great video, this was a really comfy adventure to go down with you. i find myself with a lot of old school hardware myself and it feels good knowing these machines wont meet the scrap heap and will instead be safe and sound in a collection/use case.
To be fair, most parents arent installing 20 year old FPS games, if you're installing more mainstream software then you'll have a much easier time with Linux Mint.
@schvabek yeah I tried linux for years and definitely not for me, I prefer software working right out of the box rather than to tweak it beforehand for it to work
great video! i had one of those, which i upgraded to a core 2 duo t7400, 4gb of ram (out of which 3gb are usable), and a wd green 240gb ssd. regarding linux, the reason why drivers just work is due to how the linux kernel is structured. essentially since most drivers are FOSS, they can be bundled with the install image, so there's rarely a need to go hunting for them manually.
Of course I’m going next-door to go film the video. I’ve been planning to film for the last two years and I see this video. 🤣 mines gonna be way different though so🤷🏻♂️ G4 versus Intel coming soon
Haven’t finished the video yet, but a great way to open these is with a putty knife that you use to spread filler on walls. You will find that they’re wide enough and thin enough to slide in between the plastic chassis and the metal enclosure and won’t leave any marks and will unclip multiple clips at the same time :)
Hey, thanks! Yeah, people in my chat were talking about the putty knife. I’ll try it next time I have one of these apart. Still super annoying to open though. Three screws would do the job just as well.
This is the sort of stuff that I love to do. Find old hardware, (try) to upgrade it, and set it up exactly how I like it knowing darn well that I will never actually use it.
You made opening that as difficult as possible, my man. Get a 2” putty knife. Start on the left or right side and go from back to front. Then do the other side. It’ll peel right out.
@ I got myself a early 2008 17 inch MacBook Pro with it’s maximum configuration without knowing and all of that for 50 euros and it’s in pretty good shape and I just had to buy a replacement battery (60 euros) and everything else is stock and works flawlessly, for 110 euros one of my favourite purchases recently lol, sorry for the long comment 😅
Love seeing more people try Linux, been daily driving it for years, would fully switch to it but CoD dosent work on Linux at all. good job giving it a fair shot tho!
I have a 2005 Mac Mini with a PowerPC G4 in it that my friend gave me. I use it to play Minecraft for PowerPC lol. It's got its box and papers as well, so I like to decorate with it sometimes.
I’ve talked about that to a few people already, but essentially if I have to ship these out to you, depending on where you live, you’d pay more in shipping/customs fees than the thing is worth. They’re not that expensive.
I think taking the time to learn a bit about linux can be super helpful, yeah it takes time but, as you see on this old hardware, it can totally revive it. I have been toying with it for a while, mostly as a curiosity like many of us here with computers we "don't need", and it is a great asset in the tool belt I think. The server stuff you can do with it as well, TrueNAS has been one of my favorite additions to the homelab, have the files I used to usb to each device now just on a network share. Would love to see more videos with you trying linux too, the journey is a neat thing to to experience, and as you get to understand the basics, you can get a better picture of what it can do for you. SteamOS is also super awesome now, super happy Valve is putting work in to make things easier with stuff a lot of us rely on Windows to even do. Keep it up!
i bought a 2007 mac mini with 4gigs and added a m.2 with an adapter, installed linux mint, it ran perfect for years but now i switched it to macOS Monterey and even with only 4gigs it streams video perfect, i use it as my daily, and i rarely even turn on my good systems! i use my 08 iMac as a tv everyday using mint although it can run Monterey i just like mint better. people throw these away for no reason. apple scares them into upgrading, god bless opencore! lol
I don't have an old Mac Mini like this, but I do currently use a mid-2010 MacBook as my main laptop, and I quad-boot Windows 7, Linux Mint, OS X 10.8, and macOS 10.13 on it. I generally use Windows 7 and OS X 10.8 the most, since Linux Mint doesn't run great on NVIDIA graphics and macOS 10.13 is a bit slow and drains the battery quickly.
nice on my main setup i use macOS, NixOS (linux system) and Windows lol ... its cool to see you trying out linux. Yeah macOS is BSD based sysetm so I can see it preforming quite close to Linux, but yeah windows 10 isn't great for those older machines i say windows 7 would be better personally, but yeah nice video.
the best macOS is snow leopard but macOS yosemite was pretty good but macOS big sur is a bit too tactile the icons are big like a phone and the icons lack detail to differentiate them the next macOS I wish the docks had spherical icons like the vision OS would be much better too
Ive run win10 on a core2duo and its only acceptable with 8GB ram, an SSD and overclocking the CPU to 3.8ghz so I can imagine how painful it is running on those mac minis 😅
Don’t use linux mint bro.. despite the looks and feel it’s actually kinda heavy.. try to use xubuntu or better yet debian vanilla with xfce, if you comparing the easy installation process with other linux distro and if you more familiar with ubuntu/debian command line, those two is the most recommended one..
08:35 That's not a 2011, they have a round disc cover that easily opens, most likely you have minis from 2005 through 2009. Try using a metal putty knife to safely open 2005-2009 Mac minis instead of a flat head screw driver which tends to damage the plastic or worse, destroy the tabs.

The 2” putty knife was what we used to open them at the Apple Store. It’s the approved solution for that machine.
Thanks, I’ll try that next time!

Instead of using an old release of mint, use linux mint LMDE as that is modern and supports 32 bit
I just went to their site again, and it states that all versions from 20 onward are only 64-bit available. Perhaps I’m missing something.
Linux Mint Debian Edition,as I remember it's on the end of the page@@schvabek
@ linux mint debian edition (LMDE) is the debian variant of linux mint 22. It supports 32 bit
