For touch devices, you could replace the grab mechanic with portal tilting, with tilt controlled by how close your finger is to the side of the screen. Alternatively, tilt could be a function of speed, with the portal righting itself when it's still.
the game looks really cute and fun. although the only one thing I find confusing is that you can hold the comet before it enters the portal. imo it should only be able to be held when it comes out of a portal
Dude, this looks so sick! I’d definitely buy this if it was released as a full game on console or Steam with more levels and maaaybe some customization options (ex: changing the colors of the portals, adding hats to the aliens, etc.). Maybe if it was a full game, we could even get a level editor or something similar to Mario Maker.
Tweak the spacebar mechanic and make it a coop 2 player game! At least that's what I immediately thought when you said it's strange controlling both portals.
Very well done! By the way! Im very interested on how you created the collisions and physics work that well in construct. I remember trying to use those and failing hard. Im very interested of how you made those for this game since it could possibly make me understand what I got it wrong in my project. Is there any way that you can share your knowledge on that? 🙏
Make it so if you move one portal up it does the opposite to the other portal. Would make it slightly easier to control but add another element of strategy. Also make it so the blocks on top of the jail can be knocked through the portal as well.
It's always amazing what one can create when put under pressure and forced to do something they wouldn't normally even think about. Some of your best projects and ideas are born in places you would never expect. Some unique art decisions can also arise from inability to draw or laziness, or even just compromising for time. Like the design of the aliens came from your indecision about their body shape. (it turned out great) A lot of really successful and great games were made almost by accident without the creator even thinking they are good. I've heard several times where someone just made a quick 24 hour game, or a prototype, or a one-off game without much commitment, and it often turns out 100x better than their actual passion project ideas. Another big thing is that those projects never get done, whereas this is a finished game.
Game looked sorta fun as I was watching the video but then when I went to play, it way exceeded my expectations! The brain stress of controlling two players while trying to judge the meteor trajectory in real-time was great! It was a fun struggle trying to free my alien friend! Great game.
This is so cool! I love the idea. I'm just barely starting in the world of game design (I'm still doing basic tutorials) but your videos are keeping me excited about finally making a game
The grab mechanics completely devalue the portal mechanic, and the game became a race agains time til that bar tech 0. A way to fix this would be to make the exit portal change the momentum of the rock as it left it, by moving the portal. I just dont know how hard it would be to implement this on top of that physics engine.
I'm not gonna lie, if I entered a game jam and the theme for the game they gave me was "Unstable." id have just submitted a file that no one could open and then say "There. Its my game, and its incredibly unstable. Won't even run for me."
I'm no game dev but Unstable makes me think of a horseriding club but it's backwards. The guests are horses and they come to look at different jockies that you've been taking care of and then go be ridden just for fun. Un-stable
It would have been cool if you made it so if you held the meteor before it went through the portal, it would be sucks into it regardless and just held on the other side and hold it there ready to fire, other then that, chefs 💋
Each block has a heath instance variable that I set in the editor. When the ball collides with it I subtract it by one and check if it's health is less than 0. If it is it runs a destroy function, if not it sets the animation frame to the current health. I don't have a lot but the check only runs when the block makes contact with the ball so I don't think it should cause much lag but I don't use that many blocks so it may be worth testing. Hope that helps.
Yeah. It's a really good game. Did you fix that part where the ball can be caught on exit? That's the only thing that could be annoyingly disorienting.
Just make a game full of bugs and liable to crash and then any game could fit the 'unstable' theme right? :P I agree. It sounds like a terrible choice for a Game Jam theme lol.
U know what could be a great or a horrible idea to add to this game? Multiplayer, one player controls the right side and the other the left side, so now is a coop coordination game
Hey why don't you plan a game contest jam. What? Yes! But why contest? Because it'll work as a tournament! But how!? Well, I'm glad you asked! Basically it would have around 3 rounds and the thing is that for evary round the devs would have to release some sort of update for the game. So you'd sort around 3 themes one for every update where every theme is like an extension of the previous theme. In the end the best game would be the one who gets the most votes on all 3 rounds. Or only at the end. Or something you think it's cool...
This game looks like it could work amazingly well on smartphones, directly controlling the portals with your thumbs
How do you catch the ball?
@@patrlim maybe you can tap the ball and the next time it goes into a portal it gets caught?

@@Sclaraidus or the portals themselves can be tapped, locking the next ball that passes through them
@@Vekcrazah perhaps
It’s rare I look at a game and just think wow, that’s a great idea. But this one was really something cool. Loved playing it and great video!
The level selection menu would look cooler if the "UFO" would slowly follow the cursor. Like in Poptropica.
It looks fun as a two player game where each person controls one portal
Looks like a brilliant combination of ideas that made this game. I really like the art style you went for, it suits the jam theme!
Nice, Ive always loved the concept of combining multiple different games together to create something unique! :)
Watching everyones reaction to the theme reveal live on your stream was hilarious.
the game looks really cute and fun. although the only one thing I find confusing is that you can hold the comet before it enters the portal. imo it should only be able to be held when it comes out of a portal
I can imagine this as a two player game, where each player controls one alien! I think it could work really well, with randos or with friends.

@@liamsmith8518 Oh! Thanks for the heads up!
You’ve got a stack of likes

This is actually a combination of four games! Pong, portal, breakout and angry birds!
game instructions: "press space to begin"

does anyone actually glance at 'ludum dare' and think "oh, that's ludum 'daah-ree'"

burnout is tough, super cool to see how much you developed in such a short time. Inspiring even
Can you not tweak the values of the physics objects in construct? You can in GDevelop. That's a strange oversight. 🤔
@Nik Oh ok. I thought that sounded strange. So that's good. 👍
Great video. Loved it!
it looks intersting and fun, time to mix more games to create something new!
really cool concept!

10:15 lmms is a pretty good FOSS DAW
It would be something special if ludumdare 50 would be a special one with like 2 or more themes combined or even a remaster of older themes

Awesome video and game! I watched this video after finishing a jam that got my confidence back after bad burnout as well, very weird coincidence haha.
6:53 - Haha. Your 2D Game has a 3D Purple Pyramid :P
I didn’t see it but after looking at it it did actually look kind of like a 3D pyramid
Past you seemed to be really kind to you this time! How nice of him!
Looks like a really interesting game, great work!

Just want to throw it out there that any dual thumbstick game would work perfectly for games like this, even the original prototype
Never in my life did I think I'd see someone turn Pong into an interesting game. This looks like a blast.
Seems like a really crazy concept!
I haven't worked with construct before, but can you not just set the objects weight to 0 or disable gravity on it?
This game made for such a good video title
Love your vids, man
Keep going 💪❤️💪❤️💪❤️
Awesome game. Thank you 😃
Combining Portal with a different game you say?......
Be right back!
Game jams are really enjoing to watch
Looks awesome
Very nice. Enjoyed the game a bunch
Ok how in the world can u merge masterpieces
Great job!!!
yeah, I think this is a more "healthy" approach to a game jam^^
i love these vids
i'm proud to say, i was watching every stream :D
I started my programming journey in construct, I thought no one knew of this "engine" was a sock too me
This would be a really good multiplayer game, akin to fire boy and water girl if you grew up during that time.
This would be a blast to play in Switch or similar handheld consoles
Just found channel and love the mustache
Can anyone Tell Me What He's Using To Make Those Sound Effects At 9:50?
This game reminds me of old 2 player flash games in a good way
This is so creative!!
Unstable was actually pretty cringe. You already know there were gonna be a lot of similar games. Pretty boring but you made it work out!

how does Vimlark do the running monkeys in the foreground?

Those flaming meatballs are making me hungry!
He should make a game where each of his mini games hes played should all be different levels for one big game
You missed the opportunity to say that game jams are your...jam
Little did they know, this wasn't angry birds, and more resembled construction fall from coolmathgames
If it had touch controls, it would be an awesome game for phones and tablets!

did you make this game?
Audio tool is cool one lol (it's what I use for my music) you can make good songs and check out other people's songs on it too.

Weird. I have your notifications set to all but haven't seen an upload or notification from you in a month.
Same
Thanks for the video, I wonder why you wouldnt control both portals in sync if you want to make the game easier to play for a broader audience?
How did you make the block health? I want to have a LOT of them and i dont want it to lag.
Maybe you can look at the source code?
Hi, not Vimlark but here's how I would do it. Make a single breaking texture and apply it over objects in their broken state
Each block has a heath instance variable that I set in the editor.
@@Vimlark Did you draw individual breaking frames for each block?
just wondering what engine u use
You got many great comets (sry for making a joke out of your accent, vim) 12:56
