When visiting Hong Kong I was told I'd live comfortably just being a 'professional white guy' there if I wanted. Very weird.

It depends. I've family that took expat jobs there for 8 years. "Professional white guy" did exist to an extent, but it really meant "white + model + spokesman". The job was to (falsely) convince other companies that your employer had a tie-in to major Western markets. Finally it wouldn't be Hong Kong. HK is full of Brit wank expats. That was a mainland thing.
