Thanks Tom, I really want to try a silver inlay but I'm thinking of using silver wire rather than melting it, what do you think?
@@MikeHolton silver melts at about 1800 degrees. Pouring molten silver into a wooden slot would cause a big fire. You would have to fabricate the silver into the shape desired then get it glued into the wood. It would also cost a bit. Silver is about $20 an ounce. Bronze or brass would be more cost effective. @@tomweishaar2998 Thanks Tom, I was considering cutting a recess with an undercut and then hammering silver wire into the recess. Like you said, silver is expensive so I will experiment with cheaper alternatives first. All the best and thanks again for your reply. Mike
As a former amateur archaeologist with an infatuation for prehistory, the bowl is singing to me on so many levels. It's not just beautiful wood, it's a piece of prehistory, and a stunning work of art 😍

Of course sir. You are very talented and I've also seen you appreciate beautiful wood as it is. Just in this particular one, in my opinion, I would have kept it natural, but that's just me. You should watch your vid objectively, like you were watching another channel.
As a much more novice turner, I appreciate you showing when things aren't working quite as intended and how you go about dealing with them. First, it shows that everyone has to overcome challenges sometimes. Second, it gives me ideas to deal with my challenges.
Thanks! The one thing that helped me most when I started was to make myself finish every piece I made, if something was not going well, rather than just throw it away I would keep on working until it was done. You build up a knowledge of how to deal with situations and make things work.

It’s absolutely incredible to think of the fact that this piece of wood has been around longer than so much of recorded human history. The fact that it lasted so long, to wind its way up into your workshop, and to be turned into such a gorgeous piece of art that will likely last longer still evokes a strange sense of nostalgia in me.

Bogwood , such a blast from the past for me , I remember a helping a friend who was homesteading in Ireland 40 years ago harvesting peat and finding all kind of ( mostly small ) pieces of bog wood , all deeply blackened ..
It's amazing to look at, the colour is just so rich, would love to have a load more.
I have only been watching your channel for the last 6 months and each woodturning project is a real work of art. I have learned so much in those months that it makes me want to go out and buy a lathe.

It's amazing that wood this age was still in a condition to be worked. I know oak is especially durable and bogs are renown for their preservation properties but I am still in awe of this wood's integrity and beauty. An astounding piece, flaws and all.

The colours in this bowl are memerising - I wouldn't have minded the holes or cracks, it's part of the wood's history and character but you're obviously a perfectionist and to my eyes it's perfect!

Thanks Barry, if I had much hair it would have been pulled out, I cut out about an hour of footage of me turning back and trying again. But we got there eventually, well we got to a point I could deal with lol.

You find such interesting wood for your projects. I’ll be honest. I didn’t know there was wood recovered from bogs. Makes for a very interesting piece. The darkened wood contrasted nicely with the metal inlay.

WOW !!! I keep thinking about the 5000 years and all the history and the lives that have been lived between then and now, echoing down the ages. I love the way you see the beauty in it and give it a new life and most especially the acceptance of the cracks in it. There seems a kind of reverence in that. As to the metal, I think of it as anchoring it in the present, by way of a wee pause in the time when the formula for the metal was developed. Lucky, lucky person that wins it.

This bit of wood was a week or so away from being a lump of coal! Well done making that bowl - I was on the edge of my seat watching through my hands as I thoroughly expected it to disintegrate. Thankfully that did not happen, phew!

You did such an awesome job on this bog oak piece. I'm so happy you kept trying and didn't resort to either giving up or filling it with resin and adding lights. 🥰
That black part makes me think the tree might have gone through quite a fire at some time in its life. During that 5,300 years, it must have gone through a lot. To me, this is a showpiece bowl..I'd put into a showcase box and place it prominently on display in my home... something visitors could ask about. Not for me. For the wood, for the bowl... for all your hard work. I think I'd even have the video there so people could watch you make this beautiful piece of art.

Good afternoon Mike. I’m behind with my viewing as I’ve been with my Son decorating my Grandson’s bedroom and building furniture near Paris for ten days. I’m catching up slowly and feeling guilty sitting with my feet up rather than playing in my workshop. That’s a fantastic piece of wood with a lovely inlay and shine. Well worth the effort 🌞

I think it must have been down for quite a while ,@@MikeHolton . The widow forwarded the piece to my neighbor after her husband passed away. I get the idea that it was in his shop for a while.

Such a lovely bowl. I liked how you melted the the sliver (don't remember the correct terminology for the inlay), the sliver brought out the wood grain of the bowl. Wonderfully fantastic wood turning.

It's fun to try, I started with pewter which is safer than woods metal as it does not contain lead or cadmium. All the best, Mike
Wow that was a challenge. I expected the wood to be difficult to turn, but it seemed to turn relatively normal based on the chips. I was expecting to see dust. The cracks and soft spots were very difficult. I was talking to the monitor saying time to use Milliput. As you said, the metal needs some mechanical means to hold it in place. Some of the cracks were just the wrong shape.
I had not heard of Woods metal before. Very interesting. So much easier to use than pewter, just need to protect against the dust.
The bowl looks terrific, so many nuances in grain and colour. Very well done as usual.

I got the idea from an old turning book I bought off eBay and saw it being used to fill the holes in a banksia nut. The wood was hard but nothing unusual thank goodness lol
