@@ariefahazhar3842 I read another comment that only the sacrifices take places once every 90 years. The may queen and the rest of the traditions are repeated once a year. It's also makes sense when you think about all the people dying in the rituals.

Dani is greeted with " welcome home ' while the others just get " welcome ".
They also tell her directly "we're happy to have you" so you know at that moment, they're keeping her.

The eeriest part about this movie is that it mostly all takes place in the bright sunshine so it's filmed like a happy story but is quite the opposite.

With the bright pastel colors and central focus of so many scenes, it's a lot like a Wes Anderson film - a horror version of a Wes Anderson film.

The most amazing thing about people's reaction to this movie is how they talk about Christian being a bad boyfriend or Mark being a bad guy.....uh........did you forget someone? Pelle led five friends to slaughter. He's one of the biggest horror movie MOFO's of all time.

But the difference there is that Pelle was raised to be like that. It's part of his culuture. He more than likely see's his actions as doing good in world. Then there's Mark and Christian who should know better than to behave the way they do, but choose to carry on being shitty anyhow.
Well that was my POV going in too (with the bf, not mark) but once it took its turn I was mad at Pelle too lol. And at the end, I was just mad the unhappy ending

Watching this again tonight... something i never noticed before: in the first few minutes of the movie, the men are at a restaurant talking about how Christian should be single. One of them comments that he could be getting the waitress pregnant right now and Pele responds " you could be getting a Sweedish girl pregnant " a little bit of innocent foreshadowing

I read that this particular painting is very known in Sweden, it’s from one of their most famous painters. It makes sense Ikea would sell it. But it is a true Swedish painting. I think they did that on purpose for realism. The community is named after a real Swedish town and some of the songs sang are real Swedish folk songs.

Did anyone else notice that when Mark asks what game the children are playing, it’s called “Skin the Fool”? Mark is clearly the fool of the group, is skinned when he’s killed and his “corpse” has a jesters hat on it when it’s placed in the temple to burn.

This movie was an excellent example of how just about anyone can fall for cult tactics. As seen by the amount of people that called this a "happy" horror movie.

And no one fell for the tactics that one girl did but she’s no different from any other people that follow Charles Manson her family was gone she had no loved ones and her boyfriend abandoned her and everything was going to crap. Why not join a cult.
I admit I thought the ending had a weird "happiness" to it. Then I read about how this is about homicidal death cults indoctrinating people and I was upset that I felt what I did the first time. THEN I realized that was the whole point. Brilliant movie
@@adamkreuz9068 if you’re into that thing that’s great for you, but the fact that’s the base underlining thing isn’t really that its brilliant. Because technically that’s more of a dumb down version of the way the film wants its tone to be taken. You’re brilliant for noticing that’s all it’s about though. And if that is what you want to do it for then I do admit, yeah it is a good movie. I’m an artist and I just don’t like this company using outside art they didn’t develop as their face plate and their style and and twist the narrative of it all to suit a pretentious scrip.
Well, Dani IS happy by the end. It's a horror story for everyone but her. She found family, a mate who wants and appreciates her, and acceptance. She knows now when and how she will die, and no longer has to fear that. The cult have given her peace.
Everyone else sees it as what it is: monstrous. But for Dani, this is home and she is joyful.

My fav scene was when Dani could suddenly communicate with the other girl during that dancing ceremony. The language barrier just suddenly disappeared.. it was done so well!

After that shooting those psychos if they so much as touched you would have definitely been in the cards.
Something to keep in mind is that the characters aren't really all that normal. The british couple are the only ones that appear to be decent people.
Josh is an academic who is blind to reality and only focused on his thesis - he's not really a bad guy, he just has no grasp of the gravity of the situation, since he only sees it from a analytical, academic perspective.
Mark was not present, but it is likely he would have reacted poorly despite claiming to have missed out. He is crass and obnoxious, but ultimately cowardly.
Chris is likely the most malicious of all. He is indecisive and careless, but most notably emotionally cold.
Dani is weak and anxious. She wants to leave, but she is vulnerable to be coaxed and manipulated by Chris due to her inability to stand up for herself.
What I liked most about this movie was that all the main characters were deeply flawed people, portrayed well by the actors. I found them all unlikable in some way, which was all the more compelling.

the “welcome home” from the old guy (plus his hug and a bunch of other little easter eggs) makes me think it was the plan all along to bring her, and that the elders had astrologically approved her to be Pelle’s “mate”
Didn't Pelle die in the final pyre? I thought that both he and his brother went to go find outsiders and had agreed to die in the end as part of the whole "go outside the commune and find unwitting sacrifices" deal.

@@tatianaren5440 Just rewatched it - I was wrong. Pele was definitely outside, one of the villagers seen chanting and later screaming as the building burned. You can see him wearing a big crown of greenery.
Pelle definitely contacted them before arriving "hey so be extra nice to the blonde girl, she's hella traumatized, she'll join for sure"
Of course, since Pelle mentioned her birthday date at least twice and his own at least once

Not really good acting. All she did was cry and act weak and vulnerable. And those loud sobs, she used them way too much. Nobody cries at a 10 everytime, all the time. She could have toned it down a bit to look more realistic, just my opinion.

@@pointysidedown It is extremely realistic. I in fact think that "leveled" crying in movies is the not realistic part. People sob, people wail. It's a thing. I doubt that her /character/ always cries at a "10" either BUT losing your entire family to a murder suicide and then not being able to process your grief for months does warrant some noise.
I think its worth mentioning that Simon appeared to still be alive in the barn as the lungs were still inflating and deflating and strained breathing can be heard.
I think not, he maybe seen being back to his old self but some residue is still effect from the drink and smoke he intake.

theres a lot of things pulsing like that throughout the movie - almost warped. in the scene with her at the head of the dinner table with the flower crown one of the pink flowers is pulsing in and out i thought i was tripping balls. but you notice more things warping and pulsing

You know what's scary about this whole movie for me even after 3 years or so? It's how I actually calmed down for a bit when the lady explained how the two old people died for the greater good. Their faces were literally smashed in, it was disturbing yet I actually believed and rationalized what the lady was explaining to Connie and Simon. I ACTUALLY thought it was okay.

it might be what they do but i dont see a good rationale for it. once their people reach an age that they cant reproduce, work, or really provide anything for the group they get killed off. the woman argues that they do it to avoid painful deaths but it makes more sense that they simply dont feel the need to take care of them anymore.

can i just say that the scene where she has a panic attack from the shrooms is one of the most accurate depictions of it ive ever seen, the constant talking to yourself so u can calm down and reassure urself that ur fine, overthinking every movement and every surrounding moving in weird ways as well the bright colors. incredible job from the director
I said the same, never did shrooms but deff had some bad experiences while smoking weed.
I felt the same way. One time I smoked weed and had a horrible psychotic episode, I did exactly what Dani did. I ran through the woods, kept talking to myself trying to calm myself down and take control. It was very accurate.

But I realized I was scared or fighting the feeling of losing control, once you can accept it it's fine. But than again, it's not for everybody.

This was not mentioned in the video and I think it's super important to acknowledge Christian and Maja's "mating ritual" is not a sex scene, he was drugged throughout the whole scene. He was not having sex with her, he was being sexually assaulted

I think these films are made to show average people how the average “normal” person can be manipulated to joining a cult. When they suffer immense loss and grief, they have nothing left to lose and are vulnerable to manipulation, that’s how they join the cults. The cult members make them feel like family, like they can count on them. The same can be said for gang members. Psychopaths such as Charles Manson were good at pinpointing people who are vulnerable and easier to manipulate. Seems like basic psychology to me and I feel sorry for people who are easily manipulated.

Yep, people get very focused on the relationship thing. But the movie really nailed the Grief; being surrounded by people that just don't get it, wanting to get a break, and longing for connection. It's a beautiful (and morbid) take on how grief feels.
I went through a traumatic loss and one thing I kept repeating to myself was "don't get in a relationship, you are not okay" I definitely searched for "spiritual" outlets, but i tried to take the useful and leave the rest. My therapist was amazing in not imposing his opinion, but he helped me to stay critical and level-headed through it all. I even did psychedelics during that time, and i don't recommend doing that shit when you are still grieving.
When i watched Midsommar, after 3 or 4 years of my loss, it hit me like a truck.

At least they got the drugging right, for once. All those "mystical experiences" are really just cause the "ceremonial tea" or even just the regular food/drink at recruitment/"just informational" meetings has been dosed. Imagine all the people who still believe it was real when they could manufacture the same type of "spiritual experience" with a lil M.
Pelle described the farm as a “four hour drive north of Stockholm.” That’s way out there in northern Sweden. Especially after witnessing the two elderly people commit suicide...there’s no way they could make it out of there. Look at what happened to Connie and her boyfriend; arguably the two people who freaked out the most after that incident. They were quickly taken care of. And everyone else didn’t bat an eyelid. That skin the fool guy heard Connie scream for her life but didn’t make much of it.
One would assume the rest would be under close surveillance after that. Even if you somehow managed to slip out...it’d be a trek to try and find the main road(they clearly weren’t paying attention coming in) Who knows how far the nearest town was. And slipping away at night would make navigation even harder....plus considering the black guy was killed at night as he snuck in to their “church” to photograph their sacred book...means they were being watched....even at night. Slipping away during the day may have been even harder...even if navigation would be easier. But say you do managed to do so. You’d be on foot and not knowing where to go...unless you just head towards a general southern direction. They’d notice you’re gone in maybe less than an hour and find you. They had transportation and you’d be on foot.
And none of those guys knew how to hot wire a car. But even if they could...they still wouldn’t be able to find the main road with ease. They’d still get chased down. And the villagers would notice the car gone or hear it start if you did it at night.
Pretty scary and hopeless situation to be in. The best option for an escape would have been to first not freak out like Connie and her bf did. Then a good approach would be doing a bit of recon in terms of seeing any viable escape routes. If one is plotted/charted that can take you to the main road. Your best option is probably mid day when everyone is busy with something and leaving your bags behind. To give the impression you’re still there. And take your chances. Because sticking around meant a horrible death.
There's actually a hint that the cult is connected to local right wings political party- which means that even if you get to the nearest town, they might still get you. You go to the town, you talk to the police and book yourself a hostel for the night because you can only book a ticket for tomorrow- and you're abducted in the middle of the night because the hostel owner was contacted by the police and the police was contacted by Harga and accidentally deleted your report out of existence.
Hell, if you take a rentacar right away and make a dash toward Stockholm, a bigger town easier to escape in, you'll be followed, stopped and killed on the side of the road.
Connie and Simon were killed because they were depending on the locals to take them back. Which is kinda silly IMHO - if you see the locals are a bunch of cult psychos, the logical thing (like right after the suicides) would be to realize they are nuts and and sneak off. Like steal their truck or sth and get outta there.
There’s also no actual “cover of night” the midnight sun meant light all the time.
They totally drugged them to make sure they wouldn't be able to make their way out. And even if they did make it out to the road... Swedish roads are not very busy, particularly up north, so it's not like they could reliably hitchike or anything.

The deleted scenes make the deaths of the outsiders sacrificed seem slightly more deserving bc it showed deliberate or callous responses to their "transgressions". I noticed a lot of ppl commenting on how they wish they'd been left in for that reason; but, I think that's exactly why he took them out - It throws off our sense of order &robs us of that tiny "well, they kinda had it comin'" comfort.

It does make Christian even more of an asshole, which would make you root for his death instead of being horrified by it... which some people did anyways, apparently.
Mark is the only one who I felt had it coming. He was rude from the start and really sealed his fate by pissing on the tree. Connie and simon were reasonably upset. Josh did do what he wasn't supposed to, yes, but his actions weren't out of carelessness or disregard, but more so desperation. Marks fate was easy to swallow because he was an asshole, but we all still know it wasn't exactly deserved or warranted.

I mean I was clearly disturbed and was glad the main casts showed horrified reactions but after the lady explained how it's tradition for them, I was actually swayed into thinking that it was normal. I agree, A Capitalist AI. I am pleased that MidSommar has no musical parts aside from that dance scene. It is a well constructed slow burn horror movie that lets each layer of horror do it's thing. In the end, it all becomes a jaw dropping level of horror that lasts. This is better than a hard hitting horror conclusion that you promptly forget about once you leave the movie theater.

Katarina Skubi I meant they’re acting did not express such bliss ignorance. Any normal person would run and I think that was all going to the minds of the actors as they were trying to emotionally display the scene and really messed with there execution of liens towards each other.(a lot of pauses in dialogue, that shouldn’t happen with such a professional cast) I mean I understand the girl she’s perfect for a cult initiate. And her emotional state was somewhat convincing until the last scene. But their initial shock was such a jarring extreme I don’t see how any rational human wouldn’t think it’s all down cliff from here. And the actors know that. This is a prime movie of “why is that person doing that”, these actors jobs are to convey convincingly why they would act irrationally. It seems to challenging for them because it was too irrational. The art is honestly the only good thing about this and it’s borrowed, and the subtext is so subtext it hardly matters after a point, either your a Easter Hunt, or a movie.

I think it’s important to remember that if you think the ending with Dani is girl power and what happened to Christian isn’t totally and utterly tragic (being coerced by unknown, outside forces to have sex with a girl he’s not chosen by his own will but by the cult) you are susceptible to cult tactics, brainwashing and grooming. That’s exactly how Mr. Aster wants to trap you into sympathizing with Dani’s decision and ultimately agreeing with what happens to Christian even though he had no control since he was literally drugged the whole time, and of course the supernatural forces (Maja’s love spell and rune placed under his bed without consent) controlling him thru the cult.

You could argue that Christian kept Dani in a dark drugged and trapped place for years too by treating her like shit and selfishly never being honest and letting her go so she could find real love. But holding on just enough to not have to deal ‘being the bad guy’ or regret if he changed his mind (as he says at the bar table). He was a selfish coward and a shitty emotionally manipulative and gaslighting person not only to Dani but his friend who he stole his thesis from and threw under the bus as soon as the book went missing. No he doesn’t deserve to die a horrible cult death but there are reasons ppl, and especially women who have been treated horribly by partners aren’t exactly mourning him.

Of the people who I've seen cover this movie and the linked traditions, I think this is the most closely accurate one. As a Swede, I actually thought ättestupa was a thing that happened in the past. Must have gotten it twisted with the hammer-thing. Having grown up in Hälsingland I grew up hearing the song Hårgalåten quite a lot. Love it, it is hauntingly beautiful. I am also so, so glad that they used actual swedes for the townspeople.
As an American who seen a ton of horrors this movie sucks. The only interesting part is the beautiful culture and the interesting traditions. Which eventually gets fogged between wicker man BS and terrible acting and reacting. They use these great and amazing aspects of the sweed culter as a face plate for a B-movie script. Of course they used sweeds they need people to speak Swedish.

I felt as if Dani chose Chris as a sacrfice as a sort of mercy kill. He was paralyzed and his vocal chords were cut, he is stuck in a crazy cult. That's no life, so I interpreted it as if she wanted to 'save' him from his misery.

The directors cut of this movie is amazing and gives a different film experience. The first time you watch, it's easy to be focused only on the POV characters, but on subsequent watches, you start to notice how weirdly the entire cult behaves and how they are all in on it.
Something I didn't actually get before watching this video (kind of obvious in a rewatch) , is that when the group first arrived to the cult (before we knew it was a cult) everyone was greeted with a "welcome!", but Dani was greeted with "Welcome home!", forshadowing yet again that Dani was bound to stay with the cult at the end of the movie

As a former member of a cult myself and watching this for the first time yesterday I can't help noticing how many similarities there are with my past experiences. This movie really freaked me out, it was almost like watching back again interactions and feelings already felt before. This is defenetly disturbing.....

The opening minutes of this movie are some of the most disturbing and unsettling moments I’ve ever had watching a movie. Dani’s sister’s face haunts my nightmares as well as Dani’s absolute despair within her screams and sobs. 😞

@@Kimkong2 same, I watched hereditary in cinema without knowing what to expect, I was pretty traumatised so knowing this is the same film director and from what I'm seeing here in this analysis video, I know that if i watch this my feeling of regret will be stronger than my current curiosity. Good thing i saw this YT video actually because I had been a bit curious about this film while not knowing anything about it (not even that it was a horror movie) meaning i would have been even more disturbed than people who at least knew in advance that it was a horror film.
The reason why i was curious about it is because one of the old people sarificed is played by Björn Andrésen a man who is famous for his sad life story.
He was a young pretty boy in the 60s who became so famous for his beauty that he had a major influence on the evolution of the shojo manga genre and was basically the reason for the pretty boy trope in anime/manga.
But he was repeatedly sexually abused and traumatised by the movie/modeling industry and it broke his sanity and this movie midsommar was sort of his return on screen after disappearing for decades, and since the movie cover looked like a happy summer movie I thought "oh sweet, this looks like a happy setting for a come back, I might watch!". God I dodged a bullet!
This film was originally given an NC-17 by the MPAA. According to Ari Aster, around 30 minutes was cut from the final film mainly due to content. The director's cut released shortly after its theatrical run restores this footage.
Most of the Swedish dialogue spoken by the Hårga natives is deliberately not subtitled, in order to create the sense of isolation for the audience and especially for the foreign visitors.
When the film was released in Sweden, rather than eliciting fear in the audience, many people laughed. Many Swedish critics praised the film as an excellent black comedy.
Mark displays an extreme phobia of ticks, which is based on Ari Aster's real-life fear of bugs and illness. Like Mark, Aster wore two pairs of socks over his jeans to ensure he would not receive bug bites.
Despite the Swedish setting, the film was mostly shot in Hungary.
Dani's surname is Ardor (visible on the computer screen in several shots), Latin for "flame."

During the meal where meat pies are served, Christian has a glass of reddish juice while everyone else has yellow juice. An image earlier in the film suggests that this may be because his drink has been spiked with menstrual blood.
The strange mating ritual in the movie has very little to do with actual midsummer celebration in Sweden. It is however a fact that the 9 out of the 10 most common birthday dates in Sweden are all during April. 9 months after midsummer and July, the most popular month for summer vacations, that is.
This is the fifth A24 film to be released nationwide without a platform release prior. The others were The Witch (2016), Free Fire (2017), It Comes At Night (2017), and Hereditary (2018).
Much to the chagrin of Swedish horror fans, the film was not released during midsummer in Sweden, but a few weeks afterwards.

If this happens every 90 years, how did Pelle have a photo of last years May Queen (and indeed there was an entire wall of May Queens, signifying that the ritual happens regularly). Also, I think we are meant the infer that Pelle's parents were sacrificed in one of the ceremonies when he mentions that he watched his parents burn to death. This also could not have happened if the festival was only observed once every 90 years. Anything I missed that might make these points make sense?
So I was a bit confused about it as well but I watched another explanation video on the movie before this one and that kind of cleared it for me. So the basic ritual happens every year. The singing and dancing. But the sacrilegious ceremony happens only after 90 years. The outsiders are probably brought in every year for breeding purposes, they're probably drugged and are made to mate with the women but the sacrificing of 9 people, 4 of which are outsiders is only done once 90 years.
As far as his parents burning in fire.. Pelle said after 72 or 76 the elders are killed so maybe his parents got themselves killed by fire or jumped off the cliff or something. I don't really have an explanation for that one.
Apparently it’s only the sacrificing that’s every 90 years. An even simpler possibility is that the 90 year thing is nothing but a lie to lure victims in to something so “rare”.

I think one of the things that spun me out most with this movie was the hallucination animations throughout pretty much the whole thing - one of the only movies to accurately portray what things tend to look like for most people on mushrooms 😅

Ari Aster and Jordan Peele both different styles of directing but equally great. They have been hitting it out of the ball park lately with these movies. I'm never usually a horror movie fan but these movies are very hard to miss.
What a fantastic and unique horror film. The only “inconsistency” that stuck out to me was how Mark was supposably an anthropology student, yet was so confused about the backlash he received from peeing on a sacred tree. I get he was the “fool” out of the group but you would think he would understand that quite clearly. Doesn’t take away from the film at all tho, just something I thought was strange.

You left out the mystical components. For example, during the "Pole Dance" ritual, Dani was momentarily able to speak their language! Occult magic assumed real in this movie.
It wasn't their language though, I'm pretty sure it was all just gibberish.

The element of moving from trauma surrounded by people who don't really understand or care about your trauma, into a place of PTSD, and then overcoming it hit close to the bone. Her sister remains with her in the landscape, forever, but her sister is no longer giving her nightmares and day-mares. That is the symbolism that really struck with me.

I don't know why but man this movie has become one of the best horror films to come out in quite some time. It's so captivating and keeps you engaged the whole 2 hours and 20+ minutes.
Considering how brutally Dani's sister died i believe Harga killed her and parents as a part of plan to make Dani join community. Putting her in such emotional state and cuttings bonds with her previous life.
I dont think theyd have killed dani's family, her sister wasnt bound and only had a mask on to kill herself and the hoze to kill their parents. The death of her family and subsequent grief leads to her vulnerability which the Harga friend (cant remember the guys name) notices. This then makes him realize it may he possible to convert her to the cult

@@Cerulean0987 he is at an entirely different location during the murder/suicide, as seen when christian gets calls on the same night and Pele is right beside him during these events in the diner. Its a neat conspiracy but the logistics of it just don't make sense with the timeline of events in the movie. I still say the only reason Dani was chosen by the harga is because of the vulnerable state she was in due to the deaths of her family, that is the mental state that cults look for when attempting to recruit members. Dani was invited by Christian (he says he something about her likely not actually joining them) and then Pele begins grooming her towards the harga

Maybe it’s a reality is unrealistic thing but to start the car, make sure it gets into her parents room, then take one tube to her room, _tape the thing to her mouth_ before she passes out? I can handle monsters, ghouls, and the like in movies with no problems. To me, Midsommar is one of the most truly horrifying movies out there. The murderous cult thing is quite real and each of these deaths, this situation, could realistically happen. To me, that is more terrifying than any other kind of horror film any day of the week. I have rarely ever been as unsettled as I was at the end of this movie.
Something I loved about hereditary is how often their most scary scenes were in broad daylight and in places where any horror movie character would consider safe, lots of people, public, light, sun. I'm glad they kept up with that.
If you don’t like slow burn thought provoking horror, this isn’t for you. For the rest of us, it’s brilliant.

Aster is wild bro his films are so so trauma inducing and the fact in both hereditary and midsommar there’s no way out. They’re all stuck in their situation until they meet their inevitable doom. Also another mention that doesn’t have themes of murder with their inevitable doom but in his short film ‘the strangest thing about the johnsons’, the dad is stuck being tortured and r@p3d by his son with no mental way out as he always sees himself as the one in the wrong which is so heartbreaking

I don't know if it was just me but I had a real problem with how hyper-emotional the main character was and how sensitive she was to everyone but had no one was sensitive to her. in real life people have real friends and I understand how some friends don't recognize, like the mental trouble that you're in, but all of her friends like literally did not take into account like the personal pressure that she was dealing with and I think that was everyone's undoing. But I also think that makes this a very relevant personal connection story that I think we all need to pay attention to cuz everyone's going through some crazy s*** and she was going through some craziness and then she literally decided to go nuclear at the end and I respect it. I would have killed that mother f***** to
My “friends” acted the same way when I was going through extremely tough stuff. They ditched me and gave me excuses and it was honestly ridiculous. The point is not all “friends” are/will be good friends to you back, sometimes you learn the hard way
When someone goes through deep trauma (loosing family) sometimes they will choose to be with anyone to make them feel less alone. She fell in with a bad crowd at a bad time.

Hard to say... since NONE of her friends were depicted in the storyline. (Besides the one VERY SUPPORTIVE PHONE CALL SHE WAS” ON) The guys were NOT her friends. And though they didn’t necessarily like her, they were sensitive to her emotions. That bit where she is tripping is so well done. I had a bad trip on Acid and mushrooms in my life.... Words can describe how horrific it is to have a bad trip. All your worst nightmares realised in a moment and you can't walk away....
