The age thing is just starting to weigh on me and I wonder how many good years I have as I seem to be slowing down just a bit. Hate that I can't do some of the more strenuous hikes I like and can't run 10k with my wife. I like that you seem to be working on sorting your own life out instead of relying on a woman to fix you like so many guys. I didn't settle down until I was in my 40s and had already lived inThailand for 20 years. Just go at your own pace and don't listen too much to the guys who give advice. By the way, I turn 70 this year and still don't know what I want to do when I grow up.
Good luck. I turned 70 last week, moved to Chiang Mai 2 years ago after my wife died. I never had a plan. It was just what I wanted to do and where I want to be.
Wise words as always mate. I get a lot more aches and pains nowadays, but still life in ol' dog yet. I'll hope I can make it to 70, long way to go yet. 🤣
It's not easy taking on some else's kids and investing time and money into them, your happy were you are if it's right for you, then that's it.
Remember if you want that retirement visa you need 800,000 Thb baht about , £18,000 in your bank to apply for it, do what makes you happy Watne, I also work in a crappie factory, and will stay and save 3 more years before coming over to Thailand permanently, I'm bailing out early just can't wait for my pension in 5 years time.

The goal is to go Full time Thailand before i turn 45 and get me a couple of rental property's to keep myself busy while living in Thailand.

Age hits all of us...but happiness and wisdom makes you feel better about it.
I turned 55 whilst living in Chiang Mai for that year. But by that point I had the wisdom to know what to do to make the best of the next few years so that I have a solid pension. The dream became real to me after spending that year in Thailand.
I headed back home in Feb 2020 (as the pandemic was hitting), secured fantastic work-from-home employment (best of my life), and now it's enjoying the minutes until I can book that flight in a few years. I am using every resource to improve my health, both physical/mental/financial and happy doing it. See ya in 2029...permanently!
That's right Beverly, I'm happy to have some wisdom and life experience, that's worth it's weight in gold. 2029 will soon come, I'm sure I'll still be here 🤣

I had a moment of doubt after my last trip about moving to Thailand in the near future and thought about not doing it. As soon as those thoughts started creeping in I became super depressed. That's when I knew for sure that whatever the hurdles may be I must move to Thailand. That's where my heart is and nothing would change that. All doubts are gone now and plans are set. I know without doubt that it's the right choice.
I lived in Chiang Mai for 8 years, loved it until my wife died. Had to come back to the UK, I've tried the Philippines but didn't like it. Back in UK again but the draw of Thailand is getting strong again.

Your honesty is what, and I think I can say this, WE have come to expect. You say what we all feel, what we all go through. Hate to break it to you, but you are retired - ostensibly you are not really working. You will always have to do something to fill that void, albeit gardening, golf, fishing, etc., for you it’s vlogging. You are surviving admirably so in a foreign country of your doing. A good vlog 🤘 you are correct about your cost of living video. It’s your spending habits, however we all get something out of how and what things cost a month in Thailand. Everyone’s spending is different but we can gauge what it would be like and compare. I never get tired of up to date cost of living vlogs 🤘🤘🇦🇺

Great vlog many of us who have been lucky enough to visit Thailand especially China Mai fall in love with the place, being there on holiday vs living I expect is very different, however my aim is to retire there. I was in CM December last year its a place were I feel completely at ease peaceful I hope it doesn’t change much with the ever increasing visitors keep up the good work Wayne

Im going to Chang Mai for 5 days ,a couple of weeks undecided and finishing up in Hau Hin for a week
Just a recce to see if i fancy it for longer or for ever or i dont like it at all

You're right Wayne. You back home and you get a quick reality check about just how good Thailand is. Both returned to Melbourne for 10 & 6 days, as soon as you get off that plane, you can't wait to go back to Thailand

I've been here 19 years now in Hua Hin, I still love Thailand, it's different living here as opposed to coming for a holiday.
I'm missing Hua Hin, I'm hopefully coming back down soon. Very true mate, 2 totally different lifestyles.

always good to think about the whole moving and retiring situation before you commit. Dont want to be caught out 5 years on with absolutely nothing left both in Thailand and back home. Im going to 40 soon and already making that journey on relocating once I get closer to ur current age Wayne. Its a massive life changing event. can never be too careful.. For now though, go grab a green tea and take it easy man, take it easy.

Wow - lots of guys my age on here (I’m 71) that sound exactly like me!! Happy as a clam without schedules or plans - I can honestly say I am happier now at 71 than I have ever been in my life, and living here in Chiang Mai has a LOT to do with this.

Yes Wayne good to listen to you in your patch , I would love to come for a longer spell , instead of 3 to4 weeks lots of things to consider need to sell my house get rid of everything in it , at the moment paying the bills while away being 73 and retired 😅

I came out permanent last year and not looked back, currently living happy in Jomtien, it will all fall into place mate, don’t overthink it, retire as soon as you can, life is short buddy

Wayne, your videos inspire us! Life abroad isn't always light and fluffy like many TH-camrs like to portray. Your videos give us a good idea of real life scenarios. Keep up the good work! My wife and I are 52 and we just spent 3 months in Thailand/Vietnam/Cambodia before Christmas - we really fell in love with that part of the world! 1 month in Vietnam, 1 month in Chiang Mai, 1 week in Cambodia, then 1 month in Kabi/Phuket and Bangkok. We're already planning to go back for longer in 2025. We're playing with the idea of a longer term stay but grandkids could be coming in a couple years and my mom is in nursing care at the age of 88 - it might be hard to leave home for more than 6 months. Plus I still work full time (self-employed) - my clients are all across N.America and the time zone issue was a little difficult, but manageable. Still, I'd love to stay in Thailand for a much longer time - maybe someday!

Hiya buddy, I completely understand and get what you say and mean. I'm doing another visit to Thailand end of this month. When you decide to move to another country it's a huge step, both exciting and scary, if you have some sort of income behind you and you can manage then great, I'm fortunate to have a good pension, and I started up a little online side job, along with a backup if that doesn't work! I was planning my retirement for 5 years, and planning my move to Thailand for 2 years, 1 more year to go, hopefully 😁
I currently live in the UK, but it's got to that point where it doesn't feel like home anymore, that's why I've been planning everything. Great vids by the way, stay strong healthy and positive my friend 👍😁

As you mentioned it seems you have to decide whether to live in the West or East. I lived in Thailand for a few years and wanted to stay there for much longer. However, I felt it was difficult to make it there as a farang. I did apply to jobs within Multinational companies I found on the BKK Post. Maybe I just needed more time and sometimes more luck!

When you first get there, of course everything is fresh, discovering new things, few years in it becomes a routine. I think you need to live somewhere else in south east Asia. Maybe try nam for a while. The beauty is that Chiang Mai will always be there.
Correct, living somewhere is no different from anywhere. Life is good here though. Maybe back to Nam for a while, one of many options.
Haha I really relate to the “12 days back in the UK was enough” thing. I spent 8 months travelling around Thailand and Vietnam last year, 2 of those were spent in CM as I completely fell in love with the place.
I came back to UK in December and my gosh, going from months of tropical paradise to peak British winter overnight is something else 😅 not to mention how dire things seem to have gotten in UK generally - economically/politically/culturally/spiritually etc. It really feels like the country (and the west in general) is going through the worst time in living memory, with not much scope for meaningful improvement anytime soon. Also, pretty much every aspect of my UK/home life went to shit long before in a seemingly unsalvageable way, and I’ve not got much enthusiasm to start over tbh.
I lasted about 2 months back in UK then went off to check out Italy and Croatia. It’s been an improvement but obv it’s gonna be similar vibes everywhere in Europe right now. So naturally I’ve been reminiscing SE Asia (particularly CM) a lot. My original plan was to go back there in Jan but then I learned about burning season.
My only issue with this lifestyle is that I’m not great at making friends whist travelling, so I get kinda lonely. I’m 36 (M) and not interested in any of that farang party scene stuff anymore (or just befriending any degen type foreigners in SE Asia as I’ve had some bad experiences with this). I have a UK salary job that I work remotely, so mostly wanna focus on this and getting my (new) life together. But ofc it would be nice to have some travel buddies with a similar mindset/mission.
I’ve watched a lot of your vids and you seem like the kind of person I’d like to hang out with on my travels. May I hit you up if I’m CM later this year?

@@WalkAboutWayne Yea man, if you go right to the peak of the temple area (up the steps to the statue) around 5pm it’s a pretty epic panoramic. You also basically get it to yourself as it’s a bit out of town. Tweechol Botanical Garden on the road to Saket is worth a look too.
I just watched your vid “Why I Picked Peace in Thailand Over Partying” and we seem to have quite a similar background - UK rave scene / DJ’ing etc (although my era was late 00’s / early 10’s) - eventually had the same epiphany moment about that life lol.
Good to hear you’re so zen with where you’re at these days. I like how you described getting more of a bang out sober life in Thailand today than party life in UK back then.

I had to wait to retire, but I'm "sorted" as you put it. I have enough emergency fund to cover any outpatient needs, and enough income to get inpatient insurance. Set up with a couple pensions. Retirement here I come!

Hi Wayne, Due to my own health issues and several of my coworkers dying soon after retiring at 67, I decided that I would retire at 62. I realized that it wasn't going to be financially possible for me to retire at that age in the US. I did a ton of research on affordable retirement destinations, visa options, weather, safety, and access to good medical care. Thailand ended up being on the top of my list and I moved here last year. While it's a long way from the US, I am able to go back a couple of times a year to see family and friends. I feel comfortable here and consider it home.

I was surviving in pai nicely on £ 900 a month and that was nice living. I scrimped on my place to stay because I was never in. I rented a Cheep moped and spent the rest on nice food in restaurants. And day trips out seeing things Strangest thing was I hardly spent any money on booze. The hot weather literally stopped me drinking alcohol. I love north Thailand and will be back in June and hope I never leave 👍

Wayne , I’m Australian. Married a Thailand woman 19 years ago , we spent 17 years working in Australia,
My wife wanted to return to her village and extended family ,
In rural Sukothai, we built a house, I’m on the Australian aged pension,
I’ll probably spend 8 months a year here , the rest in , back in Australia ,
So far all seems good, I’m the only Farang, with in miles , only two people in the village speak English,
So far it’s ok for me

I would say you will not find a good reason to go back to UK 🇬🇧 because in europe it is becoming more and more difficult or worse to live.
I will go to retirement end of 2024 and move to Thailand 🇹🇭 for sure!

I think a trip back home is probably in order. I don’t think you’ve been back in the three years since I started following you. Nothing makes you more certain you made the right move quite like reminding yourself firsthand why you left to begin with (or it may help you decide you want to stay at “home”… unlikely). My plan is to stay in Thailand 6 months out of the year and in the States for 6 months. Whenever doubt creeps in, I just take a look around me or watch the local news. That usually puts me back on track and actually makes me consider living in Thailand for 9 months out of the year instead of 6! 😂
Whatever you choose, best of luck to you! You seem to have your head on straight so I know your decision will be for the best.

You dodged a bullet-i was in a similar situation when I got involved with a single mother here in Australia-she also had 2 young kids from a failed marriage.I ended the relationship after 4.5yrs because of a number of reasons including her becoming lazy & giving up 2 of her 3 part time jobs & relying on my income to pay more of the living expenses.Since then I have completely changed my perception of women in general over the last few years & apart from a couple of casual flings I have largely stayed away from women over here..Now my main focus is building my wealth as much as I can & hopefully retire early & maybe spend 6 months of every year living in thailand 😁

Question Wayne if your planning on retireing in the land of smiles on a pension not the 800 000 over 50 the uk pensy but you haven't worked or lived in the Uk for quite a while will that affect or pension or do they say well done lad here it is even though you haven't worked in the uk for 15 to 20 years were im from tjey changed alot witch i like especially for people who migrate to NZ in there 60 s or a little younger but once 65 get a pension just curious .
Hi Joel, it's not been 15 to 20 years mate, a lot less than that. Also, I'm still paying tax in the UK, so nothings really changed buddy. I have got lots of gaps in my working life though, but I should be ok. Thanks.

Hi Wayne, I don't know what will be the retirement age for you since you are quite young, but don't stop making volunteer class 2 contributions which will go towards your UK state pension and they are not that much, Also one can go back 6 years and make the payments. This way you will have income from UK when you reach the retirement age regardless of where you decide to live. I don't think you will get any pension from Thailand
I still pay tax buddy. I have some gaps in my working life but I should scrape through and get a half decent pension. I've done the 5 year payback before also. It was 5 years when I did it in my 30s. Good to know we can backdate 6 years now. Thanks.
You could start attending a language school. That would go a long way toward getting things sorted. It’s never too late to start. Commit to one year. Then commit to a second year. And so on. 🙂

I "retired" here at 43 back in 2006 thinking I was set up for life.....wrong....2008 crash hit me hard......this is when I should have returned to the workforce. I didn't, I chose to stay with me wife and our very young children.
Bottom line fast forward to 2024, eldest about to complete 2 years of uni and youngest in year 10. Every day is a maths equation....can I afford this, should I buy this, is that necessary......we have got through so far and we live okay but no way extravagant......yeah....should of worked for a few more years, that would have been the sensible thing to do and was even suggested to me by multiple people.
Do I regret my choices? Not really because my youngest wouldn't have been born.

Hi, I hope you can come over to Thailand and get a feel for the place. A few months is a great time frame to get a real feel of the country.
I think the one big problem with retiring in Thailand is what to do about medical care, sure you can get insurance but it gets very expensive once you hit your 70's and 80's. People will say well you can go back to your home country, well what if you arent stable enough to travel?? Unless you are rich enough to self insure...say about 100k USD, which should cover you in a PUBLIC Thai hospital, way more for private, you are pretty much scuppered.
An option im looking at is retiring to a country that provides permanent residence like Portugal. With a permanent residence card you get on the 'free' health care system.
Yes Jeff, medical care is a concern. As you mentioned, the care here is top notch, but theirs nothing like that home medical care. I'm hearing good things about Portugal, seems to be a good place to live.

Thailand seems like a nice place to retire but just like any other retirement one would still need a semi-passive income or large investment portfolio and to be debt free. It's definitely cheaper to retire in Thailand but you probably need a house or much larger apartment than you are currently living in and most likely need expat friends. One can't really go 30+ years of being able to relate to others and fluently communicate to totally depriving yourself of that. I would imagine one of the reasons people start YT channels when being an expat is to just be able to speak/communicate "normally".
It's easy these days to communicate in the mains cities I think, but I agree it does matter to know some of the lingo. Yes, maybe TH-cam is release to have a good old chat, like back home. Thanks.
@@WalkAboutWayne I spent only 6 months in Argentina and upon coming back it was a breath of fresh air being able to fluently converse. Sure some people in Argentina spoke a little English but it was always "am I talking too fast" or "what's the Spanish word for what I am trying to convey". I think it makes a world of difference for mental health to both have expat friends and to be more fluent in the destinations language for long term living plans.
You do you everyone is different, these are just my experiences not suggestions or anything like that.
I'm looking at retiring here but I have to go back to Australia in 2027, because I have to apply for the pension in Australia (stupid rule). I am using an app called TravelSpend to see how much I spend in a month. I think it is a good app. It's been almost a month and I have spent 9000 baht (which includes a 2,400 hospital visit. I got Shingles) So with my rent 14,000 baht I am looking at spending around 23,000 to 24,000 baht (between $980-$1000) a month. Not sure if that is good or not. But I know in Australia, just on rent, I would be paying $500 a week, so definitely better than Australia.

In a nutshell you have to show an income of 65,000 thb per month going into your thai bank account or keep a balance of 800,000 thb based on being over 50 years old for the retirement visa.

There is a reason you’re in Thailand now and not in the UK working in a factory, remember what brought you to Thailand. There is a saying “ wherever I go… there I am”. Retirement is a costly endeavour and If you want to cross your T’s and dot your i’s you better squirrel some money away before officially retiring, from what I understand that’s not the easiest thing to do in the UK due to the increased cost of living. There may be some legal ways to subsidize your costs in Thailand such as housesitting, providing online relocation advise to potential expats, or offering guided Motorcycle tours to English tourists to different locations you have been to in Thailand. If you are where you want to be then do what you need to do within legal boundaries, it requires some effort but not as much a working in a factory… Good luck 🤞

Speaking of a crappy factory job, this Thursday marks the one year anniversary of walking out of mine for the last time, did it for 28.5 years and always knew it was a means to an end. As an American you won't move to Thailand in your 40's, you can't afford to, you have to work or you starve, the exceptions are the young guys who got messed up (physically or mentally) in Iraq or Afghanistan and get the government vheck every month.
That was the best day ever when I left that factory job. I hated it in the new town I was living. Yes, I agree, some people can't come here at a young age.

The problem with hooking up with a single mother is that you have no influence over them, you're not allowed to discipline them, it's pretty tough to stick with it long term, I'm not surprised it didn't work out. I know it sucks but it was for the better (for you anyway). I arrived in Bangkok last night and will be coming up to Chiang Mai in the next couple of weeks. i retired at 55 (wife hated it, thinks its her house to rule) , got to keep yourself busy, anything like exercise, hobbies travel etc etc. i don't know where i will end up, the West is turning to Shite real fast. Body wise get to your ideal weight late 30's and stay there if you are festively Plump and lose weight when you get older the skin does NOT bounce back, ie Man boobs, saggy gut skin, droopy arse cheeks etc etc so get fit and stay trim and tight. Gym or resistance bands at home every 2nd day and lots of walking, swimming, bike riding etc. You don't want a Veranda over the tool shed, ( slang for a fat gut)

They I understand it, to retire in Thailand the Thai authorities need you to show you could draw £370 a week every week, if you needed to. Can you tell us what the minimum amount of money that you’re allowed to retire on in Thailand. According to Thai law.
I think by law (cough cough) it's 65,000 Baht a month minimum.
Requirements are being 50 years old. You don't need to be officially retired somewhere. Being 50 years old is enough.
You need to put 800k Thai baht in a Thai bank account to qualify for the retirement visa OR have proof of a Monthly income of 65k.
But the most important things is that people think you need to be officially retired in your home country... Its not needed. You can call that visa also the 50+ long stay visa 😊
That’s £361.50 a week. The UK old age state pension is £221 a week. So, UK men need a private pension or sell their house or sell their UK house to increase their savings. If a UK man sells his UK house he has made it very difficult to return to the UK as an old man if for any reason he needs to return.
When we love thailand and lived in Thailand for some years, honestly Cambodia or Phillipines in not good, the closer in my opinion is Vietnam.

The trouble is with new tax regulations retirement in Thailand is not a good option. I wouldn't mind living there 3 months at the time if I retire but I will need to check properly B4 retiring; as I do not want to be double taxed on my savings... Would be nice to have an episode regarding new tax regulations in Thailand.

Dude nothing good is happening in england. There are very little opportunities here. With the inflation and low wages and record high rents it feels like you are a hamster on a wheel getting nowhere. Last time I was in Thailand I literally felt Thailand healing me
The only thing that made me come back was covid. I know nothing or no place is perfect but I think you are making the right choice as england is in a right state and Thailand is much more friendly and better run. In Thailand I felt free in england I feel like a slave /hamster on a wheel
