Excellent advice! I recently got out of a huge rut. My scores had dropped to 100-140s. I was extremely frustrated and couldn't get anything to work correctly. I finally decided to stop getting angry and go back to playing for fun. Not setting any big goals that could frustrate me if I didn't obtain them. My PSO noticed that I had changed my throw and helped me get back to the basics. Now I'm throwing 180s-223 and just enjoying the game. I've thrown a lot of games over 200 with a variety of balls. For someone who started bowling this January, and never had a lesson, I feel like I'm finally getting somewhere.
Awesome tips! I went from a 212 avg to the 160s all bc I was trying to "correct" too much. While I definitely needed to work on my release to save my elbow, I do believe I just need to get back to what was working before my slump started. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
"Fix Your Slump" .. how did you know I am in a slump? .. man, you guys are GOOD !!! .. THIS is exactly what I need! .. Thank you so much! Happy Thanksgiving!! .. and my birthday, so this is a GREAT birthday present for me! .. Thank you Kyle !!!
Thanks coach, you just reminded me I don't remember much of my honor scores. This year I've started like crap and staid there. I've been trying everything and once I feel good about one aspect of my game something is off in other places. Haven't shot over 177 all year. And now I remember back and what did all my best games have in common? Lots of beer! I haven't been drinking this year because I'm the DD. Guess I'm telling the guys to get another driver. Thanks again coach.
When I find myself in a slump, I give my brain a positive order: _Do less._ I try not to get angry or frustrated. Someone I used to bowl with a long time ago told me to never forget: The last strike I threw will not be the last strike I ever throw. While I'm bowling, I try really hard to keep my emotions level; don't get too excited, don't get too upset. Good or bad outcome, same thing...just focus on preparing yourself to execute the next shot.
Great timing for this tip - Last year in the second half of the season, I was averaging 170's and now I'm hovering in the 150s in my leagues. I can sure use these tips to try getting back to where I was six months ago.
Cool video Kyle. I stopped getting angry while bowling about 15 years ago. I have no problem getting any of my balls to hit the pocket and my pre-shot routine makes it so I throw each shot the same way. However, my struggle is finding the right ball at the right time to go through the pins correctly to string strikes. Some weeks it is easy and I roll a 753 series and other weeks are more difficult and I roll a 580 series. 650-680 is a good set for me. It's my bowling journey, figuring it out. It makes bowling both fun and frustrating.
St. Chux house shot is brutal because outside of 8 or so is OOB since they installed the new lanes and that's exactly where you normally want to bang off in a StL wall.
One thing I've been playing with is when I miss my mark 2-3 times in a row, there's most likely something mechanical going on so I just grab a different ball and play an entirely different zone for a reset. Doesn't matter if the shot is 15 to 10 if I can't get anywhere near it so maybe inside 20 slower may trip the breaker.
Three weeks ago, I bowled a 658 in my Tuesday league, and I do remember just being dialed in and focused. I don't remember the individual frames, but I remember I was stringing strikes together and just feeling like I knew what the lanes wanted me to do. Fast forward to this week, and I only managed a 466. My spare game completely collapsed, and I've been obsessing over it, because my goal this year was to be the best spare shooter in my league. My frustration definitely affected my execution and dragged my final game down more than anything else. Came back to practice on Wednesday and just drilled the heck out of spares I know I can make regularly (oddly, that includes the 10 pin), just to get my confidence back. Once I felt good about those, I moved on to the spares I missed (6-10, 3-6-10, 2-4-5, washout). I'm feeling better about going into league next week just having done that.
After a bad couple years after never getting sleep due to a newborn that just never slept, I put my game back together actually thinking about something I did wrong a lot that never actually hurt me. That was falling off to the right after the shot. I was like why don’t I do that anymore and then when I did it, I was happy and things just started clicking . Likely, i was moving faster, but who really knows. So, we all got something in our game that is not picture perfect I bet. If you get lost you just might find yourself by leaning into your typical faults.
Also it helps having teammates that motivates you instead of bringing them down some of us do this for fun which sometimes the league bowlers somehow forget that
For sure. I was bowling on a team with a guy who thought he was great. If he had a bad night he’d blame it on everything but himself and sometimes walk out. And if I bowled poorly he’d say “ your the sheets” to my face. Well I got in a terrible rut, always feeling pressured. On my other league I was doing great. I could not wait for it to be over with him. Well eventually nobody wanted him on their team and for his remaining seasons he just subbed. Eventually he had knee surgery and quit bowling. So yes as my current teammate always says, and he is a very good Bowler, “There is no I in the word team, we hold each other up”. Last week he and my other teammate were having a horrible night. We were getting trounced. So game three I promised myself to hold them up. Ended with a 240.
I actually fell asleep watching this video, as I was watching it at about 1:00AM. I woke up the next morning and went to a little fun tournament. I shortened the first step and stayed in the shot a little longer and I was throwing the ball so much better. Now I hope it translates to league.
I’m in a major slump . My average was 207 in summer league. It’s 183 in fall league . In seven weeks.. I haven’t thrown a 600 yet. I pull across my body constantly . An older bowler in my league said it’s all in my head :(
I was doing the same thing, then a friend told me to be sure and pull my elbow in. I now pretty much rest my elbow on my hip on my set up stance, and it has worked. Also, keeping my forearm towards the pins.
Wish I could practice at my center, but they got rid of game prices. The hourly rate is 36 bucks, and the specials they have start at 7pm, by then majority of the lanes are taken. It's annoying
That sucks. I hate hourly paid bowling, especially that high. As a league bowler at a Bowlero, we get 2 free games a week and extra games are only $3.50. Game rates are between $6 and $11/game. Expensive hobby.
That’s the way they are all going. Our incredible lanes were bought by Bowlero. None of my old buddies bowl anymore because they are charging $40 an hour. I am told other Bowlero’s are not as bad. My center I bowl at now is closing due to not being able to get parts and they’re not manufacturing new setters. They are going to open a much smaller string pin center with hourly rates. Sad. I guess I’ll retire from it and work in the yard.
"Don't think, just do" is what I always told my son when he played sports and was just off.. I never thought to do that myself. So now I tell myself that because I overthink everything.
I’m a 215 avg and last league night I had 16 after the first 2 frames and proceeded to to throw 19 strikes in a row. I don’t remember half those strikes but I can tell you what I did those 2 open frames
What if none of those issues are what are wrong? What if you are hitting your target consistently, making virtually all of your spares with ease but just can't hit the pocket and when you do it simply does not strike? And what if in addition to not striking, you try numerous balls looking for one that will provide good carry and it seems they all do the same dud thing, hit the pocket but not strike? How can you pull yourself out of this garbage reaction slump?
I went through a slump a few months back. I couldn't double. Couldn't buy a double with a million bucks. I was so frustrated, that it hurt every part of my game. I always count on at least one double to assure myself of a 200+ game if I can at least spare out. But I just couldn't do it. Three nights of leagues in one week. Not one stinking double. And because of it, I stopped worrying about spares. Bad. Bad. Bad. How did I fix it. I came in and bowled left handed. I suck at left handed, I mean I can bowl that way for fun and shoot some 140s, but nothing to write home about. But I just wanted to see something different. Anything. And guess what, I bowled a double and had a decent game for lefty. And I told myself, if can bowl a double left handed, I can do it right handed. So I bowled the next game right handed. Nope.. no double. But, I kept my mind on making spares. No missed ten pins. No missed seven pins or eight pins. So, back to left hand. And frame one and two.. strikes. And in stead of waiting I quickly changed back to right hand. Strike.. hmmm. Stone eight.. ahh crap.. but it was there. Strike. Strike, Strike... Strike... stone nine.. Strike and spare. It was as if that little mental game I had struggled with was gone, cuz I found some humor in being able to bowl a double with my left hand. I don't suggest you try this. But, it made me laugh, and remember bowling is supposed to be fun. Anyways, the fellows at league were happy to see me back on my game to say the least. And I was very happy to be rolling again.
So your bowling ball hasn't been cleaned or resurfaced for a year or so and you just aren't getting the carry. Maybe it is time to go to your pro shop and get it cleaned and resurfaced. Maybe it isn't you but your equipment.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!
I don't get angry when I miss my mark. I get angry when I do exactly what I want and get a 7-10 on a good pocket hit.
I feel you man. Or a stone 9 or 8 😂😢
Or when I destroy the pocket and leave a 7 pin.
I’m the opposite
Been there!! And I'm great at leaving solid 10 pins when I hit the pocket. 🥴
99% of 7-10s happen on pocket shots 😀
I been in a slump for 3 months lol. Appreciate you making this vid. Happy Thanksgiving

As I was watching this, I thought of my own slump/frustration. Really good 'process' video, and gave me a few things to try next time I bowl league.

C'mon guys. If you're trying to show slower steps, don't have a medium camera shot which doesn't show your feet.
