@11:04... ummm.. you don't even have the battery door anymore. Anyways, I agree that this camera is way better than the GoPro Hero 8 at low light. For some reason you didn't mention overheating when recording in 5.3K. And nobody mentions the camera stops recording at 90 minutes to save the file. That takes about 45 seconds. So it loses about 45 seconds of action.
That 90cm minimum focus really stops me from purchasing this unit. It’s just to far. Really no point having a switchable screen when you can’t see what’s on it when the unit is so far stretched out. No close up underwater videography or cinematic flower/plant etc... if there was a lens you could attach to mitigate this then everything would be excellent. Apart from this the rest of the camera use is exceptional and that flow state is just awesome. Great video Ben your very clear and concise reviews are fantastic and I look forward to them always. Does that improve if using an external battery pack? 2) When using external battery packs, you need to press the ON/OFF every 10mins? Means, I can’t leave it alone to record a 2 hr footage? 3) Are there any recording gaps when shooting longer videos? I.e. the cam saves the video into smaller blocks of 30mins and are there any gaps between those files? Usage will mainly for my drumming footage for concerts. Considering this Vs GoPro 9

how does the stabilization of the 1" module compare with the new hero 8 Hypersmooth 2.0 BOOST beta? Most important thing for action cam is the wide FOV & stabilization. But that 1" increase in resolution is definitely sweet & looking better than previous comparison video.

Interesting review! I've been following the Insta360 stuff and it's cool to see some improvement in the detail over the HERO8. For most content viewed at 100% on a phone screen I don't know that the added detail is a huge reason to go one or the other. Having the 5.3k and some flexibility in post would be awesome but I was hoping the 1" sensor looked even better given that the GoPro doesn't have as large of a sensor (low light stabilization looks great though). For those looking for something affordable, small and durable for everyday/vlogging this looks like a great option. Would be curious to see how many people are using the 1" sensor mod for action sports.
Good thing I've been missing from your previous videos. The pace of the speech is somewhat less stressed and I like that. And as far as I understand, the GoPro HERO 8 is not much different from the GoPro HERO 7 Black except for some features. So I can compare my GPH 7 Black with the Insta360 ONE R1 which I am considering to buy.
I've heard the same thing about the Hero 7 Black and 8 Black. I own the 7 black and love it. Honestly couldn't ask for much better out of an action cam. Maybe better low light performance, but how much "action" would you be doing in lowlight? At that point, maybe a better vlog camera like a Osmo Pocket would work.
Made me feel like I made the wrong choice on GoPro Hero 8, however, turns out the Insta360 with the 1-Inch sensor is about the price of two (2) GoPro Hero 8 kits which include a spare battery, SD card, and a couple of mounts while the Insta360 one 1-Inch looks to include only 1. Quality is nice though but this is closer in price to my Fujifilm XT-30 than it is to a gopro hero 8.
Is there any regulation of audio signal from external source in the unit with USB to minijack adapter? I would like to plug professional camera or audio recorder to that and not worry about cliping or having soft signal.
Don't get to excited guys, resolution is not a good measure of quality. Many video camera drop pixels between shots to reduce the amount of information being processed, if you look at a Canon eos r, it records at 400mbs at 1080p capturing all the pixels, and the picture looks amazingly better than a number of 4k res. So be careful what specs companies quote.
Now that would make a cool comparison video. 1 inch vs the iPhone 11 and heck throw the 10 in there too. I know you had that quick comparison but a whole video would be really awesome

Just bought this as I've had totally bad reliability issues, battery issues, app issues, with Gopro over the years. Last motorsport meeting I lost in-car footage of two races because it just.... stopped. No reason just stopped. My Garmin VIRB rear camera has always performed faultlessly. Insta will wipe the floor with Gopro if it proves reliable,and the software on app and desktop is as good as it seems to be.

I took a good look at the images and have no preference for a particular brand or hype! but to be honest, I don't find the GoPro's images fresh at all and way too orange! I had seen some videos where the noise from the wind was appalling, what is your experience? and what is the build quality of this camera, can it be compared to a GoPro?
Unfortunately the audio from both built-in is not always the best, but ONE R has a nice cheap 3.5mm mic adapter, or can use wireless bluetooth buds, I haven't tried this yet though

Wish Ben knew more about cameras. The 1-inch sensor is unrelated to 5k. Bigger sensor doesn't mean higher res. You can have 8k on a tiny Samsung phone sensor.

Insta360 needs to make a 1 inch mod with depth of field an autofocus then I will buy it! That minimum focus distance requiring a selfie stick is a no go for me even though it looks great at longer shots. A double screen'd brain mod would be good too so you don't have to disassemble the whole camera and all the peripherals you got attached to it to flip the screen.

The 5K is a nice plus. And definitely looks like great improvements since your pre-production review. But a comparison between the two at 4K60 would be nice for the finicky folks who eschew the gimmicky 120/240 fps modes for slowing 60 fps to 42% (or so).

Imo what action cams need is 1" global shutter sensors. It would make footage look so much less choppy/teary and more cinematic.

Pls do a endurance test vs the gopro. Something intense to show if it can match the GoPro's ruggedness. :)

The 5K is a nice plus. And definitely looks like great improvements since your pre-production review. But a comparison between the two at 4K60 would be nice for the finicky folks who eschew the gimmicky 120/240 fps modes for slowing 60 fps to 42% (or so).

Good to know it doesn't focus at close range, that's the one thing that would have made me switch from my Gopro. Need to be able to do closer selfie type footage. A bit disappointing but thanks for the great review that included this detail.

What's the point of comparing a 1" sensor with a GoPro 12? You made your point in the first minute.
Maybe a comparison with the 1" Sony RX0ii would be more interesting.

I usually include those in my comparisons, but this one was more specific in pixel-peeping, and comparing clarity of 5.3K 1-inch vs much smaller gp sensor
