The thavala dosai you mention my Amma used to make it in small sizes on the dosa thava with lots of oil making it crispy and flavoured with coconut in the doughd.The way you mentioned it brings back nostalgic memories of my Amma
Hi Mami, thavala dosai is also a favorite of mine. Rice and paruppu broken to rava consistency and soaked in pulicha thayir. After 8 hours of fermentation, we add mustard, dals, curry leaves, salt, hing, mor milaga and prepare in curved chatti. The cooking takes a little long but, as you said, not 45 minutes. I absolutely love it with milaga podi.
Shall surely make this idli. Is this a traditional recipe or is it your family speciality only. The reason I am asking is because my mother has never made this idli though she knows a lot of traditional recipes.

Aunty is very modern in thought and communication and traditional in living style. Aunty Are both thippili you have used are from same plant?

I'm definitely going to try.in case we don't hav dosa dough can we add udad dal and rice extra while soaking?.ur mom she mentioned abt the tavala dosai we make it in our house. My grand mom used to make .I was happy wen she mentioned .I hav searched for it in the net.it is not there.pls try to show us that recipe too.thanks for sharing such traditional recipes and continue and make this a dishes a trend with the new gen.u both rock👍
This is very similar to Dhokla made in Gujarat. The only difference is moddhu idli is made in idli stand where as dhokla is made in big plate and then cut into diamond shape and served with green chatney

Mami ithu enna athil pannuva but without toordal for devasam. Called devasathu idly and thavala dosai also made in the big brass vessel coated with tin. Yes it Wd take 45 mins to one hr and kept in a water plate to remove the thavala dosai from that pan. Nostalgic memories.
