- The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle is an American twin-engine, all-weather tactical fighter aircraft designed by McDonnell Douglas (now part of Boeing). Following reviews of proposals, the United States Air Force selected McDonnell Douglas's design in 1969 to meet the service's need for a dedicated air superiority fighter. The Eagle first flew in July 1972, and entered service in 1976. It is among the most successful modern fighters, with over 100 victories and no losses in aerial combat, with the majority of the kills by the Israeli Air Force.
The Eagle has been exported to Israel, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. The F-15 was originally envisioned as a pure air-superiority aircraft. Its design included a secondary ground-attack capability that was largely unused. The aircraft design proved flexible enough that an improved all-weather strike derivative, the F-15E Strike Eagle, was later developed, entered service in 1989 and has been exported to several nations. Several F-15 variants have been produced.
The F-15 can trace its origins to the early Vietnam War, when the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy fought each other over future tactical aircraft. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara was pressing for both services to use as many common aircraft as possible, even if performance compromises were involved. As part of this policy, the USAF and Navy had embarked on the TFX (F-111) program, aiming to deliver a medium-range interdiction aircraft for the Air Force that would also serve as a long-range interceptor aircraft for the Navy.
In January 1965, Secretary McNamara asked the Air Force to consider a new low-cost tactical fighter design for short-range roles and close air support to replace several types like the F-100 Super Sabre and various light bombers then in service. Several existing designs could fill this role; the Navy favored the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and LTV A-7 Corsair II, which were pure attack aircraft, while the Air Force was more interested in the Northrop F-5 fighter with a secondary attack capability. The A-4 and A-7 were more capable in the attack role, while the F-5 less so, but could defend itself. If the Air Force chose a pure attack design, maintaining air superiority would be a priority for a new airframe.

I flew the F-15C with the 43rd tfs, for just over 12 years. I absolutely love the airplane, and would confidently use it on today's battlefields. Armed with the high offset missiles it would be tough to beat, even for the F-22.
I miss it every day. It was a privilege to fly it.
Former Boeing here.... I was in St Louis leading Lean Manufacturing workshops around 1999-2000. Boeing bought McDonnell Douglas in 1997 and got lucrative military contracts in the deal. When I was at the plant, they were finishing the last (4) F-15's. Contract was over and the entire line was being shut down. They were also upgrading half dozen Harriers from A series to B series.
Most of work being done was on finishing first contract with Navy on the F/A 18 Super Hornets. 2nd contract stipulated a large cut in costs. Boeing sent in Lean experts (me included) from Everett Commercial to fix productions problems plaguing F/A 18's. We could build a 747 in a week, 400 seats, 200 windows, bathrooms, kitchens, etc. It was taking over 18 months to build a plane with 1 window, 2 seats, and could fit inside a twin aisle wide body jet. We did an incredible job and saved the Super Hornet. It is being phased out and replaced with F-35's.
I was sad to see end of F-15's as it was an incredible fighter. Years later, I learned the F-15 was being built again and it was even better than the old ones. Current F-15 EX is a formidable fighter jet that will be around for another 20 years. Today, state of the art in development is the F/A xx 6th generation stealth designed for Navy and Carrier operations. It will replace the F-35 C (carrier) jet currently being used.
F-35 has a limited range that hinders carrier operations in future. Threats from China requires carriers to stay back 1,000 miles. Current aircraft can't get there without refueling. F/A xx will be larger, carry more fuel, and capable of carrying all it's 'extra' munitions inside it's bomb bays. F-35C needs to carry 'extra' munitions on it's external hard points, defeating it's 'stealth' advantage.

Technically it still hasn't lost a dogfight. It has in simulated combat. I think with the new f-15. It would beat any 4th gen and 4.5 gen aircraft would still lose. American pilots are the best trained pilots in the world. The F-15EX is a monster. It can carry way more firepower.
@@codystout5353 2 Typhoons have smoked formations of 8 F15 on simulated combats. This feat has been performed by German Spanish and English typhoon. F22 can obviously do the same. Rafales would probably smoke the F15 too. Against a SU35 or other planes my bet is on the F15.
@@codystout5353 And one thing much people doesn't know is that advanced F15 like the E and the EX, are actually capable of speeds on excess of 3000 smh making it close enough to as fast as an MiG 31.
@@EduSanjuan777 the F-15 is my 2nd favorite jet aircraft of all time. I grew up a F-14 fan because of Top Gun. The F-22 is the most dominant aircraft in the sky. Not a whole lot of them in the picture. F-15s can do a lot of things. There is a whole lot of them to.
@@EduSanjuan777 I know but simulated combat and actual combat is a whole lot different. The us military goes in jamming radar and using stealth fighters to do cap missions. The F-15 and F-16 come in and mop up the rest of the bs.

The Mig25 might have been able to reach mach 3 but it melted it's engines everytime it did that so not really any faster than it's contemporary rivals if you wanted to fly it more than once
It was a bad ass plane,and speed is a weapon,able to blast off at high speed,I was USCG,and growing up in Alaska and serving there we saw lots of fighters like now im south of Oceana VA Beach VA and all there fighters,F-15 was bad ass

I flew the F-15C out of Elmendorf afb in Anchorage for most of my career. Alaska is right next door to Russia so we had a lot of head bumping with Russian fighters back then. While we were teetering on the edge of an international incident at all times I have to admit it was tremendously exciting. We coordinated with USCG frequently when Russian ships would encroach us waters. Thank you for your service.
In 1969 I was 9 and my uncle was home on leave on a holiday from Vietnam, he piloted the F4 phantom so I'm partial to that plane but this eagle is a finely tuned flying machine, and it's beautiful.

Good video, but you omitted the development of the F-15 EX as the final (we think) version currently being built.
The EX won't be the final iteration of the eagle. I would love to fly the ex because I can't imagine an F-15 with significantly MORE thrust. But there will be a stealth version, the design has too much potential to drop and we have learned better methods for stealth, that would not require as much modification to the airframe as formerly believed.
When was this recorded?... the last F-15 produced is currently being produced, the F-15EX..

Correction: at 7:33 you call the F-5 the "North American Aviation F-5" . The F-5 Was made by NORTHROP not North American.

Sustainable production and maintenance are key considerations. Stealth has fallen victim to the law of diminishing returns in this regard. "Quantity has a quality all it's own".
At one time, this concept was demonstrated with the F-15 STOL program.
Yes it can and if I am not mistaken the F - 15 EX will have it or at least 1 will be built as a test for it.
If TV is addedband works well, the F - 15 would he that much more awesome.
@@CONSOLETRUTH2with the benefit of hindsight, it's been revealed that, while the F15EX will not have thrust vectoring the new fly-by-wire controls will allow the airframe to perform manuvers that were previously only able to be performed by thrust vector capable aircraft.
Also, check, I believe, the Active Eagle. She was a NASA test craft and one of the studies for the F22 concept.

I don't buy the excuse about the F-5 . There must have been something else about the F-5 that the higher ups didn't like. I love the F-15,,, It's awesome. I'm just saying they could have put a more powerful engine in the F-5 and they would have had a real screamer.. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, JEREMY IN ALABAMA.
Easy, the F - 5 was built by Northrop/Grumman and though they won't admit it, the USAF/military in general were still pissed at NG for the b-49(? May not have been 49, I cant remember the actual number designation) and the huge cost overruns and missed deadlines for that bomber. In case you are not sure which one this is, it was the first ever flying wing concept that Jack Northrop (Northrop founder obviously)was obsessed with. The bomber was way, way, WAY ahead of its time and prived that, while technically feasable, an actual flying wing craft was impossible to fly reliably without any computer system which, due to it being the late 40s to early 50s, no military aircraft had any kind of computers integrated into the craft and since a flying wing needs thousands of minor corrections per second to be done to remain stable in flight, something impossible for a human to manage, 2 of the protorypes ended up crashing and killing pilots.
So, like I said, the USAF basically had ut in for NG due to the bomber program which basically wasted billions of dollars (in todays money) due to cost iverruns and the fact that it was way, wayz WAY behind schedule by the end.
Did Top Gun 2 ( Maverick ) intentionally play up or down the antiquated American fighter jets. It was set in current times wasn't it.
And if you can answer that which country provided the far more advanced 'enemy' fighters. China? Saudi Arabia? Russia? New Zealand?
To address the first point, do you mean the F-14? Because the F-18 Super Hornets flown are by no means antiquated. And secondly, bo country in particular was portrayed by name as the enemy in the moive, however it is extremely heavily hinted at being Russia given the 5th gen jets are Sukhoi Su-57s and the paint scheme looks very similiar (but not entirely) to Russian aircraft

Ok now that's there some aviation intelligence here can I ask 2 questions.
1. Why did the two sophisticated hi tech jets scrambled to take down Flight 77 en route to the Pentagon on 9/11, however, an old Hercules managed to 'tail' it?
2. Why has no one ever been able to replicate the flight path and manoeuvres of Flight 77? It descended from 35000 feet, feinted toward Washington, levelled out at 100metres above the ground and flew several 1kms before hitting a target on 5 stories high. And this was done on the amateur pilot's first attempt in a high stress level situation.
No experienced pilot has been able to achieve this in an aviation or Sim card simulator.
And please don't tell me they used the auto pilot.

Actually I'm sure they did use the autopilot. I have about 25,000 hours in heavy jets and I retired as captain from continental airlines. I flew the F-15C in my younger days.
You arm the autopilot and then "fly" the airplane by moving the heading and altitude bugs. It will maneuver fairly aggressively this way although some of the maneuvering was so aggressive that he obviously applied additional pressure on the yoke. If you do this hard enough the AP will disarm, so he would finish the maneuver then reengage the AP.
That's the only way a low time student with no heavy time could possibly have managed what he managed.

Depends on the pilot. The Russians certainly have been bested by opponents using their own planes. 6 months and couldn’t achieve air supremacy. The Americans secured the most heavily defended city in the Middle East in a month. I would be embarrassed to be part of the Russian command structure.
F-15 won't be able to compete with 5th gen fighters anymore.......
The Mig-25 could fly at Mach 3, but the engines would be completely destroyed when it did fly that fast. Most Mig-25’s were limited to Mach 2.5, which is the high, clean top speed of the F-15 Eagle. 1,875 mph.
Also Mig 25s were not very maneuverable compared to F15.
