@Tech & Gaming Input lag and response time are different things. Input lag is how long it takes between the signal being sent to the TV and the TV displaying the signal (a button being pressed on the controller and the character reacting on screen). Response time is how long it takes for the pixels to refresh each frame, which results in better motion clarity and less blur. Modern OLEDs are generally great in both regards, though.
It would be interesting to know what the best way to connect is with regards to picture/sound quality and lag. For example if I connect everything to the TV and use ARC will I get any sound lag, and if I connect my source to the receiver will I get picture lag or worse PQ?
Just got an AV receiver and have the PS5 direct to the TV and earc back to the AV using pass through on the TV. Seems to work perfectly and I've certainly not noticed any audio lag.
Vincent, on all your game console videos you preach about calibrating HDR with the console's HDR calibration app in HGIG picture mode. All across the internet I've seen most people say that the majority of games don't use the console's HDR calibration data so it's all kind of useless right now. Indeed, when I play HDR games with HGIG the picture is extremely dull/dim and without highlights. Even the PS5 UI itself is quite dull with HGIG enabled. I was hoping you can comment on this.
Vincent won't listen to me about HGiG, it is broken. Fixed with Autocal though. Seems the internal pattern generator bypasses the issue, hence why Autocal fixed it, maybe he'll stop relying on graphs and actually look into it.
You don't need the amp to support VRR and Dolby Vision as you can feed video direct to TV from Series X then feed the audio through EARC to the AMP. As long as your AMP has EARC input there would be no need to upgrade to a newer one unless you really wanted to.
@@DEVILTAZ35 yes, but that would make the point of this video pointless. As it is for the scenario where all HDMI 2.1 devices are plugged into the amp/soundbar so it can also act as a HDMI Switcher. @@n25992 depends on where your TV is relative to your other components. If you wall mount your TV, it is easier and cleaner to just run one HDMI cable from receiver to TV than multiple for each device. If that makes sense. With HDMI-CEC and universal control, it is possible to switch av receiver inputs using the TV remote. Though with eARC the idea of TV being the hub is being pushed around. It makes sense to make the AV receiver cheaper and also not obsolete as soon as a new HDMI standard comes out. But its not optimal for certain setups to plug everything into the TV. Wall mounted TVs and projectors come to mind specifically. It is annoying enough to run 1 cable up the wall. Imagine running several..
Great video.... My problem is not in the eARC part, per se.... I have an older Onkyo TX-NR616 and a Samsung TV... The problem is output levels. When I watch a TV App show, say in Netflix, then switch to Net - to listen to some Smooth Jazz on the Receiver.. the sound is totally blasting with the Jazz.... This is because although Netflix has adequate volume, I have to put it to 75 or so on the receiver to hear it Ok... If I forget to lower the receiver volume when switching it to Net on the receiver remote... then you guessed it- Wham! Pow! Not sure what the solution is. The receiver does have a input-specific volume adjust setting... but it's not enough to make them somewhat even. Will newer equipment fix this?
Would love to see a review of the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX505. Been waiting on HDM2.1 to get sorted out but would really like to know about input lag (if I connect a SX to the receiver, then the receiver to the TV).

From my old days of selling AV gear, I recall Onkyo always being on the cutting edge of niche features, even if the overall product was not as competitive with the bigger names.
From 8 minute onward, you showed a window desktop screen running at 4k 120hz vrr hdr to demonstrate the rtx gpu ran without issues with the onkyo. However, at around 8:34, the screen suddenly flashed and if you look at the top right corner, the hz number started changing (it was at a constant 120hz before the flash). What was going on there? Is this sth to be worried about?

Because I have both next gen systems and I've been anxiously awaiting the update as well along with the HDMI adapter for my Denon x4700H
Nice but is it really necessary seeing tv's like the new LG's have 4 HDMI 2.1 ports anyway. Latest receivers were handy when they skimped on HDMI outlets on the TV's but those days seem to be gone. I Just use a Yamaha A3060 amp , feed video signal directly to the TV and use EARC to feed the sound to the amp for say Series X. Then with the Oppo 203 player as LG tv's no longer have DTS support i just use the dual HDMI outputs and feed the picture straight to the tv and the other HDMI directly to AMP for sound on DVD's Blurays etc. It works perfectly. I think people are getting a bit too caught up in saying they need HDMI 2.1 ports when HDMI 2.0 ports is what most items still require apart from latest gaming consoles and these have been on Yamaha and other decent amps for a few years. The only thing i can't use is DTS sound on the Series X as it only has 1 HDMI port but you can still use DTS Headphone support direct from console anyway.
We all want to know this but the universe has conspired to keep this a secret. It’s a conspiracy and so do not expect any straight answers. We are NOT to know.

Excellent. Now if only we could get A/V preamp/processors with working HDMI 2.1 rolled out, for those of us who use separates.
How is the audio lag?
I love rhythm games, and some get unplayable on most AV receivers
Usually the tvs fault it's proccessing the image and sound diffrently and it ends up like that
@Tech & Gaming TV uses time to process the image
Yep, the best determination of lag for me is Rock Band. My current Onkyo, HDMI to HDMI does fine.
@Tech & Gaming Input lag and response time are two completely different things.
Onkyo/Pioneer doing IT right with real HDMI 2.1 and not only 1 Input plus Dirac ! Only Auromatic is now missing 👍
I wish there was some kinda google doc floating around confirming this kinda test for multiple AVRs
Vincent where is the miniled monitor review and comparison to LG's 32 inch OLED monitor. Also can you ask LG about 42 inch OLED. We are still waiting.
It would be interesting to know what the best way to connect is with regards to picture/sound quality and lag. For example if I connect everything to the TV and use ARC will I get any sound lag, and if I connect my source to the receiver will I get picture lag or worse PQ?
I plan on using earc bc I don't like the idea of running video thru the receiver first.
Just got an AV receiver and have the PS5 direct to the TV and earc back to the AV using pass through on the TV. Seems to work perfectly and I've certainly not noticed any audio lag.
@@BobtheWidget123456 you could even cut doen on the cords by using an optical cable .
If you want to avoid the issue at all, just bypass the amp altogether and use ARC for sound...
Like the other posters suggested, can you do a lag test with and without it? Does it have a working volume overlay in vrr mode?
That's very interesting, but what about input lag?
I would love to see input lag through these. Ill be waiting for a Yamaha personally but Im not looking to replace my rxa780 just yet, still too new.
I think Yamaha is promising some firmware update.
I wouldn't buy anything yet until the update actually arrives and works.
Have you tested Dolby Gaming 120hz with the new LG firmware?
Is the firmware update available now On the C1?!
@@UnitedRedDevil13 Yes. FW 03.11.23
@@JumpRopeLift awesome! That’s great news. Thanks!
We have done a previous video explaining the benefits of HGiG here: th-cam.com/video/VGO38f1EoYE/w-d-xo.html
Vincent won't listen to me about HGiG, it is broken. Fixed with Autocal though. Seems the internal pattern generator bypasses the issue, hence why Autocal fixed it, maybe he'll stop relying on graphs and actually look into it.
But will it support HDMI 2.1 VRR Dolby Vision HDR? Soon to be on LG OLED and Xbox Series X
Using eARC avoids the amp incompatibility issue but doesn't solve the problem of having to plug everything into the TV directly.
@@xFrozenxSnowx isn’t it better to just plug all to the tv so that can easily switch input using only the tv remote . I don’t see the advantage of plugging things to the aV receiver..
@@xFrozenxSnowx I agree with you but performance wise is there any difference?
My Marantz SR 7015 is now allmost a year old and does this too without any problem…
Finally indeed! Though i am looking at Marantz or Pioneer.
Lots of people have asked: “what about lag?”
No response from the grandmaster?
I hope this will be in the next Marantz NR Slim one soon. Before that happens, no reason to switch out my first gen Panasonic 4K HDR10 TV.
Would love to see a review of the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX505. Been waiting on HDM2.1 to get sorted out but would really like to know about input lag (if I connect a SX to the receiver, then the receiver to the TV).
Do we think that Panasonic will use the same chipset in their TVs this year (appreciate Nuvoton Technology bought their chip business - but lets hope so)
I hope so as I will be buying one next month. 🤞🏾
Another great video! Will you be testing out the Denon 8k adapter they sent out to fix the HDMI 2.1 issue with the Series X?
From my old days of selling AV gear, I recall Onkyo always being on the cutting edge of niche features, even if the overall product was not as competitive with the bigger names.
ONKYO IS BACK
Denon sells AVR 760H at Costco. Around $450. Newest one supposedly does HDMI 2.1. Too bad you can't get it there in UK.
That's what VRR is
HDTVTest is there any advantage to plugging devices directly into your receiver then connecting your receiver to your TV compared to plugging all devices to your TV then connecting your TV to your receiver?
Nice content, very informative!
Wow! Cool!👍 Other brands ... silence?
...they say this receiver consumes a lot of electricity?
Thanks Onkyo
Can you test input lag added when running though this thing?
If it’s being used as ‘Pass Through’ then there’s no input lag, as it’s being passed through
@@MovieCaveDave even an elgato capture card that says "zero lag" passthrough actually adds a small amount of lag... linus tech tips did a test with a lot of hdmi devices and they all added some small amount of lag
I have a Denon 3700h I did some tests on it's passthrough running to a c9. Comparing it to an Acer x27 predator. Using a millisecond counter and camera with 1/1000th shutter, The c9 showed more recent frames no matter what inputs (on the AVR) or outputs (on the video card)I used.
Whatever latency there was was very low.
You know, I find your dialogue comes in a little heavy for my taste. It feels like the bass is a little boosted, almost like theres some clipped distortion. It may be whats called the “proximity effect”. My friend had a similar hot bass effect with his mic, and we trouble shooted it by having the mic angled away from his mouth, it was almost 90 degrees off axis before it began sounding natural. Maybe try it out, :D
Thanks Vincent. This is great news for xbox gamers.
It's nice to have a receiver actually do what it says it can do. I'm so tired of having my ps5 connected directly to my 77" LG OLED C9 using that eARC thing with my Yamaha receiver. It's very glitchy and annoying. Even switching back to the AVR HDMI Inputs is Glitchy.
What you mean its glitchy ? . The sound ?
Hi Vincent, love your channel. I was wondered, since you interviewed the Samsung rep about the Q90R, which I have the 82"version, and you asked about the eARC update that the 2019 models were supposed to get, have you ever followed up on that promise? Because I have both next gen systems and I've been anxiously awaiting the update as well along with the HDMI adapter for my Denon x4700H
400 $ - 500 $ device (XSX or PS5) for 7 years which does already 4K60. Boom! 🤘🏻
How is the latency of going through the receiver compared to going straight into the TV???
We all want to know this but the universe has conspired to keep this a secret. It’s a conspiracy and so do not expect any straight answers. We are NOT to know.
straight is always better, but i do not feel any different . maybe i just dont care to the utmost detail, as long as i can play it fine without noticeable delay its fine. at least for me, not too hardcore gamer for 30 years
bump!
Id like to know this also
Damn, a few hours ago, I was surpriced by a firmware update om my Onkyo reciever. And know this. Not so death after alll.
Still waiting for my HDMI 2.1 magic fix box from Denon, that they told me they sent.... but did they ... hmmm
I got mine yesterday. Works as advertised so at least you have that to look forward to
Hey Vincent, great video! Just one thing... with the Nvidia Pendulum demo, for some reason the FPS starts high and then pulls right down. In the bottom left corner you can pull up two FPS sliders (min and max). Drag them both up to the max screen framerate to make it super extra buttery smooth 👌
Wahhh!! I don't wanna give up my trusty Denon x6200w but I really want this for my series x!!
You don't need it as long as you have a TV with enough 1.2 inputs for what you need though. Unless the Denon doesn't have EARC?
Does using this receiver eliminate your ability to put the C1 or CX into PC mode? How do you manage all the the different optimizations for each device?
Hey Vincent, can you make a video about the new firmware update for LG CX?
Using Pass through on my TV so it's not an issue anyway.
I do the same but I find I get a touch of audio latency using EARC with my series x.
@@Sedge86 Also a CX but not noticed any latency.
@@BobtheWidget123456 don't go looking for it lol. Once I noticed it I can't un-notice it
