    I think you should restore it to original condition, not modify it. I think it should reflect the way it looked when it was an active member of your family, and you were riding on the back. Let it be a mirror to your memories and reflect those good times.

  • @HalfdeadRider
    @HalfdeadRider ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The problem with changing the frame if you do go that route, is that it will have to be inspected and reregistered, meaning basically it's not the same bike anymore and have a different reg plate. That might not bother you but if I was close to my Dad and it was his bike, I think it would bother me personally. Definitely worth researching to see if it can be repaired properly and not just filled in or changed.

    • @stikmannn
      @stikmannn ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that frame damage is a nightmare if it wasn't me dads old bike I'd run away 🏃🏿

    • @culturalpubwalks
      @culturalpubwalks ปีที่แล้ว

      How so? if the new frame comes with V5 then you can 'just' reframe it along with the associated number plate. Only inspection will be MOT afaik

    • @HalfdeadRider
      @HalfdeadRider ปีที่แล้ว

      @@culturalpubwalks No it doesn't work like that, the frame will not match the engine etc, it has to be inspected by an engineer and reregistered, so it will be like a whole new bike as far as the new V5 is concerned.

    • @culturalpubwalks
      @culturalpubwalks ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HalfdeadRider . I'd better get my Yam FZ inspected then. I just amended the V5 of the new frame to match the engine. Where do I go?

    • @HalfdeadRider
      @HalfdeadRider ปีที่แล้ว

      @@culturalpubwalks Well as you say it's an FZ that means you are not in the UK, rules may be different over there, get in touch with the DVLA equivalent which I believe is the DMV in the US(?), and tell them what you have done and ask if you need to get it inspected and/or reregistered.
      Usually the frame is the main vehicle identifier, so once that is changed it's no longer the same vehicle.

    Those four-cylinder, five-valve Yamaha engines are lovely motors and are probably more relevant for most road riders than the current crop of 200bhp screamers. If that frame ding is from the bar end weight, has it also broken the lock stop from the steering head I wonder? Best of luck with the project.

He would definitely need a reset because his condition needs (slight) improvement, but what would you say about turning him into a training model? in the sense that the performance would remain but it was enclosed so that it could stand up after a slide and teach something. Please don't street fighter it. IMO bikes of this period are amongst the best looking, without the hard angularity of todays crop of machines. I'd say Street fighters are a way of saving a bike that's gone beyond returning to original spec and yours certainly isn't that far gone. You've got a few red flags for this bike with the odd wheels, frame damage etc, but being a family bike you should be able to find out what occurred. What colour will you go with? I have to admit I'm a bit partisan, I have a 1997 blue and black model 👍

    Not entirely correct. The ace was never meant to replace the FZR, it was a stop-gap bike, meant to fill in while they developed the R1. It was made from pre-existing parts and was never intended to become a special bike or a flagship model. Despite this though, it's a great bike. I still got mine.

    If you restore it to very good standard, it probably won't be worth more than £3K, so always keep that in mind when you spend money on doing it up.

    The bike came out in some fantastic colors, unfortunately your bike is not among those. Of course what matters is how YOU like it. The bummer is the 5-speed gearbox. But you didn't even tell us if it runs!!
