      ebay you forgot ebay. It is like the best place to get used instruments. Also tromba and pbone are good plastic instruments but pampet is terrible and they make unusable trumpets that are practically bugles. Personaly plastic will be better for the new instruments from the 50-200$ range. Used is different though you can pick up a used yamaha clarinet for like 150$ in decent condition and like a decent yamaha trumpet like a ytr 136 that comes in silver for like 160$ and a trombone for like 150 on a bid and flutes are the cheapest for like 100$

    I've had a plastic trombone (red pBone) for the last 2 years. The main reasons why I use it is that I play in a marching band, and it's lighter, less fragile and warms up a lot faster. The pBone is 2.5x more expensive than this one. The slide is actually very scratchy at the beginning, but it's got smoother over time (not as smooth as the brass trombone, though). I generally use it with a metal mouthpiece because I find the sound is better. However, when I play to several hours in a row, or out in the cold, I prefer the plastic mouthpiece which is more comfortable. The tuning slide slides too much, so I has to stuck a teflon thread between the slide and the body. All in all, the sound is not as good as a brass trombone, you have to blow harder, but it's definitely worth it. But for the orchestra, I keep my heavy fragile brass Yamaha

    • @MadMusicBand
      @MadMusicBand  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I agree, I think if trombone is your main instrument, and for how cheap they are there really isn't any reason not to have a plastic trombone at some point. Different tools for different needs.

    Always good to hear of another Percussion Band Director. It can be rough for us because all the wind instruments function fundamentally differently in their tone production. It took a long time for me build up my concept of breathe support and embouchure for each instrument so I could support students effectively. Hope you are enjoying the band teacher career as much as I am! Best job in the world in my opinion!

    I played a plastic C trumpet on my senior trumpet recital and I actually enjoyed the warmer sound and consistent intonation I got with the plastic trumpet. I played a piece called the storyteller and it was probably the best piece on my recital. I almost feel like the plastic instruments are better at controlling your tone on and don’t let you get that “blast” tone as easy so they are almost better for the newest beginners as it’s easier to get a “good” tone and they stay in tune no matter the temperature so they are also a shout for marching band use. I might buy the plastic trombone just for a fun instrument at some point to mess around with.

    • @MadMusicBand
      @MadMusicBand  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've yet to try a plastic trumpet, but I'd like to. Plastic instruments are really nice for when marching band creeps into October and it starts to get really cold. Hard not to enjoy a fully functional instrument at $65.

    They do make carbon fiber trombones.
    Just about every part of the horn can be carbon fiber except the stockings of the slide, and any rotor valves that might be attached.
    Butler is the main company behind them and they sound great. Super popular to get an outer sleeve done for a lightweight slide.
    Ive noticed the full horns are popular amongst the older amateur crowd. When playing trombone isnt everyday and you have disposable income, a carbon fiber horn makes a lot of sense!

As somebody who taught themself trombone (I play euphonium so it’s not the hardest thing), my first trombone was a crappy and heavily dented straight tenor like yours, and my tone was a bit questionable at first, it’s just that practice, and not using my beyond abused trombone.

    I picked up a pbone when I was student teaching. It was nice, but in the end it stays at my parent’s place to play at community bands when visiting.
    I picked up a pbone mini though just for the ability to learn alto trombone on the cheap. That being said they will not replace my $4000 Yamaha bass trombone, but they’re not as bad as some people say.
    I would say if you ever get to check out a f attachment plastic trombone I would. It is not to bad. The rotor is a bit slow. I went with Tiger because it has a metal lead pipe that helps warm the sound slightly. Still doesn’t replace a brass horn, but it is a little closer. No much different than a fiberglass sousaphone and a metal one. Still different, but not bad.

    If you want a plastic trombone, get a pBone. Have one of the originals, played it for a couple years, it's great. Doesn't have the same feedback as a brass horn but it's really hard to tell from a disance. Just get a different mouthpiece and it will match any King 606 or Yamaha 354, the included mouthpiece is bad lol. I play a 3B and a 6B duo gravis regularly now, but I wouldn't hesitate to play a pBone.

    Plastic would be good for Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans. It also might be good for a first year student to see if they are going to stick with trombone or switch to another low brass instrument, or saxophone.

    I played trombone for 4 years in band, which was almost 20 years ago now. As nice as this plastic one sounds, surprisingly, I feel like for a student it's more or less just a decent home practice instrument, but I wouldn't have ever brought this thing to school. Band kids get a lot of flak in general from other kids, they don't need to be made fun of by other band kids to, js. 😂 Not that I am even sure my band director would have even allowed it.

    • @MadMusicBand

    I never did band but i have been experimenting with making my own instruments recently, even my quickly thrown together prototype instruments managed a sound similar to a clarinet and i made a section of pipe sound like a horn, from my experimenting you xan get similar results with so many different materials and shapes it would be insane if a company didnt get a passable instrument at a 50-100$ price point.

    Cheap amazon Instruments are highly underrated. I take two periods of band, so I can’t always buy the most expensive instruments and my trumpet is around $100, it has served me well for 1.5 years the only thing to watch out for are the valves drying out quickly, that may be an issue with the stock oil though.

    • @MadMusicBand
      @MadMusicBand  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      So far that's the consensus I've come to as well. I'm very happy with the quality of the trumpet and trombone I've gotten so far for how little money they were. I believe I'll check out a clarinet next, and that could very possibly break the streak of good instruments haha.

    Years ago, I found myself a Single Rotor Bass Trombone online for under $200. One of my Coworkers in the Navy had been looking over sheet music in the office trying to figure out why the piece they were playing sounded off at one part. I had to ask him if anyone was playing the bass part, noone was. The pedal note in the piece, so I ordered myself a new bass and joined them for a while. Kept that horn for years, my daughter used it in band, then broke is multiple times.. Ended up not being able to repair it from the amount of damage she did. also her band director replaced my 1 1/2 G with a 6 1/2 AL. :(

    The blessing looks like a ‘scholastic’ model, but i’m a little too lazy to do any research on when it was produced. The quality of that horn really depends whether it was made in the elkhart factory pre merger from like 1930-1980. If not, it’s probably made with crappy chinese materials and manufacturing. Also, you should play your F naturals a little farther out haha. Great video :)

      I'm not typically one to give blanket suggestions, so take it with a grain of salt, but for a beginner it would likely be worth starting on metal if you have a bit more budget. There is a bit more "tone" and it just feels a tad different than the plastic which would be worth getting used to if you know you're serious about sticking with it. That said, there's nothing wrong with starting on a horn like this, I still use mine everyday at school.
