This is a really refreshing take on her, where she really breathes. Not where she's in eternal opposition to Catherine De Medici, yet again. Thank you for doing this justice to both women, choosing not to flog and perpetuate the endless soap opera of plotting rivals for one man and for influence that they are usually reduced to, so often one good, one evil, as if life and history were so morally unambiguous.
Thank you, that really means a lot to me - that was absolutely my intention for the video. 😊 I admire both women, and think they were both doing the absolute best they could with where they found themselves in life, in the time they lived. I'm sure there were moments of jealousy and rivalry, but there was also obvious collaboration in the unique triangle they found themselves, and something maybe bordering on respect between them?
Among the maîtresses en titre, she's one of my personal favourites. She knew her place and did not directly oppose Catherine. Yet at the same time, I don't blame Catherine for getting rid of her. In the end, despite being virtuous and beautiful, the real Queen was Catherine.
I definitely have admiration for both Catherine and Diane, and they were both in somewhat different positions, with forceful personalities trying to navigate through a male-dominated world. There was definitely a sort of respectful synergy between them while Henry was alive, but obviously it didn't take long for Catherine to remove Diane when needed. 😂
I first came across Diane de Poitiers while reading the Royal Diaries - Mary Queen of Scots. (dating myself here lol) While I was an older teen at the time, I still got the biggest ick from this woman and her back story with Henri. I am at neutral, at best, with feelings toward Catherine De Medici, and I don't hate Diane, or view her as "evil" or "the bad guy"..... but like, I'm a mom now. I have a young son. I look at her and Henri and the ick is still there. I don't wonder if she didn't gr**m him. Did it happen purely along a "natural" (as much as that relationship can be looked at as natural) way, or did she see a young, traumatized, impressionable boy with the makings of a crush and guide him along the route that would best serve her? I guess we'll never know. But this woman will never not give me the ick.
I am in one hundred percent agreement with you. She completely groomed him so she could be the “power” behind the throne. I wonder if the same was done to Louis the XIV a hundred years later. There was a scene in the show Versailles, and yes I know it was mostly fiction but it still wouldn’t surprise me, where the “nanny” for a young Louis was giving him a you know.
It’s crazy how much the actress who plays Diane in The Serpent Queen looks like Diane in that painting. Excellent casting choice. I know they look for actors with a similar appearance but sometimes it’s tricky when all you have to go by are paintings.
Diane was the same age as Queen Claude, the Mom of Henri II. I'm sure she was close to Queen Claude and that maybe what drew Henri to her. She probably reminded him of his Mom who died when he was a little boy.
True, but alternatively many royal and aristocratic families also took advantage of young girls for their bloodlines as well. For political gain and power, marrying them off as early as 12 to do their 'wifely duties' to procure heirs, which many were in a rush to do as they were 35-65 years old. When women had no rights to themselves, could usually not hold land, money, were items to be traded and all but sold, women did what they had to do for themselves and their children.
Yeah, there's definitely that angle. I think, like with many things, it was complicated. It's very obvious from the connection she and Henry had, as well as all their shared interests and her hand in shaping him into the adult he became, would have meant there was real love between them. However, as you point out, there will absolutely have also been an element - for Diane - of using Henry to gain what she needed to suit her ambitions and intelligence. So you're totally right, but there's a lot of threads to it as well.
Although she seems to be one of better mistresses (better, I mean being respectful towards her lover's wife) But my opinion about her always sours down, because I deeply believe that she groomed Henri

Diane de Poitiers is an interesting figure in French history here are some suggestions for your next video Philippa of Lancaster, Queen of Portugal Catherine of Lancaster, Queen of Castile Eleanor of Viseu, Queen of Portugal Queen Isabella of Castile Margaret of Denmark Joan Beaufort, Queen of Scotland Anne of Brittany, Queen of France Empress Maria Theresa Eleanor of Castile, Queen of England Margaret of France, Queen of England
This may sound weird, but I find it hard to listen to women narrators. Alot of the appeal of podcasts and these kinds of videos is the person's voice. Like I said , I know it's odd, but a lot of us women's voices are annoying. Lol. But yours perfectly suits the content. 😁🦄
This video might change my opinion, but from the little I know of her I don’t rly like her🥲 I tend not to like mistresses (with exceptions, of course, when they treat the wife with kindness and respect- which might be Diane’s case, though that’s not the idea that I have of her- though again, it might well change w the video :)
No, I totally get where you're coming from. 😂I think she definitely did treat Catherine with respect, but understandably Catherine didn't like her, even if there was respect. It wasn't just about Diane taking 'her man', but the fact Diane took her political place as well, and basically hampered Catherine's efforts to fully be queen until after Henry's death.
@@HistorysForgottenPeople yes, I prefer a mistress who knows her place *below* the wife and doesn’t act like a Queen😭 but I like the more nuanced view you gave of Diane here🙏🙏

I absolutely agree. We can talk about "oh, times were different back then",but that's doing so EXTREMELY HEAVY lifting....

Thank you for this video. I once saw the Film with Lana Turner and I never knew why she only was wearing black and white. Thank you for this insight

Thank you, good to be back! 😂I've been catching up after the Christmas break, but should be all back to normal now, haha.
