I’m a Brit now living in France. I’ve just bought a VW with adaptive cruise control. It works well, but I’ve had a few issues. If the car in front pulls into a slip lane to turn off, the ACC sometimes stays locked on to it and slows right down even though the road ahead is clear, causing annoyance to cars behind who can’t figure out why I’ve slowed down. And sometimes it locks on to a cyclist at the side of the road and brakes suddenly. You’ve got to keep your wits about you.

So you're not hitting the brake pedal when approaching those red lights? Then I assume the rear brake lights are not going on. Isn't that dangerous for drivers behind you if they don't see brake lights?

This is a great question. The quick answer is the brake lights do come on when the car applies the brakes.
I am not an expert in these matters. In this video or explanation I am not recommending that you can take your eyes off the road at any time. These systems are not intended to drive the car. So you must remain alert and in control of your vehicle at all times.
I did some research and will do my best to answer this in detail. It may seem like this is new technology. It is true that, Volkswagen is always updating their safety technology and using the latest state of the art systems. Pre- Collision systems have been around for some time.
In 2003 Pre-collision systems began to appear on the market. They were rare and only on the most expensive cars. These first systems were not as sophisticated as today's systems. They used lasers and infrared to detect objects in front of the car. By about 2011 you would see them more regularly in Luxury cars like Audi, Lexus, and some limited Volkswagens, and Toyotas. Even in these early systems the brake lights came on when the car applied the brakes.
So where as in 2011 you may have only seen systems like this on a Volkswagen Phaeton, and Touareg and even then it was rare and only on top models. Then it only had the ability to see cars and these early systems were not as fast. For example if you are going 70 and following at 2 car links. ( I would not recommend this) If the car in front of you applied its brakes and slowed to 51, that being about a 19mph difference, the Pre-Collision system may have prevented an accident.
I do want to take a moment to differentiate between two features here. Adaptive Cruise, and Pre-collision. They both use the same sensors. If you have the Adaptive Cruise set it will keep you at a safe distance. As shown in the video.
Pre-collision systems work even if the cruise is not on. They work if the driver gets distracted and the car in front of you hits the breaks. The Pre-collision system will first warn the driver if it thinks a crash is going to occur. If the driver does not react it will apply the brakes and set seatbelt pretensioners.
Nowadays systems are on many more cars. Like in this video you see it on this, Taos. You can get it on many other Volkswagens also. Pre-collision systems now use multiple cameras, and radar systems. Not only can they recognise cars but can sometimes detect pedestrians. They can also usually prevent a crash at a 30mph difference in speed. If you are following at a safe distance, the driver takes over, and further applies the brakes and steers the car. They usually can prevent an accident all together.

i think it should turn on the rear break light even when it breaks itself

Do i need a special package to have adaptive cruise control?

Will the car stop on its own at a red light if there’s no cars in front for example, if you were the only one approaching a red light, will it read the red light and come to a stop

No, it uses the vehicle in front of you for reference.

@@OsborneCox.69.420 OK thank you I think that’s good for him to mention in the video because I believe that adaptive cruise control is designed for highway use only

@@DetailingSolutions that’s what it’s really intended for. yes, you can kind of use it around town, but I wouldn’t rely on adaptive cruise control in stop&go traffic.

What does the button on the bottom right of the left side of the steering wheel do. Ie the one under the button that turns on the cruise control

Good question. That is the cancel button. Thanks for pointing out that I missed it. If you push that button while the cruise control is on and set for a specific speed. It will cancel the cruise, the car will just coast. But the car will remember the last set speed. If you push the resume button the car will accelerate to the previously set speed.

God as if lane assist and side assist aren’t annoying enough , imagine fiddling about like this for ages! My car Golf just slams the breaks on but I don’t have to go through all that changing distance as it warms me if too close and slowing speeding the car up manually. Fuck that. Thanks for vid though. Oh and don’t get me started on engine cutting out when sat in traffic. Before I set off I have to remember to turn it off. Ditto lane assist each time engine shuts down.

You rushed through how to set the distance control and it is certainly not clear which graphic indicated a close versus a far following distance. This deserves more, clearer detail.

Thank you I am always looking for ways to make my videos better. I will do another video in adaptive cruise soon. Until then check out this one I did earlier. I may have spent more time on following distance in this video. th-cam.com/video/FZl1NlKXXjc/w-d-xo.html
