I haven't heard adding tur dal in kali. We don't roast the rice and dal powder in ghee. We prepare in a different method. We cook roasted mung dal first, add 1.25 times jaggery + 4 times water, 2 tea spoons ghee and cardamom powder and boil. Then add the rice powder ( rice washed and dried and roasted till light brown in colour and powdered to rava texture). Make it like a upma. Then just steam it for 10 minutes, in a pressure cooker. Finally add grated coconut and cashews roasted in ghee. Since the rice is dry roasted, u will have to cook adding enough water, or else it will lead to stomach related problems as mentioned by you.
Your mom is so dhaaralam in cashews 😀 Amazing taste always when our mother makes for us. It can never compete with the taste and our childhood memories. My mom used to keep separate dabba of Kali for my friends. Otherwise I would have nothing left during lunchtime 😀 Sweet ol'times

We make it exactly the way you mentioned. Rakesh’s mum’s version seems to be a variation of the traditional method or possibly an Iyengar version.
