I was a friend of Muhammad and got to meet Joe on a couple occasions...we never talked about his 3 fights with Joe...Both fighters were gracious individuals. I was young & really didn't like the tension between them...
I loved both these Champs...I attended both funerals and have fond memories of both...

RIP Ali and Frazier. Their heated rivalry is what always made me love their three fights (specifically I and III). But I never knew they actually forgave each other just before they passed, hearing from their own children. So nice to hear that, after all the trouble those two great champions went through.

@@klassickingz9094 Of course it was his dad who changed his style. Marvis was very different from joe, and was best when he fought as a defensive fighter keeping his distance and winning on points. People don't realize that he had an incredibly successful amateur career winning 54 out of 56 flights. One loss was due to a neck injury, the same pinched nerve that eventually caused him to retire when he was a professional. The other was lost to a guy named James broad who marvelous then went on to defeat when she was a professional.
He beat a lot of other tough guys on the way up including Tim Witherspoon, James Bone Crusher Smith, James Quick Tillis and more.
His dad only ever lost to two men as a professional. George Foreman and Muhammad Ali two of the greatest ever. Marvis Frazier only lost to two men as a professional. Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson, two of the greatest ever.
Muhammad Ali said it best. Marvis Frazier might be Joe's son, but his style is best to fighting like me. His dad took over once he became a professional and changed his style to an infighter, the way Joe used to fight. That was all wrong for Marvis and was a huge mistake. He also rushed Marvis into a championship fight after only 10 professional bouts. That was also a big mistake.
It's hard being the son of a legend. If Marvis Frazier had been Marvis Jones, he'd get a lot more respect for having a pretty decent boxing career. He might not have won the heavyweight championship, but he was a top contender and played that into two big money fights.
A lot of boxers would love to have the career that Marvis Frazier had, despite the two first round knockouts to Holmes and Tyson.
It's great to know that both Ali and Frazier finally came to terms and were friends towards the end. I don't blame Frazier for taking the things that Ali have said personally and being hurt by it, especially since it had affected his children. It takes an equally great man to be able to forgive another for his/her mistakes.

I must have watched the trilogy between Smokin Joe and Ali numerous times. That 3rd fight both men were never the same. I really wish both would have retired. Rest in peace Champs!!!

What many did not understand was that Ali was very well aware that the fans were looking for friction, they wanted a pre-fight brawl. Ali got the crowd going, it was nothing personal, strictly business. As Ali himself said it "The Garden is Sold out! That's Why!"

Ali was The Greatest, but Joe Frazier was a special kind of man. Ali treated Joe very badly; unnecessarily to be honest. When Ali wasn't allowed to fight- Joe lent Ali several hundred dollars one time. I have also noticed that- on several occasions when Ali was honored, Joe always showed up. He traveled all the way to London to be with Ali on a segment of This is Your Life. In the ring- they brought out the best in each other. Two magnificent champions. But Ali should have treated Joe with more respect- outside of the ring. He deserved it- and it was the one flaw in Ali's character that was a disappointment. God Bless them both.
Joe has always called Ali, Clay his 'slave name' as Ali put it himself. And Joe did insist in calling Ali Clay, that's when Ali started loosing respect for him but has always loved him. And Joe did loved Ali too.
Why call him “Greatest” ? “boy”, “ugly”, “monkey” were some of the words Ali constantly used to describe Joe. He used hit and run tactics and cheated using ropes to avoid getting hit, he had average boxing skills, was easy to hit when not on the run as exposed by a more skill full boxer Henry Cooper.
@@daveoliver5838 Frazier beat Ali decisively in their first fight. Ali beat Joe decisively in their second and third fights. He had Joe in trouble in the second round of the second fight- the referee, Tony Perez, got in the way. He TKO'd Joe in the Thrilla in Manila. Not sure what fights you saw. You .might think of Ali as having "average boxing skills "- but you're in a distinct minority. A very distinct minority.

I believe Ali couldn’t take Joes punches in the first and was on banned PEDs and pain killers for the second match, he should have been drug tested immediately before and immediately after the fight. I’ve yet to watch the third one, I’ll comment later.
Basically Ali was a hit and run merchant with little defensive boxing skills, hoping to tire the opponent in chasing, not really what you expect from a proper boxer. As is obvious here, he came off worse during the exchanges when he stood and fought, hence the non-stop running away from Joe throughout.
@@daveoliver5838 You're the first person I ever heard that mentioned Ali taking pain killers for a fight. Any fight. Pain killers make you drowsy. Those fights with Frazier went the distance- except the last one. You may also be the only boxing fan in The Universe who hasn't seen the last fight with Frazier. The best one. If you haven't seen the video on Ali's Defensive skills- then you need to. No heavyweight ever slipped punches like Ali. The U.S. government took away 3 years of his prime- and Ali still came back and beat a whole new generation of fighters. Guys like Quarry, Bonavena, Foreman, Lyle and Shavers. Speaking of Henry Cooper- he always gave Ali the highest praise. He never squawked about losing, or about being cut. He was a stand up guy. Still find it strange that you have never seen the last Frazier. You're in a very distinct minority there, too.
Muhammad Ali just had so much personality and charisma, his character is beyond anything that could be found nowadays

He was. However, his personal attacks against Joe Frazier had an incredibly damaging impact on Joe's name and reputation, and his standing with black people.
He may have gotten the money, but he never felt that he got the proper respect he deserved from his own people. He felt that Muhammad Ali told lies to make the black people think he was an Uncle Tom sell out to his race.
You just can't fix doing something like that to a friend, and fellow black man who helped you out in your time of need, by saying I'm sorry years later.
That's why Joe Frazier had such a hard time forgiving Muhammad Ali, no matter how many times he tried.

@@fuseydunae397 WRONG!! Joe Frazier was a loyal friend to Muhammad Ali when Ali first lost his boxing license. He gave him money and did all he could to help him get his license back.
Once he got his license back, Muhammad Ali betrayed his friend Joe Frazier. As a result, Frazier started calling Muhammad Ali "Clay" to retaliate against Muhammad Ali for all the things that Ali was saying about Joe.
Frazier felt that Muhammad Ali didn't deserve the respect of being called Muhammad Ali because he was a two-faced, lying phony. That was why he continued to call him "Clay" in the lead up to their first fight, and for years afterwards. Joe was super pissed off about being betrayed as a friend, and for all the insults that Muhammad Ali called him.
Joe continued to be pissed off about it for the rest of his life. Muhammad Ali did eventually apologize and say he was wrong for doing what he did to Joe. Near the end of his life, Joe also apologized for making fun of Muhammad Ali and his Parkinson's disease.
In a filmed interview, Joe teared up and said that he wished Muhammad Ali could enjoy his old age the way the rest of us do, because he's earned it. Joe also made a point of addressing him as Muhammad Ali, not Cassius Clay.

Two legends who needed each other to cement their legacy in the ring. What those two mean inflicted on each other over their great trilogy...how could they not have the respect of the warrior for each other?
I truly think they probably took a few years off of their lives with those magnificent battles. They just don't make them like that anymore. Great era ever! No other era is close. Much love and respect for both of those men!

From what I could see and gather Frazier was really jealous of Ali's great ability in the ring..I heard Frazier with my own ears put Ali down because Ali could throw landing punches while stepping/dancing backwards..Frazier had ONE DEMENTION to his boxing style, while Ali had many, such as boxing on his toes, circling to his left, unbelievable combinations, lightening fast punches, great stamina, ability to think on his feet..Ali was in a league of his own, and Frazier was a one dementional fighter..Frazier was insane in the ring, because he would do the same thing over

I watched his fight against James Broad, who was an up and comer at the time, on national T.V. It was a tough battle with both guys showing tremendous heart. Marvis showed me something that day. The kid had skill and courage. He wasn’t a top tier heavyweight and he obviously garnered more attention because of the name. Unfortunately, his legacy appears to be the Tyson debacle.

The three best fighters of all time. Ali, Frazier and Foreman. May God bless Ali and Frazier for all they have done for boxing. Joe Frazier beside being a great boxer was also good and kind human being. I miss them both.

You gotta respect Smokin Joe. I don’t think he would’ve fought like he did in the first fight if Ali didn’t get to him like he did. Frazier went in that ring not only to defend his title, but to finally let out all the anger he had for Ali. It wasn’t personal to Ali, but it was for Frazier
I don’t buy that ali saw Frazier as a representation of what’s wrong with how the world treats black people, if that were true Frazier wouldn’t have helped him out when the nation turned on him. After all it’s wasn’t Frazier using white supremacist talking points to describe Ali it was the other way around...
Frazier gave Ali money when he was in exile and Frazier went to congress and the 2 boxing commissions to help him get his boxing license back

I see a lot of comments stating Ali was just trying to sell this fight. This fight did NOT need selling. Ali did Joe wrong, by doing that, but come on these guys loved each other in the end.
I agree Ed it took something away from his great aura when he did that. I think even Ali probably knew that if he could do it all over again he would not have acted like a child with all the nasty name calling.

Howard Cosell had assured Joe's manager that he would sit in between Ali and Joe during the interview. And in the studio he changed that order and kept his commentary running when an actual fight broke out. Joe's manager called him an unprincipled man before leaving the studio.

While Ali was wrong to insult Frazier, Frazier insisted on continuing to call Ali “Clay” long after everyone else called him Ali. Frazier was not simply a victim.
Y'oure right, Frazier is not simply a victim, i totally agree. But who went really the most far between the 2 ? frazier or ali ? Wich one called a black brother an oncle tom, (and was dead serious when he said it ) on the parkinson show in 74 an so many other times ? No of course, Frazier isn't a simple victim, he said many things he shouldn't say about Ali's sickness mainly, but everybody can understand the biterness of an old who finished alone, forgotten and broken while the other is now seen ( thanks ALSO to the brainwashing medias ) as a semi god or an angel which was once on earth while he just was human.
Paperback I don’t disagree with much of what you’ve written here. However, “the brainwashing media” label is extremely tired. While he wasn’t an angel or god, Ali was genuinely heroic .

Ali was an outcast, Joe helped Ali, loaned him money, testified for him in Congress etc. to get him back in the ring What Ali did really messed with his family, thats to far. If joe said somethings it was at Ali, period not his family. Ali calling Frazier a gorilla, ugly and his children used to get into fights in school because kids are cruel and called them son and or daughter of the gorilla and so forth. When i found this out, I could see why he said what ( i thought was terrible)he said about Ali's Parkinsons. Heck did you ever read the time George stopped Joe for going to go after Ali, while having parkinsons, at some function? Joe had a lot to drink and started having flashbacks of all that stuff. George got in front of Joe to keep him away from Ali. George said Joe was really mad, he wasn't kidding around.

50 years ago ....The Superfight, the greatest heavyweight fight of all time happened....Muhammad was the GOAT....but that night, Joe was the better man, and that left hook?! OMFG
I don't follow boxing anymore. Does this kind of respect exist now days with two formidable opponents. They smash each other in the ring, yet truly respected each other and became the best of friends, and I mean real friendship, not one for the cameras.
Sometimes what is said...goes beyond selling or hyping the fight...it becomes personal if you touch on a unfavorable subject the opponent may have experienced...Joe Frazier...from the get go...refused to acknowledge the man's name "MUHAMMAD ALI" he even refused to mention his name at ringside in Zaire (remember?) He kept referring to Ali as "my man" some of yall didnt even notice that cause...some of yall was probably hating too...but its cool...some of those things Ali said went beyond promoting the fight and...not only did Joe Frazier not like it...more of the public than we knew...didnt like it neither! I loved Ali and I was blinded by my admiration for him but...as time went on...i had to seriously take a look at that situation and as a adult...put it in proper perspective. Ali still remained my man though...and he's still the GREATEST! Joe Frazier climbed his own mountain and...when MUHAMMAD Ali was in his way...that "near" knockout in the 11th and...that knockdown in the 15th back in 1971 taught Ali a little lesson about all that talk...And history will never let us forget that! Joe Frazier was a mean mutha who held his own!

Joe Frazier 'Smoking Gun!', A legend in his own right regardless of what Muhammad Ali said. Last night I saw a 'this is your life' documentary, and Muhammad was ever so pleased to see Joe. He was most touched by his presence. I am so happy they ended up being great friend when all was dusted and done. Joe's and his wife education can be seen shining in this interview. Well done Marvin, you do indeed represent your 'Pap'.
I called the gym years ago and Marvis answered the phone "hello this is Marvis". He told me about membership and lessons and you could tell that he was a nice guy. A secretary next door told me Marvis would call to see how her mother was doing because she told him about her mother being sick. I'm a lawyer and have been in front of his daughter Jackie, who's a Philly Judge and treats lawyers and everyone in her court with respect & a class act. Just a genuine family. I'm disgusted that the City did nothing to keep that gym open. It's was a historic site and now it's a furniture store..
Everyone forgets Joe tomming against Ali calling him Clay on talk shows and in the press laughing while Alis title got taken and then after Ali lost in 71 after nearly killing Frazier in the ring and putting him in the hospital in intensive care from the hematoma on his head Joe didn't really wanna fight him again so joe avoided Ali for a few years by not giving him a rematch. Ali who lived and breathed to be the Champion was infuriated by this fighting every heavyweight that drew breath hoping to get that rematch that Joe wasnt so eager to give him. Hence some bad blood namecalling etc. But Joe was just as guilty in the beginning as Ali was after. Ali didnt have to give Frazier the shot in Manila. He did it not only to win a second time but he loved the fierce competition and respected Fraziers heart and toughness. Most of his gorilla manila talk was in jest of course to sell tickets but he also knew he was upsetting joe n did it anyway. So Ali got more than even and maybe took it too far but all these years later noone cares too much about the quarrels they resolved on several occasions. They love both fighters to the moon and back. They were BOTH great men that did the world proud. Champions FOREVER

Of all those fighters kids of that era, Marvis the most intelligent and dignified spokesperson. Ali’s daughter was referring to the opposition to black advancement/Vietnam war by black folks which (according to her) transposed onto Joe as sort of a “Tom” (which she correctly states was undeserving towards Joe). Marvis’s a good man like his father stated in his bio.
This was the only part of Ali that i really hated . He could be so ficious and racist towards his own "brother" . God bless joe frazier and God bless the GOAT

Him and me had three fights," Joe says. "He won two of them, I won one. But if you look at him now, you can see who won them all." That statement shows that there was still bitterness, Now, i have no idea why you're bringing George Foreman into this, he had nothing to do with the both of them. He became a preacher in 1980 and there was no animosity involved here with him. I've followed them both since the 1980s, tell m where Ali helped Joe. I would like to read it. Muhummad Ali was the Greatest Heavyweight of All time but he was CRUEL to Joe Frazier and his family, period. Ali was extremely cruel to Frazier, considering Frazier was there for Ali at Ali's lowest. The contempt Ali had for Frazier makes no sense to me.
I understand that perhaps prior to their first meeting in the ring, Ali must've looked at Frazier and an unworthy champion because Frazier didn't go through him to claim it. I somewhat understand that resentment.
But even building up to Thrilla in Manilla when Ali had claimed back his title, he still displayed deep contempt for Joe. He called him a gorilla and all other kinds of insults. I didn't understand that.
Ali had a name for all his major oppenents. He called Sonny a big ugly bear, called George Foreman the mummy, called Floyd Patterson the rabbit etc...so I guess that's just what he did. but with Joe it was borderline hate.
Please watch This is your life Muhammad Ali on youtube when Frazier comes out and you will see that there is no contempt he was simply selling a fight but I agree very stupidly .
I love Muhammad Ali and I know he was trying to promote the fight.. but he hurt Joe's feelings and Joe Frazier was the type of person he just wanted to be cool with everybody he wasn't a trash talker... I love both of them🥊.. but I wish Ali didn't do that it was too much🤦🏾♂️

For every mean thing that Ali said and did, he got his just reward by his own sparring partner Holmes and god himself. To be in frame of mind tht you are invincible and then being thrashed like garbage must have sobered Ali in his later years
I absolutely love Muhammad Ali but Joe Frazier acted like a man before and after the fights far better than Ali, who always seemed to be in fight selling mode he went to cruel places regarding Joe's looks which were simply ridiculous he probably meant no harm but for me it took a little of his beautiful warm aura and light away when he did that.
Joe Frazier by the way was a boxing great no doubt about that.
