    So happy I found this video. My guest shower has been broken for over a year because I didn't want to spend the money for someone to fix it and didn't feel confident to cut the hole myself. After seeing you talk about the ready made access panel and your saying, "you can do it " at the end I was convinced I could .....and I did!

      @Anita Palaj the fixture was broken an the only way to change it was from the back which meant going through the wall on the other side of the bathroom.

    I'm a big fan of Leah. She has some great videos, sometimes a little 'slow' for experienced DIY'rs or pros, but gives great insight, tips & confidence to those much newer to general home repairs and even to the 'experienced'. On this video I wondered if she's ever tried the 'Walabot' instead of a stud finder. Sometimes a stud finder will not discover a 'fire stop' or stud if screws or nails are not present in the area to be used. Tapping 'knocking' on the walls does take a little experience to locate the proper 'thud', especially with various types of insulation are in the walls. I also was curious if the wall she worked on was the paint or wallpaper. Today, I found out that access panels are pre made for the purchase. Leah, you're terrific.

    Did an inspection hatch in the ceiling so my gas inspector could see the pipes or he would not give a cert. for the boiler. I was lucky the joists were exactly the same width as the hatch. Used a worx multi tool to cut out. Worked good. Glad i moved house. Getting the proffestinals in to do a full replacement in this house with all the certs in place. Good vid Leah

    Thanks for the video. Just a note: You don't have to worry about glue spilling over to the access panel itself because there's this 1/2" tall border separating the access panel from the frame.

      +Sidney Mathious You can buy a stud detector for pretty cheap. ;) Same thingy for finding any metal plumbing behind a wall and electricity cables. I too had to get me one of those, since the house we bought didn't come with a detailed scheme where everything was located. That little detector saved me from a bunch of headaches and having to redo everything. ^^

    You traced the entire width and length and then subtracted the backside panel size that fits inside the wall roughly 1 inch smaller all around. If you simply placed the panel against the wall, the backside inner panel that inserts into wall after hole is cut would force panel to stick out 1 inch allowing you room to simply trace around the exact cutout size with a pencil making a simpler and more accurate measurement to cutout. Also, I would not put adhesive on the wall itself as you did causing it to spill out and be messy when attached. Instead, put the adhesive around the outside of that same backside inner panel you traced around earlier so the adhesive would simply attach to the cutout portion of the drywall when installed. No mess.

    I neglected to watch your video before I installed my access panel. ☹️ I got it done; however, I glued the frame to the wall without the panel attached. Now I’m having trouble snapping all sides of the panel into the frame. Could it be out of level? The frame doesn’t exactly move, so how could it be crooked?

    Was that a plastic panel? Also how do you get into it? I did not see a handle. Does it open just by giving it a push? Great info. I wish I would have had that years ago with a slow shower leak that was behind my closet. What a mess that was. Thanks again.

      That one is a plastic panel, and the inner piece has 4 very small slots around the edge that you can use to pry it open with a flathead screwdriver (or a key, or a table knife - use what ya got!)

    Professionals came, installed my tankless water on demand so they had to cut a hole into the hall wall to access the gas line, they told me to buy an 8X8" 'cover', I can see half of the stud where they cut the hole, I haven't fixed it yet because I didn't know what to buy, as I was just going to buy a vent cover, then thought, "what if we needed to get in there", then I seen this video. I just hope because part of the stud is showing it won't prevent the assess panel from going in, if so what do I do, cut that part away on the panel? In my opinion they should have fixed it & not left me with a hole! Also there is a hole precut to turn off the shower plumbing in my bathroom left same way, at this time I just have a wood board covering it. I hope I can fins the correct size, this one is quite large.

    I love your videos but this one I did NOT LIKE! That is not a drywall saw nor a utility knife in the construction working tool collection that myself or anyone else I know of uses. that saw will cause someone to do damage to plumbing, electrical, or the other side of the wall. and that razor "knife" can cause them to hurt themselves badly cause the blades snap with the wrong pressure or twist. but like I said I do love your videos!... just not this one.

    • @seejanedrill
      @seejanedrill  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Rex Dove Hi Rex, you are absolutely right about the utility (razor) knife. The thing is, I couldn't find my regular utility knife, so I just grabbed something. As for the drywall saw, it actually is a drywall saw, and I prefer it to the keyhole type saw because it makes a straighter cut. But you do have to be careful that you don't disturb what is behind the wall. Thanks for your comments. Regards, Leah
