it needs to be disabled by the creator so yeah, Colin please disable this option, it's disorienting and its accuracy is all over the place but usually on the worse side!
@@Thales1250 I tried this but of course it changes all of googles interface into english, which I don't want, since I'm german. It's really pathetic how Google does change for changes sake...
The old intro was by far the best intro ever on TH-cam, by orders of magnitude. The new one is not bad but the old one was irreplaceable. Just my silly opinion tho! Excellent video as always from an excellent channel!
Spicy new rebrand, I dig it. I also love hearing from those involved in these projects; that's quite a special opportunity to learn even more about the history of these machines.
I love your restoration work and also the historical interviews and background information gain from a lot of the engineering and other people that worked on the old MacBooks and the old Mac equipment. Keep it up.
Great work yet again! It's amazing to see the pull you have now. Getting legit engineers who worked on the subject of the video adds so much. I swear I could watch hours upon hours of these old guys telling their stories of the old days.
I'm just always interested to learn more about these machines, they were very uncommon in general in Europe where in the 90s most people didn't see much of Apple beyond a few old Macintoshes and the occasional lonely single PowerPC machine in a school library. USA was a very different market for Apple then and I certainly never saw a single Powerbook Apple laptop in the 90s outside of the movies. Mini-CD drive is very interesting, it's funny how that format never truly took off despite being quite viable through the early-mid 90s storage wise. It wasn't such an awful idea but Apple probably lacked the market to make it a success.
I know how everyone is loving the changes, but a part of me misses the old intro since that, I mean at least a version of that has been there for a decade
i just picked this machine up from free geek actually! (the cs) its my first ever retro mac laptop, and so far, absolutely loving it despite the passive matrix display.
This was my first laptop. Nothing but problems. Aside from sending it back to apple 4 or 5 times for repairs including new plastics, it had serious software problems including freezing all the time. Owned it for a year and sold it as soon as I could. Horrible horrible laptop. Pushed me to windows but I went back to Apple after Steve Jobs replaced Gil Amiel. It was never a god laptop but the screen, with the 5300C was nice. Played a lot of Doom on it in 1995-1996.
Cool rebrand! I like the new intro and logo, well done! Loved the video, too. The clips with Steve talking about the history of this machine were incredibly interesting.
Wow Colin! New musical intro and splash screens - classy!!! Great repair story. Unfortunately I owned a cs. Not Apple’s best work. Cheers from AKL, NZL.
That new Intro really Caught me off Guard! I also had to do a double take as well! its really different I like the new Intro it shows a new rebranding for the Channel
My father bought us one of these (a CS like this one) back at the end of '95 and it was my primary computer through high school. It wasn't just the hardware that compromised these; they originally shipped with System 7.5.2 which was incredibly unstable in general, but especially on these. Ours crashed often and had trouble running a variety of simple apps. I remember Apple shipped us the install disks (floppies of course, no CD drive) for 7.5.3 several months later at their expense. Between the lousy NiMH battery life and the fact that I needed an external CD drive, we basically used it as a desktop alternative PC. My father pointed out several times that he could have saved hundreds and just bought a desktop model that would have a screen he could read and a processor that was worth a damn. He wasn't wrong.
I often rely on your videos to fall asleep. For me your brand is **COLD OPEN** "In the mid-90s, Apple was going through a shitstorm...". That much hasn't changed. But the new track definitely fits my "mac repair lullabies" playlist much better!
My first ever "my own" Mac was a PowerBook 5300c in college in the late '90s. My dad had upgraded to a 1400c and gave me his old 5300c. One of only two laptops at my college. (The other one was my *PREVIOUS* laptop, a monochrome-display 286 I had bought used off a coworker immediately before heading off to college.) It worked flawlessly for years, before having the screen hinge fail _right_ before Apple's repair program ended, so I got it repaired as probably one of the last of that program.
Your videos bring me back 30 years in supporting Mac products. I became so adept at teardowns and rebuilds of certain machines (5300's in particular) I could do most mobo swaps in under 30 minutes. The 100, 200 and 500 series were built so much better with although good but not cutting edge technology. Apple looking back though needed to make these mistakes to grow into portable computing leader they are today. BTW still have my T8 and long T8 and phillips screwdrivers in my tool kit.
Nice episode, Colin. I used a 5300cs back in the day as my daily driver until I replaced it with a Pismo in 2000. A few years ago I restored my 5300cs by swapping in a screen from a 5300c like you did. However, the active matrix screen is starting to delaminate and show vinegar syndrome signs, so I likely will swap back to the passive matrix screen. Also, the plastics on the hinges had broken a long time ago even after the original recall and my former attempt to use JB Weld to repair the plastics has caused cracks elsewhere on the body. What a mess! Anyway, I’m on the lookout for another parts 5300 to fix this, plus on the 68kmla site one of our fellow enthusiasts has designed 3D printable replacements for the broken screw holes for the hinges, a similar item with which you are familiar from other models.
This one I think one of your bests. Great to hear about Apple’s internal processes back in the day. I always wondered about that CD drive, now it makes sense. I can die peacefully. Thank you! 🙏
First off, love the new opening! It was a nice surprise! Second... I've always loved the overall design of the Powerbooks of this era in general. Even today they still look cool and futuristic. This was a fascinating look at their inner workings and place in Apple's history. Part of me wishes there was a way to have a laptop case in a similar style to one of these, but with more modern hardware.
17:04 The worst part is that Sony didn't learn about that issue, and a decade later batteries that they made for Dell Precision laptops (the ones that are used for enterprises) also had exploding batteries. The backlash was so huge that some people even stopped buying Sony VAIO laptops due to fear of exploding batteries
Ooh, new intro! And other stuff. Nice updates. I do like the old intro a bit better but this new one isn't bad, and it's not like the old videos will stop existing.
Holy crap I inherited a 5300 when I was a kid and totally forgot until seeing it again! I had no idea what to do with it back then because it was already totally obsolete, now I want it back for word processing!
IMO the CD-Rom was a killer for this. I remember reading about it in MacWorld and being amazed that they’d consider shipping it in such a state. It’s funny that the 1400 was spawned from it, since it’s one of my all time favorite laptops. I hope something can be done for that active matrix display though, low res screens from that era are so charming.
The mid 90s was a period of transition, when, if you were lucky, you could get a laptop to last more than a couple-three years, simply because of software and hardware advances. Yet, I knew people that used these 5300s for several years, while I was using my Pismo 2000 Powerbook. Oh, and liking the new intro w/ music!
Logo looks cool although intro music cought me off guard, I really liked the old one but if you feel it better suits the channel then it's fine by me :D
Me parece un gran logo y lo importante es el contenido no la imagen, quienes te seguimos notaremos cualquier cosa rara o extraño. Los cambios son siempre para mejorar. Saludos desde México.
Mind if I ask, what is done which these after he's done fixing them? It's nice seeing the repair(s) and hearing the history of these products, but if they just end up in some closet. It seems just a waste. Now I figured the ones just profiled are going back to Free Geek, but the rest of his retro Mac/PC are just sitting around?
That was really ingenius on Apple's part to turn off the truck driver's corporate credit cards so that they couldn't gas up the trucks. Really smart way to get them all turned around in a pre cell phone age.
I acquired my first passive matrix screen laptop today, a compaq that contained an IBM drive labelled as running apple firmware lol. I was destined to watch this video. also, I think it's worth repairing something like this, even if it had a terrible reputation. in the end it's still IT history! and if it's reputation is so bad, there are probably less of them still around, let alone in working condition
new rebrand completely caught me off guard and i had to do a double take to make sure that i was on the right channel. looks very nice!
Agreed!! It's awesome.!
I don't dislike the new, but the old music was more retro, IMO.
@@HyenaEmpyema I do like the old music

Same!!
"Stupid big cable" rolls off the tongue so much better than "HDI-30". Thanks for that.
when I was selling these back in the 90s, a lot were damaged when angled backward with the HDI-30 plug in place
Having these mini-interviews are a wonderful addition to this channel and it's videow. Can't wait to see more in the future.
Please report to TH-cam that the auto translated titles are horrible in german and there should be an easy option to disable this "feature".
it needs to be disabled by the creator so yeah, Colin please disable this option, it's disorienting and its accuracy is all over the place but usually on the worse side!
The easiest way to avoid title translations is to change the language of the TH-cam interface via your profile settings.

Really enjoyed this video! For some reason I really like the Mac hardware from this period, and the behind the scenes drama that came from it!

Ooh, the new intro music others mentioned is a fun new arrangement of the same tune! I dig the focus on FM bells and pads this time round.
