  • Roosterman/Rooster4Life Presents my first video since being suspended, I thought it would be fitting for it to be for Smokin Joe Frazier, As we celebrate the new year of 2012 lets look back at one of the saddest moments of 2011, and Celebrate the Life of an amazing man, father, hero and Champion, Boxing Fans this is my Final goodbye to Smokin joe Frazier.
Frazier was diagnosed with liver cancer in late September 2011. Within a few weeks, the cancer had metastasized. By November 2011, he was under hospice care, where he died on November 7. Upon hearing of Frazier's death, Muhammad Ali said, "The world has lost a great champion. I will always remember Joe with respect and admiration".Frazier's private funeral took place on 14 November at the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church in Philadelphia, and in addition to friends and family was attended by Muhammad Ali, Don King, Larry Holmes, Magic Johnson, Dennis Rodman, among others. He was later buried at the Ivy Hill Cemetery, a short drive from the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Joseph William "Joe" Frazier (January 12, 1944 -- November 7, 2011), also known as Smokin' Joe, was an Olympic and Undisputed World Heavyweight boxing champion, whose professional career lasted from 1965 to 1976, with a one-fight comeback in 1981.
Frazier emerged as the top contender in the late 1960s, defeating opponents that included Jerry Quarry, Oscar Bonavena, Buster Mathis, Eddie Machen, Doug Jones, George Chuvalo, and Jimmy Ellis en route to becoming undisputed heavyweight champion in 1970, and followed up by defeating Muhammad Ali on points in the highly-anticipated "Fight of the Century" in 1971. Two years later Frazier lost his title when he was knocked out by George Foreman. He fought on, beating Joe Bugner, losing a rematch to Ali, and beating Quarry and Ellis again.
Frazier's last world title challenge came in 1975, but he was beaten by Ali in their brutal rubbermatch. He retired in 1976 following a second loss to Foreman. He made a comeback in 1981, fighting just once, before retiring for good. The International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO) rates Frazier among the ten greatest heavyweights of all time. He is an inductee of both the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame.
Frazier's style was often compared to that of Henry Armstrong and occasionally Rocky Marciano. He was dependent on bobbing, weaving, grunting, snorting as he grimaced with all out aggression wearing down his opponents with relentless pressure. His best known punch was a powerful left hook, which accounted for most of his knockouts.
After retiring, Frazier made cameo appearances in several Hollywood movies, and two episodes of The Simpsons. His son Marvis became a boxer - trained by Frazier himself - although was unable to emulate his father's success. Frazier continued to train fighters in his gym in Philadelphia. His later years saw the continuation of his bitter rivalry with Ali, in which the two periodically exchanged insults, interspersed with brief reconciliations.
Frazier was diagnosed with liver cancer in late September 2011 and admitted to hospice care. He died November 7, 2011.

The worst part of this is how Philadelphia treated this man. A statue for Rocky, but none for Joe while he was still alive. There is a statue now, but the man is gone...
In 2006, people were raving about the new Rocky film generating millions. Philadelphia swarmed around Rocky once more. In the same time, Joe was struggling to keep his small gym up and running in one of the poorest neighbourhoods for the poor youths around him. He failed, and the gym closed down. Philadelphia didn't bat an eye. Only after he is dead, did they say yes to a statue but Balboa is still more recognizable than Frazier in Philly. A city that supposedly loves its athletes and prides itself on brotherly love. But there was no love for old Joe Frazier. Shame on Philadelphia,

wakaka2waka Why the hate for Rocky? Rocky had a greater impact on American culture than Joe Frazier did, of course it's going to be more recognizable to the masses. Most people wouldn't know Joe from another guy on the street. Doesn't mean they wouldn't like Joe if they knew his story, they just don't know boxing.
... you're just being dramatic when you conflate the impact of a movie with a boxing gym closing down. You should bemoan the priorities of the poor youth along with their parents. He obviously didn't do it solely for charity.

Very well said! Rocky Balboa was a made up fictional character! Frazier was the authentic true Heavyweight Champion of the world! This also bothered me quite a bit, and I fault the City of Philadelphia for this injustice against a man who brought the championship belt to their city. They also did not acknowledge that Frazier was a man of integrity and one who had a generous heart! Everyone forgets that when Ali was in exile from professional boxing, Frazier helped Ali sustain a life style by giving him money. Ali, displayed dishonor to the man who helped him, by constantly insulting and ridiculing Frazier. Frazier was definitely the better man of the two!

I knew Joe briefly and met with him several times back in the early and mid 90s ...we both had the same lawyer and would go to his parties . Even though he was larger than life there was still something humble about him . And he could make a person feel as important as any of the biggest celebrities out there . He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh . I remember telling him about my grandfather who had been a boxer also from South Philly but his heyday was very early on... maybe like 1912 and through the early Depression era .
I told him a little bit about my grandfather and mentioned he was black Irish . Joe threw his head back and said your grandfather was a black Irishman ? ( I have really pale skin and blackish hair ) and I said no have you ever heard of the Black Irish ? I said they're people from Ireland who have the Spanish blood in them , they usually have black hair and crazy tempers . He loved it and was laughing . He had a real cute little four-year-old boy with him at the party and I asked him about the child's mother , what is she like and he said " beautiful , Wild ,and CRAYZZAYY !" ... big emphasis on the word crazy... and he was laughing .
I could kick myself in the ass because several times I had the opportunity to hang out with everybody when they all went out to dinner with Joe and he would usually end up singing.... I never got to do that and I really do regret it so much .
I used to stop by the gym sometimes coming back from Temple U. ... Marvis and his sister were always there . I usually was only there for a moment or two , not very long . But there was always a really friendly welcoming spirit in the place . One time on a different occasion when we were conducting business right before I left Marvis asked me if I would like to pray... and so we prayed . It was a really genuine moment .
I had Joe's phone number but I only called it once and that was about business .
I never should have lost touch with them and I have always regretted it . I felt so sad when I heard he died . he was such a cool person and grateful for everything .
Same thing with Marvis... they both were warm and genuine , and loved people .

Joe signed a piece of paper that I had, and I remember it said Boogie, boogie, boogie. He was very nice and approachable. However,at the time, I never saw a man so stocky in stature(He didn't look that wide on T.V.). Joe is easily one of the top 10 HWs of all time. P Mac C . He sure was . A lot of people forget that he was the only boxer alive ever to beat Ali when Ali was still in his prime . That says a lot as no doubt in most people’s eyes Ali was the greatest of all time , and yet Joe beat him in his heyday . What’s more , as even I think George Foreman said , Joe had the power to knock out Foreman and beat him in that seemingly one sided fight . It’s just that Joes fighting style meant that Foreman could get most of his telling blows in before Joe could . It could have gone the other way if Frazier somehow could have adapted better . Even George said that lesser fighters than Joe with less of a punch had knocked him down . Plus Joe Frazier was a really nice good man . I remember watching him as a young child and never feeling threatened by his presence as you might with some other heavyweight boxers , the reason being I think that as a child you can instinctively know sometimes when somebody is good and will never harm you . Joe Frazier was such a man .
Mind you I wouldn’t want to get into a boxing ring with him . Rest in Peace Joe , I am sure you are in Paradise now .

Now move to the current day. Stallone, in the most back handed way, is kinda taking from Joe again. Rocky is losing everybody. They're all dying or just getting on with their lives.

I think Foreman is more overrated then Frazier people say fighter like: Holmes, Norton, Spinks and even Smokin Joe Frazier himself are better then him all because they got the better of Ali. I truly believe Foreman would of beat Ali once if he got a best of three like almost all of the others did he would win one I still have Ali winning 2 out of three but if he did win at least one he would have that and the fact that he beat all of those they say are better then him except Spinks I don't think he fought.

:( made me teary eyed. Joe Frazier, easily my favorite boxer of all time and a truly great man. It hurts when i hear Ali call him names and what not, being that Frazier was the one who made sure Ali got back his boxing license and was just a supportive friend when Ali was down during his exile for 4 years. I know Ali has since said that he never meant those things and that they were said to promote the fight but he should have apologized to Joe face to face and not thru newspapers or by telling Frazier's son Marvis to tell his daddy that he said he was sorry. As great of a man and champ as Ali was, he always gets that black mark next to his name in my book for torturing Joe Frazier the way he did. He's lucky Joe didn't kill him in the ring, God knows that he probably tried to.

But deep down NO ONE who faced Joe Frazier in the ring had anything less than monumental respect for him. He was a hard worker, a fierce fighter, a Brave man who never complained.
