How to find thermals, Speedster style

  • How to thermal a RC glider with the good old down wind technique, Instead of flying upwind where you almost fly blindfolded in terms of thermals (Unless there is circling birds or other indications that there is lift) it is much better to have a wind indicator that shows the point where the wind is blowing to. Wait for a small Wind direction change or an increase in wind speed from the normal, and fly to that point or just a bit more upwind than this,, and when you find the thermal just start to circle and let it drift with the wind.
My gliders will rock the wings, lift the tail and accelerate when flying into a thermal, wait around 3 second and start the turn.
And a good rule when searching for for thermals: never make a down wind turn if you don't have lift, if you don't have lift at first, then you will fly back in the same bad air again :)
And on full house gliders also use the rudder in the thermal turn :)
    Good luck
    Soren

Probably the best video of how to chase a thermal.. Thank you. I remember all those years ago my instructor kicking me in the rear end with " Keep upwind dummy " but that was without powered models.

This is the first YT video I have seen that clearly describes the tendency of the prevailing wind in the presence of thermals.. WELL DONE. I spend a lot of time standing with a DLG in my hand thinking about the air motion around me.

The happy sound of a variometer in lift! It's almost a narcotic effect, full scale or RC.

Hej Speedster you know your place perfectly. Like an other thermal glider pilot you have to read the wind. But your description helps a lot to anticipate what happens next. I will try this in spring at my favorite place to be - Pfersdorf in Frankonia.

I only just finished my first RC glider build, a wooden DLG. Surprisingly I got it to be exactly 300 grams. First few flights, I was setting up the controls and a launch mode. After a while, I've been getting use to watching which wing dips and which one raises. There'd be moments I'd chuck it up, start circling and realize I should've landed already. What a joy!
I got the wooden DLG to test my ability to set up a composite performance model later on. It also gave me something to do for the winter.

In the days before technical assistance, I just followed the birds riding the thermals, or get above dark areas where the heat rises.
stayed up until I was tired of flying.

Det er såmænd ikke så galt, De fleste ny Spektrum sendere undtagen E modellerne kan, og prisen er ca 2000kr og Flysky kan også, der sparer man nok ca 500kr

Just caught by chance this video channel really informative and also current up to recent issue so this is great.
I like it in English as well nice of you to consider us.
Have also seen you really slow up the model in landings not just bop it in to the spot that I have seen in your other landings training video.
Fantastic content is it a 4s setup you have there.
I am waiting on my Eternitys to be ready. 🤗
