    Nothing like servicing your own car. It feels so rewarding.

      It doesn't have to be that extreme to feel rewarding. As long as you maintain your ride, I bought an R34 off a guy who never really looked after it and he thought it was on it's way out so he sold it to me for next to nothing. 2 years later n I'm still daily driving her. Just knowing how she performs from when I first bought her compared to now, after all the money n work I've put in...that's satisfaction enough for me, and the fact that I didn't pay a mechanic to do any of it either is even more so. Good learning experience, and totally worth the time and effort. You learn to really appreciate them

    just a quick tip for your oil change, always check the oil after you start it as well, because, before you start it the oil isn't flowing around the oil filter yet, after it is started the oil is circulated all around the engine, and oil filter, checking level after starting will be the most accurate level reading

      +maximus9401 It means fill up the oil filter with oil before installing it. You can do it for piece of mind, but it isn't necessary.

    • @connorsmith1332
      @connorsmith1332 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +maximus9401 After you fill it, if you leave it sitting for a bit, the filter will absorb a good amount of the oil so it won't splash out as easy when you're installing it. :)

    • @JonHowes1
      @JonHowes1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Connor - after that happens...I pour more in...let it soak...pour more in, etc. Once it stops absorbing, I top is off to a safe level that I won't spill any and install!

    @Rayrayman111 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Matt another thing you want to do if you have an oil filter that is in the upright position like yours is to fill the filter beforehand that way you're not running air through on the first start up. Some people might say it's pointless but better safe than sorry!

      +Raymond Korang I agree. I always fill my filter up with oil before putting back on. Of course mine is an upside down filter as well. Otherwise once you start your car back up after the filter change the oil level will drop slightly and as a result you have to add a bit more oil since the filter will hold quite a bit depending on it's size.

  • @justinbuice
    @justinbuice 9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    I hate how some cars take an obscure amount of oil like 5.7 quarts (mine takes 6.5). Why can't they just use 5?? that's how oil is sold anyway.

    • @mysteryboyee
      @mysteryboyee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      because they want you to take it to the dealership, as the dealership will have a dispenser of some sort and whats effectively just a giant measuring cup for motor oil, they can put exactly 5.7, or 6.5
      source: work at an oil change shop and we have the same thing here, no way the dealership doesn't have a similar system

    Great video :) Couple notes - it's never a bad idea to 'prefill' that oil filter before screwing it on. Those soak up a LOT of oil and the theory is that is may temporarily starve the engine (until filter is primed). When priming the filter, the filter just keeps absorbing the oil you pour in. Takes about two minutes to saturate the filter element. Also, be sure to always check oil level after letting the car idle/warm-up. It will definitely be below the 'Full' mark that you observed initially. Obviously, priming the filter before-hand reduces how much the level drops when you check it the second time.

    And now here's an instruction for a good oil change....
    - take your car for a quick spin around the block so that the oil is warm but not hot (warm oil flows more easily than cold oil)
    - put a magnet in the oil pan!!!
    - let the oil drain, then clean everything around there, put new bolt in
    - check if any metal cuttings are sticking to the magnet!!!
    - remove the oil filter, then clean everything around there, keep an eye on where the O-ring sits
    - put the O-ring for the new filter on the exact same spot after lubricating it a bit with oil
    - put the new oil filter in
    - fill in the new oil (as much as the manual says)
    - roll down your car to a flat surface
    - start up the engine and let it run for about a minute (the new oil filter is absorbing about 1/2 liter of oil)
    - check the dip stick
    - if needed fill in more oil until it reaches the middle marker
    you're welcome

    @Crab53 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Matt, You need to re-check your oil level again AFTER start up. Oil level will drop on the dipstick due to the oil filter being filled after start-up. Then recheck for leaks again. You did good for the first oil change.

    When changing the oil on my Abarth 500 I never have to go under the car. I drain the oil with an extractor and the paper oil filter is easily accessed near the top of the engine by removing a plastic cap. I'm also a fan of Pennzoil. 5W40 (Euro-Oil) is stupid hard to find in stores and Pennzoil is usually all I have to choose from. It still looks good after many miles and I don't burn off any oil compared to other brands.
    Changing your oil yourself is great because unfortunately most service departments are pretty reckless when driving around your car. I know too many people including myself who has had a car damaged under service care. If you want something done right... DIY. Great video!

    I highly recommend buying and wearing gloves for oil changes. I'm talking about the cheap throw away gloves from NAPA. I have learned to use a long handle 1-inch socket wrench to loosen the drain plug, a plug that for some reason is over-tightened from my local Ford dealership.

    I just wanted to say I'm a fan of your videos just wanted to give pointer to you for future oil changes and that is to "prime" (fill with fresh oil) the oil filter because it is a Eccoboost(turbo) you want to be sure not to starve it of oil that can destroy the turbo. just thought you should know

  • @Drtbiker88
    @Drtbiker88 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this has probably been said already, but the advantage to having a vertical upside down filter is that you can "pre-fill" it with oil before you screw it on. This helps with dry starts and oil pressure will build much faster, otherwise congrats on you're first oil change and something that's a little different than car reviews!

  • @henryd1981

    Here's a good tip: always make sure that the gasket from the old oil filter is not stuck on the car. A few years ago, a dealership changed the oil in my car, but apparently the old oil filter's gasket was stuck on and it ended up being double-gasketed. The next day, I was driving along and started hearing noise from the engine. Right after that, I noticed my oil pressure light was starting to blink pretty fast. As soon as I pulled over and popped the hood, I found oil dripping and all over the place. Had it towed and they fixed the problem. I'm glad they gave me a loaner, but I was not happy that they screwed up.

    After adding the new oil and filling to specification, always start the car up first then move it to level ground before checking the dipstick. Fords usually take a while to level out so it might be best to wait several minutes before you get an accurate reading on the dipstick. Plus make sure you have a gasket on your drain plug or replace it depending on the condition before putting the plug back in. Other than that you'll find its saves a lot of money to do a synthetic oil change yourself. $30 vs. what seems to be the standard $55 price of many shops and dealerships.

  • @eisman07

    Somethings I agree with were previously said: 1) Load new filter with clean oil and Lubricate seal. Usually they say 1/4 turn or so past hand tight. Before tightening Look and make sure the gasket from the old oil filter came off. When checking oil level check it on a level surface. Latex gloves help keep clean.

    you should run the car till its hot first then drain the oil so the oil is thinner and drains faster and always change your drain plug other wise good informative vid good job for a first time knowing the correct way to do it as hand tight filter and little bit of oil on the seal helps the seal stay sealed but you should check the oil when the car is flat

    Handy tip for keeping your hands clean, put pressure on the drain plug as you pull it out keeping it sealed via the threads, until it is fully loose, then quickly pull it off. I do it every time, and I usually end up with almost no oil on my hands.

    Cool vid, tip for the future, check the oil level flat ground. When your car is on the ramps you won't get an accurate reading on the dip stick the oil will be based towards the back side of the oil pan.

    Overall good video but some extra steps Matt forgot for people who are planning to change their oil:
    - Prefill your oil filter (if it is the type used in this video). Also, no need to snug the filter up with a tool, just do it by hand because the filter will tighten itself over time.
    - To avoid leaks, replace your drain plug crush washer.
    - Use gloves, oil can cause cancer

    I had an oil pan like that and ended up buying a different one because of the size of the opening. I got a different one that has a shallow catch pan, but much bigger in area, that drains into an area below. Walmart sells them for around $10.00. MUCH cleaner for the driveway.

    Since the filter is installed upright, you should fill the new filter with fresh oil before installing it. That way, the engine won't be starved of oil on startup as long as it would with an empty filter.

    I used to change the oil in my 86 Camry, it was a piece of cake, the filter was right at the top of the motor, the drain pan was facing forward within easy reach from the front. Most of these new cars are not nearly as easy.

    I just changed the oil on my GF's ecoStang for the first time last week. I have to say that it was the absolute easiest oil change I've ever done. Ford finally put an oil filter in a place you can grab it and remove it without slobbering oil all over. I've had over 10 different cars and trucks in my family and this by far was the easiest. BTW, my oil plug wasn't as tight as Suburuwrxfan's. So, I'm guessing the service tech that changed his oil previously, must have over tightened it quite a bit. BTW even if you hand tighten an oil filter it will be significantly tighter when you try to remove it. The rubber gasket expands and creates more resistance. Also, on the Ecoboost Mustang, if you put the spec oil capacity of 5.7qts, it will NOT measure to the top hashmark of the dipstick. The oil filter will absorb some. The owner's manual will tell you not to ad oil between oil changes unless the level on the dipstick is down to the "ADD" hashmark. I filled it up to the top hashmark anyway just because I hate having a partial quart of oil sitting around the garage. Just don't over fill (common info here, I know). Good video!

  • @danielfl.9347

    This is not all wrong, but a lot could have been done better:
    1) When taking the oil filter off, the drain plug should not be put on since upwards of 200ml of oil (or more) can flow out of the drain plug after the filter has been screwed of the engine.
    2) Wearing gloves would be a good idea since oil, especially used motor oil can be dangerous for your skin.
    3) A good idea would be to take of your oil filler cap off, which results in a better flow.
    4) If your oil filter is places upside down, then fill it half full of oil so the engine will have oil immediately after startup.
    5) If you have your on jack stands, then lower it down while draining the oil (without turning the engine oil) so you can get all of your oil out.
    But otherwise fine "how to" video!

    You don't need to let your engine drain for half an hour. A couple of minutes will be fine. As long as you're changing the oil frequently enough with modern oils the detergents will suspend the residual oil.
