    Got my sister's trombone. I've done trumpet for 8 years, so now I'm like a fish out of water lol.

    I'm a big guy about 6'5. I have the clarinet but it feels so fragile so I was thinking about the trombone or saxophone. I've got a little experience with the trombone in highschool. Is the trombone less complicated to learn than the clarinet?

    I’m a trombonist personally (have been for eleven years, I started when I was 8 and I’m 19 now!)
    The best advice I can give to anyone trying to learn this instrument is, don’t give up, yes this instrument is not at all easy to learn but it’s a lot of fun to play and has some very cool melodies and iconic parts in music that is played by the trombones.
    I’ll name a few
    Star wars
    Sir duke
    ride of the Valkyrie

    I really want to start teaching myself this but is there sizes? And is there specific mouth piece size I need? I need to know everything pleasee :)

    • @MusicTeacherWalker
      @MusicTeacherWalker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There really aren’t different sizes for trombone. All pretty standard. You could learn on a pbone which is a plastic trombone (a bit smaller and much lighter than a regular trombone). A standard mouthpiece size for trombone is 12C

    Man this is a difficult instrument. I'm not used to having to take the beginner lesson and not getting frustrated with how slow and easy it is. I've played guitar and bass and stuff for decades. But I found this bone at a thrift store and thought of all the cool things I could do with it if I could learn to play. It's not easy. Some of those positions you just have to sort of hope are in the right place. Lol. Any words of warning or advice are welcome. I assume the oil stuff that came with it goes on the part that slides back and forth.

    • @MusicTeacherWalker
      @MusicTeacherWalker  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes practice makes perfect for the slide positions and knowing exactly where to stop. I recommend using slide cream over oil for the trombone slides as they seem to last longer and be more effective. After you treat it with cream always have your spray bottle of water with you to spray down the slide before you play to get that smooth slickness of the slide.

    • @ScottPalmer-mp1we
      @ScottPalmer-mp1we ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I find it best to use the bell as a reference point, Fortunately for me, 6th position is a comfortable arm's length, and 7th is a stretch. 5th is the hardest, because it is in kind of a no-man's land. I've played as an amateur for many years and gauge 5th position by the sound.
      I think your doing well to take up the challenge of learning this instrument because the slide positions are not as comfortable to master as using a keyed instrument because a key is either up or down.

    • @PaulTheSkeptic
      @PaulTheSkeptic ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ScottPalmer-mp1we Yeah that's what makes it difficult. If you press a key or press down on a fret and pluck the string, you get a sound. Now you just have to worry about where to put these sounds. But trombone isn't like that. You just have to know your instrument well and I'm not used to that. I usually pick up new instruments quickly. But this is just so different from what I'm used to. Plus, it's a loud instrument. So finding time to practice while you sound like garbage doesn't make you popular. Lol. I can't just throw on headphones or turn down the volume.

    • @ScratchySlide
      @ScratchySlide ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PaulTheSkeptic Try buying a practice mute. They cut the noise right down. If you get the right one you can practice any time day or night. The slide positions are pretty easy. There is no definite absolute place where a note is on the trombone. Essentially the slide is just one huge tuning slide. You will see professional players make small slide adjustments for tuning. Just learn where the the positions are 1-7 and you'll be fine. Been a pro player for over 30 years and I still love it!!

    can't you get all these notes without the slide? so all from closed? i just starting out on a p bone plastic trombone and feel i'm making the notes more with my throat then with wind although I feel my lips vibrating and that slide seems to have no effect. i'm getting a d sharp on my tuner from closed which is e flat. Am i doing something wrong?

    • @MusicTeacherWalker
      @MusicTeacherWalker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      if you're getting Eb in closed position that probably means that you are trying to hit an F but it's falling flat (or below the pitch)...support the sound and push/squeeze with the corners of your mouth so the note is supported and you can hit an F sound which would be one interval higher than the lower Bb sound

    • @MusicTeacherWalker
      @MusicTeacherWalker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oldschoolcockneylover8138 there shouldn't be any "intense pain"...more like it should feel sore and a little numb from lots of buzzing that your mouth isn't used to yet. Advice is to practice buzzing with just your mouthpiece daily about 10-15 minutes to build your muscle stamina.
