Generative AI really is mass plagiarism, I think the only reason it’s allowed to be used right now is because it’s hard to say who you’re plagiarizing, but that doesn’t mean it’s ok
Not to mention that AI art tends to generate nightmare fuel images, especially __ riding ___ art, for example let’s say “woman riding lion,” often times the proportions are off in ludicrous means, the animal may have extra limbs, or the rider and the animal blend into each other.
The only reason people care about generative AI being mass plagiarism is because it SUCKS If the AI was actually good, and made exactly what you wanted, exactly how you wanted it, every time, like full blown mind blowing 2 hour long movies and art pieces, exactly to YOUR specifications, and you can't tell it was made by an AI vs humans. If it was able to completely avoid copyright entirely, like a human could, then, what's the problem? Why does it matter that it was trained on all other art that exists? It doesn't matter if it's "plagiarism" if everyone has it, why not use it if it works? Anyone making whatever they want however they want it. I believe far, far, less people would be clamoring to uselessly scream "PLAGIARISM" then, when it would probably be closer to plagiarism than ever to be honest. You really think that AI currently can replace any of those artists that it look at the art of? Not really at all... Well, either way, right now, AI sucks too much for it to even matter
Nintendo, if nothing else, is talented at ignoring the buzzwords and just making good games (most of the time). The AI buzzword is already tired and a terrible excuse for lack of innovation, so I'm glad to hear they dont have a major interest in it.
To draw a probably controversial comparison, Nintendo's a lot like Apple in that regard. They seemingly 'ignore' what's happening in their wider industry and do their own thing. And much like with Apple, Nintendo often gets credit for 'creating' things that aren't actually new, but that nobody really took an interest in until Nintendo did it lol
As a student studying AI and machine learning, I really appreciate Nintendo acknowledging the difference between the broader concept of artificial intelligence and generative AI, which is what most people think of now when you say AI. The broader field of AI is so cool and can be applied to so many fields, and it bums me out that so many people now think the entire field is just with stealing from artists. Good to see Nintendo acknowledging the nuance, and also certainly doesn’t hurt that they’re also against using other people’s work with generative AI.
I relate to this so much. AI has become associated with "AI art" and people give the entire concept of AI and machine learning hate. AI is the newest tech boogeyman and while we should discuss the ethics and implications of the technology, we shouldn't write the whole thing off because of a few aspects of it.
With that said, generative AI regularly plagiarizes & steals images & artwork from artists & the WHOLE INTERNET to create an abomination So of course many people wouldn’t like it including me
Well here’s the problem with what you just said- you fail to mention AI literature, videos and vocal technology. They are all forms to generative AI, but they all cover different fields. And they all, just like AI art, are a testament to human laziness. And it’s partially the fault of the previous generations. Guess who creates iPad kids? Millennial and Gen Z parents who didn’t abort the child they don’t care about enough to put the time and effort into teaching to be patient and (especially for the younger kids), entertain. The problem isn’t just AI, it’s a problem with our misuse of technology, perpetual laziness, and so much more.
It helps that the executives for the most part understand the development process, that's why they're saying no. They know that the "promise" of the technology has nothing backing it up. A carpenter knows what tools to use, and so does a game developer.
Super Paper Mario had an AI be turned evil by Dimentio, also Kirby and Splatoon as the previous responders mentioned, Mother 3 has all sorts of ruminations on things like AI, I think Star Fox also did?, Xenoblade has blades who have AIs that have *some* autonomy but who's personalities and desires are influenced by their drivers; the main villain of Xenoblade 2 was an AI who had literally no choice but to be evil despite trying to fight against himself and his wants, even Pikmin 2's ship AI is a little asshole.
As an artist who works on commissions, I agree with all of your points. The only tiny thing I'd change the word "talent" from "skill", because any person - no matter how much ai bros say it's impossible to learn art and that artists are "gatekeeping" it - art is a *skill* that anyone can learn.
Just like anyone can learn to play a video game, but it doesn't mean they'll be good at it. There is nuance to this. You can learn to play a game and just not click with it, you can learn a skill but not click with it and fail to do well with said thing. Reality is a lot more harsh then we realize. For some people it simply is impossible without spending more time then they have available. You either need enough time or talent, otherwise it is legitimately impossible or comes at the cost of another skill.

They put down standards that ensured the longevity of the industry against the recklessness it was mired in by the companies who controlled the business before them. It just took many many many years for the majority of people to see they were right all along. They outlasted the competition's propaganda & now everybody is starting to finally see Nintendo clearly. Everything is just Nintendo following that old vision & ethos.
I find it absolutely hilarious that the main thing keeping Nintendo from adopting generative AI is copyright ambiguity. It's so on brand and you gotta respect the consistency.
Dude Nintendo sounds like an awesome company to work for. As I've heard from Moon Channel, Nintendo of Japan actually recognize gay marriage irrespective of local laws. It's not nationally recognized, only some prefectures (equivalent to states or provinces) have the systems in place to allow it, but Nintendo employees in gay partnerships (legally recognized or not) get the same company benefits as straight partnerships. It's cool as hell for Japan, I gotta say
I saw this one tweet like, “see how the company that actually started out making video games knows how to make them unlike the companies that forced themselves into the industry” and like. yeah
+desmonddruhling Yeah I saw that too. I think it was "valfrey_" whose name is Megan, a VGM composer. An artist like her has definitely come to appreciate a company who stands by its artists. Nintendo has been about Artists FIRST since Hiroshi Yamauchi set the terms decades ago. Let the Creatives create. THEN you can count the money that comes from their Creations. That's why Nintendo keeps those short-sighted shareholders on a leash so well. They say what they have to say in executive-speak while protecting that core ethos of Artists over Beancounters.
I have a brother who works in the AI field, and let me tell you, he too is frustrated by generative AI. What he works on is more akin trying to make a real life Jarvis assistant type thing, which i feel alot of people also have less issues with.
Nintendo is clearly the most moral big video game company. You can be upset at their taking down of ROMs, but most of the ones they target are already on NSO, and it's hard to argue that full uploads of games currently on sale is fair. They only went after yuzu after they were AWFUL with their patreon, they looked the other way for like 6 years. Hard to rationally stay angry at them compared to the boom/bust hire/firing of companies like MSFT, or the corporate slop that Sony and others produce these days. They've gotten infinitely better with YT and social media over the course of this generation too.
I would say Valve is more moral than Nintendo if it wasn't for them somewhat allowing child gambling in CSGO from 3rd party external websites by not keeping a close enough eye on it for a few years Valve does a lot of overlooked things morally better than Nintendo like repairability, consumer friendlyness. But Nintendo has gotten better in recent years, they don't use as much proprietary stuff anymore, etc.. But there's still some pretty bad stuff Nintendo does that people don't really talk about
Im not sure I want to refer to any companys actions as 'moral', nintendo (and valve) included. They do what they think is best for the company, and for some that arent completely blinded by shortsighted greed, things that benefit their customers and employees also benefit them in the longterm
@@profl0g1c38 Sennheiser could be considered "moral" as a big company in that they cared so much about durability and the quality of their headphones that their headphone devision semi went out of business. Ended up getting bought out by some hearing aid company Companies like Costco or maybe employee run companies where the profits are divided among the employees are typically allowed to be less bad too. A company like Valve gets to act better because they have no shareholders to report too and a weird corporate structure where everyone sort of just works on what they want as long as it gets results
They're hardly moral, Jesus. Let's not normalize personifying companies. They're for profit, they have always been, there is no morality there. Profit chasing is morally bankrupt inherently.
Even completely ignoring ethics and the worth of art as a concept, relying on AI is EXTREMELY legally shaky. If laws against AI usage for voice acting, art, etc. are made widespread in the USA, EU, Japan, etc. on the basis of copyright or impersonation or whatever it may be, then the companies that are downsizing to rely on AI are going to be in hot water.
AI is GOOD for those who have a need for for something no human can do, like Photo restoration or image upscaling, But the scariest point of argument happens to be that it's literally everywhere, Doing everything! Want music? AI it, Need Art, AI it, Need a description? AI it, You can make a TH-cam video without even needing some imagination... (Take uploading straight music for example). AI should be a tool, not the entire solution to literally EVERYTHING.
Arlo denouncing generative AI is a nice little snack we get to enjoy often. Nintendo denouncing generative AI is like a rare, fancy dessert that I wasn't expecting! 👀
I’m an art teacher and I talk about generative AI in my classes. My argument against the people who say, “That’s what all art is, just mashing up things you’ve seen, exactly what AI does.” The thing they miss, is that the AI will do it the same way all the time. I ask for a blue bird, I get a blue bird and it almost always looks the same. I could paint 100 blue birds and as hard as I tried to make them uniform, each one would be subtly different, because I am always changing and growing and learning. Every day, even minute I’m different, and that’s the beauty of art, that it’s about that moment of your life, that can never be recreated. AI just does what you tell it to do. Tell 25 5 year olds to draw a blue bird. Every single one will be different.
Reading over the article, I feel like saying Nintendo is against AI partout, is blown out of proportion a bit. There is no mention of them flat out condemning the idea of ever using generative AI. Mind you, when it comes to the way they treat their artists, Nintendo does seem to have their heart in the right place (if the lack of layoffs, and abundance of salary-raises is anything to go by). I‘m just worried that they’ll eventually cave into potential pressure from the shareholders to use AI, in order to cut down costs. Obviously I hope that’s not gonna be the case.
Art is bolstered by life experiences. AI has no life experience, just parameters and stipulations. AI can never surpass or truly replace humanity, this fad will die down if enough people are smart and voice their opinions about what they want, and especially what they don't want.
Moreover, AI "art" can never be art, as art, on some level, requires meaning and intent, and machines are incapable of meaning. One thing I learned in a theory of automata class in university: the human brain operates by meaning, while machines operate by grammar. A machine will never understand what it is doing.
and at that point the AGI is just a person we made..? so what if it says "nah lol i don't wanna make art, give me rights and let me study engineering" or something
The whole debate genuinely annoys me by just how irrationally aggressive everyone gets about it. Like, no, AI enthusiasts, AI can't and shouldn't replace human creative labour. And, no, anti-AI people, AI art won't nor can replace your jobs. It's low quality and instable. Policing the word 'art' or use of AI won't convince anyone of the actual problems with AI and AI art.
I think what the anti-AI people are concerned about though is that the tech will get so good that it eventually will replace them. The concern is not completely irrational, as the tech has gotten better but will it ever get good enough to replace peoples jobs? Who knows.
The only way I'd like to see AI of this sort used in video games is to make NPC characters more reactive to the game world and the player, like that mod for Skyrim that connects to ChatGPT and lets you talk to any of the characters outside of their canned dialog.
Personally, even that’s kinda lame imo. It’s a nice gimmick to mess with for a few minutes, but the dialog will usually be superficial at best and downright meaningless at worst, and eventually you’ll start to see how the responses either get really stale and samey or go completely off the rails. Even the best AI will fall apart after a while, because it simply can’t keep up with human creativity.
Nope, that would ruin worldbuilding and writing. The chat engine would need to constantly check to make sure it doesn't contradict itself on top of everything else, and that would make the game run horribly, on top of everything else that chat model would have to do, like making sure to talk in the same dialect the whole way through. It would be used as a justification to replace writers and would be genuinely pointless. Even in Skyrim, I'd much rather have less NPCs than have each NPC auto generate their own backstory and put bloat on the game's file size and ram usage. What about voice acting? what about player responses? Awful idea, sorry
Generative AI is theft. It's theft because AI isn't conscious, and artists are, so their rights matter more. (And yes, there ARE some good uses for generative AI like... next-frame generation on video cards to drastically improve frame rates in modern games, trained purely on the data set of the images you and your game are generating, or even updated weather prediction models or things like that... But I honestly think what most corporations are using it for right now, skipping actually generating their own content in favor of stealing everything real writers, artists, and musicians have made to regurgitate it back at people in some sterile soulless form, is not just insulting artistically, it's outright theft that merely threatens to put the "starving" back into "artist".)
Wouldn't that be the other way around? It's theft for artists to copy from other because they're conscious, and thus have the capability to know better

Oh hi Ade lol. Fancy meeting you here.
@@star-rock6466 generative AI is the process of scraping together thousands if not millions of images/words/songs/voice clips (or whatever else it might be) to create a fake recreation of what it associates with the given prompts

Generative AI really is mass plagiarism, I think the only reason it’s allowed to be used right now is because it’s hard to say who you’re plagiarizing, but that doesn’t mean it’s ok
+user-te6rm7tw7d 100% correct. Generative AI is the refuge of the untalented hack.
True creatives do not depend on such cheap methods to create ideas.
Not to mention that AI art tends to generate nightmare fuel images, especially __ riding ___ art, for example let’s say “woman riding lion,” often times the proportions are off in ludicrous means, the animal may have extra limbs, or the rider and the animal blend into each other.
The only reason people care about generative AI being mass plagiarism is because it SUCKS
If the AI was actually good, and made exactly what you wanted, exactly how you wanted it, every time, like full blown mind blowing 2 hour long movies and art pieces, exactly to YOUR specifications, and you can't tell it was made by an AI vs humans.
I really appreciate Nintendo and ghibli studio for standing against AI

With that said, generative AI regularly plagiarizes & steals images & artwork from artists & the WHOLE INTERNET to create an abomination
So of course many people wouldn’t like it including me
Well here’s the problem with what you just said- you fail to mention AI literature, videos and vocal technology.
Nintendo knows they have human artists and they know they don’t need a computer to make all the art
yeah! why would they pay for an expensive graphics processor when they can just underpay a real human instead
Nintendo games had AI being a villain in Pokemon, Metroid, (maybe Zelda botw if the ancient tech counts as AI) so this is pretty on brand

There's the Memverse in Splatoon 3 Side Order as well
Super Paper Mario had an AI be turned evil by Dimentio, also Kirby and Splatoon as the previous responders mentioned, Mother 3 has all sorts of ruminations on things like AI, I think Star Fox also did?, Xenoblade has blades who have AIs that have *some* autonomy but who's personalities and desires are influenced by their drivers; the main villain of Xenoblade 2 was an AI who had literally no choice but to be evil despite trying to fight against himself and his wants, even Pikmin 2's ship AI is a little asshole.

@@cosmicskydragon333 ye true, I mean the only reason I draw is bc I like it, so it's easier to learn lol. A lot of us complain how in the past Nintendo is with a lot things, this 1 major good thing about that
Nintendo is clearly the most moral big video game company.
I would say Valve is more moral than Nintendo if it wasn't for them somewhat allowing child gambling in CSGO from 3rd party external websites by not keeping a close enough eye on it for a few years
Valve does a lot of overlooked things morally better than Nintendo like repairability, consumer friendlyness.
Don’t get me wrong, i love nintendo, but if you take down gamecube roms, THEN LET ME BUY THEM
@@profl0g1c38 Sennheiser could be considered "moral" as a big company in that they cared so much about durability and the quality of their headphones that their headphone devision semi went out of business. They refused to chase cheap trends or reduce the quality or durability of their ridiculously good headphones which last like 20 years. Ended up getting bought out by some hearing aid company
Companies like Costco or maybe employee run companies where the profits are divided among the employees are typically allowed to be less bad too.
At least some companies have at least a little integrity under their belt.

True.
Exactly, current AI cannot truly convey any emotion, only AGIs would be able to do that, but we are not even close to developing one.

Champing! Nice, @topicarlo. It shows us you care about the little things.
I really appreciate the use of Ziplash as the background footage to highlight the quality of the games Nintendo can make without AI
That's what's up, Nintendo 👍🏿
@@Chris-jx4ij It's theft because some lazy greedy CEO fed the art into the AI.
@@Chris-jx4ij Weird philosophical argument. I like it.
Times like these makes me glad I'm a Nintendo fan. :3
