- Sunderland Echo reporter Kevin Clark, with the help of author Dr Mark Blacklock, takes us through the case of 'Wearside Jack' John Humble - the Sunderland hoaxer who significantly derailed the investigation into the Yorkshire Ripper murders of the late 1970s and early '80s.
Dear George , you were told numerous times by that girl who survived a hammer attack that he had a Bradford accent , she told you till she was blue in the face but you continuously ignored her !!!!!!! . . . .
The man was a total idiot.
How on earth did he get to be in charge
How on earth did he get to be in charge
George Oldfield couldn't catch a cold. First class bellend
the police is totally corrupted, nobody gets promoted on results or having active brain cells@@thomaspridmore106
My grandad, by then in his late 70s and from Millfield, was questioned to be ruled out of the enquiry, as he came from Millfield. It was a massive enquiry at the time and a national sensation.
I can hardly make a word out in this audio, but very intresting, thanks👍
you'd think they would get someone who can enunciate properly
One hell of a bad distasteful joke, cost loads of lives…and the thick coppers especially Oldfield believed it.
Turned out he lived at the top of our street . Never knew anything about him. His house was sprayed in graffiti soon after he was arrested .
I used to live in flodden Road and you often seen him walking down the road.
Who would have thought at the time what he had done?
@@paulmorrison4983Humble was a vulnerable drunk from Sunderland targeted by corrupt cops to plug that huge hole in the case against sutcliffe. How come nobody recognised the voice in 1979/80?
He had almost killed his brother Harry and that's how they forced him to cooperate.
He never stood a chance of clearing himself because the cops claimed they had matched his dna to the letters, a complete lie but the tabloids had everybody convinced he was the hoaxer. . There was nothing of the letters left, they were all incinerated after sutcliffe's conviction including his leggings which proved he was a deviant sexual predator. The real ripper was let off the hook and he was the man who posted the letters in Sunderland to divert the cops up there
he was a god send to sutcliffe or he devil
i bet he was unpopular in the area
Ford estate? @@paulmorrison4983
What a useless piece of crap and waste of space Humble was. To think that had Oldfield not been so full of hubris and 'Wearside Jack' not muddied the waters, three women would have been spared such a brutal murder.
That hoaxer should have got more than 8years for what he did definitely sick in the head nevertheless he's dead now if he hadn't have taunted the police the way he did then Sutcliffe would have been caught much sooner.
I totally agree with you.
Well presented and researched
Two things - why didn't the Police ever think the accent may have been faked to throw them off the scent? And the murder of Yvonne Pearson should have proved the letters a hoax as the count by then was nine (she was yet to be discovered). Yet the letter said the count was eight - the real killer would have known the correct count. Once Yvonne was found they should have realised the letter writer's mistake.
As a Sunderland lad, I knew by the accent that this was someone from Pennywell Sunderland,, (but who)
He was from Ford estate mate same shit hole I was from .
John humble lived in the next street from me .
Imagine keeping that secret for all of them years
I mean he tried to tell them it was a hoax... terrible thing to do considering what happened but he can't have known it would completely F the investigation.
That he lived in the next street to you?

@@legitbeans9078what did expect would happen if not diverting the investigation,I don’t know why they put so much stock on his accent,my thoughts were always that he could just be putting on a fake accent to throw the police off,but they never entertained that possibility.
Where were his brother and sister? They didnt hear those recordings and know it was their brother? Just curious if they were ever questioned afterwards?
seems odd to me that nobody in the same street knew it was him making the hoax, i cant believe everyone sounded the same in the street or area
@@notfooledbybreadorcircus yes, surely someone would have known his voice, apparently the police didn't even speak to him during their time investigating, they just missed him, as he was out at the time.
He dodged the bullet for years but it finally caught up with him in the end.
Sutcliffe could have been caught earlier if the SIO had listened to a junior CID officer using a £5 note and his coppers instict.
What I don't understand is:
HOW no one in Humble's family, not his brother nor his wife,
recognized his voice on the tapes?!
Apparently the tapes were played everywhere in public constantly, even in supermarkets and on the radio.
Everywhere there was a PA system...and even broadcast from police cars in motion.
Humble's voice must not have been very "distinctive"?
Given how easy it was for 3 people to identify Stephen Young from a MUCH SHORTER clip played on Crimewatch UK,
two of whom were supposedly his family members.
Stephen Young, was the insurance agent who murdered Harry and Nicola Fuller.
When he was a kid he lived in Falmouth Square, we lived opposite, the whole family were a bit dodgy, even as kids.
The same guy who framed Stefan Klitchko convinced the West Yorkshire Police that this tape was from the Ripper. He knew full well it was not and covering up for the real Ripper.
Dick Holland or Dickhead?? Yes from what I know he was a bully he wrongfully accused an innocent taxi driver of the murders committed by Sutcliffe but only released the cabbie whilst an attack or murder was committed!! Yes he was a bully.
Weirdside jack.
The tape wasn't available in the shops. It was a tape for singles used by DJs and the music industry. This is wrong.
Why was he given a new identity when he was released from prison..? Why don't you investigate that.?
they claimed the hoaxer had the same blood group as the killer of the woman mentioned in one of the letters, from a time before the rippers killing spree started. i presume Humble was not connected in any way ,so that murder is still unsolved.
Apparently, the ""real"" killer was eventually traced, but overdosed on {something} after he was arrested for drink driving and had his DNA taken.
Apparently, he wrote a note "confessing" to killing Joan Harrison, which was beside him when he was found.
This video really misses out some fairly huge bits of information, particularly about why Humble did it. The borstal he was sent to was Medolsmley Road detention centre. The centre is now absolutely notorious because of the physical and sexual abuse that staff inflicted on the young inmates - police now believe that a number of the staff were part of a wider paedophile ring. Many have since been jailed. Humble was seriously abused in there and it left him with a burning hatred of the police. Humble actually went to a police station at one point and turned himself in, but wasn't believed. The FBI had also been asked to listen to the tapes and had warned George Oldfield that they were a hoax (as did several other officers in the UK). It seems though that Oldfield was such a monumental egotist that he ignored all of them.
How wasn't he caught?
I was reliably, told by a member of the police working on the case, at the time there was more to this tip and it actually described in detail of one of the murders, and it is still thought to this day the humble had something to do with that murder, but there was no evidence found
Actually that murder had been in the papers. The police were just too thick to realise that and they tunnel visioned in on the letters and tape.
Reading several books on The Ripper the agreement was Humble only ever talked about things known in the public domain, if the Police has researched a little more they would have realised it said nothing new. Forces didn't share info but Humble was an avid reader of such crimes so knew mire than some coppers

There wasn't really a distinction of 'Geordie' and 'Macken' in the late 1970s, it is a more recent distinction. It is probably hard for people south of Richmond, North Yorkshire to appreciate the distinctions.
No your wrong , there's always been rivalry between Geordies and its MACKEMS ! . . . .
B.S.
It's hard for people north of Richmond and North Yorkshire to distinguish southern accents.
It's 'Mackem' with an 'M'. At least get that right.
maybe half right, i think you meant to say that those far removed from the north east had no distinction between Geordies and mackems, which might be so, but there was always a difference.
yes i met pat when he worked at the darlington paper sadley pat died
My dad lived in number 2 0 Flodden rd
Jimmy saville was on the investigation team need i say more
As bad as he was this Humble did not cause the death of 3 more women, the incompetence, arrogance, sexism, etc, caused that and to all the others. Several witnesses had already described the attacked as black haired, swarthy looking, bearded, deep stirring eyes, and a BRADFORD/Local accent! If they had listened and followed up on other vital evidence the Ripper would have been caught by the summer of 79 especially as he was interviewed 9 times. Obviously, Humble deserved to get 10 years in prison.
This John Humble guy was a nut, and he was obviously guilty of wasting police time. But for me the more serious accusation of perverting the course of justice was wrongly holding him responsible for the police's own huge incompetence. There were good reasons why they should have treated his hoax letters and the tape with extreme skepticism. They even had clear testimony from a survivor who insisted her attacker had a Yorkshire accent not a Wearside accent - but they just discounted that and chose instead to attach more credibility to cranky communications from a random stranger! If he got 8 years for this, it was 1 year for the actual deed, and 7 for making the police look bad.
Shows you He’s been locked up all these years And dies of covid
BY THE WAY, I CAME FROM SUNDERLAND. WE ARE NOT GEORDIES.

You are a lucky man the police never charged you otherwise they would have 'made' the evidence fit you!

THIS BASTARD ALMOST RUINED MY LIFE. BECAUSE OF THESE TAPES, THEY THOUGHTBHECAME FROM ONE MILE OF MY MUM'S HOUSE. PERTER SUTCLIFFE DID NOT COME FROM THERE. I LOOKED LIKESUTCLIFFE, I DROVE MY WAGONS AROUND THE SAME REGION HAS HE. PICKING UP PRODUCE FOR MY BUSINESS. THREE SEPERATE POLICE REGIONS PULLED ME IN OVER THESE MURDERS. I GUESS, ON REFLECTIO, I WOULD HAVE DONE SO TOO. EACH FORCE WERE UNAWARE THAT I HAD BEEN PULLED IN. SOME FORCES ACTED PROFESSIONALLY WHILE OTHERS WERE BASTARDS. MY RESPECT FOR THE POICE WENT DOWN THE DRAIN,
