      George Foreman definitely knows who he is and will gladly teach him as he already taught a former heavyweight champ in Daniel Cormier some boxing tricks
      And training with Roberto Duran is unlikely but not impossible
      Duran is very friendly and likes sharing his tricks with fighters and newbies
      Francis with the sticky hands technique, and the manipulation tactics of George Foreman and their superb knowledge of cutting the ring will make Francis a living nightmare 😬

      I wouldn't say Francis learned to wrestle "well" dude, he learned some basic takedown defence and some very basic takedowns which combined with his bulk are pretty effective against a much smaller wrestler (Stipe is like 20 lighter than Francis it's nuts) and against a guy who's much less experienced in MMA (but still had a better ground game for some reason) and again also significantly smaller. If you had a legit grappling threat like Prime Fedor or Kevin Randleman from the old Pride day's, or even someone like Prime Couture or Lesnar, they would just submit Francis despite the difference in size. Stipe is a decent wrestler to be sure, but we never really saw an extended grappling matchup like the first fight, he went for a single takedown, failed, and then decided to box Ngannou for whatever reason (one of the worst decisions in MMA history). Francis learned to wrestle, but it's below the level of his striking.
      I also don't think he's going to actually work on techncial striking either, he's been fighting for more than 11 years and has yet to actually change up his fighting style. He's going to do exactly what he did in MMA, rely on simple pocket fighting traps and headhunt. But someone like Fury is going to tear him apart technically (like Gane), and I'm fairly sure Wilder can KO Francis given they are both heavyweight power hitters but Wilder is a much better boxer.
      Francis has insane potential, the current HWD was too lacklustre to force him to grow into it, but I don't think some exhibition matches in Boxing (let's face it he's not actually going to become a boxer) are going to do anything now. I also don't see him tracking down Boxing greats like Foreman and getting trained by them, but I would like to see it

    One thing that these style switchups show is how complete of an mma fighter someone truly is. These are the people that can do anything in the cage. They have a high fight IQ, they know when they are winning and losing in a fight, they are quickly decisive, and they finish when necessary. Fighters like Usman, Whitaker, Jones, Volk, Yair, and Schevchenko. There are of course more examples, but that's just to name a few.

    • @AveSicarius
      @AveSicarius ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most people underestimate how effective just being a high level generalist can be though, and before recent fights it was only really Jon Jones that you could talk about and have people instantly understand how good a complete fighter can be.
      Kamaru Usman is one of the best fighters alive, who stomped through a division filled with high level wrestler's, knocked out people who tried to stand-up with him, and has one of the longest win streak's and title runs in the sport.
      In fact Usman long ago exceeded the title defences of someone like Khabib, he had a 15-0 win streak in the UFC and cleaned out the division, and was well ahead of Leon Edwards until that beautiful head kick landed. But I really don't see him mentioned much at all relative to certain other fighters (like Khabib, or now Islam) despite that.
      I think there's a lot of focus on specialists like Khabib/Islam, Conor McGregor, Adesanya, and, before he left, Francis (who's less of a specialist and more of a bull let loose in the ring) over generalists, and I think this is largely because they can put on dominant performances against people who try to match or cannot defend against that specialization (which many take as them being "better" despite all it indicating is a stylistic advantage). Even back in the day there was so much focus on the poster child specialists like Ronda Rousey, and this hasn't really changed that much with the biggest fighters in the sport still largely being specialists.
      Hopefully people realize after the recent Volkanovski vs Makachev fight that to be truly great at MMA, you need high level basics in every aspect of the sport before you even consider making your own style. Any striking specialist would get eaten alive by Islam if they didn't have insane TDD, any grappling specialist would have to compete with him where he excels, but a guy who can do both at a high level, well clearly that's really hard to deal with.
      I'm honestly hoping we see more evolution towards style's like Volkanovski's, Usman's, or Jones'. Frankly it's more interesting to watch because they can setup anything from anywhere. The reason GSP could outwrestle elite wrestlers was by setting up takedowns with striking off of that wicked jab, and then when he got them down, pummelling them until he could maintain a good position. You get such interesting combinations when someone is good at both striking and grappling!

      Sorry dude, too much time on my hands and no real outlet for MMA discussion haha. Thanks for being patient and reading through it! Also would absolutely agree on DJ, one of the most well rounded and skilled fighters out there, if he was in a more popular division he would be in the same sentence as Jon Jones for even more casual fan's.
      Mighty Mouse has done things in the cage that make him look like a Street Fighter character more than a normal human. I think there's one clip of him suplexing (which he transitioned into from a wicked combination) his opponent and before they land he's already secured the armbar. It's nuts, and I know some people are biased against flyweight due to the notion of it not being as competitive, but Cejudo vs DJ 2 was a great showcase of two very good fighters with well-rounded skillsets (DJ just being superb in every angle and Cejudo having great wrestling and very solid boxing, the age old MMA combo). There's some controversy oved the decision as it was close, but still a great fight. Volkanovski vs Makachev actually reminded me of this a little bit, it was a very arguable decision (on both sides) that was decided by offensive grappling regarding the scoring.

My former partner was trying to convince my of something similar, or at least wanted me to try writing in an accessible online form like she did herself. I'm considering it, but need to sort other shit out first, pretty much life gets in the way. I'm a huge fan of Jack Slack's approach towards MMA discussion, so I wouldn't mind doing long form discussion of some kind at a point in the future when I have my shit together.
      DJ was criminally mistreated, regardless of talent, but given his skills it's even more ridiculous that they drove him into the arm's of ONE, like honestly I don't know how the UFC is going to continue forward when they keep alienating their top talent. First DJ, now Ngannou, the only people left are going to be guys like Jon Jones who've screwed up so badly they don't have another option...

    Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Dan Henderson basically change up his style because of his serious back and spine issues? I mean if you think about his like latter half this career he basically never wrestled which is weird coming from somebody who has and insanely impressive set of wrestling credentials. From what I have gathered that's basically why he shuffles and if it's hunched all the time but is able to continue to throw the right because it's one of the few things that doesn't bother him or cause him pain but that's why it's all hunched over all the time like I'm pretty sure he's at spin multiple surgeries to correct?

    Bit more recent but mackachev showing he could strike with the best of them in the Olivera fight was something

    • @madgavin7568
      @madgavin7568 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I knew Makhachev had underrated striking but even I was surprised at how good he look on the feet in that fight. He used Oliveira's pressure and recklessness against him by cracking him with counters. He also neutralized Oliveira's deadly clinch game as well. And the fact Makhachev was able to stand toe-to-toe with Alexander Volkanovski who is one of the best strikers in the UFC, is highly impressive.

    • @AveSicarius
      @AveSicarius ปีที่แล้ว

      Oliveria wasn't on form regarding his striking though, he was headhunting without any set-up. He does have a reckless style, but if you look at how he was actually fighting in the Makachev title fight he's very different to how he performed in his recent matches. He's so focused on the headhunt that he ignores everything else, runs onto a counter, and obviously the rest is history.
      I honestly think that he lost the mental game, look at the surrounding buildup to the fight. Charles' is basically treated as the underdog, as if he's already lost, after being stripped of his title, meanwhile the fight is booked in Dubai, not Brazil as one might expect, and the UFC is virtually already promoting Islam as champion to get that juicy Khabib fanbase. Charles' in the interviews is adamant he's going to KO Islam, and just like Aldo Vs McGregor charges in chin first onto a hard counter. Mental health is a huge part of any fight, and Charles seemed to be falling apart in the buildup to this.
      Islam has very basic striking, but what he does have is great accuracy (something Volk talked about too), and he uses this to land solid counters against fighters even if they are a technically better fighter than he is. Combined with his counter takedown threat, it makes the prospect of trying to push through his reach rather dangerous (the takedown on Volk in the fourth round was a counter as Volk blitzed in to move past Islam's reach). It's less his striking alone, he'd get eaten alive in a pure striking matchup even with a smaller guy like Volk, it's more that combined with his other skills it's good enough to deal with most people. Still needs work though.
      It's a more advanced version of Khabib's far more basic striking. If someone is so worried about the takedown, they are less likely to be watching your hands, letting you land shots you might not otherwise be able to.

    • @AveSicarius
      @AveSicarius ปีที่แล้ว

      @@madgavin7568
      I think the Charles fight was very much to do with Charles' mental state as much as it was the striking matchup itself. Charles was headhunting, he wasn't setting anything up, and he was clearly not using whatever gameplan his camp had come up with to deal with Islam. He normally has a reckless style, but he looked very different from when he fought objectively better striker's. It's like Aldo Vs McGregor, if you lose the mental game, and focus too much on trying to get a quick KO to prove yourself, it's very easy to get caught by a counter, especially if the opponent is an accurate counterstriker, which Islam is.
      I would point out that Islam is a counter striker that is four inches taller than Volk (Volk has one inch longer arm's but he's still at a significant effective reach disadvantage), if he's not landing there, that's a real issue, especially for a counter striker. Islam found it very easy to land body kicks precisely because of that difference in length, and Volk basically has to run through counters to get to his preferred range, were he the same height as Islam I think the standup would have looked very different. The size advantage is also notable regarding power, but Volk is a freak and somehow not only took no real damage but also managed to outmuscle Islam at various points. But still Islam is a good 8-10 kilos heavier on fight night most likely, so that's a big difference in power.
      What Islam has is great accuracy (Volk himself talked about how good his eye is after the fight), his actual striking, technically speaking, is very basic. But he sits down on counters and can accurately tag guys time and time again, which is very effective when combined with his grappling skillset. He's still got a long way to go though, the fact that Alex could get anywhere near him and continually do damage despite that is both a sign that Volkanovski is an MMA god, but also that Islam has holes in his gameplan right now.
      I think Islam is a solid fighter with great potential, but I think his striking game gets overhyped quite a bit. I'd like to see if he could go to Welterweight (arguably his natural division) and compete with a guy like Usman who's closer in size but also very well rounded (they are the same height and the build isn't that different).
