just discovered rotten areas in the transom of my boat rebuild (sounded solid a few months ago while it was wet but has since dried out inside my shop and now it is definitely a hollow sound) this video is going to come in handy now.

Hello there. I have a 1977 24ft Nisqually with a 5.7, 280 out drive. It’s not picking up water through muffs. I pulled the water pickup hose from where it connects to the outdrive and put my water hose into it feeding up to the pump up in front of the engine. That works as it should with no overheating. My question is; from where the hose connects to the outdrive, down to the water pickup holes in the lower unit. Is there a pump/impeller or other mechanisms that could fail causing water to not go up to the hose?

Excellent video, very helpful! I have a hole in my drive bellows and it’s leaking a steady stream of oil. Any idea how oil is getting in there? Is there a gasket seal or a O ring in there that could be blown. Thanks! I had it out on the water so the oil is milky looking, hopefully it didn’t cause to much damage.

Mine leaks oil as well, but only very little. I may have to rebuild the upper unit on the sterndrive to fix the leak. I might try to rebuild it this winter. I'll be sure to make a video.

Doesn't that steering pin pivot when the drive turns? I don't get how they get so stuck

Hi I've done engineering in some very bad corrosive places that white powder is aluminum oxide salt corrosion on aluminium for your bolts use Anti seize copper coat is good or a marine version and the chips in the paint i would dill wire brush them and treat with salt away and used a white ceramic paint for touch up and new tec body filler sets like steel and has fiberglass in it

you can also sand it, spray with krylon etching primer, paint with a enamel spray and clear coat it.. all rattlecan..

the reverse linkage is so when you reverse the drive will not fling up

That makes sense. I thought it might have let the drive come up if you hit something underwater.

It is also the locking mechanism for the outdrive tilt. It is a handy way to access the exhaust bellows and raw water intake clamps as well as the shift cable bolts.

I pulled out my uni joint bellow and there was some water that came out. Roughly about 100-200 cc. That's not normal, is it? There shouldn't be any water in it, right?

Was there a hole in the bellows?
