@@RaduUrsache. I agree with the 24 being too small for modern day, but 27 is a decent work size. It’s should be 27 and 32 now like it used to be 24 and 27.
My office had about 7 $5,000 USD iMac Pros. It was painful to have to dispose of them because we switched our creative team to MacBook Pros and the iMacs could not be reused as displays without taking them apart. Even if it's uglier, buying discrete components makes much more sense in the long run, for nearly every type of consumer, than using an AIO. I know that after that experience, I will never endorse buying an all in one again, unless there's a very specific commercial use (think point of sale terminal or something consumers don't care about).
@@arturoehr this isn’t still the case, but the original reason they killed target display mode was because of the switch to the 5K panel. At the time, the hardware on a larger scale just wasn’t ready. DisplayPort could not handle 5K, so internally it was using two DisplayPort inputs and stitching it together to get a 5K image. Without some software magic and using two separate cables to connect to the iMac, target display mode just wasn’t possible at the time. Obviously display cables caught up and they could have done it with a single thunderbolt cable including PD charging for a MacBook for a nice one cable setup a few years now. But at least *originally* there was a legitimate reason for it.

I’ve been using the PA278CV, the slightly lower powered version of this monitor for about 2 years with my intel MacBook Pro. It works wonderfully, and for the price I paid for it, it was an absolute no brainer.
I have the same monitor and I am super happy with it. I've also got a laptop, so like this this video I've been considering the upgrade to a mac mini for the extra juice. I'll need to get a second monitor though if I do that!
The most expensive single piece of computing hardware I've ever purchased was a 27in iMac. It makes me sad that the current "all Apple" option is significantly more expensive than it needs to be. I also don't understand why they can't just enable target mode on the ones that have TB3. It should be possible, they just.. don't.
mac minis keep their form factor so all the companies making racking solutions for them don't need to retool, and all the equipment rooms using them don't have to buy new racking kits as part of the upgrade path.
I have swore by Asus monitors for years, I have tried nearly every category of Asus monitor they have and all of them are great. Also the only Touchscreen that works well with a Mac is an Asus VT229 and I have 3 of them in my audio live sound rig as control surfaces connected to a Macbook Pro M1 max.
Give me the rumors a while back, I’m surprised they never updated the higher-end iMac. Even with the separate monitor solution mentioned in the video, Apple could’ve done a whole lot better (as shown by Asus). For one, no 120Hz or HDR are glaring omissions at that price.
@@toxicturkeyy i have 144 hz at home for gaming and 60hz at work. For work 60hz is fine and no need for hdr. Especially if your grading. I have a 2019 27" iMac with Core i9 which I bought with minimum memory and upgraded to 64GB because it was so much cheaper to do it myself. Still runs great, MacOS and Windows in VMWare Fusion.
@@TheFrozenfish Better question is why would I? Using Fusion I can use MacOS and Windows (and Linux) at the same time. Best of all worlds. With Boot Camp you can only use one OS at a time. Since I have plenty of cores and lots of memory and storage, running more than one OS at the same time makes more sense.
Still using my ASUS ProArt display from almost 10 years ago, excellent monitors. (I have newer monitors, but the ProArt is still excellent, and I use it for TV/Film work still).
I swear, I'm not really an Apple guy at all, other than using an iPhone, I don't have any other Apple hardware however, I watch every single one of these Mac Address videos. Horst's presentation style always just has me wrapped and I can't look away. Good job MA team! Keep up the great work and interesting content!
I have 2 of these monitors. Both started showing grey marks on the bottom bezel within 2 years of use. The RMA process was a nightmare and took me 3 tries sending it back to them before they were able to reproduce the issue. The monitor is amazing, however the RMA experience makes me question if I'd buy one again.
I have a similar monitor and that single-cable USB-C charge & video thing is absolute gold IMO. Being able to connect your mac with 1 cable is something I would never have expected. Then I use my macBook pro as a 2nd smaller ultra-hi-res monitor on the side. It's a great setup and very reasonably priced.
We use 2x Asus PA279 and M1Max Studios/M2Pro Mac Minis for our art department and they are great. The only issue seems to be that about 40% of the time, one of the displays won't wake from sleep and all my windows reset positions. I don't know if it's an OSX issue, or a firmware issue with the monitors.
That stack of computer elements does remind me of a stack of audio players at my grandparents. With a radio, cassete player, cd player all similar units stacked onto one another
I prefer the reduction on cable mess that the iMac originally brought to my computer desk when I switched back in 2007. Over that time I had two iMacs, a 24" which is still running with another family and my most recent 27" (2013) which recently died. I had been holding out hoping for a new 27" iMac to appear but finally was forced to order a machine. I opted for the MacMini with the M2Pro and the Apple Studio Display. I agree with a lot of your thoughts here and decided that given I got nearly 10 years out of my last machine a bit of a splurge wasn't a major issue.
Using the 24 inch M1 iMac and have no issues using it and doing all I did with the 27 inch. 4.5 k Display speakers are amazing. I tried the Mac mini and monitor however unless you get the studio display it always felt like something was missing and it was the monitor.
I use betterdisplay on my 4k screen. I have an m1 MacBook Air and the 4k scaling makes all my icons unreadably small, works fine though with betterdisplay
I prefer the Mac Mini with a monitor. I have an older , yet fully upgraded, Intel based one, and unless I need the processing power I'm usually using it instead of my M2 Macbook pro. After I get my new thunderbolt dock it will probably be a different story though, but that's going to be a few weeks.
I had a 2010 iMac , the logic board went under warranty, the cost to repair was $3000 , more then the entire computer, i sold it asap and bought a used mac pro cheese grater, haven't looked back since, I have a 2008 cheese grater and it still works very well and the 2010s with a boosted graphics card still run most software fast enough for my needs. We tried to run my train simulator on a macbook air recently and it was useless so looks like I'll have to stay with windows to play any demanding games, even ones optimised for metal ,as the windows alternatives are so much cheaper.
I always envied the 27" iMac for its screen, but didn't want to buy a display I couldn't reuse with an upgraded computer. I was so happy when the Studio Display was announced and instantly ordered two to combine with a Mac Studio. Damn expensive, but boy, the best setup I've ever had. I'm extremely happy with it.
The timing of this video couldn't have been better. I was literally having a conversation with my s/o about doing a setup like this instead of overspecing a Mac Mini or going the Mac Studio route (for what will essentially be a web browsing machine). Those matching hubs/hard drive enclosures for the mini were the trick.
Lucky that I just happened to buy the 5k iMac in 2019. Not a fan of the 24 inch colored iMac design and it is hard to find better value than the 27 inch. Apple prices also went up sharply here, so the buying window seems to be gone.
The fact that Apple has refused to support Displayport MST for this long is quite infuriating. As a developer, having extra display space matters almost as much as performance, but not being able to take advantage of DisplayPort daisy chaining on my monitors is quite frustrating If I didn’t need to be on the go though, the Mac mini is a great budget setup. One of the advantages of Mac minis is their integrated power supply, which is great for cable management. Not to mention I wouldn’t need a fancier display with color certifications. The AIO just seems bulky and if I needed to switch devices, like a windows desktop, I couldn’t
I’m getting my mom a mac mini. Her 14 year old imac needs to go and it’s a miracle it still runs lol. Thanks for the display recommendation. Hope the built in speakers are decent enough
Unless your mom does color accurate work like photo or video editing, this display is wasted on her. With a delta E of 0.6, you're paying for accuracy humans can't perceive, and leaving out nice consumer features like hdr or good speakers or good black levels. Getting an oled for this price, or getting a cheaper ips lcd and pairing with good speakers, would be better.
@@megasxlr22 could she use a monitor mounted or smaller soundbar in lieu of built in speakers? That should save on space and give a much better audio experience than using the typically super crappy inbuilt ones found on the vast majority of desktops or monitors.
Still have my i9 iMac, I’m still using it as my photo edit and video edit machine and it’s still performing wonderfully. Four years old and I’m hoping to get at least another four years out of it.
The absolute dealbreaker for the studio display for me is a singular usb-c port for display input so it’s only for one device. That’s ridiculous especially given the price.
Old iMacs are turning into a great value in my opinion. Just purchased an iMac Pro, with powerful internals, a nice display, under $1600, and the aesthetic is unbeatable
Dear MacAdress, please make a video about the native “retina”-scaling and why 4K is a bad idea. To get the moast out of your display when using a Mac mini or Mac Studio, you need to drive a 2k or 5/6k display. This is really interesting. I researched ALOT before I bought my BENQ 27 2k-display for editing video. And it is awesome!
Now that would be a neat vid. I'm currently using a 23.8 QHD display from Lenovo, and I think everything looks great. Makes me wish we had Displays around the 24 in. range (with USB-C charging, and QHD), since not all of us have rooms or workspaces large enough to accommodate a 27 in. Display.
This is the setup that i will buy this year. I still saving money for the M2 Mini 256 16RAM, but i already buyed a ProArt Display and the M.2 Base dock. My 2015 5K iMac started to give me up.
Would love to see more audio production focused content as I feel like the higher processing power of the M2 Pro chip or even a spec’d out M2 Mini would benefit that greatly in terms of exporting and moving around a timeline full of tracks.
@@macaddress Never got recommended that one, great video. Makes me remember why I went Windows instead of M1 when I upgraded my music workstation, lol. Even today some of my favorite plugins don't have native M1 support. Would really love a more detailed benchmarks of some common DAWs and plugins across a few different machines. But maybe that's more LTT territory. Tell Linus!
I bought the Asus ProArt for photo editing just over a year ago to go with my Dell gaming laptop. A couple of weeks ago I bought the Mac Mini M2 pro and the Satechi hub, and I LOVE this setup! I seem to be getting much better performance from my ProArt when using the Mac Mini vs. my Dell gaming laptop.
One of the most visually satisfying and beautiful shots in a yt video. Feels like I’ve been needing that breath of fresh air, I’m definitely a sucker for natural lighting. Great work Mac address team! ❤
For everyone that does have an older iMac, I just want to point out that you can use them as monitors, if you open them up and replace the old logic board with a displaycontroller. They are about 70-150, depending on your model, but still cheaper than getting a new equivalent monitor and once closed up agan, you can use it as the display for any Mac or PC :) Its not that hard of a conversion, anyone somewhat handy can do that.
You're 100 % correct. There are some excellent documents / videos out there which specifically adress the scaling issue and absolutely confirm your comment. Obviously there won't be a real issue for the average user but if someone does some performance related tasks scaling will have a very negative effect. Cheers.
I use the 27 in Dell ultra sharp from last year with the IPS black display. It's pretty minimalist in design, has plenty of ports and even has software that lets me control the display settings within Mac OS. Only real issue I've had is the thunderbolt hub function occasionally. Not working properly though. I don't know if this is just the nature of port hubs and dongles.
I have the same probably. IMHO Dell makes better monitors than ASUS. In this one, you can adjust the USB-C priority to be high quality screen vs better USB-Hub bandwidth. I think you can try that out.
I will miss the 27 inch iMac a lot. Using it in the living room and just having a silent computer with a amazing monitor in a - in my taste - good design. So sad that great hardware gets outdated by software nowadays. Price of progress, I know. But still. All of them have served me well. iMac ❤
iMac will never go out of style! I Any iMac with thunderbolt connectivity will always have its value. You can always use it as monitor or storage device!
I would love having a 28 inch imac with apple silicon and 5k display, so much more tidy and the thin body they come in with colors would be super cool too, they could do a 28in and 32 would be ideal and sell like crazy
My 2013 27" inch iMac bit the dust a few weeks back and after much deliberation I decided on the Mac Mini M2 Pro with an Asus 32inch 1440P monitor, I already had the other peripherals so I'm all in at $1700 which today in my eyes is a Bargain considering the iMac cost me $2400 new back then. I have to say I'm glad I went this route, I absolutely love this little rocket and will be expanding the storage down the road.
Thank you for promoting a modular system, where things can be upgraded and/or repurposed. In the end, Apple not selling the 27 inch option is a win for reducing e-waste. This option might seem a bit backwards and old-fashioned for some users. But if you take your creative job seriously, this is an absolute must.
I have the m1 Mac Mini and it's honestly the best computer I've ever owned. My first mac was a used late-2011 27in. I loved that thing but when compared with my current mini, it was a no brainer. My current monitor is...okay. I'll look into this one!
I prefer something modular because I like adding a second display or connecting to a switch when I'm not working. Those are hard limitations to an iMac.
Honestly, between the iMac and the Mac Mini setup, I went for the Mini setup. I've been using something akin to what you've got on your desk (except mine is centered around an M1 Mini) for about a year and a half now and it's worked out great. I've been thinking of upgrading to the M2 Mini and I really like the idea of that add on you used with the M.2 drive and the front facing ports!
When it comes to non-Apple monitors, I’ve always preferred Dell Ultrasharps. They’re not cheap, so they’ve tended to be work displays, but they’re the clearest monitors I’ve had outside of Apple’s displays.
When it comes to computer speakers, I found the best solution is just get an inexpensive Bluetooth sound bar. Even a cheap sound bar sounds better than the typical computer set up.
I've never been a big believer in the iMac, because of the screen-computer coupling. Laptops of course suffer from the same coupling, however, that coupling solves a problem (portability) that the iMac does not. I've had a 43" 4k display for use in my music studio now for several years, at least five. I've used it with two Mac minis, occasionally with a MacBook Pro, and now, with my Mac Studio. I'm actually looking for a second 4K monitor for it, so perhaps ASUS' sponsorship paid off ;-)
I just bought the MacBook Pro M2 Max upgrading from my 2017 Intel iMac and I spent so long trying to research a monitor that was 32-in for a decent price. I ultimately went with the Samsung QN 90B 43-in display. It's very close for color accuracy when calibrated, the only downside is the viewing angles. But the brightness is comparable to OLED and works really well for video editing and as a workspace for managing a lot of windows of projects at the same time.
I think the iMac had its place but as soon as they removed target display mode it went downhill. Although the modular set up as nice as you only have to change out certain components as needed and then they can be regifted a new life. Both in upgrading the system and handing off old components to somebody else.
I got my parents a Samsung M8 monitor for their Mac Mini, it came with a webcam and a sort-of USB hub. It's a pretty neat solution for less than half the money. It's a shame apple doesn't make a cheaper display.
Because of the pricing on upgrades on the iMac I have never bought one. The base model doesn’t cut it. If the base model would have been just one notch better in disk space and memory for the same price I would consider them.
I am appreciative of your video on how to break affordably 😢 into the Apple desktop for 2023. Thanks for some ideas, but for me not having a 27” iMac is a letdown, for... When rumors of the M1 iMac came out I was excited. I thought, ‘Finally! I can upgrade my ancient 2013 27” iMac to a modern M1 CPU’. Well, it’s been quite a wait, still no affordable 5k option ever showed up from Apple. So, sadly in the meantime I’ve become a traitor to Apple and jumped ship for Linux Manjaro which has the software I need, without the Apple price hike. I think that something hard and heavy would have to land on my head before I would shell out thousands for a Mac.
If other viewers are curious about Linux after reading the above comment, please have a Look at Zorin OS version 16 (or 17 when it will be published) with the Pro option (a onetime payment of 39,- Euro / Dollar) or Pop!_OS Linux. Both Linux distros are based on Ubuntu and both a very well suited for people coming from macOS or Windows.
The 24” is really not so bad if you adjust the resolution. My last setup was a 27” monitor, and the 24” is better than I thought it would be. It’s also an excellent 4.5k retina display.
I have this ProArt, it's really really good One thing I hate about external monitors is, I don't want my laptop's display to look better than my big primary monitor display. Asus nailed it at less than half the cost of the cheapest Apple display Even with my new 16" MBP, it doesn't feel like I'm using an inferior screen even though the built-in panel is objectively better
M2 Pro is double the size of M2 and M2 in the vid was 8GB RAM while M2 Pro was 32GB RAM (RAM increases performance as well). And if the M2 is the same as the same M2 in the MacBook Air, the SSD speeds also will be way slower because of production issues, which is seen with the M2 MacBook Pros as well
Because my friend and her kids don't care that it can't render 4k videos or do 3d models super quickly when all they want is a home computer that lets them browse the web, text, and maybe make video calls. It's a relatively cheap desktop that can do all of that without issue, sits in a compact area, and is made by a reputable company.
I have an original 5K iMac in storage. I will probably put linux on it. All old computers in my house get switched to linux eventually. I now have the M1 Mac mini and have been very happy with it. I got it with 1TB of storage and 16 MB of memory. I have a Dell U2717D which only does 1440p. My eyes are not good enough to notice the difference. It has been an excellent replacement for the old iMac. I don't do video and I mostly use Lightroom for my photos.
The lack of non-Apple 5K displays is really disheartening. The entire rest of the monitor industry turned their nose up at higher displays for what I can only assume is... fear?
LG and Dell both sell them. LG actually sells a monitor with the exact same panel as the Studio Display. Complete with speakers and webcam (though both of lower quality than the Studio). The problem with 5K is that you're stuck with 60Hz.
I still have my first 24" iMac which I purchased in 2007. I bought a 27" in 2014 and another 27" in 2017. I am very sad that Apple no longer offers 27" iMacs. I am not sure what I will do when the 2014 and 2017 are no longer useable. I prefer the all-in-one design vs. modular but, I may not have much choice when the time comes.
I upgraded my 2014 iMac to the M2 Pro Mac Mini just recently. Ended up getting a Samsung 32" monitor (don't recall the model) that has a stand that clamps to the desk. I like it, esp. the M2 speed, but the monitor isn't as nice as the iMac's 5k. I want the glass front, shiny glass is crystal clear, anything else does reduce sharpness. The accessories you show are very cool, I'll have to get them. The modular setup does provide more options however, and what should have happened with the iMac is the ability to turn it into a monitor. That would be great, someone should develop a kit to convert them, can't be that hard! I do prefer the 5k monitor but I'm not willing to pay for the Apple Display (yet). 🙂
The problem is with this setup is that it is a desktop tower display as the whole point of the imac is the simplicity of having one cable plugging into the back of the all in one display and computer The closest that I think ltt got was the desk computer or the computer built into the desk and I would love a rollable screen for the imac or a foldable iPad mini or a Microsoft studio setup The original blue imacs were a revolution and we are not going to get a revolution like that again as playing around with designs in stable diffusion an art AI program I hate that the new imacs are not upgradable and don't start of with 1 tb of storage as phones and computers should at least start of with this
I do like your set up. I'd use a modern Mac mini with those docks. That alone would give me the storage and ability to expand as need be. Plus modern Mac minis are great media computers.
I had dreamed of getting a 27" iMac since the age of 13. I finally managed to buy a 5K iMac and I'm so in love with it, I plan to keep and use it for as long as possible.
I love the Pro Art set up way more. Maybe because of the options, stacking or just the price. I just feel as if I'd prefer it. I've been eye balling the Pro Art.
I love the Mac Mini M2. I bought mine as soon as they came out with 24GB RAM and 512GB SSD. I’m using a Mac Mouse and Keyboard from an unused iMac. I bought a ProArt 24” display last week (it’s not the model in this video) and I’m not impressed in the least. It works but it’s not a good display compared to Apple hardware. I’ve also got an LG 42” display; it is much better but not as nice as the 5K iMac 27” displays I’m used to. I’m still considering how to get a better display without shelling out for a studio display.
Nice, but I wish more companies sold glossy displays. I really hate the Mayte displays every company has, it looks cheap and noticeably makes images softer to my eye. I’m also always in a light controlled environment so glare is never an issue.
At this point we've just come full circle to a tower desktop PC, which we already knew is better from an upgradability standpoint but we're back to messy cables, inconsistent looking peripherals and slight incompatibility between devices. Bottom line is this problem only exists because Apple wants to be apple and doesn't want to give users upgrade paths.
dude you NAILED the graph on this one. I hope this kind of graphs or charts gets used in all LTTMG vids. So easy to understand and remember in a quick glance
i still have my imac 27 inch i7 32 gig of ram 3 tb drive. When It dies I will probably go this route as I am not downsizing to a 24 inch imac they sell now. Apple really screwed the pooch when they got rid of the 27 inch imac.
Definitely a Mac Mini for me, really like them a lot. The compact size, cheaper configurations, and for me, the built in power supply for that size. It always baffles me when a company comes out with a Mac Mini killer, only to have it come with a power brick. I have mine with 2 other PCs and a PS5 on an HDMI switch that goes to a monitor and a projector. Throw in a Logitech MX keyboard and mouse with device switching and I’m set.
Despite the positives, this setup comes with more problems. You can use the iMac as a display without much issue. That all said the most recent iMacs are all stop gaps till they make a larger one with the M1.
What I like about modular setups is when the sun is shining in though the massive glass panes of an (aquarium) office is that I can simply move or shade the CPU so that work can still be done instead of erecting a shaded canopy over the desk. I might have a very specific reason for disliking iMac's.
I started my Apple journey with the old iMac G4 lampshade. Beautiful machine but it broke my heart when it grew old and slow and I was left with, as you say, a beautiful display permanently tethered to obsolete hardware. I’ve been modular ever since. These days I’m rocking the M1 Pro MacBook Pro with Apple keyboard and mouse, Edifier speakers and a Huawei MateView display. A beautiful combo that is easy to upgrade as parts need replacing.
I upgraded from the M1 Mac Mini to the Mac Studio (mainly so I could drive 2 27" Thunderbolt displays). I'll never be worthy of it - I cannot tax it enough. I also dongled 2 Sandisk 1TB drives off of it. Very happy. And, my Thunderbolt displays were less than $200 each. It's a good layout.
Losing the 27in was a loss. Most creatives I know had one for the home office setup.
I'm currently on my 27inch 2017 iMac, and I will hold onto her as long as I can for my music.

I have a 2019 27" iMac with Core i9 which I bought with minimum memory and upgraded to 64GB because it was so much cheaper to do it myself. Still runs great, MacOS and Windows in VMWare Fusion.
Why not use Bootcamp?
@@TheFrozenfish Better question is why would I? Using Fusion I can use MacOS and Windows (and Linux) at the same time. Best of all worlds. With Boot Camp you can only use one OS at a time. Since I have plenty of cores and lots of memory and storage, running more than one OS at the same time makes more sense.
apple silicon will smoke any intel based mac period! Most apps have adapted to apple silicon, using GPU core instead CPU. Barely get fan to spin
I have a hand me down iPhone and it doesn't compare to a MacBook, iMac, Mac Mini, etc. macOS is far superior to iOS.
@@chrisx5127 what even is the point of this comment
We are the opposite, the only Apple product I have is my M2 Mac mini. I don't like other Apple products.
I think this corner studio/video area really suits mac address. The vegetation vibes really well with apple's design forward approach.
The UI scaling of macOS iis the only issue with 4K displays. It's really hard to discern the difference between 4K and 5K otherwise.
I was about to say, this seems like an large oversight from the LTT team to be recommending a 4k 27" monitor for MacOS.
@@theedmanHD you mean like they have at 4:18?
I use betterdisplay on my 4k screen. I have an m1 MacBook Air and the 4k scaling makes all my icons unreadably small, works fine though with betterdisplay
This is the exact reason why I shell out $1600 for the studio display. lol
7:40 there should be written m2 pro instead m1 pro
This is genuinely a useful ad. I am in the market for this and could get two of these for one apple display and still have cash left.
The fact that Apple has refused to support Displayport MST for this long is quite infuriating. As a developer, having extra display space matters almost as much as performance, but not being able to take advantage of DisplayPort daisy chaining on my monitors is quite frustrating
If I didn’t need to be on the go though, the Mac mini is a great budget setup. One of the advantages of Mac minis is their integrated power supply, which is great for cable management. Not to mention I wouldn’t need a fancier display with color certifications. The AIO just seems bulky and if I needed to switch devices, like a windows desktop, I couldn’t
Yeah now tell me why we can't use the new iMac 24" as a monitor!
The monitor is nice, but is the power cord removable??
You bet it is!
What evildude writes is correct. Choose a different display monitor for your mother which suits her better and costs less.
@@evildude109 thanks for the sound advice. You are right. Gotta rely on built in speakers cause she doesn’t have room for speakers though.

The absolute dealbreaker for the studio display for me is a singular usb-c port for display input so it’s only for one device. That’s ridiculous especially given the price.

Dear MacAdress, please make a video about the native “retina”-scaling and why 4K is a bad idea. To get the moast out of your display when using a Mac mini or Mac Studio, you need to drive a 2k or 5/6k display. This is really interesting. With the MacMini you can add multiple monitors and keep the same look at specs across all of them.
I am LOVING my PA279CRV monitor! One of the many great things about it is that is sooooo adjustable: up and down, tilt, and even spin!
Would love to see more audio production focused content as I feel like the higher processing power of the M2 Pro chip or even a spec’d out M2 Mini would benefit that greatly in terms of exporting and moving around a timeline full of tracks.
Check out Neil Parfitt, he's done a lot of audio-focused Apple stuff (especially with the rack mount version of the Mac pro)

It's a professionally shot ASUS commercial.
For everyone that does have an older iMac, I just want to point out that you can use them as monitors, if you open them up and replace the old logic board with a displaycontroller. They are about 70-150, depending on your model, but still cheaper than getting a new equivalent monitor and once closed up agan, you can use it as the display for any Mac or PC :) Its not that hard of a conversion, anyone somewhat handy can do that.
a great alternative would be the LG Ultrafine 5K Display, a true retina display for Mac
No, it's not. There are a lot of chipset issues with the LG, which is way Apple dropped them and made their own Apple Studio Display.
… but Display Scaling IS a deal breaker.
You're 100 % correct. There are some excellent documents / videos out there which specifically adress the scaling issue and absolutely confirm your comment. Obviously there won't be a real issue for the average user but if someone does some performance related tasks scaling will have a very negative effect. Cheers.
@@hinikolai I do graphic design. And for that, display scaling annoys me a lot.
@@flottenheimer yea, can completely relate. I'm often very surprised that this topic is not more relevant or talked about.
But still. All of them have served me well. iMac ❤

I would love having a 28 inch imac with apple silicon and 5k display, so much more tidy and the thin body they come in with colors would be super cool too, they could do a 28in and 32 would be ideal and sell like crazy
Yeah that way they would not sell any of their monitors that's for sure. It means it's unlikely to happen.
I have a 32" display, won't ever go back to anything smaller or bigger.
@@zeus1117 I think they could sell enough large imacs to make up for that over priced monitor, which didn't seem to be a massive success anyways

Totally agree! I have been using Minis since 2006, but I'm ready for an iMac now!
ASUS make a monitor with resolution greater than 4K challenge (impossible)
I prefer the modular setup it offers flexibility and ability to improve as you need
Apple’s pricing are always done with “meaningless greed”.
I have this ProArt, it's really really good
One thing I hate about external monitors is, I don't want my laptop's display to look better than my big primary monitor display. Asus nailed it at less than half the cost of the cheapest Apple display
Even with my new 16" MBP, it doesn't feel like I'm using an inferior screen even though the built-in panel is objectively better
Frankly i'm stunned at the performance difference between M2 and M2 Pro. Like seriously, how is that acceptable?
It’s pro for a reason. Users who wouldn’t take advantage of the extra horsepower need not buy it.
Why on earth would performance disparity be unacceptable? What moral or ethical standard exactly are you appealing to?
The entire rest of the monitor industry turned their nose up at higher displays for what I can only assume is... fear?
LG still sell those
LG and Dell both sell them. LG actually sells a monitor with the exact same panel as the Studio Display. Complete with speakers and webcam (though both of lower quality than the Studio). The problem with 5K is that you're stuck with 60Hz.
It always makes me happy when I see a new Mac Address video.

When is this monitor going to be on sale in the US?
I still have my first 24" iMac which I purchased in 2007. I bought a 27" in 2014 and another 27" in 2017. I am very sad that Apple no longer offers 27" iMacs. I am not sure what I will do when the 2014 and 2017 are no longer useable. I prefer the all-in-one design vs. modular but, I may not have much choice when the time comes.
I have a 2020 iMac and I'm very happy with it even more so when I bumped up my RAM up to 128GB.
The problem is with this setup is that it is a desktop tower display as the whole point of the imac is the simplicity of having one cable plugging into the back of the all in one display and computer
The closest that I think ltt got was the desk computer or the computer built into the desk and I would love a rollable screen for the imac or a foldable iPad mini or a Microsoft studio setup
The original blue imacs were a revolution and we are not going to get a revolution like that again as playing around with designs in stable diffusion an art AI program
I hate that the new imacs are not upgradable and don't start of with 1 tb of storage as phones and computers should at least start of with this
I do like your set up.
I'd use a modern Mac mini with those docks. That alone would give me the storage and ability to expand as need be.
Plus modern Mac minis are great media computers.
Totally cosign the ASUS display. As someone who does major color grading, I can confirm that it's amazing value for the price point. I love it!
Apple really screwed the pooch when they got rid of the 27 inch imac.
is it possible to use an old imac just for its screen? any way to connect the mac mini to an imac and use that as your monitor?
Still rocking my 2007 27” iMac. Waiting for the right upgrade to come along.
I might have a very specific reason for disliking iMac's.
i like how were putting so much effort into making a more modular mac experience
just imagine being able to swap out parts in the computer itself..
I’m using an old 2010 iMac as a monitor and love it!
