The segment on Kimbo says this exact statement that he himself was a success for the org. but not as a fighter. Sometime people just come along that people want to have a “what if” answered and he was epitome of this, once per decade, “what if” of the 2000-10 era.
Absolutely, and to be fair, he was a tough hard-nosed “street scrapper/brawler” and he was good at that, honestly if BKFC woulda been around at the time, he might’ve done much better there. Another thing.. he was already in his mid/upper 30s when he started, so his prime was on fumes, he was late to MMA yet had the courage to not only try it, stepped into the biggest organizations, UFC, Bellator, I think even EliteFC. Just an afterthought in retrospect, a different experiment was a success, as you said, there's a gap between trained fighters and tough guys on the street. It's really motivating for guys² that are not big or built big. Kimbo one of the first what I call "arranged" fights(not like a gang war, stopping a thief, argument that becomes a fight, etc) that I think I saw. ²and gals.

Kimbo turned out to be one of the coolest dudes the UFC ever had. I was expecting him to be a lot more brash and cocky, but he wasn't at all. It was truly sad he died so soon

JDF was pretty vocal about wanting that fight. It would never happen for a number of reasons, but one is weight class. JDF fought as a smaller heavyweight. He wasn't ever getting down to 170lb.
I personally think if the bare knuckle fighting championship were around a lot sooner they would have signed Kimbo and would have been a better fit for him.

Cm Punk is the fighter of all time. He wore UFC fight gear, made his walkout, and was announced. Out of all the fights in ufc history, those two happened.

Gokhan Saki. He was one of K1 legends and one of the best kickboxers. Unfortunately his transition to MMA didnt work out well for him, won his first fight but knocked out first round in the second, by Rountree who was a below mediocre contender at that time. Bad to see him fail
Gokhan’s body had taken too much damage at that point. He’s realistically a middle weight who fought heavyweights his entire kickboxing career and was one of the top guys in K-1. His style just wasn’t a good match for mma. One of my favorite fighters, but should have stayed in kickboxing

That’s why he got clipped so much when he fought mma. The difference between him and Adesanya as kickboxers is guys like Adesanya never relied on the tight high guard for defense; he used his head movement and evasive footwork. The Dutch style of kickboxing doesn’t work well in mma because of the reliance on the high guard

That sort of striking is only going to work in MMA if you have the takedown defence to not worry about someone shooting under you mid combo. Watching him fight in kickboxing, then MMA and you can see the difference.
Dana loved Kimbo as a person. He didn't think he was anything special then he brought onto the ultimate fighters and saw the man he was and really respected him. Dana grew to respect and care for the man and was sad to see him pass.

Man the situation with Sage Northcutt was so fucked up. Why the hell would you take a kid who's a promising prospect and instead of building him up, like, you know, is normal practice, you just throw him into the professional ring from the get-go and completely destroy any chance of him developing into a high level fighter. Current champion's like Islam have been KO'd when initially transitioning to MMA while fighting complete nobodies. Sage was basically them throwing a teenager into the UFC ring with zero fight experience, and them being surprised when he got KO'd by dudes with some fighting experience.

I haven’t rewatched the first season of TUF since it originally aired but I’m pretty positive that Jason Thatcher lied and said he had several fights. I think he admitted it during the season that he hadn’t fought before but said he lied to get into the house.

Both were guys who spent their careers in combat-sports-adjacent industries who, in their mid to late 30's, said 'Hey, let me try my hand at the real thing, just to see if I can do it.' JDF took four amateur fights, won them all, then booked a pro fight, won it, and didn't fight again, having proven to himself he could it it. CM Punk took zero amateur fights and went straight to the UFC where he got destroyed. There was a right way to do what CM Punk wanted to do, and it didn't involve immediately entering the most prestigious MMA league on the planet.
