    Someone already said it in a previous comment, but Kimbo was absolutely a successful experiment. He had loads of internet hype behind and therefore the UFC gave him a shot. This ultimately proves that there's a gap between people who are percieved as tough on the streets and legitimately trained fighters.

    • @Showerofjyzz

      Agreed, also he brough in ratings

    • @drewpro81
      @drewpro81 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The segment on Kimbo says this exact statement that he himself was a success for the org. but not as a fighter. Sometime people just come along that people want to have a “what if” answered and he was epitome of this, once per decade, “what if” of the 2000-10 era.

    • @Okie1122
      @Okie1122 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Absolutely, and to be fair, he was a tough hard-nosed “street scrapper/brawler” and he was good at that, honestly if BKFC woulda been around at the time, he might’ve done much better there.
      Another thing.. he was already in his mid/upper 30s when he started, so his prime was on fumes, he was late to MMA yet had the courage to not only try it, stepped into the biggest organizations, UFC, Bellator, I think even EliteFC.
      God bless kimbo. 👊
      EDIT- I’ll NEVER forget being a teenager with my friends & watching Kimbo punch a guy SO hard that it knocked his eye out! -great memories

    • @MangaGamified
      @MangaGamified ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just an afterthought in retrospect, a different experiment was a success, as you said, there's a gap between trained fighters and tough guys on the street. It's really motivating for guys² that are not big or built big.
      Kimbo one of the first what I call "arranged" fights(not like a gang war, stopping a thief, argument that becomes a fight, etc) that I think I saw.
      ²and gals.

      @@drewpro81pretty much the same story with CM Punk. He was already an established name and brought a ton of fanfare with him. I just wish Punk would have tried MMA earlier, rather than waiting until he was 40. He was definitely dedicated to training and gave it his all. He might have actually done something if he'd started earlier.

    Gokhan Saki. He was one of K1 legends and one of the best kickboxers. Unfortunately his transition to MMA didnt work out well for him, won his first fight but knocked out first round in the second, by Rountree who was a below mediocre contender at that time. Bad to see him fail

    • @sbjames25
      @sbjames25 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Gokhan’s body had taken too much damage at that point. He’s realistically a middle weight who fought heavyweights his entire kickboxing career and was one of the top guys in K-1. His style just wasn’t a good match for mma. One of my favorite fighters, but should have stayed in kickboxing

    • @onelongwordable
      @onelongwordable ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @The Good Stuff he KO'd Saki before he went to Thailand so during that fight he was still just a power puncher

    • @sbjames25
      @sbjames25 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@onelongwordable if you’re aware of how Saki fights, you’ll know that he heavily relies on a tight high guard to defend punches, which is nonexistent with mma gloves. That’s why he got clipped so much when he fought mma. The difference between him and Adesanya as kickboxers is guys like Adesanya never relied on the tight high guard for defense; he used his head movement and evasive footwork. The Dutch style of kickboxing doesn’t work well in mma because of the reliance on the high guard

    • @TheNEOverse
      @TheNEOverse ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sbjames25 Saki also relies so much on combinations and classical dutch flurry into low kick. That sort of striking is only going to work in MMA if you have the takedown defence to not worry about someone shooting under you mid combo.
      Watching him fight in kickboxing, then MMA and you can see the difference.

      Current champion's like Islam have been KO'd when initially transitioning to MMA while fighting complete nobodies. Sage was basically them throwing a teenager into the UFC ring with zero fight experience, and them being surprised when he got KO'd by dudes with some fighting experience.

    Tony Halme actually took his own life in 2010. Possibly linked to his continued struggles with CTE.

    Imagine you had a nickle for every time there was a gimmick fighter named some variation of Tony that had to fight Randy Couture in their UFC debut.
    You'd have two nickles! Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.

    I haven’t rewatched the first season of TUF since it originally aired but I’m pretty positive that Jason Thatcher lied and said he had several fights. I think he admitted it during the season that he hadn’t fought before but said he lied to get into the house.

    Compare CM Punk and Jason David Frank (better known at Tommy the Green Ranger from Power Rangers). Both were guys who spent their careers in combat-sports-adjacent industries who, in their mid to late 30's, said 'Hey, let me try my hand at the real thing, just to see if I can do it.' JDF took four amateur fights, won them all, then booked a pro fight, won it, and didn't fight again, having proven to himself he could it it. CM Punk took zero amateur fights and went straight to the UFC where he got destroyed. There was a right way to do what CM Punk wanted to do, and it didn't involve immediately entering the most prestigious MMA league on the planet.
