Alternative Metal is a a subgenre of Metal that is influenced by Alternative Rock so that means any Metal band with a Alt Rock leaning is Alt Metal, you listed a few subgenres of Alt Rock particularly Grunge, and Post-Grunge which could have just simply put in with Alt Metal because bands that fuse alt rock and its subgenres with Metal and also Nu Metal, Rap Metal, and Funk Metal are subgenres of Alt Metal
I respect your judgement far more than that of Mike the Music Snob or the like. Edit: No wait, you put my favorite genre in C-tier. You are clearly nitpicking and biased.
Mike's judgment is entirely reasonable as he's just telling you what he thinks of each genre. This guy is doing the same thing, he's just more metal centric and can appreciate genre's with intentionally bad production quality and lazy composition, which is perfectly fine.
Bout time someone said it. Alt and Nu Metal get confused cause they got popular at the same time and bands having a lot of crossover between the two but when people bring them up what they usually mean is just “edgy 00s music to play over crusty Dragon Ball footage”
YES EXACTLY. This has been one of those things that have bothered me for so long that to a point lost my understanding of metal or nu metal as a whole. But thank god now someone was able to make out the differences between Alt, Nu metal and 2000s edgy Hard rock
I started this video assuming the genres would be done alphabetically and not in descending order of quality, so seeing 8 S-tiers in a row made me think this was some late April Fools gag where every genre is perfect.
I think brutal death metal's appeal is the fact that its sheer brutality is able to effectively convey those feelings of pure rage and hatred. I love Suffocation, Cryptopsy, and Mortician because they convey those feelings so well. Still, I understand why it's not more highly rated. I also think post-metal deserves a higher rating. Bands like Isis, Jesu, Alcest, and Rosetta show just how much you can do with that genre. Still, I respect your opinions and I think that overall this list is fantastic. You've definitely got one of the best metal channels out there.
Awesome video! I completely agree with Prog and Sludge being S tier. Those are my two favorite subgenres. But I'm surprised you don't like post-metal all that much; I always saw it as a combination of the two. And also, Blue Stahli is kinda in the vein of the Metalstep you mentioned
Woo! Glad Sludge metal made it to S-tier. It is a genre that represents the south of Louisiana/Georgia much like Grunge is part of the Seattle scene. It is the only music genre where it is both putrid, hypnotic, sexy and funky all at once, and there're VERY few bad artists that ever partook the style. Shout out to my favs: Kylesa, Acid Bath, Torche, Cavity, Buzz*en Iron Monkey, High on Fire, Dystopia, Crowbar, Celeste, and The Angelic Process yo!
I don't understand how one can give sludge metal an S tier and then put post-metal in C tier. Bands like Neurosis and ISIS alone prove that genre is A+ tier.
I agree with most of these takes (Prog for life!), but I actually like funeral doom, stoner rock/doom and post metal. Something about the repetitiveness and longer songs just has a different vibe that I personally like. Not for everyone, I completely get that, but it definitely has its merit. I 100% agree with your opinions of slam and brutal death, the idea of slam is cool maybe for a one off segment of a song, but it all blends together otherwise.
Personally I think kawaii Metal deserves to be put in at least B tier, or even A tier, but a lot of people tend to dislike the sound of "anime" singing in metal as proven by the D tier.
I think a new genre that has emerged from the last couple of decades that has stayed trve but innovative that goes unnoticed is what ive heard to be called voidgaze. This is the sound of dissonant, unsettling, atmospheric, extreme metal with emphasis on timbre and texture to create darkness, chaos, and wonder. Bands like Portal, Deathspell Omega, Gorguts, Ulcerate. I think these bands being lumped into "experimental" or "avant garde" is a disservice to the distinct sound they create. I think it deserves its own genre. There are plenty of bands now who delve into this particular sound to qualify it.
I know its probably just semantics, but the label "dissonant death metal" doesn't quite fit imo. Deathspell omega is far enough removed from death metal. And dissonance is found in lots of metal genres. The genre I'm talking about is defined by a mix of black and death with a particular unique approach of disharmony to create atmosphere. I guess I'm just not a fan of the label "dissonant death". Its more than that.
@@PorscheJonThough the thing is, dissonant death metal has a lot of overlap with black metal, and many of the dissonant death metal bands have black metal influence. So naturally, the combination of the genres is natural
You, my friend, are a very enlightened metal head. Firstly having 75 whole metal sub-genres is absolutely insane in and of itself. Secondly your rankings are extremely top heavy(as in a lot more S and A ranks than D and F) which means you're very open minded to the entire metal spectrum, from the light edge(living on the space between rock and metal) to the heavy edge(as in the most extreme genres to the point where they become utterly unintelligible). Since you did include some very out there barely metal genres I'm surprised you didn't include any of the noise ones, as to me they aren't all that different from say Avant Garde metal, Drone metal, etc, conceptually I mean, arguably their precursor in fact or at the very least a heavy influence of. Don't get me wrong, this list is already extremely long and some of the sub-genres mentioned are already incredibly tough to distinguish from similar ones(like tech death vs prog death for example or brutal death vs all the other death sub-genres, which you struggled defining yourself in this video), however the noise archetype is actually a pretty old one, actually started in the 80s IIRC in Japan, and was well ahead of its time. Since than it grew significantly and the American and European versions of it are quite different from the original Japanese flavor. In any case, the various metal related, noise sub-sub-genres seem right at home with some of the sub-sub-genres you did include and at this point it's a big enough movement that I feel should be talked about more. Especially in such a comprehensive discussion of absolutely everything metal and metal adjacent.
Great video! Interesting to see so much variety of Metal covered. I would say that the most glaring omission here is USPM/US Power Metal. I watched your "Heavy Metal" video too and feel like restricting that term to the NWOBHM movement misses out on a lot of music that developed since - especially in the US. There is a HUGE amount of Metal that sits somewhere in between the NWOBHM-ish sound and the excesses of fully-fledged (especially Euro) Power Metal.
Awesome video and a really based list. I like that you express your opinions which have a lot of interesting takes (which I also happen to agree with) instead of making another goy slop tier-list video that yt is filled to the brim with by reading basic information about each genre and saying what everybody (me) already knows. Must be my favourite metal-related channel really
I have to concur with all the people saying death-doom deserved to be included. Imo it's undoubtedly distinct from the rest of doom metal - trad doom, stoner doom and epic doom (at least Candlemass) still sound as one genre.
It’s definitely one of those sub genres where people who like post-rock, mathrock, blues, and Jazz will appreciate it more, as there use to the long repetitive side. But it’s totally understandable if people dislike it as it’s not for everyone, especially when they exceed over six minutes haha 🤠
Funny to see how tastes can be so different. I'd essentially swap most melodic stuff with the more simplistic/punk inspired genres and you'd have my list.
@@hk-4738 don't really listen to all that much post metal aside from agalloch (I didn't even think they were primarily a post metal band to be honest), I do quite like ISIS though. But I agreed with most of the placements it's just a few genres here and there I disagree with and I was making a bit of a joke out of it lol
Beatdown for me is best when you go to shows, shits just fun and from my experience everyones usually cool asf, i get why it comes off as "tryhardy" but thats just apart of the culture, and that ignorance and violence is what makes it fun, guess its not everyones preferred sound tho, other than your take on grindcore and beatdown i fw the rest of the list, good shit bro keep up the content
You literally put all my favorite genres in the lower tiers but I still respect your opinion, even if you almost made me cry when you said mid as agalloch was playing in the background
I knew there would be someone like this. It would likely rank higher on a rock tierlist. I bet Razorfist would have a stroke if he saw my C tier picks.
Great assessment. I am a fan of Stoner Doom, but I also get why people don't like it. However I disagree on Post Metal. It's not mid-tier. I would argue, based on Neurosis: Through Silver and Blood alone, it's at least A tier if not S. It's a genre that requires time and space and I don't think that should be counted against it. Are we basing these tiers on how many plays it gets or on the quality of the experience upon listening? I also disagree with your assessment of Cross Over Thrash. It is one of the few genres that keeps 80's metal alive. And, Rocky George is my favorite guitarist. He integrated stunning solos into every song seamlessly. No one else could do what he did. And the riffs were perfectly part of each song as a whole. Brilliant.
I would say the key in difference between our taste is I'm more instrument focused and love super long songs. Yeah, Funeral Doom. Next, I will defend the undefendable. I actually love Drone metal. Let me explain before everyone questions my sanity. It is good background for when I am reading with a low distraction nature. More importantly, it puts me to sleep and not in a bad way. When insomnia hits hard, the best thing I can do is turn on a long Drone Metal album. It beats any rain, wind, crickets or other natural ambient. If the fan is not enough, the drone metal comes to the rescue.
Trance basically being an anime as hell take on power metal and melodic metalcore both of which I like is the sole reason I enjoy it as dorky as that sounds. It’s like video game metal from like a final fantasy game
I used to really love Electronicore and bands adjacent to it back in highschool since they were a great way to make friends with girls. But listening back to those albums- lyric wise they really did not age well. At least Glam Metal can be enjoyed on the radio. A sober reminder that my teen self didn't have the "best taste" in metal 😂
First time on the channel. Always enjoy hearing others opinions on metal genres and personally hope to find something new. Like you I'm not a big power metal guy, but you should give Beast in Black a try, especially their album "Berserker". They slay.
Ah, genres are fun. I tend to view bands individually before I judge them off of what genre they appear to be. Given how much preference correlates with enjoyment, I tend to write bands off more as 'eh, not for me' rather than bad... unless they are really objectively bad 🤣 But ultimately, since my tastes drift over time, experiencing new music through genres you enjoy is a cool way to do it. Metal-n-roll was my intro to metal. Specifically Metallica (Reload - what a way to start...oof!). From there I listened to thrash (earlier metallica), and alt / nu metal / industrial / grunge since it was all over the radio / MTV back then. In those days I'd peruse Tower Records and just buy cds with my summer job money off of album art. It was a really random way to experience metal genres. I'd end up with Type O, Six Feet Under, Cradle of Filth and Foo Fighters in the same purchasing spree. I had a friend in high school who would lend me Iron Maiden cds and that got me into heavy metal and NWOBHM (and maybe a smidge of glam). At one point I bought JP painkiller on a whim...and that got me instantly hooked. One helluva cd. NWOBHM got me into both power metal (Blind Guardian and Angra) and melodeath (In Flames...Jester Race and Amorphis). I also started branching out more and some of the cross over genres were very intriguing like death-doom (paradise lost). From there it was prog, folk and symphonic metal (symphonic death is sweet). More recently a bout of djent / instrumental prog and my most recent guilty binge... tech death. I especially love the melodic or proggy stuff 😁 It feels weird skipping major genres along the way (groove, sludge, black, old-school death, etc), but I know I'll get sucked into those one way or another through a crossover style (melodic black, etc). Despite really loving power metal (also...probably my wife's favorite metal genre), I agree with how you would rank it off of sampling random songs from the genre. As someone who's listened to it for ~25 years now, I feel like there's a couple different flavors. Early european style power metal bands (blind guardian, stratovarius, helloween/gamma ray, etc), some american style stuff like Manowar that seems to have come out of speed metal (?), and then a later wave of euro style that puts a lot of emphasis on technical guitar work (perhaps at the expense of songwriting). I'd say that last stuff came straight out of broad audiences getting spoon fed it through guitar hero (ugh, it's pretty bad!). There's probably a bit of a resurgence of more classic power metal mixed with more modern styles, but it can be hit or miss. Some of it can be really good like recent albums from Unleash the Archers (apex / abyss). But, sometimes just adding cheesy orchestral stuff over bland power metal makes it more gag inducing 😂
If you’d separate Euro power metal from US power metal, I’d bet EUPM would be A tier. EUPM is more melodic and proggy than USPM (which is closer to Thrash). Essentially EUPM is the goodness of melodeath without the harsh vocals. Good examples are Kamelot, Orden Ogan and Brothers of Metal.
Good video like always. You need to get into jazz metal. It's more than just prog or thecnical jazz influenced bands. From fusion to modern death metal, to avant guard to death and roll, black to djent. Also the other way, jazz influenced by metal. You like proggy theory heavy and melodic stuff, you'll love jazz metal.
Excellent video, I totally agree with your take on crossover thrash. Many people love it, and that's okay, but crossover fans also expect regular thrash listeners to like crossover, and it's annoying, it's repetitive and boring. I also take it that you're not a big fan of punk/hardcore, and neither am I. The rankings I disagree with the most are regular black metal and avant-garde metal. The former is a classic, and while monotonous at times, it's pretty consistent and versatile, I think it deserved A tier. On the other hand, avant-garde metal is trickier because it can be either superb and refreshing or horrible and pretentious depending on the artist, good examples of excellent avant-garde are Arcturus and Thy Catafalque, I get it's not for most people, but a C tier would've been fairer. Anyway, I really enjoyed the ranking and your opinions about each genre.
I feel like grindcore gets such a bad reputation because of the short song gag. It's such a unique genre that imo can produce some of the best sounds in metal. Take any album,ep,split etc. from plutocracy for example or even the more metal leaning bands like insect warfare or nasum. The music that homies like this put together is definitely more than just "lol short song" The list was entertaining and well put together, just had to defend my boy grindcore 🙏🙏🙏
I loved this tier list of yours but it kinda sucks that you didn't vibe with crossover trash. I respect most of your takes tbh but I always enjoyed the party thrash and campy ascetic of this fusion genre. My favorite bands from this genre have always been Austrian Death Machine, Municipal Waste and Gwar.
BDM is my fav and I like it because of how it grooves. I find that the genre was at is absolute best from 93-06. From when it found its footing, to when it went a bit stale. BDM has everything that Slam & Deathcore has to offer, and more. Its the fully formed version of the two. The way deathcore songs are structured just makes no sense. spending an entire song building up to just one or two breakdowns is just silly, but BDM on the other hand, offers a series of riffs that flow perfectly one after the other and then out of nowhere you're just hit in the face with a crazy slam or breakdown, and there's a bunch of bands will do this 3-5 times in every song. Not just once or twice. And they don't linger on super slow notes forever like deathcore does. Its always 10-45 seconds of groovy mid tempo breakdown / slam at a time. You might think of it as a muddled amalgamation of various styles, but once you identify the core formula in all of it, you'll see how sensible the genre is. Almost everything is serving the feel song. A better name for BDM would've been GrooveDeath, following the same naming convention as MeloDeath, TechDeath, DissoDeath ect, Because thats what the genre is centred around when it comes to the guitar and drums.
You seem to have very similar tastes and preferences for metal music as I do, therefore video good. Also there's at least two of us still listenening to the metalgaze stuff like Deafheaven, Alcest, and Lantlos. I love that stuff.
Personally, doom metal is 100% S Tier. It is a varied genre, most artists make good music, and it is a perfect gateway genre. It can combine with like every other genre perfectly. I agree with your epic doom placement. Stoner metal, another one of my favorites, deserves A Tier simply because it’s not as varied and is very repetitive, but can be a good gateway and has good variation with awesome bands and songs. Note that yeah Im kind of combining Stoner doom and Stoner rock for this. Personally I also believe Southern Metal deserves A Tier because… idk… I really love Corrosion of Conformity. Also personally Grunge is not a genre, more of just a movement.
Missed a few obvious ones Symphonic black metal = dimmu borgir Symphonic death metal=fleshgod apocalypse Gloom metal = katatonia Extreme metal = carcass Deathgrind = cattle decapitation Melodeath folk metal (melofolk) = ensiferum Melodic deathcore = all shall perish Slamming deathcore (slamcore) = ingested Blackened melodic death metal = dissection Death/brutal metalcore = dead to fall Death/brutal hardcore = the acacia strain
Acacia Strain is Downtempo Deathcore. I even used one of their songs. Nice list, although most of these are hybrid genres. I have never heard of Gloom Metal. Interesting...
Ingested isnt really deathcore, its more slam death. They have a few songs that can be considered as deathcore and from deathcore they are a great introduction to brutal death metal but slamcore is waking the cadaver or acrania
Occulturation, you're not alone with the Mathcore love, I also do love, mainly Converge and, you guess it, Dillinger Escape Plan... Well that being said, i just didn't agreed with ALOT of picks here... Mainly Crossover Thrash, grindcore and Brutal Death Metal. Bro i love these genres 😭 (I'm not joking but also not trying to be serious bc i am definitely not the guy to hate on an vid because an fav genre of mine is down on the list because of some reason, mainly bc i loved the vid, mainly the jokes 😎👍). Edit: just noticed how much I used because and mainly in this comment bruv
27:01 What do you mean there aren't a lot of Albums about the Epic Feats of Celtic Gods and Warrior adventures praising their divinity and achievements?
Pretty solid video but it’d be cool if you could somehow reupload with edits some of the videos you mentioned that you made so your series would be complete
I would have put stoner doom, crossover, speed, and Heavy metal in S tier, and put prog, Melodic metalcore, metal'n'roll, and alternative in C tier and then swap melodic and old school death metal.

@@jaydeem1264 Thank you I fixed it. Typo

Bloody glowies stop following me around!
Bye, Bye. I win

incelcore being metioned right after hyperpop is the funniest shit i have ever seen
Dude, I just wanna give props to how articulate, agreeable, thoughtful, well-edited, and educating this huge video was. Good job!
A tier is truly the coolest tier
DEATH DOOM IS INTEGRAL
And brutal doom
I think brutal death metal's appeal is the fact that its sheer brutality is able to effectively convey those feelings of pure rage and hatred. I love Suffocation, Cryptopsy, and Mortician because they convey those feelings so well. Still, I understand why it's not more highly rated. I also think post-metal deserves a higher rating. Bands like Isis, Jesu, Alcest, and Rosetta show just how much you can do with that genre.
Still, I respect your opinions and I think that overall this list is fantastic. You've definitely got one of the best metal channels out there.
Pathology and Deeds of flesh even Origin
"the greatest trick the Devil ever told was convincing the world he doesn't exist..."
i skipped into the middle of the video and thought you were giving everything a c tier out of joke
I would say Sludge also has strong roots in Seattle. Alice In Chains is primarily Sludge Metal.
I don't understand how one can give sludge metal an S tier and then put post-metal in C tier. Bands like Neurosis and ISIS alone prove that genre is A+ tier.
Rwake is also sludge if Mastadon counts....EYEHATEGOD ANYONE?
@@soonerproud eh no not really a better example for sludge in seattle is probably the Melvins (technically Montesano but close enough)
Any good Georgian sludge bands?
Maybe just being old, but it's wild how Danzig isn't included in the Metal n Roll conversation. First 3 albums were essential in the 90s
For sure. One of the greats
No slamming brutal blackened thrash infused grind core ? Hmmnnn weird choice
Didn't you get schooled enough on being facetious about metal subgenres by the video
Agree
Good stuff, very much enjoyed it. 👍👍 would love to see you cover bands individually
The joke at 34:03 is so fucking dumb and yet it genuinely made me laugh out loud
Solid B tier, maybe even A tier
Brutal death metal got done dirty cut my bois some slack

This isn’t a definitive source or anything but I think RateYourMusic’s genres page is probably the most accurate list of all metal genres.
Always love your videos, hope you are blessed by the algorithm on this one
What what the FUCK did he say about power metal???
Personally I think kawaii Metal deserves to be put in at least B tier, or even A tier, but a lot of people tend to dislike the sound of "anime" singing in metal as proven by the D tier.
Unfortunatly.
I fucking love slam man. Despite the bad production or redundancy of it, to me it’s at least a B tier genre.
I've heard it called Dissonant Death Metal. That is a genre I suppose I missed.
Awesome you put melodic death metal and my favorite sungenre melodic metalcore in S tier lets go! Awesome video as always
Great list brother, keep on the good content

Hell yeah, this is gonna be a banger!

One of the best metal channels honestly
Will Power Metal still get it's own dedicated video?
He gave c to power metal!
@@leventadam He gave Trap Metal a D and made a dedicated video on it. What's your point...?
Awesome video and a really based list. I like that you express your opinions which have a lot of interesting takes (which I also happen to agree with) instead of making another goy slop tier-list video that yt is filled to the brim with by reading basic information about each genre and saying what everybody (me) already knows. Must be my favourite metal-related channel really
I am asking once again for a folk metal video! I feel like folk metal doesn’t get much love.
I have to concur with all the people saying death-doom deserved to be included. Imo it's undoubtedly distinct from the rest of doom metal - trad doom, stoner doom and epic doom (at least Candlemass) still sound as one genre.
Stoner Doom only being a C-Tier is a bold opinion, i respect it. Although, i think genre absolutely slaps.
Yes i like Stoner Doom no I am not bold, but yes I am bald 👍
It’s definitely one of those sub genres where people who like post-rock, mathrock, blues, and Jazz will appreciate it more, as there use to the long repetitive side. But it’s totally understandable if people dislike it as it’s not for everyone, especially when they exceed over six minutes haha 🤠
I don't know how well does The Browning fit electronicore, but give them a listen
Funny to see how tastes can be so different. I'd essentially swap most melodic stuff with the more simplistic/punk inspired genres and you'd have my list.

You literally put all my favorite genres in the lower tiers but I still respect your opinion, even if you almost made me cry when you said mid as agalloch was playing in the background
Man that lucifer song was a breath of fresh air. Calm sure but still good
The Enigma TNG has a lot of original metal step. And it's awesome.
Cant lie if i say that i didnt get little mad when you put glam metal at mid, its absolute SSS tier 😎😎🤟🏻🤟🏻
Fantastic video as always.
Unrelated but I have been on a huge Black Dahlia Murder kick (again)
Trance basically being an anime as hell take on power metal and melodic metalcore both of which I like is the sole reason I enjoy it as dorky as that sounds. It’s like video game metal from like a final fantasy game
super solid tierlist the first 20ish minutes
But blackened death metal is like an actual defined genre
I used to really love Electronicore and bands adjacent to it back in highschool since they were a great way to make friends with girls.
But listening back to those albums- lyric wise they really did not age well. At least Glam Metal can be enjoyed on the radio. A sober reminder that my teen self didn't have the "best taste" in metal 😂
First time on the channel. Always enjoy hearing others opinions on metal genres and personally hope to find something new.
Like you I'm not a big power metal guy, but you should give Beast in Black a try, especially their album "Berserker". They slay.
My wife puts Post-Grunge in S tier, she loves that shit.
I do too Nickelback is one of the best live bands I've ever seen...twice and I've seen the best tech death bands live
I like it too but most fans are women yeah
More recently a bout of djent / instrumental prog and my most recent guilty binge... tech death. I especially love the melodic or proggy stuff 😁
It feels weird skipping major genres along the way (groove, sludge, black, old-school death, etc), but I know I'll get sucked into those one way or another through a crossover style (melodic black, etc).
WOO TRAP THEM DARKER HANDCRAFT MENTION, that’s one of the most underrated albums ever
Slamming brutal technical death metal
or
Brutal slamming technical death metal
If you’d separate Euro power metal from US power metal, I’d bet EUPM would be A tier. EUPM is more melodic and proggy than USPM (which is closer to Thrash). Essentially EUPM is the goodness of melodeath without the harsh vocals. Good examples are Kamelot, Orden Ogan and Brothers of Metal.
Pirate Metal totally has a sound of its own without vocals/lyrics.
Pirate Metal is a valid sub genre.
35:47-35:52 has got to be the funniest thing ever.
0:12 but what about blackened banjocore
Blackened melodic brutal death funeral doom
I feel like grindcore gets such a bad reputation because of the short song gag. It's such a unique genre that imo can produce some of the best sounds in metal.
Take any album,ep,split etc. from plutocracy for example or even the more metal leaning bands like insect warfare or nasum. The music that homies like this put together is definitely more than just "lol short song"
The list was entertaining and well put together, just had to defend my boy grindcore 🙏🙏🙏
