Keith may have only gotten to middle schooler trombonist, but he was 100% that middle schooler trombonist who everyone knew was the best and was going to keep playing the trombone forever.
We had a saxophone who was like that. I live in a very small and shitty town where our school "band" consists of about 35 kids at max and 4 at minimum none of which wanna be there, and this kid came from California with at least half his life dedicated to instruments. He quit our band a year after he joined and apparently he does gigs lol

I’ve taught elementary music for over a decade, and was so impressed by your talents as a teacher. I hope you can make teaching your full time profession, in whatever capacity; you have a marvellous gift that would only benefit the children around you.
Dude can’t believe you got make a video with them. His chops really failed him a bit, my band teacher makes me play a couple of low notes so that blood comes back to my lips. I did not expect for him to play sooooooo sooooo good.
Everyone is saying how similar Keith and Chris look so similar, but can we just talk about how hard Keith worked on this? And how WELL he pulled it off? I have so much respect for brass players already, because the weight of the instrument would already be something I’d struggle with, let alone standing there for hours to practice. But now? It’s just increased tenfold. He went from knowing nothing to being able to serenade us with a beautiful piece in 30 days, which just goes to show that NOTHING is stopping you from achieving your own personal goals. If you wanna learn how to play the guitar, do it! If you wanna learn how to speak Spanish, do it! Learning is how we all come together as people, and the end result is magical ❤️
Knowing nothing? He was a horn player all through university. Switching between brass instruments is like switching between guitar and bass; the basics and feel are nearly identical
@@andreigolovik3047 Actually at the beginning of the video he expressed that this is the only bass instrument he’s struggled with because it’s differed compared to what he’s played, and it’s why he chose it, because he knew it wouldn’t be easy. It’s not nearly identical, as I’m sure a trombone player wouldn’t be able to just pick up and play a French horn solo in a blink of an eye. Also, please remember it took him 30 days of practice to be able to do what he did, and i really doubt he only practiced for thirty minutes a day. He put in a lot of effort and time to get where he was at the end of the video, so no, it’s not easy. He started from knowing nothing about that specific instrument, and even stated that, and grew to be able to play a beautiful piece in thirty days, and that is a very daunting task. Edit; at 0:59 he even states “I have no idea how to play that thing, it’s got no valves”
fun fact, the trombone actually is one of the *lighter* brass instruments since it's essentially just one big hollow tube. Instruments like the tuba or baritone tend to be heavier bc a) there's more pipe to them and b) the valves (in my experience) tend to add on extra weight. also if you're lazy (although it's poor posture to do so and it's bad for your airflow if you're practicing big sound) you can sort of cross your legs and rest the bell on your knee when practicing to improve endurance
As a music education major who plays trombone: my entire degree path is focused on finding ways to explain this stuff without sounding vaguely sexual and the truth is it cannot be done ✅
Music stands are the WORST. Like- who invented them and why are they not sturdy??? At that point, just memorize the music. A music stand puts you through so much more PAIN
@@i_dont_really_know_anymore In over 40 years of playing piano, I have never managed to memorise a single piece. I can't play by ear either, so if I don't have sheet music in front of me, I'm basically back to beginner status.
@@stitchgroover and that's my argument for why sheet music reading isn't as great as it's cracked up to be. I think a truly great musician should be able to read music and play without it. (Not that I have the right to judge, between not having the opportunities and my impatience, the only musicality I have is my voice, so honestly anyone who can play an instrument has done a good job.)
@@stitchgroover I can’t blame you I guess. I have awful memory. In fact, as time goes on and as you start to play harder pieces, it starts to become so much harder to memorize. Especially with 40 years of piano playing and not being able to memorize. But once you can FORCE yourself to memorize, you start to get the hang of it!
As a musician, him learning this in a month is really impressive. His tone, range, and pitch was incredible for only 30 days. The vibrato as well blew me away. I too play the trombone. Not my primary instrument, but a beautiful one to play nevertheless. Bravo!
His starting point was from playing french horn already but it is incredibly impressive nonetheless, just some of the things he knows from already playing brass. Still wouldn’t be easy at all but it’d feel impossible doing it in 30 days but having had no experience with any brass instruments
I don't play and instrument but that's because I didn't have the resolve Keith does, so it's definitely impressive! Albeit, Keith can play other instruments unlike me...
keith playing the trombone almost perfectly after only 30 days is amazing hes literally better than the only 2 trombonists in my highschool band who have been playing for months to years
@@roguelites5225 Well that explains it. Trombone is so much easier than horn when it comes to embouchure (not so much picking and moving to notes in multiple positions).
I think this is what the Try Guys are all about! Trying to do something, learning and showing progress. I'm very proud of Keith admitting that the first piece was too ambitious for now, but didn't give up entirely. He did so well!
@@lost_in_here248 I think so, but he switched to a degree in “Theatre and Dance” if I recall. I only remember what degree he does have thanks to their ballet video from 4 years ago 🤣
You found the best person in the world to teach and support your trombone journey. Great job Keith. @classicaltrombone, stop stealing French horn players.
I thought this was going to be a typical humorous try guys video but this was a lovely change of pace. I love that it was taken seriously mad respect to Keith. I went to school for music so it’s nice to see music being appreciated. Keith did WAY better than the average high schooler 😧
Hi, Keith! We would have been happy to be in your video at Bertrand's Music if you had said what you were doing! We were being super cautious about masking and capacity in our tiny store when you came in! Congratulations on achieving your goal--you are an inspiration!
I think it’s adorable that Keith and Hughie seemed so nervous for the recital considering they are both professional musicians. It reminded me of my recitals, except I didn’t like doing them and wasn’t as good.
Is there any update as to the progress on this series? I'm sure many band kids are dying to see Keith trying to learn their instruments. If this continued, it would get lots of love from the music community.
The moment Keith mentioned the “Essential Elements” book my brain whipped me back to being in my high school orchestra and the music room being littered with these books.
I remember it too when I studied jazz as an elective but fuck I was so horrible in that class & I’m so thankful they had like 2-3 other clarinetists who were incredibly skilled and I just played really quietly except for like two or three songs that I actually knew 😂 luckily I was fine when we did theory and when we did improv which was mainly what we were graded on but I felt so fkn inadequate then lol aside from one girl, everyone else in my class were each in multiple bands/orchestras and i never showed up lol and then her and I would spend time together but then she started skipping that class so I was left to be shite on my own 😩
There's this expectation that any content Keith puts out has to be funny but this is straight up beautiful... the dedication, the ambition, the effort and the emotion?? Aptly named beautiful Keith
Fully agreed...I think his former days in “show biz” outside of the internet show here, because the constant need for “perfection” is a very real thing for live performance artists.
As a 6 year Tubist in high school, I’m very impressed on how he did, his notes were on point and that goes on to show that he did a lot of progress throughout the 30 days
okay but literally his tone and pitch accuracy is so surprisingly good, and the vibrato on the sustained notes was even and not erratic…. He successfully played through phrases with genuinely decent dynamics. I am INCREDIBLY impressed
the Try Office members literally looked like they were all tearing up/very moved by Keith's recital & I have to say I was right there with them - you did fantastic Keith!!! now go ice your lips
I was so nervous for his recital but hearing that first phrase I was like OH MY GOD. he did so well, and if Keith can learn the trombone in 30 days, anything is possible.
As a flutist, I hope he tries the flute so bad and every woodwind instrument actually since those will probably be more challenging given that he already has brass instrument experience. I’m so impressed with this though and excited for the prospect of this being a new series for him!
If he needs percussion lessons I can help. Got a BA in it from a conservatory. While at school they had classes to teach you the other instruments (if you wanted to be a teacher). I wanted to take all of them but only got the winds class as an elective. I had a surprisingly hard time with clarinet but was ok with flute, sax, & surprisingly oboe & bassoon. The only way I got a noise out of the clarinet was if I did the double armbushure (I can’t spell) like the oboe instead of the normal single one.
Keith is the instruments as Eugene is to dance. I hope Keith keeps learning instruments to showcase. Also it might be fun to do a video where Keith try’s to teach instruments to the guys.
In case you don't understand: This was really, really good! The dynamics, the vibrato, the overall control and the colour of your notes .... It was sooo good!
Right? I was so surprised. I didn't know what to expect but vibrato was not one of them, and neither were those subtle dynamics. That was _really_ good for a piece he crammed in a few days.
I sang serenade through the leaves (actually Schubert's Schwanengesang) for my final jury in college and it made me tear up. The piece's lyrics are so beautiful sung in German
As a musician this is damn impressive. As a violinist I don't think I could learn cello this this good in 30 days (which might be apples and oranges to compare but still). Keith you have astounding musicality and expression in your playing. I wasn't familiar with your musical background at all until now, but bravooooo another reason to stan Keith
i was a cellist and switched to viola (freshman year of high school) and didn’t make as much progress as he did here in 3 months of viola. this was crazy 🤯
i'm an oboist and i had to learn mellophone (marching french horn) so i could do marching band and i agree that it's really impressive! learning a new instrument is HARD. i think it definitely helped a lot that he already knew a brass instrument but i was still really surprised at how well he played!
@@eliaspratt8690 I play viola! *Learning double bass* "Eh not insanely difficult" *Learning cello* "So wait.. Even with violin, like.. I'm not allowed to play with my pinky because I always over reach as a violist 🤣 Keith is a legend.
I know. I’ve been playing violin for three years myself and I don’t know if it’s because I’m learning through a public school curriculum or if I’m just bad, but I can barely do vibrato.
@@adeviantsponge7328 No you're not bad, you're learning! I didn't start learning vibrato for a few years myself and it took another few years to perfect, and I was in private lessons. It will come if you persist, I promise! Sometimes it can be harder or take longer to hone technique in group settings. Private lessons, if you can afford it, can really give that one on one coaching, but if you keep trying and practicing regardless, you'll get there, I promise. It's worth it. Best of luck. ❤
I hope Keith knows how inspirational he is to young kids in band and theater. Arts programs are always less popular than athletics and scholarly programs in academics, so they often get looked over and sometimes completely crumble all together. Keith showing his love for music like this just makes me really hopeful for the younger people watching 💖
Rather than less popular I think it's important to consider what's needed to get started. Outside of a school setting, athletics are often cheap to get involved with (though some require more equipment than others), whereas with music there's the cost of the instrument and for most guidance is needed to fix mistakes and beginner tips before they become bad habits.
I never had to purchase an instrument while in band. Never spent a single cent. I was very, very lucky that my school had the funding to buy their own instruments. This isn't the case everywhere, obviously, which is why it's important to fund these programs just as much as others.
It's not so much having to purchase things for school. My point was that interest often starts outside of school. If you want to continue after school you'll need to purchase it. If you have a strong interest you're probably considering it before the opportunity arises in school. Sports are something that's often inclusive or easy to start. Music can have harder point of entries. Of course I do have a problem with how some schools are obsessed with sports scholarships but that's a different problem.
@@wombat4583 The one thing to consider though is that the majority of HS and younger athletes don't continue sports beyond HS either. There is certainly a failing with music education to help equip kids to become lifelong musicians but that is not unique to the arts. Our society definitely idolizes sports in ways that we don't see in other areas. Sports also do cost a ton of money, especially if you want to get good at it (just like anything). But from a purely school-education standpoint, there is a similar cost between sports and arts for the casual learner. You are definitely right that interests start outside of school though. Most artistic friends I know were supported in that and encouraged by family members, same with sports students. Overall, what I'd like to see more of is holistic education and experiences with young people; knowing they can play sports while also engage in arts (and that BOTH can continue after formal schooling).
I’m so freakin’ pissed off that this doesn’t have a million more views. This was impressive. People don’t understand the discipline it takes to stick with an instrument. They just want the instant gratification of likes, favorites, and followers… great performance Keith
As a music/band teacher(and trombonist), this legitimately warms my heart and I hope inspires people to learn something new and realize the reward of hard work and practice over time! Great job Keith! 👏 Hope you keep practicing and that in the future I see a giant recital of you playing all the instruments!
No lie, I started tearing up during the performance. Performing is already such a vulnerable thing, but to have shared his music with us after only spending a month with it, I can't even begin to fathom. And he did SUCH A GREAT JOB! Very moving video, thank you
As a violinist, who played this piece on the violin, I am very impressed. The mistakes are minor. It was well played. I swear, he did that in fricking 30 days...
“I realize I’m starting to sound real sexual with what I’m saying” You never realize how dirty the terminology for learning an instrument is until you’re an adult. As a string musician I can think of several: our instruments have F-holes, our instruments have G-strings, we make different notes by doing different fingerings, and I’m sure there are others. 😂
I just remembered keith saying in a podcast ep that he gets sad when he's not mentioned in videos and it made my heart sad because keith - you are my favorite try guy. When I saw this video I knew it would be good, but it blew me away. I loved this so much and your performance was absolutely amazing! ps i'm going to comment more often how great keith is
Seriously, same, this video was amazing! And Keith is great. I really love his energy and his voice, whether he's calm or hyped up, he always gives off pleasant vibes
He said he wants to learn every instrument from a high school band, I wanna see him learn clarinet and rage over the reed then have to learn sax and rage over having to forget everything about clarinet
just trying to get the reed to a pliable form and then break it trying to put the holder on 5 minutes before a concert. My band director stressed having 3 or 4 reeds started "just in case".
As a person who has been playing trombone for about 4-5 years, Keith’s first impression of playing the trombone is like how everyone else’s thoughts about how I play it lol
Keith tries the most. I feel like the other three try guys don't if they think they won't be good at it or just aren't seriously interested in something as a hobby...they're more likely to just work the jokey angle and not truly try. Keith makes a lot of jokes, but he also always actually tries his best. It's so nice to see when something great comes out of it, like this!
While u r definitely entitled to ur own opinion, I think they all work hard to put our their best work and try as hard as they can in vids. Eugene is an incredible dancer, athlete, and director so he works hard on vids related to that. Ned always goes the extra mile (he isn't called full throttle fulmer for no reason). He also does most of the financial stuff for the try guys. Zach struggles with athletics bcus of his autoimmune disease but he always tries his hardest anyways. He also eats a lot of spice and dairy for vids even tho it causes him pain. While I agree keith is extremely talented, u don't have to put down the other guys to complement him
@@maggieann5569 Here to help boost the positivity! We appreciate each guy for their own skills. While it's fine to have a "favorite" there's no need to put the others down
Tbh I think we never give Keith enough credit for his musical talents. One of the things I loved about the movie was getting to see more of his process. So this video is a huge treat for me. Keith is so cool
This is a jokey thing but I'm honestly always impressed by his closing songs at the end of the tripod. Idk if you watch it or not but if not it's a quick little improv song that summarizes what they talked about and they're actually pretty good.
Through this video I really actually felt my soul go back in time to learning choir in high school and how much joy it brought me. I didn't expect to be so moved by this but I really am deeply moved. Well done, Keith. 💖
This video is great because it shows Keith trying something that he is familiar with but still learning, and we can actually see him in his element. Not to mention the performance was lovely to listen to. Way to go Keith!!! YOU DID AMAZING!!!
I'll agree when I see him play the flute. That shits hard when your lips are used to playing brass instruments! Also I just want this to be a whole series
I am stunned! I played the trombone throughout Middleschool (braces finally ended my "career") and I could not manage in 2 years what Keith accomplished in 30 days. And what tone! Bravo! I was pretty good with the spit valve however.
I like how Zach is the only other Try Guy to show up. Like I imagine just off-camera, there's chairs marked off for Ned and Eugene that are just sitting there empty and that's a really funny image to me
Even more importantly than the technical feat, he played very musically and sensitively, and really committed to beautiful phrasing and dynamic contrast. That’s the stuff that really matters in a performance! Bravo Keith!
You can tell he's a musician just by how he knows how to put feeling into it. Even technical brilliance can't teach how to emote through your instrument - you have to learn how to put that stank on it.
Keith's progress is extremely impressive for such a sort time period! You can definitely see the benefit of his pretty extensive background in French horn--his understanding of brass instruments and musical performance already gets him a leg up. But he's surprisingly in-tune for his first time playing a slide instrument and has a great vibrato
As a high school trombone player, I’m surprised he has not tried to play the USSR anthem or make race car sounds like a true high schooler. Trombones are weird like that.
I guess it's a subconscious thing, Keith would have gone through all those trombone or brass playing tutorials, and when he saw someone similar to him, he would linger a bit longer by then.
Tbh not a single high school trombonist I know could've played that first piece that he gave you. You had beautiful tone AND a vibrato??? Better than 95% of high school trombones lol
As the first chair trombone at my school, I agree. I don't think I would have been able to play it. Maybe with enough time but it wouldn't be easy at all and probably not the best quality. His tone tho is amazing. Better then mine.
Yeah. That's the type of song you have to commit to over time already being at high-school level, not beginner like our friend Keith. I'd struggle playing that for awhile even as a second chair trombone at my highschool.
There's nothing more uplifting than watching a passionate individual try, fail, try, and succeed at something they are new to. Really helps those of us with beginners anxiety.
as a trombone player it filled my heart when he said "ive always wanted to play the trombone. trombone is the coolest brass. its so dope." also he started out on an f trigger trombone. most beginners start on tenor.
It's all about the breath support. If he's blowing from his throat and tensing it up, he'll definitely turn red in 15 minutes. If he's breathing from his stomach, maybe not.
As a trombonist who is in highschool and has been playing for 5 years, I can say that the beginning of the video is accurate to what it is like to first play trombone
I was going to make a joke about how betrayed I felt as a French Hornist, but I'm so proud of you. You put so much work into learning this instrument, and I hope my band students can learn something from you. You sounded absolutely beautiful! Great job
12-year full-time professional trombonist here: Really great work, you exceeded expectations! Congratulations! I think this video will inspire a lot of people to pick up an instrument and give music a go. Its amazing what can be acheived with a little bit of dedication, a good teacher and regular practice. I thought it was a very musical performance, and I hope you continue with music and the trombone into the future.
We need this to be a series. I WANT MORE!!! This totally inspired me to play the flute again. I played for 5 years. And then my last year of high school someone stole my flute. I kinda just gave up after that. But I’ll be buying a new one this week. This video made me realize how much I miss it. Now I’m inspired. Maybe I’ll pick up another instrument too who knows. Thank you Keith!!!!!
As a trombonist, I appreciate this so much, lol. Also his starting tone was so good and I love his dedication to learning this. And yeah, it’s as fun to play as Keith makes it look 😂
I don't know about Virtuoso, but knowing many instruments is a very impressive skill. Virtuosos are the best in what they do, you master an instrument and then go on to be a virtuoso.
as a former high school trombone player who learned from the same methods book and also suffered through learning David and never ever getting that high Bb, this truly warmed my heart and might be my new favorite try guys vid. Keith should be SUPER proud of himself and he might've inspired me to pick up my trombone after 4 years!! Bravo

the fact that 90% of keith’s notes were in tune after only playing for 30 days is incredible

@@stitchgroover and that's my argument for why sheet music reading isn't as great as it's cracked up to be. I think a truly great musician should be able to read music and play without it. @@stitchgroover I can’t blame you I guess. I have awful memory. In fact, as time goes on and as you start to play harder pieces, it starts to become so much harder to memorize.

“I realize I’m starting to sound real sexual with what I’m saying”
You never realize how dirty the terminology for learning an instrument is until you’re an adult. As a string musician I can think of several: our instruments have F-holes, our instruments have G-strings, we make different notes by doing different fingerings, and I’m sure there are others. 😂

As a trombonist, I appreciate this so much, lol. Also his starting tone was so good and I love his dedication to learning this. And yeah, it’s as fun to play as Keith makes it look 😂
I never knew Keith was a MUSICAL VIRTUOSO IM SO IMPRESsED
ure heree
I don't know about Virtuoso, but knowing many instruments is a very impressive skill. Virtuosos are the best in what they do, you master an instrument and then go on to be a virtuoso.
He played French horn in highschool! Honestly, it never goes away. I play all woodwinds and play clarinet til this day (late 20s)
@@sulllivanofficial5478 he played it in college too. he said he did film & music in college (correct me if i am wrong)
@@lucasqin7120 yes! On a French horn scholarship! Almost forgot about that.
as a former high school trombone player who learned from the same methods book and also suffered through learning David and never ever getting that high Bb, this truly warmed my heart and might be my new favorite try guys vid. Keith should be SUPER proud of himself and he might've inspired me to pick up my trombone after 4 years!! Bravo
sure bud
Keith, you are an inspiration for every, and all bands in school right now in these Try Guy-ing times! I play trumpet, but in spirit of your efforts, I thought why not try it too? My trumpet range increased so much now! Thanks for the inspiration Keith!
