Solo Backpacking SIERRA Wilderness | Cooking & Caves!

  • Hi Campers!
This week I solo hike/ backpack into the mysterious Sierra Nevada mountains of northern California. I find my mountain top camp spot and set up my REI 1 Quarter Dome 1 man tent and get my camp gear ready for the night. I then set up my cooking gear and make a delicious dinner of Back Country Burritos with an ice cold beer! The next morning it's up to the lava caves for breakfast and coffee along the cliff's while I tour more caves and lava formations.
    Thanks for watching!

Dear Chris, greetings from Melbourne Australia. Just wanted to pass on a huge thanks for these highly engrossing videos which l am thoroughly enjoying. We have such different fauna and flora in Oz - no large mammalian predators - so it’s a real treat to see glimpses of North America’s spectacular wilderness. You certainly know how to invoke our primal fears of the dark unknown with the close encounter campfire stories. I’m always thankful l watch them with my hefty Malamute by my side. I look forward to many more virtual adventures. Keep hale and hearty.

I did hike last night after not going for awhile, and I'm getting ready to go again tonight. Great videos Chris, this is really up my alley, and I really like the ones where you tell a scary story too. With love, and respect. Wes Sept

Thanks for videoing your Sierra adventure. MH Breakfast Skillet is their tastiest breakfast! I fry it in the skillet after it's rehydrated. Good advice from the big hairy man! Caves can be a great place to get out of the elements, especially during a thunderstorm. I don't think bears would like those caves as they are too big and too open for the likes of any bear.

I live up in the foothills of Rio Rico Arizona on the Mexican border, my wife and I spend a lot of time outdoors here, even if it's in the yard, lol , big ranch style house on a good hunk of land , must have a good zipper because of the night life in the desert, everything bite's here lol , plus black Bear, mountain lion's, wild pigs, ok Chris be safe buddy and I will be talking to you again....

I was looking at the REI Co-op Flexlite Air Chair but decided to get the Helinox Chair Zero with Groundsheet. The groundsheet seemed like a nice accessory. I didn’t see one available for the REI chair. With that ground sheet you can take the chair anywhere. I actually bought two of the chairs for some foot support full relaxation. My Beagle loves it too.
A smart bear is going to find that coin.

Thanks to one of your videos I discovered that small stabilizer for canister stoves. That is essential and thanks. Also I already knew this but if you can manage to carry a very lightweight folding camp chair that is very important. Those didn’t exist back int the late 80s and 90s and on long bicycle trips you get frequent backaches from not having any back support when you sit. I’m getting one of those small Zillow pads because that has so many uses. Really appreciate you showing your gear and your stories are great. Be safe and keep hiking 🥾. 👍☮️🌞🏔️🏕️🩵

It's funny you mention your rain fly split and needing to be replaced. I had a Ice climbing tool that I liked but the head broke loose from the shaft at about 70 feet and I found that they relied on epoxy to hold it together. I mailed it back to "Trango" and didn't ask for anything except that they correct their attachment issue....... They sent me a replacement tool with out me asking. I dont think I ever used it as I'll only trust my life to a tool 1 tx.

I don't but I 've heard it's a problem for some. Found this on the web....I hit Osprey up on twitter and asked for any quick fix, assuming the warranty wouldn't cover it when they gave me a number to call and said the issue would be covered- no problem. They said that it comes from the "frame rubbing on the pack material" and that their team would "coat the frame with spray paint to prevent the squeaking"

Hey Chris, I’ve been watching your videos for a few years now. I live in Reno n I would like to go visit these caves if you could message me the location.

New video nice..Question how do you typically know how to navigate back to your car? Also have you ever had any crazy things you've encountered by solo camping? It would be great if you did a video on tips...to enjoy solo camping I'm in fresno right now and going to take advantage of it soon.

I generally research the area well with maps/ online google earth and roads and even do a short day hike to figure things out. Also use Gaia GPS and don't go long distances but up a ridge or a meadow and camp a mile or 2 from the car. But maps are your best friend!!
