      Y'know Paul., I hgave been playing trombone for 62 years, but I have always believed that you never stop learning and you should listen to everyone. I had forgotten about long tones and tend to go straight into arpeggios low to high. My bad. Thanks for the reminder, man.
      On another note, you really need to get on Pateron. I support three or four other content providers there and would love to provide support there to you as well. Please think about it.

    Is anybody else an experienced trombonist watching this to make sure they haven't been doing any of this wrong the entire time?

    I recently picked my trombone up after 34 years. The last time I played a single note was 9th grade in 1990. As I was cleaning out my grandparent's storage shed I found my trombone in its case in the corner. I couldn't believe it, and it was in pristine condition. I cleaned it, polished it, oiled it, and started to play. Brought back a lot of fond memories of my time in band. I have been taking lessons but I come here on my off days. You're instructions are phenomenal and I appreciate you sharing your expertise with us.

    I can't reiterate enough how important it is to practice buzzing on just the mouthpiece. If there's ever a line that I'm having trouble playing, i'll usually try to buzz it on the mouthpiece. It definitely is crazy how big of a difference it makes. Can't hit that high A above the staff? If you can buzz it on your mouthpiece I bet you can!

    You hold the slide almost the way baseball players are told to hold the bat-so gently somebody could easily take the bat out of their hands. No tension. Then you can have an ultra fast response.

    Thanks Paul. I'm pretty new to trombone (about 1yr in) and having a blast. I've definitely noted my challenges with tension (i.e, squeezing the grip hand holding the trombone) as I increase my effort and pressing to hard on the mouthpiece, especially when I try to hit a high D, Eb, F. Love the tips to back-off and revisit the long tones.

    Another to adjust the pressure is while you are playing pull the horn away until air starts escaping from around the mouthpiece. I do this when I do long tones and when I start to get tired as applying pressure is something you think you need to do, but that's not good. Thanks. I appreciate your videos.

  • @samcox6156

    Just from a trumpet players perspective cause I watched this out of curiosity for what overlaps trumpet you want lots of air pressure not a lot of air and that pressure to be highly highly controlled you want very little physical pressure

      Oh man, i miss those days lol. The Bb scale was the best and most amazing scale, until i met the Eb major scale. The best of them all, along with Ab major and F major as well. A major, B major, D major Etc. All suck, the C major scale is rather nice however.

      I’ve also just started getting the hang of the Bb major scale… though now that i’ve gotten an actual brass trombone, the 12c mouthpiece feels weird compared to the plastic, pbone 11c mouthpiece i was using.

    My sons been playing for 4 years, I played all through school but the last time I touched one was 21 years ago. I picked his up with wayyyy too much confidence and made an ass of myself lol I need to get back on the bike quickly. I told him I’ll learn a song over summer break

  • @thegreenexperiment1484
    @thegreenexperiment1484 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    as a didjeridoo player*, who is starting trombone, I can say that pressure is important.
    not all the pressures are important, though...
    ...just the so called "back-pressure": that's extremely important because it makes you not struggle on buzzing
    *"didjeridooing" since 2003

    Hey, I just started on the trombone after many years on the tuba, i also recently got braces, I feel like I don’t have the same sound when I don’t press as hard on the mouth peace, could that be because I’m not used to the instrument, the braces or just need time to practice not pressing as hard?

    Thirty years ago, I played in college as a music major until I realized I'd never be good enough to make a living and teaching sixth graders didn't interest me. So, I earned a different sheepskin. Now, my son is a degreed and happy music educator: define irony. 😆
    I haven't touched a horn in thirty years and am humble enough to start again (technically, I can still read and the like) from ground zero. Your videos are very helpful. Thanks.

  • @trumpettech456
    @trumpettech456 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Unbelievable. You advocate for less effort and then recommend buzzing. That is the worst of advice for beginners.
    No. The instrument is NOT an amplifier. It is a resonator. And the mouthpiece does not have that resonance . It takes much more effort to "buzz" the mouthpiece than to play the full instrument.

    I have a ''P- Bone'' Trombone, what advice do you have to play it since it's plastic?

    • @PiercetheUnshucked
      @PiercetheUnshucked 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My advice is to switch to brass when you get to an intermediate level:

    • @SiggeSvahn
      @SiggeSvahn 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Me too. The plastic ones has a relatively muffled sound and give more resistance to the air. Some notes on the brass ones are extremely easy to play (resonance in the brass metal).
