's, came across a CD labeled Shane McGowan. What the hell is this? Now, my favourite
The Pogues and Shane did for Irish Music what Bob Marley and the Wailers did for Reggae, introducing it to the masses. Bob was always stoned and Shane something else!
Magnificent!
killer version!
im sorry but anyone who says no soul to a irish version of somthing dont understand irish at all n im only parts but i get it on damn near every cover a irish band does its a tribute n thers nothing but soul to the person who first wrote it :P cheers n beers i think the pouges did rod a good cover here!

@jackster1212 Wow... that sounds amazing, jackster. I love the pogues. And I love this photo of them too...
I love this so much! It makes me feel happy/sad lol
wow this version is right cool
A good rendition.
@peacefrog1916 - It doens't matter what nationality that you regard the pogues but what they regard themselves as. They are a mix, some Irish, some Scottish and London-Irish.
They’re playing Irish music. For all I care they could be from Serbia. They’re representing Ireland.
lovelyyyyyyyy!
awesome
He shares a scruffy style, very well, with Johnny and Tim Burton. So far I like JD’s scruffy best. RIP Shane. Love this song. I didn’t know Rod was covering it.
You talking about clothes??
@@dondamon4669 hair, hat, clothes butt I’m a non-smoker with allergies, so I’m a bit sad to see so many pictures of him with a rolled smokeable hanging out his mouth. Just because it hasn’t given Keith mouth, throat, lung cancer yet doesn’t mean Johnny will be resilient in the habit.
Legend ❤
Is it truly by The Pogues?! It fits in one hand but not in the other. The best.
First time hearing this,s macgowan, living legend
Awesome
Never knew they covered this song! Wished they would've did a turn on 'Every Picture Tells A Story' which is THE Rod Stewart tune.
One of the bestest!
brilliant.
happy bday master
bloody brilliant! :D
Whoa 😮😊
I prefer the Rod Stewart version better, but this is an AMAZING cover. The Pogues really transform the song into something beautiful and wholly their own.
What a song and Shane does it proud, fist time I've heard this, fukin tune !!!!

the same ronnie woods from the stones question mark
Barry McCall yes Barry when the Faces broke up Ron Woods would join the Rolling Stones, and the Faces drummer Kenney Jones would be the new drummer for the Who after Keith Moon's death
+Barry McCall Same bloke
People above, it's Ron Wood not Woods. Come on, the Stones are Rock and Roll 101, gotta get that right, even if he is only their third lead guitarist.
It's that Gaelige Folk punch that makes this the best version!
Saw the Pogues at horden pavilion , Sydney in 1990 it was a pissy night
i love Rods version,,,but this is EPIC!!!!!!!
RIP Shane 🙏🙏🙏
