THANK YOU. I'm fixing to turn 70 and am learning Bugle, Trumpet, & Slide Trombone. I love to play music, but my guitar playing went out the window with the Carpal Tunnel surgery, ten years ago! I bought a Harbor Freight Bugle, just to hang on the wall for aesthetics, but curiosity overtook me, to see if I could squeeze any notes out of it. Then my grandson bought a Slide Trombone and brought it up here, so, I figure, it wouldn't hurt to see if I could blow a note on it...well, I went in a pawn shop, to see what was in there and saw a Trumpet, in a nice case. It had bell damage and a dent or two and one of the note valve buttons was missing. I figured Id repair the dents and find what thread pattern the key note buttons used and silver solder some brass screws onto three Nickles and customize my horn a tad. I'm watching every video I can, on forming my lips like a ghoul. And the old adage of when you're not able to do something...the adage is, "You're NOT holding your mouth right!" So you have taught me just one more piece of the puzzle, and three different ways to accomplish it !!! I take notes and save URL's of where I get them, for future reference! THANK YOU again. I subscribed with all notifications. You "SOUND" like you know what you're talking about!

Thank you so much, Lisa, that concept of directing the airstream downwards, in a certain angle, according to the pitch one wishes to reach, instead of forwards is working great for me and is, by far, the most effortless method of getting access to the upper range/high register that I have come across so far. The next thing I have to work on is sound quality, because reaching high notes is one thing, but to have them sound full and nice, is another challenge.
By the way, I play a flugabone (marching trombone) with a 6.5 AL (trombone) mouthpiece.

Try doing exercises like this in every warm up session, I think you will eventually see results. When I was in college, I wasn’t able to play this high either. But, a teacher introduced me to this concept and it has really helped me!

Instead of falling off everything above a top D, see how long you can hold it for and finish it clean. That gives you real strength and helped my high chops really well. Also I firmly believe you don’t have the note until you can play it at all dynamics, articulations and also with vibrato. Try and find high F in 2nd. It’s amazing for vib.

@@LisaLizTrombone On a fundamental level, yes (e.g. syllables, relaxing). I've been replacing some bad habits and playing softer as I play higher, which hopefully will allow everything to develop "properly". Also thing of resonating the notes up there so that they sound as full as possible, even at low dynamics. Your range is very impressive though, so I'm soaking this stuff up!
@@jazzbonept thanks Peter, I appreciate the compliment 😊 One of my teachers in college was a HUGE believer of doing high range exercises everyday for 10-15 minutes. Specifically one from the Arban’s book, taken up one half step at a time. I credit my high range to his influence and years and years of working on this stuff.

Just watched your beautiful video. I am wondering how much your advice to "relax" applies to the embouchure itself. The fact that it takes months or years to develop an upper register suggests that the embouchure muscles have to get stronger. Also, it is usually the embouchure muscles that get tired when working on range, suggesting tension among these muscles. This would seem to suggest that the embouchure muscles must tense up somewhat in order to develop these muscles. In addition to directing the air downward and raising the tongue I am wondering what exactly should be going on, the feeling, with the embouchure during range development? Thank you so much.

You are talking about vocal resonance and vowel shape of the vocal cavity and focusing of the embouchure aperture. The change of angle of air flow is just a result of the aperture focusing, the main game involves vowel, aperture and air flow.
Great trombone pedagogy. Looks like you might be using a Bach #5 mouthpiece, with a King
3B. I use a Bach #5 with a King 2B (circa 1965). I get somewhat the same thing in the upper register.
However, I think "relax and pinch". The lip muscles clamp on the airstream, and the air is trying to
force the lips open, a la Glenn Dodson. This works in the middle and lower registers also. Are you a classically trained trombonist?

I'm a professional musician who just started playing trombone about 6 weeks ago. I'm coming along very well with the rubank book, but I'm having a difficult time getting anything higher than an F. That's f two lines in a space above staff in bass clef. I'm using a blessing 6.5 Al or a Conn 3, however the effect is still the same nothing higher than an app without extreme struggle. Is there a different mouthpiece I could use that would be better for this or do I just need to practice more?
Without hearing you play at all, I would say you probably just need more time. I am curious, do you play any other brass instruments? It takes a long time to develop the specific musculature around your lips and mouth to play any brass instrument.
Try glissing up to that F, then when it feels super strong, play that F out in 6th position and start glissing up 1 half step at a time. Do this every day or at least every time you practice. You will eventually build up the strength!
The 6.5 AL is already a small enough mouthpiece and is great for high trombone playing. I would not recommend going any smaller than that.

I can’t play D on the 6th octave, and the song I am playing requires me to. My lips hurt I can’t reach that.

Am 8th grade varsity and for sum reason when i try to go for high notes its sumtimes growly idk if its because am buzzing wrong,not blowing enough air or not making the hole small enough it is frustrating but i will keep on trying PLUS sometimes am motivated and when i realize i cant do it i get unmotivated and not want to do it anymore
Hmmm... if you are hearing a growly sound it could be a few things. Maybe you are closing off your throat as you get higher and cutting off the airstream? Make sure you get a big breath and keep your throat open. Once you have that, try out the O to E idea I talked about in this video. Also - make sure there is no air leaking at the sides of the mouthpiece. Hopefully this helps a bit. Keep at it, as with all things, it takes time 😊

@@leonardohernandez935 that’s great to hear! Just keep practicing and listen to your teachers! Taking private lessons is a great way to get better faster. Ask you band director if they know any local trombone teachers. Or online lessons are an option these days too.

I've been watching a few "trombone teachers" in the last couple of days, because I'm recording a hobby collaboration that *should* feature a trombone and I have no clue about brass instruments.
So I wanted to know what a trombone could do.
So far all of these technique teaching videos are sometimes pretty far off pitch, is this because you're concentrating on the technique itself?
This is something I noticed pretty quickly, most of the notes that are reached quickly or played in riffs, like you demonstrate, are noticably off pitch.
It'm sure it's not an issue of "440 vs 432", the same notes are randomly flat or sharp.
Is this normal, in other words are you aware of pitch issues while you make a teaching video? Is that something you hear while playing?
It's just that I expected "teachers" in classical instruments to demonstrate things pitch perfect, and if they noticed a mistake they would mention it, but none of the videos I watched so far have mentioned pitch like that.
In my case, the player sent me some rough demo tracks and thought them to be fine in regards to pitch, but all of them were far off between -30 to +60 cents.
Are there some underlying complicated pitch mechanics in trombones that a normal modern musician without classical instrument experience would not think of?

Hey there! That's cool to hear you want to include trombone in your collaboration. When you say "off pitch" what are you referring to? I am just curious what tuning system you are using. A=440Hz or something different?
I do not have perfect pitch. For me, pitch is relative. I tune my notes based on the ensemble I am playing with. I have played in groups that tune to 442, 441, 440 and even 432 so the tuning can change based on that. Also, when I play by myself like this, I am not super focused on the pitch as you said. Usually, I just go with my ears. I am more focused on my lighting, recording, editing, video production, teaching, script etc.
In regards to your experience where the trombone player was off pitch, I am curious, did they have anything to listen to while they recorded? When I have made multitrack recordings or collaborations I find it helpful to have a midi track to listen to as a pitch reference for the first part being recorded. After that, each added part listens to the parts previously recorded so they can tune their notes accordingly. Also, most trained instrumentalists use Just Intonation and not Equal Temperament. Meaning, the notes can change pitch based on what chord or key they are in. (This is a whole rabbit hole you can dive down!)
There are so many different factors that can affect the tuning on a trombone (or any brass instrument). On trombone it is not the horn that makes the pitch, it is the player. Air support and embouchure (how the mouth is placed on the mouthpiece) can affect the pitch. So can the temperature of the room, or the placement of the slide - the trombone is like a giant tuning slide!

I have a tuner running in my DAW, and all my software playbacks are routed internally in my interface (18i20) to send to a loopback.
In your video you were both sharp and flat a couple of cents according to the tuner, that's why I asked. (the other teachers I watched where actually pretty far in between notes, not even a question of different tuning ^^)
Yes, I thought that accomplished players like you would use different tunings based on the entire group, that makes perfect sense.
If you were to play in a group that did a "simple" song in C, in a 440Hz, would you be technically able to play all notes perfectly on pitch? Or could there be issues regarding different octaves?
"...Just Intonation and not Equal Temperament.." oh my! That is truly a rabbit hole, I'm aware haha.
In the case of my player not being on pitch, my gues is that it's more a matter of being rusty, he started about 15 years ago, but plays only occasionally with a small amateur orchester and he hasn't played much since the lockdowns.
Over the last two weeks I gave him a few tips and ideas to record (he never recorded music, especially at home) and he has improved a lot, both in pitch and "color" of produced notes, I don't know what you call it..how the overall sound quality is, mids, treble, darkness, brightness, aside from pitch.
Would that be timbre, color, ..?
Also, he used a trombone sound muffling pickup (it makes the trombone virtually silent, even at full velocity, but produces a nice recording) for a few of the demo recordings, I assume that shifts the entire resonance and tuning because of how the trombone is built?

If I was playing in a group doing a simple song in C major - I should be able to play all the notes on pitch (according to where they are in the chord) based on what I was hearing around me. Playing unaccompanied, or by myself would be more difficult, it might take a little practice to get "perfect" but it's definitely doable.
That makes total sense if your trombone player used a sound muffling pickup. Was it a Yamaha silent brass? Whenever you put any kind of mute inside the bell of the trombone, it affects the pitch significantly! That could have definitely been what you were hearing.

I think it is dangerous asking students to think downstream as they go higher as the temptation is to over do it. More importantly is to think simple. Less volume of air but at a faster speed by pushing from the abdominal muscles but remaining relaxed. Your throat tends to do weird things when you stop your notes in the high register. Why end them like that?
I’ve been playing trumpet for 30+ years, practice every day, and despite several teachers along the way still haven’t managed to extend my range by a lot. I also have just about every trumpet instruction book that’s been published. Now we have the TH-cam crowd on top. When you say push from the abdominal muscles and relax I could tear what’s left of my hair out!!! I have heard this so many times but to me it is stating two contradictory things in the same sentence and I have never found it helps.

Great comment, Cem! Thanks for sharing, I definitely agree. I had a teacher that would always say, "Everything comes back to the breath". With my students, I find that breathing solves a lot of their problems.

Ich bin sehr schlecht im Englisch wie auch im Spielen hoher Töne, dennoch habe ich einige Inspirationen mitgenommen und hoffe nun, die höheren Töne zu treffen. Es ist nicht einfach, nach über 40 Jahren wieder anzufangen, aber es macht Spaß. Ich würde jederzeit seriös weitere Hilfen und Tipps in Anspruch nehmen, wenn dies möglich wäre.
