Don't know about that, because Townsend thought Brian Wilson was an amazing producer and composer. Only those two were expanding the boundaries of the pop song ("A Quick One", "Good Vibrations").
You're partially right, Carlos. It's a doo-wop song from around 1960. Jan & Dean covered it, yet The Beach Boys had a big hit with it (#1 throughout Scandanavia #2 in the US, #3 in the UK). Since their version was more popular than the original, people consider it a Beach Boys song.
Omg, a dream come true, The Who covering The Beach Boys..I think I've died and gone to heaven!!!! This is awesome, thanks for posting, I've never seen it!
Anyone who takes this serious, obviously there just fucking around we don't have to critique everything. OMG Pete didn't know the lyrics or Keith can't sing "Who Cares." It was fun to watch.
I just about fell into the aisle in the theater when I saw the film for the first time. It's a little slice of Moonie. The rest of the guys had a laugh and tolerated him.
It's awesome when you see a bunch of great musicians just having a good time, kidding around and jamming. That's the way its supposed to be. Rock on \m/
This is when Keith almost went on tour with the band of his dreams, The Beach Boys... sadly his Who schedule, health and his death put an end to that. Could you imagine going to see The beach Boys and out pops Keith? WOW!
Ahhh my favourite boys doing what they did best! Love Pete's intro air guitar and the chemistry between all of them. RIP Moonie, an utter character and the greatest drummer we've ever known; taken far too soon. Go rock out with Hendrix, Janis and Lennon for me on the great big stage in the sky. :)
I had heard that The Who did this song when they were getting ready to record Who Are You. Moon was in bad enough shape that they came to rehearsals and decided to play this song. One reason was Moon was a HUGE Beach Boys fan. The other reason was to get things going again in the studio. As you can see, Keith Moon absolutely ate this up. And even when THIS lineup of The Who was just screwing around, they still kicked ass!! Such a tragedy that Keith Moon couldn't get his alcoholism in line. Such a phenomenal drummer. RIP Keith!!
When they were making "The Kids Are Alright," they asked Jeff Stein to pick a song, any song, that he'd like to hear them play. Here's the result, although they had recorded "Barbara Ann" some years before when Keith was much healthier and better with the vocals.
First thing you realize is how great the Beach Boys really are, often considered light weight music. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is a great video because it shows you how great the Who were and how difficult the Beach Boys craft was at the same time.
Sometimes you need to appreciate a thing for what it is: they are singing and playing for their own pleasure not ours, we are lucky to see incredible artists in their own right, having fun with an unpolished performance, humanizing them and making them more accessible to us.
+Marty McDaniel The Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys did NOT write it either. It was this Italian American doo wop group from da Bronx called the Regents who wrote it performed it and had a hit record with it 3 years before the Beach Boys although the Beach Boys version was way superior the Regents version was pretty good doo wop especially with the evocative saxes on the record.
This always makes me howl with laughter , four of the all time greats just having some fun and whoing up an already fine pop song , I could never get bored watching this !
Yeah he really looks like he wants to be somewhere else! But to be charitable he may have been concentrating on the harmonies... I love that you can hear Roger laughing!
I know they went a bit 'wobbly' with their harmonies live but I don't think anybody could argue with the harmonies on the records that were done in the studio when they could perfect them.
Keith Moon ( drummer) loved the Beach Boys and they played a Beach Boys song at every concert. I will of course teach Liam Baa Baa Black Sheep. BTW The Who were recorded as the loudest concert band in the world. 130 db's I once heard
Oh my God, this is so fucking funny. Keith's face as he does that falsetto! So ridiculous. I also love when Roger waves his hands to get Keith to keep singing. Now, I have to say, Keith wasn't THAT bad of a singer. Pete always makes it like he was the worst singer ever. His voice actually sounds very nice on that part of Bell Boy with the "some nights I still sleep on the beach..."
Quadrophenia is also a great album to listen to if yur tryin to get into them, I'm a who fan from way back seen then in NYC 4 times and every time was awesome especially when I saw "Tommy" live and "Quadrophenia" live 2 of the best show's I've seen.
The Who were the beginning of an era where the band did the recordings and played live, The Beach Boys were strictly a live band, their recordings were arranged by Brian Wilson and recorded by the Wrecking Crew. The Who broke some serious ground and had fun doing it. Love this.
All of the Beach Boys played their instruments on all of their studio recordings for albums and singles through The Beach Boys Today album. On Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson played bass, organ, & piano, Carl Wilson played lead guitar & over dubbed 12 string, and Dennis Wilson played drums. Session players were also used on this album, and for all albums going forward from Pet Sounds.
for those ranking on this saying it sounds awful, this is what music sounds like live with no sound guy or mix!I am a musician, and I hate when people post videos of me/the band just jamming in the garage, because novices don't know shit about how sound works.A band can be the greatest musicians, but get stuck with a shitty soundguy or system, and even the best will sound crappy!
This just makes me SMILE!!! 3 of my fav guys. Moon is insane and Rodger... Oh my! Hot! Then there is Pete, who is actually pretty cute here And ROCKS it!
@Iantorchwood94 Yes I know. My comment was in reference specifically to Pete Townsend. Pete had said in the past how much he disliked the Beach Boys music and you can see his boredom as he plays 'Barabara Ann' here. I would point you to the clip if it were on TH-cam but it's not posted: in a Brian Wilson DVD made in 2000 or so, Brian and Pete both played Neil Young's charity concert. In an interview for the DVD, Pete talks about how much he loves Brian and his music.
I've always loved how Pete can write the most complex concept albums yet can't remember the lyrics to barbara ann
He hated the beach boys😂
+Roy Cropper how is that possible lol
Don't know about that, because Townsend thought Brian Wilson was an amazing producer and composer. Only those two were expanding the boundaries of the pop song ("A Quick One", "Good Vibrations").
but barbara ann is not beach boys song
You're partially right, Carlos. It's a doo-wop song from around 1960. Jan & Dean covered it, yet The Beach Boys had a big hit with it (#1 throughout Scandanavia #2 in the US, #3 in the UK). Since their version was more popular than the original, people consider it a Beach Boys song.
Omg, a dream come true, The Who covering The Beach Boys..I think I've died and gone to heaven!!!! This is awesome, thanks for posting, I've never seen it!
All the little imperfections just make this clip even better and my god the guitar solos are totes rocking...
Anyone who takes this serious, obviously there just fucking around we don't have to critique everything. OMG Pete didn't know the lyrics or Keith can't sing "Who Cares." It was fun to watch.
its just classic guys having fun with rock n roll... once you wash away all the genbre and era bs its all supposed be FUN and ROCK N ROLL right?
I just about fell into the aisle in the theater when I saw the film for the first time. It's a little slice of Moonie. The rest of the guys had a laugh and tolerated him.
Your comment nailed it, Lisa. I love everything about this.
Moon's vioce reminds me of the gingerbread man in Shrek. It's adorable.
+Monica Welch : Daltrey said
when Keith showed up for an 'audition', he was "this little ginger man".
Jim Werkheiser Pete also said that in The Kids Are Alright documentary.
Check out Pete doing Chuck Berry's "Hop" at 2:36.
R.I.P. Chuck Berry, who passed away yesterday at age 90.
Pete & Keith had such a magical connection.....it's so beautiful to watch.
WOW!
Just too good to be true I guess, my favorite band and one of my favorite musicians of all time together :'(
Ahhh my favourite boys doing what they did best!
Love Pete's intro air guitar and the chemistry between all of them.
RIP Moonie, an utter character and the greatest drummer we've ever known; taken far too soon. Go rock out with Hendrix, Janis and Lennon for me on the great big stage in the sky. :)
Keith Moon Maddest Drummer Ever!!!!!!!! Never Forget Yer!!!!
djharg /Haggis ... John Bonham. 💯
Bonham and Moon are two GENIUSES. But Keith got the falsetto ;)
Ja, usually John Entwistle did the falsetto.
Moon the Loon, this is just f'ing amazing. I am so glad I found this. Love the jam at 2:36
I had heard that The Who did this song when they were getting ready to record Who Are You. RIP Keith!!
+Bret Bailey : It seems Keith was doing the right thing at the end.
When they were making "The Kids Are Alright," they asked Jeff Stein to pick a song, any song, that he'd like to hear them play. Here's the result, although they had recorded "Barbara Ann" some years before when Keith was much healthier and better with the vocals.
It seems Mr. Townshend was in worse shape here.
how can you not love them?!?!?
ohh my god.
So bad, so good, very funny, thank you for the post 8+ years later. Kieth Moon is, and always will be brilliant.
I died when Keith went "Barbara Aaaann" for the first time and Roger had that look on his face and then they all laughed. Sweet.
That is pure GOLD. I had no idea this clip existed. The Who are so far out of their comfort zone singing this.
First thing you realize is how great the Beach Boys really are, often considered light weight music. Nothing could be further from the truth.
This is a great video because it shows you how great the Who were and how difficult the Beach Boys craft was at the same time.
Keith Moon on lead vocals!! I've seen it it all now!! Best drummer the world has ever seen. God bless you Keith R.I.P
Good rendition of The Beach Boy's
cover of The Regents....
These guys are havin' fun jammin' :)
Pura improvvisazione! ...Geniali!
i was not expecting keith to be as good as he was
Sometimes you need to appreciate a thing for what it is: they are singing and playing for their own pleasure not ours, we are lucky to see incredible artists in their own right, having fun with an unpolished performance, humanizing them and making them more accessible to us.
I think it sounds good as is. Spontaneous and alive. That's rock n roll.
Ahhhaaahaa, fantastic!!!!
Why can I not stop listening to this...
I can watch this over and over.... rip Keith what a legend
i love this the boys are having a laugh
What a gem! Just fuckin around and their still great!
The best...Ahaa Towsend on Guitar classic as per usual Keith just to good...
Just AWSOME!
Fantastic.....Amazing.....THE WHO, one of my favourite band, the greatest live band ever!
Very very funny, I love The Who and The Beach Boys
the original it isn't of beach boys, is of The Rigents
the regents*
for a group of guys who reportedly fought so much, they sure were fun to watch.
I can now die in comfort. I have officially seen everything.
keith u r a legend
Pete doesn't even know the words! HAHAHA!!!
Why should he?
Pete doesn't have to remember the lyrics. He's written some of the best songs ever.
+greypeppermoose But he didn't write Barbara Ann!
+Marty McDaniel I know.
Excellent, they were having fun.
THE Best Band of THE WORLD.... THE WHO.. FROM MÉXICO CITY 🇲🇽✌️🇲🇽✌️🇲🇽
i think this is my favorite youtube video ever.
This encapsulates why I love the who. I like and respect Led Zepplin what they did is amazing. But The Who just had that magic. The human touch.
This always makes me howl with laughter , four of the all time greats just having some fun and whoing up an already fine pop song , I could never get bored watching this !
Why do I love this video so much? Lol
Just another legendary band recognizing the greatness of the Beach Boys.
Pete looks less than thrilled. Don't know about John and Rog, either.
MrGb1965 Must've been a a Blue Monday "idea" of a boozed Keith Moon....
Yeah he really looks like he wants to be somewhere else! But to be charitable he may have been concentrating on the harmonies... I love that you can hear Roger laughing!
Harmony isnt a strength of the Who, great as they may be.
I know they went a bit 'wobbly' with their harmonies live but I don't think anybody could argue with the harmonies on the records that were done in the studio when they could perfect them.
love this!!!haven't seen this footage in years, thanks!!
Génial
pure rock `n´ roll Pete´s guitar...............
They were just having fun. I enjoyed it myself.
My God-Pete's behind is soooooooooBeautiful
One of the best bands ever!!!!
Great garage sound!
Behold; 4 of the greatest musicians who ever lived
Keith Moon ( drummer) loved the Beach Boys and they played a Beach Boys song at every concert. I will of course teach Liam Baa Baa Black Sheep. BTW The Who were recorded as the loudest concert band in the world. 130 db's I once heard
2:36 to 2:43 look at him go!
In the good shots of John Entwistle's playing, I was like "WOW, he even plays a simple 4-square real cool like!"
"Does it come in twice?"
Always cracks me up...
They have the best bass player ever to have played the instrument..
+TheNightmare75II : My impression is Roger lifted his hand to indicate an octave change or two.
Jim Werkheiser Yeah, after watching it again, I think you're correct. He waves his hand upward, like "bring it up." Either way, it's a great video.
I've heard Keith's solo album in it's entirety. That being said, I was quite surprised to hear how well Keith did on this cover.
Quadrophenia is also a great album to listen to if yur tryin to get into them, I'm a who fan from way back seen then in NYC 4 times and every time was awesome especially when I saw "Tommy" live and "Quadrophenia" live 2 of the best show's I've seen.
good footage i've never seen before. thank you
Keith was a madman.
The incredible Keith Moon❤️❤️❤️
Wow! This...is...FIRCKIN AWESOME!!! Thank you!
Great find, cheers for posting.
I can't believe so many thumbs down... This film is really great piece of rock'n'roll history.
The Who were the beginning of an era where the band did the recordings and played live, The Beach Boys were strictly a live band, their recordings were arranged by Brian Wilson and recorded by the Wrecking Crew. The Who broke some serious ground and had fun doing it. Love this.

On Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson played bass, organ, & piano, Carl Wilson played lead guitar & over dubbed 12 string, and Dennis Wilson played drums. Session players were also used on this album, and for all albums going forward from Pet Sounds.
This is called "let's indulge Keith for a few minutes."
Omg this is an awesome rendition the who pay homage to the Beachboys great video
that nuances of the voice of moon passes of a song as bell boy and then a song with this little voice of babara ann is just amazing
this is awesome! it reminds me of working at the Melodrama and they were rehearsing. thank-you for this video :)
a pure gem, thanks
My favourite Rockumentary of all time!
one of the best movies ever. at that time? lost count how many times we went and laughed!
Priceless....thank u '92.
I really wish the camera was on John at the first solo thing, you can hear his mad playing.
the best of them
We need more Entwistle in this video
Now 2024...love it ...
Absolutely cool. Finally realized the Who influence on Cheap Trick watching this. And the Beach Boys just smoked.
This must have been a heavenly moment for Moonie. He loved Beach Boys.
It’s this kind of fun spontaneous fun behavior that got The Who so far, never a bad Who gig I’ve ever seen!
WOW, proof the Who are the greatest rock band of all time!
Even just larking around with a song they barely knew, that was *brilliant*. Anyone criticising it then *try* it yourself
Entwistle played the bass as a lead guitar; he was amazing.
That's too funny!! The Who covering the Beach Boys! Liked it!
Ahem... You propably mean The Regents?
Mikael Turunen You probably meant "probably".
Classic Rock Kid
lol....
"It's beyond the beyond!"
He got me laughing for more than an hour, Pete you just made my day xD
Love this cover of the song
for those ranking on this saying it sounds awful, this is what music sounds like live with no sound guy or mix!I am a musician, and I hate when people post videos of me/the band just jamming in the garage, because novices don't know shit about how sound works.A band can be the greatest musicians, but get stuck with a shitty soundguy or system, and even the best will sound crappy!
i fucking love Keith Moon! xD
I didn't know Moonie could sing!!
This just makes me SMILE!!! 3 of my fav guys. Moon is insane and Rodger... Oh my! Hot! Then there is Pete, who is actually pretty cute here And ROCKS it!
The way Pete just laconically walks over to the boost pedal and stomps it OFF at 1:56 is just priceless to me. "ok nuff that s***"
wow, they all had a mic and could sing
1:47 the ultimate rhythm section
Great song!
Cómo se divierten al ensayar!!! Excelente Banda.
dat drum solo.
The Who is the greatest band to ever exist they did it because they loved it not to get rich and famous but how could they not
THEY ARE GODS!!!
In an interview for the DVD, Pete talks about how much he loves Brian and his music.
almost a "Spinal Tap" kinda feel to it
I like seeing how Pete and Keith interact at the guitar solos...proper rockers...
