Prog metal is a hit-or-miss genre for me. I like the famous ones like Opeth, Enslaved, Mastodon etc but most of the bands are more about their musicianship than actual songwriting. (ehm, Dream Theater). On the other hand I think 70s prog rock like Genesis, Floyd, Yes, Camel etc are the peak of music
Have you checked out Vektor? Specifically the songs Collapse and Recharging the Void, think 70's prog and technical thrash metal with a space/sci-fi theme. Recharging is the best song I've ever heard.
Cool you put Tesseract and The Contortionist higher up! Should definitely check out more Persefone (pronounced Persephone). The modern instrumental prog stuff is not for everyone but I love it all, Animals as Leaders, Scale the Summit, Plini, Intervals, Polyphia, so good
S: Trivium, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Dream Theater, Periphery, Agalloch (all in my top ten favorite bands of all time) A: BTBAM, Haken, Rivers of Nihil, Obscura B: Persefone, TesseracT C: Fallujah, Mastodon, Animals as Leaders, Meshuggah D: Gojira, Tool (lots of moments I like, lots of moments I dislike, overall not for me) I haven't heard much from the other bands.
I'd give Job for a Cowboy's suneater album a try if you haven't. The band is not deathcore anymore and now they're a really good progy tech death band with a new album coming out next year
I clocked your Cellar Darling t-shirt right away, and immeditately thought 'I'm going to like this guy'. Glad to see Haken riding high - I would've personally put them in 'S' tier, though, and remember - it's Haken like Bacon.
It always surprised me you didn’t like Pain of Salvation. I agree Panther isn’t a good place to start, it’s one of their weaker efforts imo. They have such an interesting discography, I’d begin with The Perfect Element, Remedy Lane, and In the Passing Light of Day. That last one is probably a top five album for me overall. They have a couple albums I don’t like but overall I really enjoy them, and Daniel Gildenlow is one of my favorite vocalists in the genre.
What do you think of Orphaned Land? I only have one of their recent albums but enjoy it every listen. Good t-shirt by the way, Cellar Darling are magnificent.
The Mantle is far more post-metal with a lot of progressive folk in there, the only bm in there is the vocals.Edit - in my opinion (sorry I was in a rush typing and it read super rude)
@@fabril2673 that's that better tech death. Oscura, Archspire etc. all sound the same and are just technical for the sake of being technical. Heck, even Athiest and Death are better than most of the bands on the list.
Pain of Salvation is a band too Pop/Soft for Prog/Metal scene, but too Prog/Metal for Mainstream Rock. They're like "Foo Fighters meets Dream Theater".Poor thing, I still love them.
If you like progressive metalcore, and your issue with Animals as Leaders is that they don't have any vocals, their guitarist Tosin Abasi was in a band before Animals as Leaders, and their music absolutely SLAYS. The band is called Reflux, and they only released one album called "The Illusion of Democracy" (which they toured on for a couple years, oftentimes supporting perhaps their chief benefactor, Devin Townsend, who maintains a love of Tosin Abasi's music to this day - it was on this tour that I first saw Tosin play, and I then met the man after the show to shake his hand and wish him luck, because you could tell he was going places). It's a bit political (as the title would suggest), but it was because of this extended album tour that Tosin got offered an opportunity to create a solo album by a rep from Prosthetic Records (an offer he declined/postponed, until he had furthered his musical education, both in terms of his understanding of music, and his skill level on his instrument - after a year of formal study, he contacted Prosthetic, confirmed that the record deal was still on the table, and began Animals as Leaders as the solo project*)...and the label employee who made the offer knew what he was doing. Reflux was all hard edges and potential, totally chaotic and amazing. Compositionally and stylistically, it bears no resemblance to Animals as Leaders, but the progressive ambitions and technical wizardry are both there in spades. Also (just as an interesting aside), Reflux's singer Ash Avildsen is the founder and CEO of notable record label Sumerian Records, which has a bunch of great bands currently on their roster, including BtBaM, Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya and Animals as Leaders. His vocals were pretty decent (like, he might have been the least talented member of the band, but only because his band-mates were THAT extraordinary), but I guess he decided to devote himself to another part of the music business, and has had his greatest success in doing so. *It only became a full-fledged band a couple years later.
Yeah music that completely disregards the song writing aspect frustrates me, you can be the most technical band in the world but it's all meaningless to me without songwriting as the priority.
I knew of them and saw them supporting Obscura last year, the song 'Stillness In Time' is really something. I also can't believe Andorra has a metal band haha

Maudlin of The Well, Kayo Dot, Disillusion, Cynic, Tool have great stuff too.
Excellent name drops. The disrespect Enslaved gets year after year is insanity. Their run from late 90s to about 2012 rivals any band.
Very good video, I would put bands such as Opeth, Gojira, Enslaved, DT, Death, Mastodon, Agalloch and Emperor as S, at least for me.
Focus by Cynic has got to be my second favourite album, it still sounds like it's from way in the future.

Where’s Death’s Symbolic?
Opeth atop all. I am pleased🧙♂

Ruination and genesis are great albums tecnical death with a death core touch 🔥
pretty sure none of their albums are actual deathcore except for the first EP. Can't wait for Moon Healer to come out though
Some great ones on there. I'd add: Beyond Creation, Alkaloid, Gorod, early Tribulation (Formulas old school proggy classic) and Morbus Chron/Sweven.

you're good man you're clearly more respectful than 99% of metal fans lol
A good album that you need to check out is the Medieval Death LP + DVD, well....given your taste in music you should.
Opeth is life. And pizza.
Agalloch definitely S Tier for me. Pale Folklore is my favorite album from them. Also S tier bands would be opeth/dream theater/gojira
My 2 favourite metal genres!! This should be good😮😮
Questy, can we have a list of bands similar to Opeth, in your opinion? 😊
I expected a couple of technical-brutal death metal bands like Dying Fetus, Nile, Suffocation...or are they not considered Tech Death anymore?
All three would be high if the creator put them on. They’re more the bands I enjoy from that style
That’s brutal death, they are kinda technical, sure, but they have nothing to do with prog or bands like Obscura
@@fabril2673 that's that better tech death. Oscura, Archspire etc. all sound the same and are just technical for the sake of being technical. Heck, even Athiest and Death are better than most of the bands on the list.

Can't stand Therion but love their side project Luciferian Light Orchestra. If you like occult rock it's worth checking out

Check out latest Job for a Cowboy album. Fantastic prog! I was also surprised
Agalloch is very prog but my definition of prog is not wanking your instruments for 20 minutes
Yeah music that completely disregards the song writing aspect frustrates me, you can be the most technical band in the world but it's all meaningless to me without songwriting as the priority.
Fallujah is S tier material for sure.
Questy listen to some Persefone!!’ Shin-Ken, Spiritual Migration, Aatma and Metanoia are really good albums
I knew of them and saw them supporting Obscura last year, the song 'Stillness In Time' is really something. I also can't believe Andorra has a metal band haha
Animals As Leaders is the pinnacle of progressive instrumental metal music. They are the main figures of prog these days, they deserve S+.
Besides skipping the fact that the band has two of the most skilled musicians in metal nowadays.
What is the difference between Progressive and Technical?🤔
More love to pain of salvation please
Why is Trivium on here?
agreed they're mostly metalcore-thrash but they do have a lot of proggy parts over the discog especially in the newer ones with Bent on drums
