    I think what disturbed me the most in this movie was how Christian was raped.
    I understand he's a shitty guy who eventually wanted to pursue the young girl, but he didn't. He was drugged heavily and forced into doing it.
    It's sad how a lot of people see this as cheating when it's actually rape.

      people don't seem to realize that another form of rape is the victim being drugged up and not being sober enough to consent because they're not in the right state of mind at all. which is what happened to christian. and then how society treats sexual assault cases where the victim is a guy. it's really sad.

    The thing is, literally anyone can be manipulated into a cult no matter how strong your will is or if you think that you would recognize every sign. So while we’re thinking “me personally, I would have noticed this and started doing this”, in reality the characters were probably experiencing a lot of cultural shock and were disoriented from all the drugs and rituals. When they’re feeling so confused, the cult members swoop in and comfort them. Honestly unless you’re a Sherlock Holmes cult expert I don’t think Midsommar is survivable.

    • @cic1470
      @cic1470 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +433

      True, but that only applies if you respect foreign cultures. So, in theory, if you didn’t give a flying fuck about culture and traditions, you’d probably pick up on just about every red flag and/or strange occurrence in the village. Also also, you’d have to be pretty stupid to accept any unknown substance from anyone in an isolated/unmodernized village.

      I think the fact the group of "friends" were each assholes in general and to each other is what led to their downfall. If ANY of the men (apart from simon) showed a crumb of concern for their fellow peer, they would have noticed sketchy things was earlier in my opinion. Mark just wanted to bang a foreigner, and christian and josh were too focused on one-upping the other to pay attention to what was actually going on.

      Yeah, I feel like people are really missing the point if they’re happy for Dani at the end. Not merely has she completely submitted to the twisted culture, traditions, and morality of the Hårga, she is also 100% culpable for the death of Christian. He was drugged and manipulated into the act that she saw. Recall too that she and Pelle shared a deep kiss before any of that, yet for Christian’s betrayal, she allows him to be killed. Ultimately, she became as bad as her sister, murdering Chris, and I don’t think her mind could recover from that. So now she’ll either be sacrificed in the remaining six days of the festival (where was last year’s may queen?) or become Pelle’s wife and have all the kids the group needs to add new genetics. She’s now a prisoner both of the Hårga and of the choices she made - she can never go back to the real world.

      I love the interpretation. I kinda felt the same. I did find the directors interpretation cool though. Basically, he said this is a "family movie". Dani lost one family (her biological one), was "taken in" by another one that treated her poorly (horrible bf & his friends), then eventually finds her place within the cult (her new family). No one in her life understands her, nor do they truly care. But the cult does. The moment where all the women are crying with her, is a real cult tactic called Mirroring. It's meant to make one feel as important and as seen as possible. I found that interesting.

They are her bfs friends & they convince him to allow her to come, only because she just lost her entire family. They also didn't "frame" her bf. It's explained that they use an outsider every year to impregnate one of their women to keep a certain bloodline going, as well as to grow their peoples. They were using him & she happened to see it happening. Thats also explained by the director to really just be a lucky coincidence that she saw it. She was broken enough by that point, he was probably gonna die either way.

    I think that people forget that sometimes fear and survival instinct is really different for everybody. And seeing something so shocking early on can be used as a great way to divide and seek out who can be manipulated to stay forever. People don't usually have the time to think straight and realise they should act convincingly that they are okay and make a run for it when nobody is checking. Which actually could take a lot of time.

    My personal theory is that Pele was behind Dani's family being killed. He had his eyes on her and found her to be a perfect candidate for the cult, however, all of his plans would've been ruined had Dani and her bf broke up, not to mention in order for someone to be vulnerable enough to get trapped in a cult, they must be completely severed from their other relationships. Lastly, pele mentions that he too lost his parents and was raised by the cult, so this could very well be one of their recruitment models

    I experienced a cult like feeling as a former student at a Waldorf school- I got there when I was 11 and left with 19 without finishing my a level to make my A-level at a normal state school, this actually happened only a few months ago - the teachers were constantly love bombing their students and reminding them of how lucky they are to be here. At the same time they behaved incredibly toxic, yelling at us, degrading us. Our personality was totally shut off in order to indoctrinate us. And no i am not joking, this is real. They are teaches that don’t succeed in real life so they work at an alternative school where they can feel like they are doing something valuable. And it shows. At this place the pupils adopt unhealthy disorders and spiritual belief systems that are truly brain damaging. When I decided to leave the school, they made a great fuss about it, trying to explain how great their teachings are. It was insane, I felt like I got brainwashed. Lucky enough I am a very intelligent human being myself- without wanting to sound arrogant, sorry in advance- and was able to develop own logic against their indoctrinations, but I regret going there in the first place. I met people their who admitted needing a therapy after this experience and this just proves how sick this place is. The teachers like to call out mistakes and laugh about wrong doings. They compare students to one another, but when you call them out, they act as if they don’t know what you are talking bout, which is called gaslighting. Thing is, for people with depression or narcissistic disorder this place was great, because it gave you a reassurance that you are special - if you follow the rules or made any kind of great achievements. But you were either in or out. I was always out and therefore felt like an outsider. But now I understand that I simply realized that they were liars. Still it was hard to cope with a place like this where you are constantly drawn in by people who want to convince you they know what’s best for you. It os so creepy. I am ashamed of myself for getting too attached especially to this one female teacher who always acted like she looked after you and who got vey personal with the students. I thought she understood me more than anyone else and even told her- after I left the school- that I was in love with her. I immediately knew how this was just a reaction to her fake behavior towards me and of course regretted the whole thing. But I am especially angry at her, because she acts innocent and lurs students in to keep them at this school and shuts down negative critics.

Taking psychedelics while grieving the gruesome death of your family with your boyfriend and his friends that all secretly dislike you and want him to dump you in a scary unknown setting is TERRIFYING. I think the fact that they barely question where their friends went when they start disappearing is very meaningful to why the cult managed to get them so easily. It‘s obvious that Christian doesn‘t particularly care about Dani, but you can see that the whole group actually doesn‘t care about each other, which is contrasted by how united the Hårga are and how much they seem to care for Dani. The whole conflict of the movie is really just possible because no one cares about anyone.

    1. The director himself said this is a breakup movie, not a horror movie.
    2. Dani didnt invite herself on the trip. Her boyfriend invited her, and told the guys to act like they were with it.
    3. Pele was drawing the picture of Dani earlier, he slyly hid it when asked what he was drawing.
    4. Is that pubic hair tapestry in the director's cut?
    5. The old couple weren't thrown off the cliff. Nobody threw or pushed them off.
    6. Pele is grooming her. Yup.
    7. At the end of the movie, the elder spoke on a set number of sacrifices needed. All of the Americans almost fulfilled it.
    8. All of them were distracted mentally when Mark was lured away.
    9. You skipped the part that you can hear Connie screaming as she was drowned, by three different people, in three diff screen shots.
    10. Pele was the only one looking at Christian being offered the drugged drink.
    11. You missed the part that an outline of Dani's sister is in the trees as they carried her on the platform, right after she won May Queen.
    12. You missed that the whole movie is in the tapestry at the start of the film.

    That's the entire lure of cultism. To join some place where you feel you belong and are important because you lack those things in the life you're currently leading. In the Fourth Way, it is said, "a man may not change his mind unless he has become disappointed with his beliefs or is seeking a new belief." The only real way to break from a cult is become disappointed with it. Unfortunately, many cultists find their disappointment FAR too late...with generally deadly consequences.

    What many people miss: Trauma causes what we call "learned helplessness". It messes up your fight or flight response permanently, so that even when the door is open, you cannot leave. That is why people stay in abusive relationships when they have been abused as a child and that's why Dany can't leave after living through the trauma with her family.

    It’s interesting that the cult exploits each of the members’ flaws which lead to each of their downfalls. Josh’s curiosity and determination to get his thesis done gets himself caught and later killed. Mark’s lust and general stupidity leaves him completely oblivious to the angry villagers’ plot to turn on him. Chris’ total self-centered interests reach a high point in the climax as he drinks the “love potion” without ever questioning the repercussions of anything going on around him. And finally Dani’s grief had left her vulnerable to the sick manipulation the cult slowly places on her throughout the movie

    i don’t think that she “realized that that’s where she belongs”, i think she finally cracked. we can see a similar example in the Joker Movie when he’s on TV and realizes that his favourite host doesn’t respect him, just like everyone else. you can see him crack when he finally realizes that he’s going to kill him as revenge. Dani had a very similar moment in the last scene. i’ve seen so many people say “she’s finally at piece” or “she’s finally happy” but i think that she’s quite the opposite, and that that was actually her breaking point to where she couldn’t return.

He invites her because he’s hoping that she’ll say no instead of having an actual conversation with her, just to allow everyone to believe that going was her idea and let’s them be upset with her for “inviting herself” and ruining his trip. One way someone could leave is they could start a fire as a diversion. Leave with a very small bag with some food, water, and a knife from the kitchen. I noticed in the deleted scenes of the movie there's a river near the village. So instead of walking down the road which is what they expect I say float down the river on your back. I know how to float so it would be easy for me. As long as there's no Alligators which I don't think Sweden would have. floating down the river you would be better because of the following reasons 1. They couldn't use dogs to track your sent 2. Floating is faster than walking 3. You wouldn't get tired as fast 4. You would have access to fresh drinking water if needed 5. Most neighborhoods are built near waterways. What would you guys do?

    I think that contributes so much to her trauma and why she breaks down when she's reminded of her family. All she needed was time and someone to be actually be there and Christian neglected to do that. I mean yeah he was there but it's clear that he's drifting away from her.

    When I watched this movie, I thought the safest way out for anyone (May queen or not) would be to play along with the cult until one has the chance to go out and find outsiders, just like the guy who drew the portrait. It might be a long wait, but if one's morals and sanity are strong enough, one could bring the authorities to the cult without raising suspicions and ultimately, one could save hundreds of lives, as opposed to escaping, what gives the leaders from the cult a chance to strategize and get away with their crimes.

    • @grantgarbour
      @grantgarbour 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is true but at the end ot's pretty clear that 4 of the 6 outsiders were going to be sacrificed at the end of the ceremony. The only one capable of waiting it out would be Dani but if she wanted this route it would have been too late to save her "friends". However saving them wouldn't be high on my priority list since they barely seemed interested in saving themselves so if I were her I would buy time to leave. However again Dani was not in a good mental place for this movie and most likely found a home within the cult
