These two songs were recorded together on July 25th, 1969 for the side two medley on Abbey Road (aka The Long One). The lineup was Paul McCartney on bass guitar, John Lennon on Framus Hootenanny 12-string acoustic guitar, George Harrison on lead electric guitar, and Ringo Starr on drums
The Framus Hootenanny was the same 12-string heard on classic songs earlier in their career- Help, I've Just Seen A Face, I'm A Loser, and You've Got To Hide Your Love Away. After retiring it around 1965-67, John brought it back, just for these two songs
It's not 100% clear which guitar George Harrison used for these sessions, it was either his 'Lucy' Les Paul or his Rosewood Telecaster. The beginning of Polythene Pam features a very warm crunchy neck pickup part, which sounds more characteristic of a Les Paul. But his guitar solo at 0:48 is very bright and more Fender-y sounding
George was definitely plugged into a Fender Twin Reverb amp, the main amp used on Abbey Road. They are 85 watts and very loud. It is harder to make these amps crunch up, especially with a single coil Fender. I concluded that George used his Les Paul, but that he used very bright settings on the amp
There is a slapback-delay effect on George's guitar throughout the song, which was applied after the recording session using tape machines. During the Polythene Pam guitar solo you also hear volume swells happening at various points. This was also done after the recording session using console faders, not with a volume pedal. I confirmed this by listening to the original mix of the Medley, heard on the Abbey Road super deluxe box set. There were no volume swells at that stage of mixing
George overdubbed a second guitar for the descending lines, which segues the first song into the second. At 1:13 you hear the overdubbed guitar, which is very crunchy and definitely sounds like a Les Paul
Here are some interesting guitar parts that occur-
0:11 George slides up to only the 11th fret (Eb instead of E)
0:18 John mistakenly pauses, playing a C chord quieter
0:31 George slides up to only the 11th fret again (Eb instead of E)
0:37 George mistakenly hits an F note on the D-string 15th fret
0:49 George switches to bridge pickup for the guitar solo
1:33 George switches to middle position pickup for one line
2:01 John ends his A chord later than George
2:37 George switches to middle position for one line
2:52 John mistakenly plays a Bb note in his D minor (3rd fret G)
I'm using my 1967 Gibson B-25-12 acoustic guitar for John's part. It has a smaller body size, like the Hootenanny. I'm mic'ing it with a Neumann TLM-103 condenser. The Beatles almost exclusively mic'd their acoustics with Neumann U67's and 87's
For George's guitar parts I'm using my 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard. It's plugged into an Analogman King of Tone overdrive pedal, into my 1974 Fender Pro Reverb amp. I turned the bright switch ON for the main guitar part
I'm using an Abbey Road J37 Tape plug-in for the slapback delay effect. It is set to 195ms. I also manually created volume swells in Pro Tools, for his Polythene Pam guitar solo
My Gear:
1967 Gibson B-25-12
2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard (OX4 Pickups)
Analogman King of Tone (boost side for main guitar, drive side for overdubbed guitar)
1974 Fender Pro Reverb (Weber 12F150 Speakers)
Neumann TLM-103

Definitely George Harrison had a magic touch.
I never said he was the best when people would argue who is the best ( Hendrix, Clapton, evh etc) but I always said he was the most appropriate player for the song.
It used to be a stupid theory, but now I'm starting to be sure that George's and John's souls live inside this man's body.
😈
XD
She Came In Through The Bathroom Window is THE song that made me want to play electric guitar. John was awesome with the rhythm and really drove the song. The lead guitar was just magical on this song. George was so perfect with his sense of timing of when to play what. His guitar parts never overshadowed the song, the guitar complemented the songs perfectly.
Hearing side 2 of Abbey Road changed my life. Awesome covers lately
Side 2 of Abbey Road, to my ears, is the greatest music ever produced by mankind.
George’s lead work on She Came In Through The Bathroom is amazing, some of his best. Great cover as usual.
Simple elegance.. George never practiced.. just showed up and did THIS.. and you presented it perfectly.. thank you
I've always loved that electric guitar lick 01:23
funny enough it the same bit from I’ve got a feeling just moved up the fretboard!
Fantastic job, well done as always. I continue to be fascinated by George's guitar parts. He seems to find a completely unique style for every song.
Isn't that the truth? George is an amazing guitarist!
Awesome work. Polythene Pam probably one of the best Beatles rock songs, very short but very underrated. And you mastered it
I always appreciated George’s contribution to the songs, but your videos really highlight how creative he was. Super job!!!
This little delay, this tone. Man, everything is perfect. Cheers from a brazilian beatles fan 🇧🇷🤘🏻
Even the tone is spot on.
This man continues to have it! 🔥 🔥 🔥 Someone give this man a cold beer, he’s earned it!
Abby Road is the Beatles musical peak and made possible by George Harrison's amazing guitar playing.
Once again perfection Sam! Really like Georges part! AND a 12 string Hotennany for authenticity …. wow!
It’s a Gibson B-25 12 string, not a Framus.
Your ear for tone is unmatched.
The Beatles are beautiful, touching and "simple" at the same time ❤
This sounds amazing Sam! I never realized how much slapback delay there was on George’s parts, and also those fills that he does on SCITTBW actually look a lot trickier then they sound! As always, keep up the great work man!
And here they are! Can't wait for The End!
Taking a pause on the medley for now, I don't have all the gear (jazz bass) for the next songs
@@sampopkin Will you at next do something with your Gent again or what’s the plan?🙃😜
Yes something like that!
Just beautiful work, as always! Love the way you nailed the 12-string sound.
Fantastic, like a fine wine really.
Best beatles covers i've ever heard
Fantastic! Really enjoyed that!
Extraordinary, Sam - Thank you!
I LOVE THE TRANSITION IN THIS SONGGGG!!! AMAZING COVER SAM!!!
That was terrific as usual.
Great work , one of my favourite songs from abbey road
Fantastic. The most accurate cover that I've ever seen.
Dam so cool to see the return of the 12 string acoustic!
Absolutely brilliant!! Glad you kept the vocals in too, sounded perfect 🔥👍
Excellent music lesson ! Thanks !
So good! That tone is so damn close.
Wonderful.
What a terrific job! 👍
Wow! Great tones on the Les Paul!
I've waited so long for it, great job Sam!
Me too!
OMG, you nailed it again, kudos!
Bravo, Sam! Great cover as usual. Also with these covers you highlight how good and tasteful of a guitarist George was. Thanks!
Thanks- Sam, Detailed and spot on, as always.
You’re a musician and historian for all things Beatles. 🎧
Cool and excellent ! You are the best !
You are incredible, Sam. Great work as always.
Thanks
You get better and better, I enjoyed it.
Another phenomenal piece my friend 🙏
I love your videos so much. And THANK YOU for going into so much detail about the gear and effects used. You’re nailing the tones.
Thanks😁
It's stuff like this that helped me to record. Seeing how they would leave mistakes in the final takes allowed me to let go of "the perfect take" syndrome. Thank you Sam!
Awesome! good job.
Awesome mate!!😃😛I always had such a feeling that they used a 12 string on this tunes, especially Polythene Pam. It just has such a full, magnificent sound. Quite delicious.😍😛
I've been looking forward to this because no one has a 12 string guitar cover and I need one
Absolutely offensively good, incredible
Maybe the most aggressive Beatles guitar part ever. I think maybe even more so than Helter Skelter! Thank you for sacrificing your arm for this amazing cover!
Thanks Evy haha. Actually the hardest part was George’s hybrid picking during the verses of Bathroom Window. Gave me a big blister on my right ring finger
@@sampopkin So you’ve got blisters on your fingers in other words, eh?😜😂
Great cover man! Very good!
You really do a hell of a job on every one of these beatles vids. Your electric tones are just dead on.
awesome tone and playing. u nailed it!
Great playing! How it should be ! Raw and playful, thanks!
Nicely Done !!
Excellent ! I also like the stereo left/right 😊
All the best,
knarf from France 🎸🇨🇵
Very Nice !!!..😊👍👍👍
Nice one sam....covers for this song are rare!
i love how u cover she came in through the bathroom window. brings me back so much emotional vibes i'm crying😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
cheer me up please sam!
Great, now I have Polythene Pam stuck in my head for a whole week, thanks Sam 😂
Awesome cover as always 🤯
😂
That was perfect, now you get my sub
So enjoyable to watch Sam! Did not realize it was a 12 string acoustic…
Excellent job! Listening to the song like this for the first time, I am struck by the fact that with a bit less lead guitar this could have fit nicely on the American version of "Rubber Soul". The 12-string almost gives it a folk rock sound. Not as recorded, of course, but i now see that it could have been. Thanks for showing this.
Brilliant songs and all that, but one of my favourite aspects of The Beatles, and Abbey Road is one of the best examples, is how they always got a great guitar tone and sound, it always seemed to be just right, tone, distortion, echo. Paperback Writer is a fabulous example, absolutely brilliant video by the way.
Your playing is spot on and your tone sounds incredible. As an Abbey Road enthusiast I really appreciate your attention to detail.
Thank you!
Amazing as always! Sounds just like the record!
Thanks David
Awesome cover as usual Sam! I believe that there are photos of George on his Les Paul Lucy for this song on Beatlesebooks, if I am not mistaken. I can't wait for Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/(and especially) The End!
Those photos are from July 23rd, which was the session for The End. Two days before Polythene/Bathroom Window
He privately told me he’s holding off on finishing the medley as he doesn’t have a Jazz Bass
Wow! You fuckin nailed it!!!
That George could play his timing is the key
She Came In Through The Bathroom Window is probably my favorite song off the melody
Cool! I had no clue about that F#m in She came into the bathroom window
Love this - and nailed all the details, as always. The 12-string is bang-on. One Beatles writer (MacDonald?) guessed the big D-A-E strums by John were influenced by The Who's then-current hit Pinball Wizard, which is another song it'd be awesome to see Sam do perfectly!
That’s interesting, because John references Tommy by the Who in the outtake of Polythene Pam. He was saying Ringo’s Tom Tom drums were like Dave Clark or Keith Moon
You can hear on the Escher demos, recorded in about May 1968 before the White Album that John was already doing D-A-E with big emphasis on the E as a turnaround. It seems like it was already there from the beginning.
@@reginaldperiwinkle True, though I think the reference is to the single strums like those that open the song, which aren’t on the Esher version. The quote also suggests MacDonald thought Pinball Wizard was played on a 12-string (it sounds like at least two tracks of Pete’s J-200 instead).
Oh yeah!
Yessirr
Sich a cool solo on PPam Sam!
Una de las rolas de The Beatles que se apegaba mucho al estilo de los Rolling Stones
Waiting this for 2 weeks! ʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ
YES!!! I have been waiting so much for this and it makes me so happy to see you back on it! I assume we can expect a full version of the medley uploaded when we get the last part right? ;>
Yes I’m taking a pause now before I go back to golden slumbers-her majesty. Need a jazz bass first
@@sampopkin I would lend you my Fender Jazz if I could!
Wonderful job there! Lots of chromatic stuff going on.
Thanks for all the nice touches on this. I wonder if John really played the Bb note in the Dm by mistake, or whether it is just a nice touch. The Bb seems in key to me and it is actually consistent with the vocal harmony, which goes from a G note to an F note, so John is implying some harmonies with intervals of sixths. It's actually clever.
Either way, it works!
It’s all confidence And Sam has it
I have shit confidence haha
Wow. Sounds perfect and super-informative for guitar players. Where were you 40 years ago when I was learning guitar?
Haha thanks. I was still 10 years away from being born
@@sampopkin Everyone's got an excuse... 🙂
❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥
I was always tempted to think it was the Tele as well. But it 100% sounds like humbuckers with that extra treble. You dont get that crunch with P90s. And you can definitely hear that '50s influence coming through. Chet Atkins, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins and the like. Their likeness really shines through in George's little solos.
Thanks! Yeah I was surprised how accurate it sounded the second I turned the bright switch on
@@sampopkin are you sure George switched to the middle position on "but now she sucks her thumb and wonders"? It sounds like he has the bridge pickup on the whole time.
@@elirosen1391 based on the isolated tracks it definitely sounds like middle for a few of those lines. But it’s possible it was just bridge
Wow, Great cover, and if It wasn´t for the video, I would´ve said those were the original tracks
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩
Kindly do the Stones’ paint it black
I've always thought the delay on the guitar here was really unique in The Beatles' catalogue. Even songs like Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby with vocals full of slap didn't apply it to the guitar. I'm sure there's another song or two where they used it, but I can't think of any right now.
Could imagine lee mavers singing this
Nicely done w/quick trigger fingers to change pickup selection on the LP Std. I always thought this had really nice guitar flourishes and very Macca like lead parts.
Thanks! George was on 🔥
@@sampopkin I guess, but those parts sound very Macca, although all the double stops are clearly Harrison
If you listen to the outtake from Abbey Road box set you clearly hear the live backing track with Paul on bass and George on guitar
Great job, but one thing I never understood about guitar players (I play bass) is the movement of the left hand to the end of neck between phrases. When their part is at rest, they invariably move that hand around when nothing i being played. I suppose with my instrument there's generally continual motion in the middle of songs so this habit is not something we tend to develop
That’s interesting, I play bass too but am mainly a guitarist. I’m not sure why that is the case. Clapton is a good example of someone who moved up and down the neck quickly all the time. He even would slide up to a note at the 14th (ish) fret after finishing a lower note, just to spice things up
I've been eagerly awaiting this one! Almost no one does all of it on TH-cam (though I haven't checked lately). I've been playing this for almost 50 years, but I've never gotten George's part exactly right. And I've had a lifelong obsession about getting Beatles guitar parts EXACTLY right. Thank you! Ordering my 2nd Analogman pedal now, thanks to you! Do you make tabs?
Thanks so much! You’re ordering a King of Tone? There is a 5 year waitlist for it currently but I waited 2.5 years back in 2019. Appreciate your kind words
I offer paid zoom lessons if you want to message me on FB or insta. Tabs can be a part of that
@@sampopkin My Analogman Man Sun Face Fuzz pedal should arrive any day now! But, wow, as you say, there is a LONG waitlist for the King Of Tone! Will order anyway. Yes, I'm interested in tabs for George's part! And I sent you a donation!
Oh man Sunface is incredible. I used mine for You Never Give Me Your Money. You’re going to love it. Definitely worth the 5 year wait for KOT
Thank you so so much for donation! Wow
@@sampopkin YW! I ordered the Sun Face Fuzz because of your video!
Really nailed the details here. Fantastic work. Do you mind sharing how you miced the electric guitar amp?
Thanks! I’m using a Neumann TLM-103 condenser towards the edge of the amp’s grill. About 8” or so away from it
Im guessing this is the last medley cover for a bit since this is the end of the first half
But i must say these covers have been amazing so far
I don't have a jazz bass, which I believe was used on Golden Slumbers. So this will be my last medley stuff for a while, until I find one
@@sampopkin cant wait!!
@@sampopkin I thought the Ricky was used for Golden Slumbers, nope?😉😜
@@sampopkin golden slumbers is my favorite song on the album so don't let me down 😂great cover once again tho!
Hey bro great cover as always, i was wondering if you can do a revolution cover to see how accurate you get it, does not have to be next video but when ever you have time
Will definitely do that soon
@@sampopkin thanks take care
Can u please make Come Together?
the les paul sounded incredible!
what are your amp settings?
plugged into vibrato channel. bright switch ON
Bass- 3
Treble- 5.5
Vol- 2.5
And an Analogman King of Tone (boost side) pedal
Superb. But here’s my question on this and other Beatles solos that George has played. Does he create them or does Paul write them?
Other than Michelle, which was written by George Martin, Harrison wrote all his solos
I’m sure there were a few times Paul gave input though
Fantastic. Did they actually reverse and record it back to back? There is continuity in the sound and approach.
Yes they recorded You Never Give Me Your Money on its own.
Sun King and Mean Mr. Mustard were recorded together at the same time back to back
And Polythene Pam and Bathroom Window were also recorded back to back
@@sampopkin Thanks!
By the way. The cover is excellent. I always though there were more acoustics but this sounds right. I just was playing on 6 strings.
❤You kept the sliding mistakes 😉
L and G the humble Sam 😉
