The CRAZIEST F-15 variants ever proposed

  • Developed at the peak of the Cold War, the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle was designed to compete against a Soviet fighter American Defense officials believed was all but unbeatable. America’s Defense apparatus looked at the record-breaking speed and power of the emerging MiG-25 and let their imaginations run wild, but the aircraft they designed to defeat this nightmare of their own creation was somehow even wilder.
    But if you think the F-15s we got are crazy... wait until you hear about the ones we didn't get.

      It would've given it sub 1m^2 RCS. Definitely useful, but internal payload in the FAST packs (the f-15's conformal tanks) was very limited. So you'd still need to carry external ordinance to make it do most "F-15 stuff".
      Still, I am surprised that the F-15X, and especially EX, did not incorporate some Silent Eagle tech. Even with external ordinance, it's "somewhat helpful" (as seen in the Super Hornet, Rafale, and B-1B).
      It's still the F-1 5EX though ;)

      The FB-22 was a very good missed opportunity, IMO. If navalized, it would have been a great aerial refueling aircraft.
      I suppose the F-35 could easily do that job these days, if the current "stealthy drop tank" program for the F-35 can be modified slightly to carry aerial refueling equipment, but the extra capacity able to be carried (internally or externally) by the F-22 would be a welcome addition (because I can also see a further modification for the F-22 that replaces either the central or the outboard weapons bay(s) hardpoints for more fuel tanks, if you want to go all-in on the "turn it into an aerial refueling aircraft" route).

    Loved this video. Can't wait for the next one. I would recommend one on the 747 Air Force proposals like the CMC (cruise missile carrier) and the AAC (Airborne Aircraft Carrier). The idea for the last one could have relevance when you consider the Loyal Wingman concept. The threat axis alone would would be terrifying when you consider that there are very few bases available when going against China.

    • @44R0Ndin
      @44R0Ndin 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The single biggest problem with the CMC and AAC proposals for the 747 are that they use an existing commercial aircraft as the basis.
      Why is this a problem? Well, now you have the same problem the germans had with Q-ships during WWII, except that unlike the WWII Germans, you don't have the "just sink everything instead" option.
      In other words, the problem is that it's going to face international backlash because you're painting a bulls-eye on non-combatant aircraft because you can bet that the radar arrays for the SAM sites can't tell the difference between a military-use 747 and an airliner.

  • @Ilyak1986

    With the F-22, I know there was a concept for the FB-22 manta style jet, which turned the Raptor into a flying wing. I do wonder if that's what Lockheed wants to do for their NGAD design, though. The F-16 had the F-16 XL, but that was much more complicated for a fighter bomber than what the F-15E turned out to be (and which is still simpler, and far better managed, than the silly-looking Su-34).
    Always like to see new episodes from ya, Alex. Your work makes life that much better for this jet geek ^_^

    • @matthewnovak3095
      @matthewnovak3095 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’d put money that NGAD will pretty much be the FB-22, just without the vertical stabs. I’m wondering if they’ll get active flow control figured out by the time NGAD and
      F/AXX come out

    • @Ilyak1986
      @Ilyak1986 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@matthewnovak3095 just makes me wonder how a flying wing is supposed to be a good *fighter*. The FB-22 is a *bomber* type design.
      At some point, if the future is stealth vs. stealth, won't dogfights have a *higher* chance of breaking out?

    • @matthewnovak3095
      @matthewnovak3095 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Ilyak1986 I think at some point active flow control would allow for a more bomberish design to behave like a fighter. NGAD is also supposed to be a small run of fighters that gets replaced more often as well, so iterative design upgrades will probably come if fighters need to be able to maneuver like they used to. I think for the near future though, having greater range and a much more powerful radar, while being able to carry a good amount of ordinance internally is the path a lot of fighters will take.

    • @kathrynck
      @kathrynck 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Ilyak1986 Technically I'd describe the FB-22 as a Delta, not a flying wing. But much like the ill-fated F-16XL, it would have lost a lot of it's air combat maneuverability for that range & payload. "Tradeoffs".
      As for dogfights in a stealth v stealth arena... yeah. That's valid. Only problem is that 99.99% of the enthusiast circles (including quite a few pilots unfortunately) are stuck in a concept of dogfighting which is now obsolete. Missiles can pull anywhere from 30 to 60 G... something which would squish a pilot instantly.
      - In ye olden times (cold war) you had to paint a target with radar and wait for a missile to get a direct lock...
      - Then AMRAM (AIM-120A) came out, and you gained "fire & forget" capability... but you still had to paint your target to set up a launch.
      - Then the F-22 was being developed, and needed a way to fire AIM-120's while the missile itself could only see the inside of the weapon's bay. Ergo 'synthetic lock', which is kind of a crude-AI extra-safe "mad dog" mode. At the same time, HOBS (high off bore-sight) missile tech was blossoming (in both the US and Russia) for IR short range missiles.
      - It wasn't long before engineers realized HOBS could be taken much further. When the F-35 came out with 360 degree EOTS (note the 'T') and the AIM-120D with really advanced link-16 integration and now MADL integration... There's no safe place to be within missile range. Getting on a target's "6" doesn't mean you're winning anymore.
      Even with the 150 degrees or so of HOBS from AIM-9X/R-74M, the way dogfights actually play out is drastically altered. With 360 degrees on an AIM-120D... the whole thing is deconstructed. Two F-35's having close air combat with each other would just both be doing nonstop missile evasion, with little need of actually 'pointing' at each other. There's maneuvering involved, and it can be post-merge... But if you really want to call it "dogfighting" that's kinda a subjective call. I'd argue the missiles would be dogfighting, but the planes would just be evading.
      Basically, for an opponent, I'd rather have an F-16 behind me, than an F-35 in front of me. And I'd rather be in an F-35 than an F-22. That concept is still going right over the heads of many who learned their trade before this tech hit. You don't want to be anywhere within about 50 miles in front of, or 20 miles behind (energy losses doing that 180), an F-35.
      Dogfighting is dead. Missiles & sensor suites stole the job. People ask "when will we have dogfighting drones?" Well, we already _do_ it's called the AIM-120D. But you need a great sensor suite to fully leverage it. 'Fat Amy' fights really, _really_ dirty. And most people are still debating what the best 'sword' is, while she's got a 4(soon 6)-shot repeating rifle.
      Even at gen 4.5, the HOBS IR missiles make dogfighting incredibly messy.
