You're welcome, and also thank you! 😊 I know she's absolutely not forgotten, but I think (as with most of the very famous Queens in history) the person she really was, and how she got there has certainly been overlooked. Marie de' Medici is also coming soon! 😉
I wondered when Catherine de Medici would be featured, and had a feeling it would be soon. This queen really took my interest when I was young and read Jean Plaidys trilogy. I didnt know if I should feel bad for her or scared of her. So much about her using poison, occult practices including Satanism, even the callous way she treated her own children. Depending on the author you were reading at the time. A favorite movie, Queen Margot, really showed just how brutal she really was, though I was surprised she really did so little to Diane after the years of hurt and degredation that lady put her thru! Thank you for this wonderful history!
Not Diane de Poitiers it was her husband who degraded and humiliated her place the blame where it's due Diane would never have had any power if Henry had no enabled her
Oh, it never fails to amaze me how many rulers had messed up childhoods. Honestly, a huge amount of history is explained by how the monarchs were treated in their younger years.
Excellent as always, thank you! One thing I am surprised was not addressed was the use of the so called "Escadron volant" the Flying Squadron, which was made of up ambitious ladies who wanted favors, which were granted, but were used as spies by Catherine.
@@leigharmstrong9940 I don't know if it is anti-Catherine propaganda, or if it was true. Supposedly, Catherine would make use of these ladies' charms, and they would seduce men Catherine wanted information from, or to create blackmail material. She’s fascinating and def dividing- I think the idea that she plotted for the Bartholomew’s day massacre from the beginning doesn’t make much difference sense- her conciliatory policies in the beginning (and even after, sometimes) make it unlikely imo that she’d take this huge 180 into that horrible massacre. I also give her props for going for a conciliatory policy at first; many didn’t. The fact she only changed after her son’s life was threatened says smth about her character that I think usually gets overlooked in popular conscience. I can never make a proper judgement on her lol but love learning about her- and this video was rly good- a good number of videos on her out there clearly took their information from the same website without changing it much, and you didn’t 🙏🙏 (though tbf I didn’t think you would :) Have a nice week!
It's definitely what took me a little longer with this video - there is a lot of information about Catherine, but much of it seems to go down one route only! It's especially strange, since even one of the best sources for her is Leonie Frieda's book, and that was used as a basis for the recent Serpent Queen series, sooo.....? 😂 I totally agree that I view her very much as someone working within the framework of what she was able to as well. As you say, she didn't change her mind until they threatened Charles, and honestly, I think I would have reacted the same as well. It was a stupid decision on their part to not understand that the woman helping them might change her mind when they tried to kidnap her son!

what a fascinating exploration of Catherine de' Medici! i really appreciate the depth of detail you've provided. however, i have to say, it's interesting how often she's portrayed as a villain in history. i mean, while she definitely made some controversial choices, isn’t it possible that her decisions were more about survival in a tumultuous time than pure ambition?
@@lilacgirl-z8w Even with that being said she was still a predator who groomed Henry. It’s believed based on correspondence the two started engaging in a sexual relationship when Diane was 35 & Henry was 15. What makes it even more disturbing is their relationship started out as mentor & student. I find it sad that looking back in time & even now people express sympathy for the young girls who were forced into relationships with grown men. However, when it’s the other way around & the victim is a male the abuse gets overlooked like oh he’s a boy doing what boys do. It’s such a sick & messed up double standard.
It's weird that a war was actually named "the War of Religion", when MOST wars have always and still are about religion, the war starters and, sadly, the history books just don't like to admit it.

Oooooh...... Oh my goodness. Why do you always make me pick just one? 😂😅 Honestly, it might be Augustus - and that is a really weird answer for me, because in modern life I would definitely lean more towards the popularis and away from the traditional! But I think when you consider the upheaval and wars of the previous decades before he took power, the problems with rationing, the political fighting, Augustus knew exactly how to stabilise Rome and pull it back into a cohesive unit. He had a lot of traditional rules I don't agree with, but it was with an attempt to create peace again, something he achieved. And recreating it as a republic allowed him to bring in constitutional and financial reform that would otherwise have been bickered over by rivals in the Senate. Sometimes you need a constitutional government, sometimes you need someone in charge to decide what's happening. 😂
I think she definitely didn't start out that way, though, her policies (for the time she lived in) were quite accommodating compared to others in Europe. It might have continued, had there not been a threat to Charles' life!
It's definitely a subject that needs more exploring, I agree! I'm doing a video on Mary, Queen of Scots (due on the 3rd November) and I'm going to go over it more in that one. 😉
