Can You Move a Pool Table and Reuse Old Cloth???

  • I get asked all the time, "don't I have to replace the cloth when I have my table moved?"
Well, it isn't as cut and dry as either a "yes" or "no" answer. But, most of the time, the answer is "NO"! Generally speaking, any good technician should be able to reuse your cloth.
When moving a "staple down" table, there's no reason why a technician should damage the cloth. However, with a "glue down" you can reuse the cloth IF you can manage to get it off without ripping it.
Watch as I move a glue-down table and reuse the old cloth!

Would've beenso much better if the dude understood that you were making a video - why in the sam hill would he stand in front of the camera?? But I like your videos very much. You are the authority on tables man!

Incredible timing! I'm recovering a pool table this morning and have been wishing you had a video on gluing down cloth. I followed your instructions on replacing bumpers and so far so good. Now I just need to return my can of 3M 77 and pick up some 90. Thank you for your detailed videos! They have given me a lot of confidence in resurrecting a table that honestly was not that fun to play on.

Your videos are awesome and you are obviously great at what you do! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the DIY community. I have a question about reusing felt however. If it’s a bit dirty (basically just from age), can you run it through the washing machine on a gentle cycle with a gentle detergent and hang dry?

Recently bought what I think is a 'kit' / DIY pool table. It was already disassembled, and the cloth is toast. It is a 3-piece slate system; the slates are not backed, so the previous felt was glued down.
My question is...should I attempt to make backers and secure to the slates so I can staple new cloth, or should I leave as is, and glue down new cloth?
If gluing, is there a special cloth that is only for glue application, or can ANY cloth be either glued or stapled?
If there is a certain cloth for glue application, can you provide manufactures, brands, or links for glue down cloths? Thank you

If there is a possibility to put backers, always do so. Gluing down the cloth is easier but gives a less good result, even if you have more than 15 years experience like me

Do you have to use adhesive spray if reusing a cloth that is in great shape. I've seen vid's where it was just realigned with the holes and stapled and no adhesive was used. What is the risk?

Hi there mate, great video,l am doing this today ,so hope for a swift reply. The cloth l am reusing is the same type and was glued down. My thinking was to glue one side and then try to pull and stretch just on the other side, you did not do this. You only seemed to pull the ends a little bit ,so l am wondering whether it could be too loose. Also, the cloth I am using seems to only have half an inch stretch at best in it , which is hardly anything. Just a bit confused when all videos stretch like hell everywhere.

When you're reusing older cloth that's been stretched before (who knows how many times), it's good practice to only stretch it as far as it was previously. Cloth can become brittle and dry-rotted over time. So, really cranking down on old cloth is a good way of ripping it. Play it safe and only go back to where it was! It'll be tight enough.

@@CreativeRestorations thanks all went great, cloth only 11 months old like brand new. I needed to still stretch it in places. M3 77, worked like a charm. Thanks anyway.

It's just regular automotive Bondo brand Bondo. It's mixed with the accompanying hardener.

Hi Doug can you reuse a staple down cloth and then re staple it down?

    • @CreativeRestorations
      @CreativeRestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

If the cloth isn't too old, worn out, or dry-rotted, sure! I do it all the time.

It is possible, but the problem is it is difficult to get a good tension on the cloth. Like you can see in this video too, they almost didn't pull the cloth because there is no excess cloth to pull at. that's why many professionals will not reuse the cloth, since they are responsible for a good end result. But if you do it yourself, just try and see if you like the result, you can still opt for a new cloth later.
