It was because the announcer’s were talking about how it was a 2 strike pitch and if it had in fact hit his bat and then was fouled into Salvy’s glove it would have been an out.

@@stephenstrang590 if the ball also hit his hand, it wouldn't be a foul tip so he wouldn't be out. If the ball does not hit his hand, it's a strike. Jomboy says it's a 2 2 count so he would be out.

@@michaelg207 Can't tell by this video, but if it did hit the bat first, then the hand, it would be a dead ball foul ball only. If it just hit the hand, it is a dead ball hit by pitch. Just the bat, foul tip strike 3. I've watched this many times, cannot tell for sure what or if the ball hit anything, and in the end, whatever Angel called, they had to go with.
Hernandez legitimately looks like he cut up his wife's undershirt 10 minutes before the game to use as a mask because he forgot his in the car and didn't have time to run out there

The one thing Angel routinely gets right (no cap) is balk calls. If he was as good at other calls as he was with balks, he'd be one hell of an umpire.
I've seen far more egregious balks not get called than that. Hernandez was being an asshole, as per usual.
It's amazing how some officials are so good with the minute details of some rules but absolutely horrible at the basic ones.

I think Angel is literally just testing to see how awful he can be before the union can't protect him anymore. He already knows he's the worst ever, but he's gonna make sure he's remembered forever.
But is any of what happened here Angel's fault? That HBP call was wrong butit wasn't an easy call and replay should fix that. I don't blame him for missing a close one. And the balk was the correct call

The fact that Matheny took an analytics class to get himself up to speed with todays game shows how dedicated he is. Great guy, and I hope he leds the Royals to some pennants
Matheny is an idiot. Watched him up close in St. Louis. Can’t believe he was hired here after years of managing little league and spending time in the broadcast booth. No, catchers are not the smartest guys in the room. Case in point. Why would he wait until game six in 2013 to decide to pitch around David Ortiz. Think he was hitting around .730 at the. No analytics class in the world would help you with that if you can’t figure out that for yourself.
He was known here for misusing his bench and bullpen to the extent he would be out of arms and bats in the ninth so would have to let his closer bat for himself. Happened way too many times to count. Would double switch out his cleanup hitter in he sixth inning of a close game. Really. He may or may not be a great guy. Don’t need that to be successful as a manager. Just know her game. This guy doesn’t. St the end here he was tuning out Yadi. Good play MM.

Yeah but as a player watching the ump get calls wrong for the other team while getting them right for your team, especially in such quick succession and even more so with the runs scored by those calls is deeply frustrating. It eliminates any confidence you have that the game is being called fairly, and rightly so.

Watching jomboy clips got me back into watching baseball
I'm reminded of a Jays game a couple years ago where Will Little tossed Jon Gibbons for complaining about a call without him even leaving the dugout, then two pitches later he tossed Marcus Stroman for no obvious reason and immediately tossed Russell Martin for questioning it. Hernandez was the 3B umpire for that, and I remember that because he was behind home for the next game and there was one point in that one where he was *very clearly* trying to bait J.A. Happ into giving him an excuse to toss him.
"Out" theoretically could have been an option on that play. If it's a 2-2 pitch and it hit the knob of the bat and was caught by Perez, it could have been a caught foul tip strike 3, right?
