I recognize Despecito, Flowers, Shape of You, Hello, and WAP instantly and have trouble imagining how I would avoid those. Bad Guy was in the small list of songs that didn’t ring a bell for me in this medley. If that song is supposed to be as recognizable as all the others I’ve listed, I’m honestly shocked. The modern music climate and what exposes you to music or not is pretty weird, I guess.
So Polkamania was specifically released to commemorate 10 years since Mandatory Fun. As such, Al wanted to have all the songs be big hits released in the decade since then, and that's why you have so-called older songs like Shake It Off and Uptown Funk. Both released in 2014 in the months after Mandatory Fun. As an aside, as always AL makes sure to get the permission from the original artists for the songs he uses. Legally he doesn't have to because fair use protects parody but he likes to. And this time around the permission getting ranged from shooting Lin Manuel Miranda a quick text for "We Don't Talk About Bruno" to recording a video with Jamie Lee Curtis because she knows Cardi B's husband to get permission for WAP.
@@gaz-l621 Covers are not Fair Use so he did need to get permission from the original artists. There's this thing called Compulsory Licenses which means (in super simplified terms) that permission for covers is automatically granted, but that's only for the audio version. He'd still need permission to do a music video with those songs included. In fact, most of Weird Al's 'parodies' wouldn't be considered parodies if they were challenged in court. But since he gets permission from the artists and record labels involved anyways, it doesn't really change anything for him.

Holy crap it’s been THAT long since Mandatory Fun. Unreallll. My sister planted the Weird Al seed in my head when I was very small and I’ve always appreciated his work. Mind-blowingly good musician and extraordinarily intelligent.
Glad to see my tastes and Arlo's are so much alike with each video. Speaking of the Polka Medley formula: I was howling when the "slowdown phase" song this time around was Old Town Road. It wasn't supposed to work this well, but Al can turn ladles into floating orbs so anything goes at this point.
You are the one that I want to meet the most someday, because you come across really approachable and really cool/chill to me, which is good because there’s many I’d be too nervous to meet in person! I used to really like Weird Al's music way back when I was little. I listened to a lot of his stuff he put out in the 80s. I remember the music teacher in elementary school in the early 1990s talked about Amish Paradise as a way to talk about the Amish and things like shunning electricity and other historical things. I think the last album I bought by him was Running With Scissors. Admittedly I haven't really followed him since, but I still respect his work.

I ended up down a Weird Al rabbit hole after seeing the new polka video. Apparently he made a polka Pokerap for the second Pokémon movie; the one with Lugia and the three birds.
